I was in the area and needed a late lunch. I saw them on Too Good To Go and saw good reviews so decided to try it. I got a pizza which looked like it's probably their 12" (if it's their personal size then it was huge) and a sub sandwich. Both came out warm. A really good value. Food was good but not wow worthy but good. Pizza dough was thick and filling. Sandwich was also filled with a generous amount of meat and enough for 2 meals. I probably won't go again but worth trying. Nothing was bad. Easy to find parking but no place to sit and eat so I had to eat in my car.

Cheese pizza and Italian sub

Customer service was good. Place is very small and no place to eat. Parking is a bit tough and it's a rough neighborhood. I got a cheese pizza, carne asada burrito, and the star of it all was the Italian sub! I want to bo back just to order that! Also another hone table note is that the pizza crust was really good.

Catalano's Pizzeria is a solid spot, especially if you're looking to save some cash through TooGoodToGo. I've ordered two "Surprise Bags" and got a generous haul: One tuna sub, a personal-sized pepperoni pizza, and two servings of spaghetti with meatballs. The value for what you pay is honestly impressive, and it stretches for a few meals. In my honest opinion, I think the food is decent. They have good flavor, but nothing mind-blowing. That said, I've been spoiled by top-tier, authentic Italian in NYC and even had the chance to try the real deal in Italy during my study abroad. I didn't eat the pizza though because, as a proud Brooklynite, I'm pretty particular about my pizza, so I ended up giving it to a homeless person near the restaurant. If I were ordering straight from the menu as a regular customer, it'd be a solid 3 stars. It was satisfying enough to fill my stomach, but not exactly something to rave about. The location isn't in the greatest area, but they're on the corner of an intersection where it's visible enough that you don't have to stress too much about safety. The real standout is the staff. They're super friendly while having fun listening to music while they work, and the owner clearly cares about both the surrounding community and promoting the importance of reducing food waste. Selling surplus food at such a fair price shows a lot of generosity, and I respect that. If you're looking for an affordable Italian spot that'll fill you up while supporting a business that genuinely cares about its community, Catalano's is worth checking out.

Second time here. First time was during the Super Bowl. Second time was for a late lunch. Overall it's okay. I got carne asada quesadilla and a personal pizza for lunch. It was decent. Okay quality. The price makes it taste better for sure. Customer service is on point. Everyone is super great. It's a small place. You come. You order. You leave. No places to sit and eat or sit and wait. Parking is all on the street. The spot is on the corner.

First of all, it took me 20 minutes to drive around the entire block to find parking close to this place! Beware of the parking situation. Houses around are sketchy. That's no seating inside or out. It is take out only. Service was amazing! Prices are high, but they have specials and their lunch special for $10 can't be beat. I got a small pepperoni pizza and small pepperoni / sausage pizza. They cooked it in 10 minutes. I had to have a slice on the way to my car. It was steaming hot. The cheese pull on this thing was out of this world! The crust was the best I've ever had! It was airy. I would come back for the crust, even with the horrible parking situation.

Ordered a pizza and a torta. Both were good. Staff was very nice and welcoming. This pizza shop is located in a neighborhood so parking is very limited.

$17 cash for medium size meat lover pizza, thin crust, no cheese, marinara sauce, ham, pepperoni and sausage. Not bad, the dough very fresh and stay true to the thickness you required. 3 stars for the location, hard to find parking, sketchy area 3 stars for not able to take regular EBT snap, used to accept EBT cash aid, but system no longer works until further notice. Not sure when the kitchen handle your food, they supposed to wear gloves or not, because I caught one of the employee used her bare hands to grab a chunk of sausages and sprinkled it on my pizza. Yet I ate it and seemed fine, still I prefer the hygiene for this place. Finally I think ordering online would be faster, it takes longer for them to heat your pizza if you ordered in store. According to all the Yelp signage, I guess they have been recognized for their quality of food, but if they can fix everything else, including their customer service, it could be a perfect pizza place.

