Not only is there a main house complete with artifacts and informational posters and pamphlets, but there are also incredibly knowledgeable docents who can walk you through the areas. Julie gave us an well educational interactive tour through not only the front house, but also two other historical cabins and the workplace of a lumberjack. The authenticity of the artifacts, furnishings, and overall style of the lodgings (some pieces are originals, while some are replicas or refurbished) is incredible and really transports you back in time. This is a wonderful place to bring kids, particularly if they're in a school system in the area that will be having them participate in the Texas historical project. We have set up hammocks in the area to further connect with nature. Recently, I embarked on a hike, enjoying a leisurely walk while observing wildlife, including a bunny. Following the hike, I relaxed and appreciated the water. During one visit, I encountered a diver who collected various items. Also have a place to rinse off and change. Camping sites and boating are available to rent. The park's safety is assured through routine checks by the rangers, which I find reassuring. Although alligators were spotted, they maintained a distance.

Since it was a holiday, it was booked way in advance and I would highly recommend everyone to do that. It's a bit of a drive from Houston, but once inside, I felt it was worth it. I had no idea it was even out here. There are fees to enter as well as fees for areas you want to rent for yourself. Huntsville State Park is located in the Sam Houston National Forest and is filled with beautiful trees, hiking trails and lakes. On the lake, you can fish, canoe and even swim. There is a designated spot for swimming which we saw but did not partake in. There is no lifeguard, so swim at your own risk and beware of the alligators. There are plenty of trails that can keep you busy for days. If you're into camping, there have plenty of campsites, including some screened shelter. The screened shelter plot we rented was spacious and had amenities like picnic tables, grill, water hookup, amp hookup, and restrooms and shower facilities nearby. It was a great setup for our large group. We had plenty of space to play, set up some little pools for the kiddos and eat without anybody being right on top of us. After coming here, I realized I need to take advantage of all the state parks in our amazing state and escape the hustle and bustle of the city every once in awhile. I would visit this place again for sure.

Good trails takes a couple of trips around to squeeze out a mile. Watch out for the straw covered…read morehazards because they can sneak up on you. One thing if you're not familiar with the area, don't go off the address on Yelp or the internet it takes you to a subdivision. Go to google maps and look for it there then touch it on the screen, that's how I finally got there. There's no signage to let you know your there.

5-Star!!! Looking at Membership!!…read more We are absolutely blown away by our experience at 7 Acre Wood! As small business owners, we know what it's like to get unfair reviews--and honestly, we're not sure what people could possibly complain about here. Everything was so well-maintained, from the grounds to the animal enclosures, and the entire place had a warm, welcoming feel. Every animal was friendly, approachable, and clearly used to kind human interaction. Our kids (6-year-old boy and 4-year-old girl) were able to pet and spend quality time with all of them--which is something you don't get at most places. The putt-putt course was a fun bonus, and the playground looked brand new--better than what you'd see at most parks! We stayed for 5 full hours, and not once did the kids get bored. Even in 95-degree heat, there was plenty of shade and a nice breeze, making it very tolerable. The staff was amazing, and a young man named Cameron stood out--super friendly and helpful when we asked about the male tortoises (which were incredible to see up close). We also noticed multiple people working to keep everything clean and cared for the entire time we were there. On top of all that, the food prices were shockingly affordable, which made it even more enjoyable. We left grateful, refreshed, and already planning our next visit. This place is a hidden gem and a great example of how a small attraction can be run with excellence and heart.
