I then gave them another pair of shoes for heel replacement because I was happy with my first pair. If you need shoes, boots, or buffing out of your shoes then I highly recommend this shop. Btw, you do need to pay them for services beforehand. I wear my shoes until the heels wear out and then have them replaced because comfort trumps fashion.

The woman was impossible to ask anything of, and not because of any lanhuage barriers. I didn't have anywhere to else to get the shoes repaired, so I just dealt with it. I paid in advance for the shoe work. When I went to pick up the shoes on the day she's specified and insisted upon, she claimed she couldn't find them at first and blamed me. These shoes were originally purchased for about $300 and are good shoes. Mom put them on for the first time this morning since the work was done and the retreading broke away. Neither of us really wants to even go back to take issue with the woman because she's so hostile. So we're going to accept the loss and never go there again.

This will likely get at least one of the people working there to stop what they're doing for a moment and go into an explanation of why the two are not the same thing. Thankfully I was not the person on the receiving end of the explanation and it's not like the person on the receiving end was scolded, but it was interesting two days in a row watching someone say the C-word inside the shop and the accompanying reaction it garnered. The day of our most recent visit there were three people working in the shop which may not sound like it would be an issue but everything inside is very small. You can fit maybe eight or nine people tightly before things start to get claustrophobic. Each of the three was working on a different part of an order/project that day for a CW employee. To clarify, a shoemaker of course is the one actually making the shoes whereas the cobbler is the one repairing the shoes. In this shop did they do cobbling in the 18th century? Yes just like they fix shoes now for either themselves or for other CW in costume employees but it's not their primary duty. (Note that the current shoemaker building is not original) The way they are making shoes in this shop right now is very similar to how the process unfolded 200+ years ago. You come into the shop and take note of the display models hanging on the walls and see if there is something to your liking. If there is and if they have your size then you walk out the door with your new shoes right there. If you have an odd size or if you're looking for something a bit more specialized, you place a custom order and the shoes are done in about a day. In 18th century Williamsburg the shoemaking trade was very cuthroat. You had several shops in town along with larger operations where people could buy from cities like Richmond and of course people could always import things from London. Be good, be fast or be done. This wasn't a specialty item like a carriage where only the wealthy could afford it. The average person would be buying four pairs of shoes per year so there was a good amount of business to go around. Ended up finding a great pair of riding boots that were practical for a rider (vs a passenger) and cute to boot! They didn't have my size but were happy to order them for me. Got a call about two weeks later and went to pick them up. They didn't charge me when they ordered them because they wanted to make sure they'd work for me before they took my $. I like that policy! Funny how a good pair of boots makes the riding experience. Not my first time on a bike but first time owning one and TBH, I was intimidated (hadn't ridden in a very long time and even then I hadn't ridden much, mostly been a passenger). But wearing those boots with a good sole that gripped made a huge difference. Was it all in my head? Probably not, but I'll take all the help I can get. They have an embroidery machine on site and we're making patches when I went to pick up the boots. Very cool store. Helpful employees. Great selection of riding gear for a relatively small store. Thrilled it's local and so convenient. (Now for the DMV to get me my bloody title and plates so I can get to check out my new ride for real. Because of pandemic been waiting 4 weeks and it could be longer. But that doesn't make any sense because DMV counter services are limited to appointments. Has DMV reduced staff by 75-80% to have increased turnaround time from one week to four or five? See what I mean?)
