I have visited another Cattleman's in Metro Detroit and was impressed. What happened when I visited this location was amazing. I was overwhelmed! This store is a small grocery with a large meat room. If you are looking for meat, they probably have it. Rows and rows of every kind of meat normally offered in the U.S. Need 20 lbs of hamburger? It's already on the shelf. Soup bones, pork shoulder, steaks, roasts - they have it all. Their selection is outstanding! The grocery part of the store is well stocked for it's size. The fruits and vegetables were always fresh during my visits. Their prices seemed to be in line with area stores. I don't price comparison shop much, so take that for what it's worth. We have been going here to buy meat. Their prices are pretty fair compared to regular grocery stores. Their services are decent. Meat quality has been good. They also have a deli counter,as well. You can also get some vegetables and some bbq supplies from sauces to wood. Be sure to wear an extra layer since meat room is very chilly. read more

I went here today to check out the place due to a friend's recommendation and commercials. There is plenty of parking. As I walked in I was visually hit with a variety of items. I grabbed a few bbq sauces and rubd to prepare for spring. I thought.....I don't plan on buying much. Then the meat section approached. There were various fresh mests everywhere. It was chilly also as it is a big freezer. You could also see the butchers in there long coats cutting up meats. Welll....I thought I came into look but the steaks, sausages, fish and shrimp looked so good. They were also a great price. Hard to pass up. The staff was also friendly and helpful. I stopped in to pick up a few items after church service. I saw the cherries were on sale for $3.99 per pound. The bag says "Sweet Red Cherries"........which they were not!!!!! I called the store and spoke with the clerk, I told her "these cherries are terrible". I asked her if I should return them..........she said "no, we don't want the cherries back". I have been a shopper here for a while and I think I have hit my limit. Before I would have given this place a 3 or 4 star review but the past couple months I have been extremely disappointed. The prices are fair but the cuts of meat are not that great... or at least they would be if they where not rancid. Recently I bought 2 cuts of ribs, a beef tenderloin, a rack of lamb, and some skirt steak to make jerky with and all but the lamb was rancid. I pulled the meat out the following day to prep for a day of grilling and smoking with friends. The day was ruined they refunded my money with out to much of a problem but still I am not happy about the experience. Before any one asks yes the dates where still good on the meat. Which honestly means nothing to me as they could have repackaged old meat with a new label which honestly would not surprise me that or some one left it sitting out and still put it out to be sold either way avoid this place there are better alternatives around that will sell you quality cuts of meat. read more

Yea, I was under the assumption that I've already done a review on this institution. But I guess I was hella wrong. So here goes. You can probably avail meats from your local grocery section like in Wallymart or Meighers. If you're a proper carnivore or a real meat guy, you're gonna wanna look for certain cuts your local grocer doesn't carry. I cook a lot, and whenever there's a need for meat, I prefer to go here. Any types of cuts from, short ribs to St Luis style. Heck, they even have chicken flat piece wings with the winglets. They don't stop at meats either. They have a pretty good selection of fish as well. All prepared, filleted, some even marinated and ready for the grill. I do get my andouille and red hot sausages here as well. In short, this is definitely a meat lovers paradise. They do have game meats as well, you have to ask for them because they're in a different section and primarily seasonal. I also love that they carry the nasty bits as well. Anyways, I always love coming here to do my meat shopping. Prices are great, the staff is really nice and knowledgeable. I found my meat place! I didn't like the limits of my choices in grocers around my area. I was stuck between a Meijer, a Walmart, a Kroger, and another Meijer. Which mean, pricey meats with all the fillers. Sure some of those places are open 24/7 but, you really don't get what you pay for. I mean, sure, the chicken thighs are pretty big and there's 12 in a pack but depending on the expiration date, 6-9 dollars and meat that has fillers in it to make it bigger than it should be or chicken from factory farms is just, there's something else to be desired from it. Then I drove by this place. Several times in fact. I knew I needed to go in and check it out because I consume a lot of meat. I'm a carnivore of the omnivorious kind! So one autumn Saturday night, I walk in and make a b-line straight to the meat fridge. Looked at the prices and found the meat place I knew I needed to shop at! Prime cuts at very inexpensive prices. A pack of 2 sirloin steaks roughly 1.5 inches thick bone-in, $9 and some change. The local Meijer would sell that for at least $14+. Remember that package of chicken thighs at Meijer? The one where even if you leave the skin and bones in it, costs you anywhere from 6-8 dollars for a pack of 9-10. The same type of thighs for a pack of 7 bone-in and skin on costs you $4 and change. Economical!? YES! Needless to say... I found my meat place and will be going there more than the other places!!! read more

