The music was fine, the people were fine and did I mention that they are dog friendly? I got to pet all the puppies! That just made me even happier if it was possible. **INITIAL REVIEW**…read more Apparently, the Yelp Skynet a.k.a. the AI that green or red flags reviews, doesn't like the actual name of this pub despite the fact it is the pub's name. Ergo, I will use the abbreviation VI for the remainder of this review. Besides that, you really can't go wrong going to any of the pubs in Historic Cocoa Village. VI is one of the pubs on the eastern side of the Village, in between the famous Fat Donkey's Ice Cream and the furthest east pub in the village, Ryan's. Appearance-wise, the outside fits primarily with the building, but there are some minute details that give it its own personality, primarily around its name. There is also a section of the road and sidewalk that have been garrisoned for VI as outdoor seating and games such as bean bag toss. Indoors, it is definitely your kinda pub that many of the patrons are friends. The right side (East) have long tables with many pub and drinking games such as Hook & Ring and Shut The Box. There is a bookshelf filled to the brim with board games in case patrons prefer traditional or childhood classics. The left side (West) is the "Patio," a room that is decorated by numerous plants, neon lighting, widker and a black-and-white checkerboard floor. Finally, the middle of the pub is the actual bar, in the form of an L-shape serving a nice arrangement of beers from many breweries, cideries, distilleries, and meaderies across the United States. I had the Kentucky Vanilla Barrel Cream Ale by Lexington Brewing and Distilling Co. Other beer selections I would recommend include the Pineapple Cider by the famous Carib Brewing Co. and the Mango Cart by Golden Road Brewing. Personal note on the latter: Mango Carts, well for me, only taste good when straight from the tap. Cans are not good. And the food, it is minimal, but boy does VI know how to tug at my heartstrings as everything they have features, or could feature, cheese. They have pretzels with cheese, pickles with cheese, and my personal favorite, grilled cheese sandwiches. And for the more sophisticated patron, they have numerous choices in charcuterie boards, too. I will also state the drink prices are a bit on the high side compared to some other places I been to. And there are two restrooms that are single-serving and gender-specific. I don't believe the latter has to be gender-specific because they are single-serving. The barn doors are an interesting choice because they are not very good at blocking sound. I guess that is why VI blasts the music so nobody can hear the flatulence. Speaking of music, VI does have a small corner stage for small acts, possibly singular, to perform. Unless there is a pull-out large stage for outdoor performances, I don't see big bands, per se in higher number of members, performing here unless they can all jam in that tight-spaced stage. Ultimately, I am going to give VI three-out-of-five stars for this review. They are a solid pub that has all the fixin's of a good bar to go to. Maybe it is safe to say they really don't stand out too much, especially amongst the more unique bars in Historic Cocoa Village. But still, a good place to have a drink with friends with that "Everybody knows your name" kinda vibe.

This latest visit was a perfect example of why many longtime customers are giving up. It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon, the kind of day when this place used to be packed with people waiting for a table. Instead it was surprisingly quiet and the inside bar was empty which should have tipped us off. After our recent experience, it's obvious why. We waited for over an hour for two sandwiches. Not a complicated order. Not a huge party. Two sandwiches. During that entire time, there was no sense of urgency from the bar waitress, no effort to keep us informed and no indication that anyone cared that customers were sitting watching the clock. When we finally asked about the delay, the response was "it's busy outside", it wasn't , in fact almost nobody. But after waiting for over an hour, customers don't want excuses - they want someone who actually cares and seems concerned about good service. A simple apology, an update, or even a little empathy would have gone a long way. Instead, the attitude seemed to be that our frustration was somehow our problem. Then the food arrived. The mahi Reuben was a complete disaster. The bread was so soggy and waterlogged that it literally fell apart. It wasn't just bad, it was inedible. Who knew that sour kraut must be at a premium when it wasn't even added. Any kitchen, or server, with even the slightest standards would have thrown it in the trash, along with the cold soggy fries. Instead, it was served without a second thought. The most frustrating part is that this isn't a one-time experience and seems to be more the norm than the exception. The kitchen has been going downhill for a while with LONG wait times and mediocre food and it seems that nobody is interested in fixing it. Orders take forever, quality continues to decline and the response from staff seems to range from indifference to excuses. A restaurant doesn't survive for decades because of its building or location. It survives because of loyal customers. I've know Pineda through many owners, it now feels like management is relying entirely on a reputation that was earned decades ago while doing very little to maintain it. After almost 30 years, this was the worst experience I've ever had here. An hour wait for two sandwiches, and inedible meal, and the only explanation being "it's not my fault." Maybe that's the problem. Everyone has an excuse, but nobody has a solution. At this point, the biggest disappointment isn't the food, it's the overwhelming feeling that nobody cares. And it's sad, as I've met the owners at their other establishment - I expect and deserve better - especially at $17 FOR A SANDWICH!!!
