The ice cream was really good. Got cookie dough and chocolate oreo. Honestly thought they were both delicious. But I'm still trying to figure out why two smalls for $3.65 came to $8.47. I asked the cashier and she said there was a 33% tax? Can someone explain this to me? Also, the plastic spoons were SO cheap that they bent when trying to scoop hard ice cream. The ice cream here tastes homemade, which it is. The flavors are more subtle than most ice creams. We got two smalls, one with half mint chocolate chip and cake batter and the other with half coffee and cookie dough. The coffee and mint were the better flavors of the four. They give out samples so it may be beneficial to try a few to see which flavor you like best since they're somewhat hit or miss. It is no longer cash only. I'd give it 3.5 Stars. read more

The drive through line was WAYYYY too long though. Very cute idea, but the people behind the counter were entirely too slow for it to be working out the way it should. Plus he ordered one large milkshake and one medium and they both came in the same size cup. When he questioned them they said they put less in one. They should post prices. The ice cream is okay, but to me it was pretty bland. I got the peanut butter ice cream in a small cup. The ice cream was nice and creamy. Well, it is ice cream! So, it's gotta be creamy. While the ice cream was good, it didn't have a strong taste of peanut butter! Sure, I tasted it, but it didn't have a good kick for me to say. Wow, that was some good peanut butter, It was more like pinches of peanut butter. I liked it to be a bit more chunky. Staff was bland. They just asked me what type of ice cream I wanted, I paid, and I left. They frowned at me throughout the entire time they were serving me. I might come back to try a different flavor though! I would not recommend just yet! I don't particuly like the location either! I feel in South River, since it's in a pretty poor area, you could get robbed! Yummy ice cream at good prices! I also love the atmosphere. It screams of the ice cream places I ate at growing up as a kid with a 70s/80s vibe to it, which was part of its charm for me! This review only gets 4 stars because I have yet to try their hard ice cream. Also this will be short and sweet (no pun intended). I have never had better soft serve anywhere in my life. I believe it is made in house. Do not let the surrounding area deter you from going. It was all but wiped out following Hurricane Sandy. The prices are awesome and the service is good as well. How could I be the first one to review this place? Causeway Ice Cream is visible as you drive the Sayreville/South River bridge and look over the guard rail. This ice cream shop has been here since before I was born in 1972. May be the same family that owns it. They have all the typical ice cream parlor favorites. As a kid my mom bought me banana split which once I got barely half-way through, would go in our freezer never to be eaten again. Just too much goodness for a 11 year old I guess. As a teenager and now adult, my 'usual' is a vanilla cone (soft ice cream) with rainbow sprinkles. Oh the memories. Great place, wierd location that somehow makes the experience all the better. The prices are excellent, last summer one of the employees told me that they haven't raised their prices in 6(?) years. Also they only accept cash. Cute little place hiding in the less traveled part of town. They have a drive through. The soft serve is great. I can't comment on the hard ice cream, as I haven't tried it. read more

Causeway ice cream is fantastic. They have a huge selection of hard ice cream that is all homemade. I'm not a big fan of ice-cream cones, but their homemade waffle cones are to die for. They always serve them fresh and it shows. On top of the delicious treats, the owner is one of the nicest people I have ever met. He's always there and always wanting to talk to customers and get feedback on how he can improve things. He recognizes his regulars and treats them well. Not sure how this place gets four stars. The other reviewers must have never had good quality homemade ice cream. Ordered a small cup with butter pecan and peanut butter and a sundae with choc choc chip. Can't go wrong with that right? WRONG! The small definitely was just that. Smallest scoops I've ever seen! But thats not the main reason it gets one star. A good place can pull off small servings if they have good ice cream, such as the bent spoon in Princeton. They get one star because of the chunks of ice throughout both flavors and the tasteless poor quality of what was served to me. I was shocked at how bad it was, especially after reading previous reviews. The sundae was ok because it was covered in hot fudge and whipped cream which masked the ice cream horror. I brought my small cup back to the counter and asked for plain chocolate instead, hoping the popularity of the flavor might ensure it would be fresh and not freezer burned. Nope! Chunks of ice in that too. When I walked away I swear I heard the girl inside exclaim that the butter pecan was sugar free and that's why there's ice in it but I could be wrong. Wouldn't be surprised though sure tastes like it! It would be nice if they let their customers know what they were being served! Bottom line... the ice cream was absolutely terrible! Stay far away. If you want amazing homemade I've cream go to one of the Hoffman's locations down the shore. It's worth the drive! read more