One seated, we were approach to get beverages ordered, and informed that our assigned server would take over to get our food orders. The menu consisted of authentic Italian appetizers and meals. The ability to learn about different types of noodles, and select for our meals, added to the experience. In addition to noodle selections, we were also able to select the sauces that would accompany the dish. They all sounded unique and delicious. The Impepata di COZZE was our appetizer selection and had fresh mussels, white wine and garlic amongst other fresh ingredients. Serving size was more than enough for our party of 2, and was not able to finish in anticipation of our meals. For my meal, I ordered the Malfalde pasta with Funghi sauce. Sauce consisted of creamy fresh Cremini, shiitake & Porcini mushrooms, parmigiano, crispy Parmigiano, crumble, parsley. Added shrimp to complete the meal. Mafalde pasta was long and had a ribbon appearance similar to lasagna noodles. The ingredients spoke for themselves. Freshness throughout each and every bite! Will definitely return the next time. I'm in the San Diego area. The bar for Italian cuisine has been raised substantially!!!

Restaurants and bars filled to the brim. Lack of street parking availability. With that being said, after circling around for a while, I found a free parking spot on the street five minutes away by foot. Ambiance (4/5): While Bencotto has a nice interior, I went with some al fresco dining on their front patio. There are 20 or so seats available right off the street, so it's not a large patio by any means, but it's nice. The weather was a little chilly by San Diego standards, so they had some heaters out there. It always reminds me of Europe when I'm dining al fresco. Service (3/5): A little slow at times, but overall, pretty good. My waiter was friendly, he just could have stopped by a little quicker. Still solid though. Drinks (4/5): They have a nice selection of wine. I ended up rolling with an Italian beer I had never had before instead. It was a lager and they served it with a chilled glass which is always a nice touch. Food (4/5): The reason I came delivered. Their most popular entree is pasta cooked in a cheese wheel. The pasta is in a creamy truffle sauce with mushrooms. No protein but you can add some for an additional charge. I added grilled chicken. What's awesome about this dish is that they cook it for you inside by the hostess stand. So you can go there and see it happening. My server didn't give me a heads-up (shame on him) but luckily, someone at a table close to me did after me, so I joined to see their food being prepared. I also ordered the gnocco frito which is puffy fried bread. You get four pieces and I had never had this type of Italian bread. Not amazing, but it complemented the pasta well. All of their pasta is made in house and you can taste the difference. The cheese wheel pasta was absolutely delicious. I was pumped to cross this bucket list item off my list.

One thing we learned: if you decide to make a reservation here, especially on a weekend night, arrive early to accommodate the time it takes to find parking. The restaurant does not have its own parking lot, it's street parking-only and space is tough to come by. We circled around for at least 15 minutes before securing a spot and wound up a little over 20 minutes late for our reservation. Thankfully, we still had a table set up and waiting for us. It was very busy when we walked in, it appeared as though the restaurant was near-capacity. The restaurant has a nice, rustic charm to it, but I'll admit some of the charm is taken away by the crowd of noisy people. The restaurant space is small with as many tables and chairs that can possibly fit, which inevitably means tables are very close to one another. It would help if the restaurant acquired a much larger space, or if it got rid of maybe 30% of the tables/chairs so that seating could be more spaced-out. Service was initially slow, but understandable considering the completely packed venue. Our servers were incredibly friendly and provided exceptional service. They were patient and informative in answering our questions (particularly about the "cheese wheel"). We ordered the house specialty bread with 3 different spreads as an appetizer, the lamb shank was my date's entree choice while I ordered the pappardelle pasta with short rib. The bread was truly excellent, we both devoured it. My dish was also excellent, the short rib was very rich and flavorful and the pasta was cooked well. I tasted my date's lamb dish, which I felt was bland compared to mine and I wasn't crazy about it. My date seemed to enjoy it, though. We were too full to order any dessert, so I can't speak for their desserts. The food I did try was mostly amazing. We will likely be back, although we might try coming on a Monday or Tuesday night to avoid the crowds and have an easier time with parking.