I heard this was a good place to get some meat, but I had no idea what to expect. But once I turned the corner in the back of the store and realized that my carnivorous dreams lay behind sliding doors in a massive walk-in cooler, I knew I was home. Paralysis may temporarily set in for the uninitiated and hours can be lost in day dreams that may require a trip to the confessional. The walls are lined with shelves of primal cuts of beef and pork. Throughout the rest of the room you can find other cuts and prepared items. It is truly a marvelous mecca for Michigan meat mavens and methodical masticators (sorry, couldn't stop the alliteration). I approach Cattleman's from a slightly different perspective than many that may frequent them. When I'm visiting their establishment, I am looking for a whole hunk of something. Usually it is brisket that I will allow to wet age and then trim myself for a good 12-18 hour smoke. Recently, it was a 20 pound rib roast that I dutifully trimmed and artfully prepared for a bunch of guys closing up a cabin in Northern Michigan. Nothing says "good work" better than a hunk-o-beef. I'm sure that not everyone is willing to trim their own, but I prefer to save a little money and know that the meat is treated the way that I prefer. But for those that want someone else to take care of that, they have staff on hand to trim and slice any primal in the way that you want it. In the end, I simply hope that this place continues to get enough traffic to stay alive. They are set a little too far back in a strip mall that seems otherwise vacant. read more

Ripped me off.First time buying from them.Their website at the time stated that they had curbside pickup, plastered all over their website. So I called to place an order for curbside and the guy wouldn't do it. I asked again and he said no curbside pickup even though it's printed all over their website. Third time I asked he finally said ok.Very odd behavior. Did not see the ripoff til I got home.I ordered 2lbs of 90/10 and what they gave me was 2.51 lbs of 85/15. Ordered 2lbs of beef roast and they gave me 2.5lbs. Ordered 1lb of flank, gave me 1.8lbs. Ordered 1lb of chuck steak and they gave me 1.58lbs. All of these unauthorized overages cost me nearly $20. Who wants Filet Mignon for under 12 bucks a pound? The first 2 filets were 10.99 a pound ( 2 filets). The second time was 12.99 a pound (2 filets). With the veggies we didn't finish the filets. Sear it with salt and pepper and veg. oil 2 minutes on both sides and one minute around the side on a iron skillet and throw it in the oven at 400 degrees for about 4 to 5 minutes. Use a meat thermometer for 125 degrees and it's like your $30 per person meal at the restaurant. Save yourself some bucks and have a relaxing cheap home meal, it's that easy! I've been going to the planet fitness next door for about 6 years. 90% of the time I get out of the gym walk next door to cattlemans and pick up a fresh veggie and usually chicken to grill for dinner....rain, snow, or shine. Usually 4-5 days a week. Today the cashier loudly scolded me in a line full of other customers for bringing my gym bag in with me. Their were no signs asking not to bring them in. I assume they dont want gym bags because of theft but I just thought it was a little unprofessional that she would be angry and "yell" about it without having posted signs, the frequency I'm in there with my gym bag, and the amount of years I've been doing it. As for products here...produce prices are a little higher but their are tons of choices of fresh meat and they'll cut it anyway you ask free of charge. It WAS convienant after the gym. read more

I love Cattleman's and you will too. This is another one of my go to meat stops. For those of you keeping track that's Costco for prime brisket, Fairway Packing for dry aged beef and their burger blend and Cattleman's for just about everything else. Right off the bat something not many people mention in the other reviews, it's cold in here - even in the summer. And there is a lot of inventory to go through so do yourself a favor and bring a sweatshirt. You are essentially shopping in a meat locker. My go-to at Cattleman's have to be the whole loins for steaks. These guys consistently have whole short loins, ribeye's, strips and tenderloins for $4.99-$7.99/pound. Those prices are stupid cheap. For example right now my local supermarket has NY Strip for $9.99 a pound, Cattleman's has a whole strip loin for $4.99 a pound. You don't have to be a genius to figure out those savings. I know buying a whole side of a cow can be intimidating by don't fret, their homeboys will slice that bad boy to your specs. Want them an inch thick, they got you. Want them an inch and three quarters, no problem. Another thing I really like about this place other then the prices is some of the oddball stuff they have you can't get at the grocery store. You want some smoked turkey necks, they got you. You need a whole country ham, they've got that too. Apparently they also have a nice produce section and a deli counter as well but I never noticed. lol I realize this might be out of the way for a lot of folks but the trip down really is worth it. And they have recently re-did their website so now it's super easy to just hop in there every Tuesday morning and see what the specials for the week are so if they don't have what you are looking for that week you don't waste a trip. read more

