CASH ONLY! NOTHING BUT CASH! ONLY CASH, NO CREDIT CARDS! So, you my want to bring cash if I wasn't clear. Barber Shop Express does have an in-store ATM, "Automatic Thieving Machine" that charges a $2.25 transaction fee in addition to whatever fee your own bank may charge. The total fee paid for a mere $20 withdrawal was $4.75; that's almost 25% of the amount I withdrew. So, to make it completely clear, CASH ONLY and bring it with you... 'Now that's out of the way! **Why the five star rating even after my opening rant?... Simple, the cash only policy was something I should've learned prior to going to the shop, that little hiccup is on me. I just wanted to add it to the first part of my yelp*view so that other first timers don't get caught having to pay monies that they could keep in their account. I saw the "Cash Only" sign ONLY after being seated in the barber's chair. After a brief panic attack and thinking, WTF am I going do?; I noticed the in-store ATM sitting, located against the center opposite wall. So, I wasn't completely boned. Again, do yourself a favor and save $$ from unnecessary service fee(s), and don't do what I did. - "Bring the green!" "The Family Barber Shop" - Three generations of barbers (Family business; over 25 years) 1st Gen - Grandfather/grandmother 2nd Gen - Mother/uncle (*Uncle owns/operates Del's Barber Shop in Escondido) 3rd Gen - Daughter (Melissa) 4th Gen - To be continued... Arrived @ the shop around 10:20am, Melissa and Cody were doing some basic house keeping. Cody: Are you ready? (Gestures towards one of the open six chairs) Me: I am but if it's possible, may I get a haircut from her. (I look towards Melissa) No disrespect meant... Cody: No, don't worry about it. Melissa: No problem, take a seat. 'And that was that. I told Melissa that I happened to be in the Oceanside area and was in need of a haircut; just a haircut and not the all so popular, trendy fade. (I blame AMC's Mad Men television series.) Barber Shop Express has a solid 4 1/2 star rating; 17 reviews. In truthfulness, it's not a very large number of reviews for a more broad, overall consensus especially with the average review per yelp*er about thirty write ups each. (17 yelp*ers; just over 500 reviews total) However, it was enough for me to stop by and give Barber Shop Express a try... Verdict: 5 Stars (Solid) The shop was well lit, spacious, clean, and "comfortable." It had a nice feel, even with "The Price is Right," playing on the TV; they're not perfect. Mellisa, very personable, open & friendly. She asked me what I wanted; told her just a basic standard cut, cleaned up, take some of the weight out. If I wanted fancy designs shaved into the side of my head, I'd hire a gardener for topiary work. Noways it's challenging to find a no nonsense, back to basics, solid haircut. About 90% of yelp* searches for a barber shop had mostly photos of fades; the other 10% were salons with the majority of images being of the shops or hair products. If you look hard enough, you can still find the classic, simple barber shop. Now, make no mistake, Melissa said that she can do a great fade; in fact she said that it's a more difficult cut than a basic one. She also cuts women's hair but does not offer any chemical treatments, "I'm strictly a haircut specialist." Melissa: Would you like me to trim your eyebrows? Me: Does it need it?... (I barely finished the question) Melissa: Yes. Me: *laughs (When did I become Eugene Levy?) I added, "So basically, that's your nice way of saying, 'Damn son, shave those things!'" Melissa laughed. After all this time and no one ever mentioned or suggested that I had a pair of caterpillars parked on my brow, "It's good to have friends!" (I briefly thought of having them braided.) As I was nearing the end of my haircut, another patron walked in and took a seat... Melissa: (Looks @ customer) I saw what happened to Glen, the redhead I was okay with the other guy but Glen! It crushed me! Patron: I wasn't surprised about the other guy BUT when I saw Glen get it, I was in shock. I sat there a moment as they chatted, "Geez, I hope nothing bad happened to their friends..." (Pause) Glen? Red head?... Then it hit me, "Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner!!" Ladies & gents, these two are talking my language... 'Of the dead. - "The Walking Dead," that is. (Bonus points to Barber Shop Express) 'And of course, I could not help but join in on the conversation. I know a few of you are saying, "We found that @ the premiere of Season 7 back in October of 2016? That's old news." Well, Melissa is catching up so if you decide to talk shop about TWD with her be sure to not drop any spoiler alerts, you may end up with a screwed up cut; just saying. Melissa told me that her grandmother still comes into the shop on Friday's to see clients. How cool is that?!... 'Very. Great haircut! Haircut: $15 (+ tip) Mahalo Melissa, until next time! *See uploaded photos Food: n/a Ambiance: 4+ Service: 5 Value: 5

Great barber shop!! Been taking my kids there since we moved here in July 2017. My oldest son is in ROTC so he gets a military fade and I'm never disappointed. My youngest son gets the cut that's in style right now with a hard part and I'm never disappointed with that either. Pictures are from one of the cuts we got there, but all of them have been similar to what you see in these pictures. Highly recommend for haircuts of all types!

