I'm way overdue on this review. It's been almost a year since we first found Catrins, and at this point they've definitely earned it. My boys had been going to the same person for haircuts since their very first cuts, so when she moved away I wasn't just looking for someone who could cut hair. I wanted a shop that understood their mixed curly hair, but I also wanted the experience to still be something they enjoyed. Haircuts have always been one of those little things the boys and I do together, and I didn't want it to suddenly feel like a chore. Because our schedule is usually packed, the first time we went to Catrins we took a chance and booked three different barbers at the same time. Somehow we went 3-for-3. Lance, Rebekah and Cass have all been awesome. They take the time to listen to what we want, they're great with my boys, and they've created a shop where everyone feels part of the conversation. A lot of times it turns into one big conversation across the whole shop instead of three separate haircuts, and my kids dig it. It's relaxed, funny, welcoming, and still easy to get in and out without turning a haircut into a two-hour event. Most importantly, they're really good at what they do. They've learned my boys' hair and consistently get their cuts right. I even brought Grandpa in when he was visiting and he walked out completely happy too, so apparently they've got every generation covered. Honestly I can't say enough good things, I found Lance and Catrins Barber Shop probably 4 years ago and really loved his story about how he got started. I've had very long hair the past 7 years and I decided it was time to finally chop it off. I knew there was only one place I would go and one person I trusted...that was Lance. I sent him a couple ideas of what I wanted and he said no problem. Now usually with a decision like this one might get a little nervous day of, well the moment I walked in I was greeted by all the barbers and even some of the clients. He took amazing care of me and when he finally said are you ready to check it out, he turned me around to the mirror and man was I HAPPY with what he did. Lance and all the barbers at Catrins are very talented and definitely are masters at their craft! I definitely recommend them if you want a solid haircut or trim and of course some good conversation. What a great find on my last minute search for my 16 yr old son!! I have always been hesitant with barber shops, and honestly have avoided them all together, when it comes to my son's hair knowing he has wavy thick hair but also because of his cowlicks and not wanting anything military style. With that said, I took my chance and booked an appointment with Rebekah, for the next morning, before my son and I headed off to other adventures in the day. Rebekah was a great pick albeit the other barbers would have been great also had I given them a chance. Rebekah was knowledgeable, listened, was friendly, and all around a beautiful soul wrapped up in a person. The other barber present, Phil, which I also observed upon receiving client seemed equally the same as his young client sat there, comfortable, and explained what he was hoping for in said days cut. The facility was clean and well-kept and the 2 on staff, at the time, were superior on making one feel welcome. After having horrible luck with a couple barber shops in Escondido, not even being attended for lack of appointment (even though their sign said "walk-ins welcome"), I decided to make the trip out to Oceanside to Catrins, on a friend's recommendation. From the friendly greeting, as I walked in the door minutes before my appointment, I knew this was already way better than any other barber shop I had visited. I've just started growing out my beard so Lance gave me a recommendation on how he could shape it. Being my first time, I decided to let him do his thing, and the results were awesome. When you think of a barber shop, this is what comes to mind. I get my haircut by Cass, she is super chill and not only does she give fire haircuts she will work with you as well. I got my haircut from her and asked for a mid round fade with some inches off the top. She gave me exactly what I asked for I just didn't know I wouldn't like the mid fade. Gem of a spot right here. Located next to the "other" Teri Cafe off College / Plaza (by the illustrious Sizzler), it's easy to miss but def DO NOT miss this joint! The vibes are just different here. Clean and fresh atmosphere and they use black tool boxes as their work station. I described it horribly but it's cool as all hell. Lance took care of my son and me. And we both have wild hair. Dylan (4 years old) was at ease the whole time and looks fresh with a traditional side part cut. I am a bit more complicated and Lance was able to tame my hopeless beard and re-imagine my unwieldy Mohawk/Mullet into something fresh and stylish. Def great prices, def great atmosphere. Clean and receptive. It's more than a cut, it's an experience. They have some of the coolest merch out there too. Thursday was our first time in this new barber shop and it did not disappoint! Lance is the only barber that has been able to get my 17 month old son's hair cut right and he has earned his trust quickly. He was able to sit independently while getting his hair cut and Lance was patient enough to stop occasionally and give him breaks when he needed them. He paid attention to detail, is patient and professional. Everything about this shop makes you feel at home. Attention to Detail!!! Alex did an amazing job on my 14 yr old sons haircut. I have no idea how mens haircuts work so I left it up to Alex to consult with my son on how he wanted it. Hands down, best experience without a question! Not my words, coming from my 13 year old son that avoids haircuts like the black plague. I've avoided taking him as well because as a female, it's difficult to know what he wants or explain it correctly. After expressing my thoughts to my brother in law, he quickly recommended Catrins in Oceanside (Lance). I requested an appointment and received a response literally in minutes. Lance is just a down to earth easy going guy. He made my son feel comfortable. I didn't have to give any instruction at all. He spoke directly to him through the whole process, start to finish.