I patronize this place at least twice per week until today. I purchased a watermelon and mistakingly left it in the cart. When I realized it, the store was closed. So I came in today and purchased $50 worth of food. I let the cashier know about my watermelon and she directed me to the chubby cashier manager with terribly oily hair. She addressed me as if I was lying stating she was there all day and no one turned in a watermelon. I then ask to speak with another manager and he explained there was nothing he could do. I think If I were a different race they would've handled the situation much differently especially since I presented my $100 receipt. I will no longer be buying from this place again. I try to support small business but situations like this make it very difficult. It was never about the $3 watermelon because clearly I could afford another, but it was more about the way in which I was treated. read more

I've been going to Cattleman's for years. I became a fan when they had a location in Farmington which then closed so I went to the Oak Park location. That too has closed so now I have to drive to Taylor from Farmington but it's well worth the trip a few times a year to stock up. The front of the store is a little market with produce and some staple items which I pay no attention to. My goal is to head directly into the giant walk in refrigerator. I warn you....come prepared...dress for the tundra...even in the summer time...gloves are 100% necessary! Here you will find huge pieces of every kind of meat imaginable at fantastic prices. Last weekend we got NY Stripes for $2.99/lb and you can have it sliced into steaks any thickness you'd like. We got about 12 steaks, one inch thick, for $30. (Costco sells 4 inch thick steaks for about $25). And 8 1.5 inch thick fillets for $20. Once you select your meat of choice, you head to the back of the meat department and wait in line to have your meat sliced. First they put it through the tenderizer machine and I suggest asking them to put it through twice for optimal tenderness. They're happy to do this for you. Then they'll slice it and package it for you. The friendly butchers will even give you cooking tips. Don't forget to stock up on freezer bags when you go because you'll need them! And bring a cooler if you're traveling a ways to get there and it's summer time. And please....don't forget your gloves! read more

What can I say? I'm not a vegan, vegetarian, or a pescatarian. I loves me some good red meat and this is my go to place to get it. I've been a fan since they were located in Eastern Market. So I guess you would call me a Cattleman's Girl (yuk, yuk). Not only do I get good quality meat, but it makes economical sense too. For what I get price-wise compared to other stores I more than double and sometimes triple the amount I put in my freezer. And for three meat eating adults on a budget that's a good thing. The counter guys who cut your meat anyway you want it are friendly and accommodating as are the helpful staff stocking the shelves. If you're a virgin like I was they will help you select a real nice piece within your price range. Like reviewer Wendy A. (a girl after my own cheap...I mean fiscally responsible heart) produce is so so but they do occasionally run good deals on certain items. Prices for their non perishables are insane! Best to go to the dollar store or your local market (don't forget your coupons). The only thing i haven't tried there yet is the meat bundles. Purchased a big pack of pork on 10/18. The "sell by" date on the package was 10/22. I immediately put it on the fridge. Went to open the package today (10/21) and the meat was BAD. Rancid bad. Called them to discuss and the lady was rude. I tried to explain to her that the package had a sell by date of 10/22 and she cut me off stating you can only leave meat in the fridge for two days or its bad. I wouldn't be upset if she would have been nicer when she said it but she wasn't. Not happy. I've never experienced customer service so bad. read more

Great prices on meat, especially steaks. This is the place to go for NY Strip and filet in the area, especially if you need a whole slab cut for grilling! I just went a few weeks ago and got a boneless NY Strip slab, cut into steaks for $4.99/lb. A month before, I got filets at $3.99/lb. The butchers are wonderful and very helpful. They have a Walk in cooler that the customers walk into when they select their meats. I think guys just hang out in there in the Summer to try and catch women who forget to put a bra on J/K. If you want some fresh meat at a decent price you need to check this place out. It also has some grocery items but not a huge grocery section but it you want to just grab some chips or maybe some coleslaw to go with the 20 pound corned beef you are buying for Saint Patty's day they have that as the store is half market and half meat! We have been going here for years, and they never disapoint. However, recently i was turned on to their deli, why you ask? Well, you can get a deli sandwich made to order, for less then $5. The best part is no type of meat or cheese is off limits, today i had Amish roast beef, Hot Capicola, smoked Gouda, and they load it up with Lettuce,tomato, and deli sliced onions on a hard roll. The only downfall, and the only reason i did not rate at 5 stars, is the dressings are cheap condiment packs. read more