Our barber was excellent and made a huge effort to make my 3 year old son's first barber shop experience a positive one. He has gotten terrible haircuts at local kids hair salons and I felt it was time for a real haircut. We will be back and hopefully will get the same barber. Thank you!

The hours.

Pat and his staff of barbers are terrific. They are professionals who listen and cut your hair the way you ask them to.

100% recommend. I mean to tell you when I say. (Live it when someone jumps in with that line...as…read moreopposed to, "I don't mean to tell you when I say...". But I digress! The folks over at "Evolved" Barbershop mean every single word they say and they stand by all of them, which on the night my 9 yr old boy and Ishowed up was quite a few of them. Seriously though, (and I do not have names nor would I share if I did), the dude at the front stall, as you enter, was very engaging and hilarious. From the moment we walked in his commentary was cordial, comical and engaging! I'm one of those dudes who is not overly fond of "small" talk. I am not a jerk about it and if you ask me some meaningless question, or point out some pointless fact such as, "Boy, it sure is getting chilly lately". I will respond to you, but I am not happy about it! I just like to keep the peace, ya know!? Now, to his actual haircut//"stylist". it was Fantastic/ She was Amazing! For $30, she threw some "rizz" on my boy! (At the age of 53, I have absolutely no clue if that word was just used properly or not?! Nonetheless, my kid was extremely happy about his new 'do, and I'm sure the 3rd grade "ladies" over at Whispering Oak Elementary would agree! My teenage daughter just "cringed". (I'm learning...). OK...well, now I feel would be a good time to conclude this review! Please know, and with 100% seriousness, our lady in the 2nd Booth from the front door was great! She was awesome at making my shy, always trying too hard to be cool, and quite picky, 9 year old feel great, comfortable and and with a newfound confidence. I suppose that is what a new look, expertly created, can do for you! I forgot to mention that she was quick, as well! We walked in (no appt) around 6:30pm pn a Tuesday night and there was only one other customer in the joint. During our 20 min or so, that guy finished and another guy entered and was promptly greeted and taken care of by the young man near the back. After roughly 17-20 minutes, my lil dood shook off the excess strands of cut hair and walked out of EVOLVED with a whole lot more "rizz" and you cannot place a price tag on that! My son's hair has NEVER looked better and I mean that!!! That is why we will be returning to EVOLVED every 3-4 weeks as we go forward!

From the moment you walk in, he makes you feel comfortable and taken care of. His attention to detail is unmatched -- clean fades, sharp lines, and always consistent. He actually listens to what you want and makes sure you leave the chair looking and feeling your best. Let me start by saying I had a great experience with the young lady who cut my hair. She was…read morefriendly, personable, and professional. I later found out she was an apprentice, and honestly, she did a solid job. My haircut turned out great overall. There were a few small spots around my ears and neckline that weren't fully cleaned up, but nothing major. She had a positive attitude, and I believe she's going to be excellent with more experience. Now, unfortunately, the rest of the experience was not great. When I walked in, a gentleman in the first chair to my left greeted me and asked if I was ready for my haircut. As I was scanning the QR code, I said yes. He then directed me to a chair a few spots down. When I walked over, the young man there continued having a conversation with another barber and didn't acknowledge me. I stood there unsure of where to sit or what to do. After what felt like an eternity, I had to ask where I was supposed to go. Without saying a word, he pointed to the apprentice behind me and told me to sit with her, then continued his conversation -- even blowing another barber's beanie off with the air blower they use to clean hair off clients. While sitting in the chair, I noticed hair all over the floor, and the same two employees were goofing around and behaving unprofessionally. It didn't feel like a welcoming or respectful environment. To be clear, my one-star rating is not because of the apprentice. She did her best and treated me kindly. The issue is with the lack of professionalism, poor work ethic, and immature behavior from the other staff member. Customer service matters, and unfortunately, this experience missed the mark. I was charged $35, which I don't mind paying for a good haircut -- but I do expect professionalism along with it. Because of the overall customer service experience, I will not be returning or recommending this place.

He's not one to sit there and be quick, so if you want quick, go somewhere else. If you want someone to take their time, pride themselves in their work, and bend your ear, he's your dude. I went in the first time with an open mind. My second time, he got me damn near perfect, I say it like that, because anyone who knows about your relationship with a barber knows it's going to take at least 5 cuts to get things dialed in. I always, and I mean always only leave quality reviews on Yelp. If I am giving a review, it means I appreciate the overall experience and quality of service I'm paying for. With that said, Khalif is now my regular barber. Also, I would recommend setting a time with him up because if not, you might have to wait. Remember you can't have all three ever (easy, cheap, fast). For example, if you want it cheap and easy it's not going to be fast. If you want it fast is not going to be cheap or easy. He's a great guy and the staff are great in there too!
