After approving our application and after I personally spent over 30 minutes meeting the dogs, they insisted that my partially disabled wife travel a 2.5‑hour round trip so a medically untrained volunteer could "evaluate" whether she might fall on a dog. That person would then report their impressions to a committee for final approval. I am fully mobile and would be the primary caregiver for the dogs. My wife simply wanted companionship. No other rescue in our 20 years of adopting dogs has ever required this kind of intrusive and medically unqualified assessment, nor have they refused to offer reasonable accommodation such as a home visit. This process effectively penalizes disabled applicants and creates barriers that are unnecessary, inappropriate, and discriminatory in practice. For an adoption fee of $600, adopters deserve a respectful, professional, and accommodating process. Until they revise these policies or offer a reasonable alternative, this review stands. Apparently the concept of service or companion animals for the elderly or partially handicapped is beyond the capacity of this rescue. They will claim that they just want to protect the animal while providing unqualified and a harshly judgemental attitude toward the human client.

The owner was hospitalized and the fabrication that the dog was wandering the street and not surrendered by the person who was supposed to be boarding them is harmful and out right wrong. While researching your rescue I ran into some horrible reviews about your character. Please try to make things right. If this message does not get a response I will be reaching out to news outlets in the Florida area and nationwide in hopes to reunite sushi with his rightful owner who loves him and has had him for well over three years. and to future adopters: it's not too late to find an animal rescue organization that moves with compassion and integrity.

I based this on talking to people who came into the thrift shop and had been to the shelter and even my own limited contact there. Then I started attending board meetings and began to see that a transition was going on, in an attempt to improve the Humane Society's relationship with customers, donors, its own volunteers, other animal rescue organizations, and more. It was interesting to start out watching this process, and then rewarding to begin taking part in it as I continued to attend the meetings and volunteer in the thrift shop. Under new leadership, the organization has now rebuilt old bridges (and even some bed bridges) with various animal rescue organizations and other animal loving groups and individuals and has established itself in the community as a valuable ally in Lake County efforts to rescue and improve the lives of animals. They even rescue animals from shelters in other counties that are not 'no kill.' Okay. that sounds like an ad, but that doesn't make it less true. Even the thrift store where I volunteer is operated completely by volunteers so all the money raised goes towards the shelter.

I went with my friend so her daughter could pick out two of them. This place is absolutely beautiful. When we first arrived, we were greeted by Ellen and her super friendly pup, and they showed us around. We got to go into the aviary, where I fell in love with a darling cockatiel. First off, the aviary is stunning. Ellen and Darien take in rescued birds, rehabilitate them, and re-home the ones that they can. They go to great measures to ensure that the right person adopts the right bird, and they provide wonderful resources and hands-on training. The birds are extremely well taken care of and cared for by Ellen and her staff. As someone who believes in animal advocacy, this means a lot to me. I am now finishing the process of adopting that sweet little cockatiel (she comes home tomorrow), and I am so overwhelmed with gratitude for Ellen, Darien and all the amazing work they do for the animals at the Rescue & Sanctuary. I highly recommend with a full and happy heart!!

On September 9th, my family adopted two kittens, Aren and Delle, from this rescue. We were told they had recently recovered from an upper respiratory infection and were now healthy. Unfortunately, less than a month later, our sweet Delle passed away on October 10th from FIP -- a fatal illness that likely developed from an infection that hadn't fully resolved. We followed all the recommended vet care and sought immediate treatment the moment she showed signs of illness, but despite every effort, she declined quickly. It was a deeply traumatic and heartbreaking experience for our family -- and for Aren, her sister, who is now grieving as well. I want to make it clear that I deeply understand and appreciate the mission behind animal rescues and the challenges they face in caring for so many animals in need. My intention in sharing this isn't to criticize, but to hopefully encourage more thorough medical reviews and communication before adoption. Even small improvements in diligence could help prevent another family from being blindsided by such a devastating situation. I emailed the rescue on October 11th, not in anger but simply to inform them of what happened. Unfortunately, I never received a response. Delle was deeply loved and is deeply missed. I truly hope that sharing her story leads to positive changes for future adoptions -- and to more happy, healthy forever homes.
