Thankfully we only stayed one night…read more Let's talk about the good first. Checking in, the staff was very friendly and welcoming. All of the facilities were very clean including the beautiful pool. Unfortunately there are two main reasons we would not stay again. The first is that the septic inlet was at the very end of the spot. (Site 3 specifically but also other sites nearby). We needed to park at the end of the "driveway" which was less than ideal with the unlevel gravel surface. Thankfully we had long hoses but otherwise we would've been *sol*. The second is the train. Wow did it sound like it was right outside of the campground. Between 10 pm and 6 am we were woken up at least 2, probably 3, times by the train. Although I love KOAs, I would not return.

It's difficult to review based on a stay during a tropical storm, however, this KOA does have some…read morepros and cons. The drive through campsites are pretty decent, clean and well maintained. The sewer connection is a bit on the high side, so flushing the black and grey tanks takes a bit of effort. I do like the fact that the connection is a bit high to keep some water in the connection preventing pests and gasses from coming back through the line and into the RV. The common areas appear to also be clean and well maintained. The pool was not open - but it's not like one needs to go swimming during a downpour. Kids play areas looked good, and the campground has a nice half court basketball set up near the bath house. Friendly and accommodating staff. With all that said, there were some not so great things about the place. The nearby train tracks running trains blowing their horns all night - not a good way to get a good night's sleep. The wood bundles are very light compared other KOA's and local stores. If it rains, the wood that's for sale gets wet and does not burn well. The Bathrooms are hit and miss - sometimes clean, most of the time not so much. Okay, I get it, the public uses them and people can be slobs and gross. The store does not seem to stock much in the way of perishable foods like meats/eggs/bacon. I get they would charge more than a local store but it would make sense to have it available for the convenience.

I was told that this campground is the "crown jewel" of the thousand trails family but when I got here the park is not maintained nicely, they play favorites on who they assign sites to...the non premium sites, without sewer, are a free for all with no methodology on how they're assigned. If you want to call ahead to see what site you'll have, the thousand trails 1800 number has no answer and there is no direct phone number listed for this campground. Luckily, my membership was a free gift when I bought my new RV because if I had to pay for this place, I would've demanded my money back and driven 45 min back to 95 to stay at a pass through stop and been back on my way. This will be the last Thousand Trails I stay at, never making this mistake again!

I've tubed on many rivers but never one that barely flows. It seems we missed the memo about grabbing an oar. There were four in my group and we had two cooler tubes. We were all linked together. There were many times where we literally weren't moving. Each one of us had to take turns walking our group down the river and pulling the rest of us just to make progress. We were told there were sandbars located throughout our trip for us to enjoy the picnic I provided. The only thing we found eventually was a big rock that we got up on to eat. So I would rate Tar River Life highly but the overall experience would get maybe a two from me.
