Incredible winery. So much to do and see that you need a day to get it all in. Stop in the gift shop and get the list of things to see and take off on a self guided tour. **Disclaimer: this review is based off self-guided tour for wedding & winery** Came here on a Saturday afternoon (which we scheduled) for a self-guided tour. We were so amazed during our private zoom tour that we couldn't go any longer without seeing it in person. It tooks us about a half hour to tour the entire grounds...or at least until we found the enchanted forest (you heard me correctly). During the tour, we made a few passes through the winery and couldn't help but finally stop and have a tasting. They were exquisite wines and ciders. We only tried the whites and 1 cider because they ran out. I would highly recommend doing a tasting when they first open so you can try all options. We sprung for the $20 flight (5 options; 3oz pours) and split it between the 2 of us. They also have a small food menu that I'll be taking part in next time. After having visited the area many times this was on our list as a fun venue to check out, and this trip we had great weather and a free day so we headed toward the castle. The directions are easy to follow and upon arriving the huge parking lot has good directions of where to park and how to proceed to the main entrance. A friendly lady greeted us and we chose to pay $15 for an adult self-guided tour which we felt was reasonable for the size of the castle. They gave us a self-guided tour sheet with tons of directions and explanation. There are wonderful narrated movies along the way whee you can hear Linda the current owner tell about the castle, the various rooms and the gardens. We wandered for at least an hour and had some amazing points that kept us entertained with all the collections and antiques stores in various places around the castle. We loved how they had renovated and given the castle a renewed life as a wedding and event venue, as well as giving visitors the opportunity to explore. I was a guess at a wedding . I am also a server . The food was absolutely terrible ! The tenderloin which you got one piece maybe cut an inch thick was dried out and overcooked. It was served with spaetzle with was over cooked and burnt on one side . The vegetable broccoli and corn over cooked! If I could give 0 stars I would. My wife and I got married in October of 2024. We had consistent issues with the castle staff while setting up our wedding. We were making installments on the cost of the wedding and at one point were short less than $100 of the total balance. The castle threatened us withholding the setup packet which was due 2 weeks before the wedding, which is a $25 per day fee for every day the packet is past due. The castle staff was nasty when processing payments or uncovering our balance due. We mailed in checks to avoid the CC processing fee, and often times they would run late in the mail. No matter how early we mailed them. Day of our wedding, the castle staff did not deliver to our photographer the necessary requirements within the week time frame that was promised, due to this, out photographer, whom lives in Ohio was unable to get a permit to fly her drone. Our vendor was unable to refund us the money, and because of the castle, we have no drone pictures of our big day. Weddings were not separated day of the way the castle promised, we ran into and waited for pictures of other parties after our ceremony. The day of, we also were changing to head to our honeymoon, and were unable to use the restroom due to the bathrooms being overflowed with toilet paper and waste. The general manager, Kristin, proceeded to blame our guests for being unruly. We did not have many children, and it would not have been an issue of too much toilet paper. We were never delivered our wine that we were required to purchase from 1918 cellars on property. The castle, when asked, shirked responsibility to our food vendor, whom said otherwise. Our food vendor informed us it was the castle's responsibility to get us wine as it was in the cooler. When speaking with the general manager, we asked for money back, and were met with complete lack of accountability, responsibility or understanding. This is a business that gets your money and doesn't much care of the end result, or how to improve. They may be the premier wedding destination in Michigan, but I would take your money to a smaller operation that cares about making the big day special, because Castle Farms does not. For what it's worth, the general manager accused me of Slander when i told her i was going to share our experiences and lack of accountability on the castle's part. This is complete transparency on our end and our experience, and my God's honest review. The Castle is beautiful, and we love our pictures, loved our day. We did not love the services rendered from the castle, and what was delivered vs what was promised. On the day of, our day of coordinator let us know the castle was extremely difficult to get in touch with, and the castle's contact person was difficult to lock down. We never met our day of coordinator that was provided by the castle, and am super thankful for our day of coordinator we hired outside of the castle. Kristin, the general manager, was rude, did not allow us to speak, and when we got frustrated, condescendingly said we were getting unruly until she hung up on me. The only remediation she offered was delivering wine to us via mail. After I posted my review on Google, the Castle stated we 'yelled at' Kirstin on the phone, which was not the case. We missed out on many vendor experiences due to the fault of the Castle. My other vendors have been amazing to work with, and offered help with dealing with The Castle. Kirstin, the general manager, blamed and bad mouthed my vendors, even stating that "my other vendors stated that we had problems with them, and she isn't surprised we are having issues". We brought this to the attention of our other vendors, who were shocked. This never happened. We have had nothing but wonderful things to say about all of our vendors, except The Castle. Kirstin blamed Our photographer for the lack of drone photos, even though, to our knowledge, the drone information was delivered two days prior to our wedding. Our photographer lives in another State, and would have had to make arraignments to deliver on what The Castle needed. There is no Accountability with the castle. They do not care about the day of experience, and actually accused us of using other bridal areas, being in other wedding areas, etc. None of those things happened. Kirstin threw in our face we used another bridal suite to get ready the day of, which is an added cost, which was completely untrue. We actually were rushed out of our bridal suite as we were getting ready, as another wedding was taking place in our ceremony area, we Were told we would have uninterrupted access to the facilities the day of. Poor communication, lack of accountability, false promises and heavy threats thereafter have caused us to leave poor reviews. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE reconsider using the castle, and look at smaller operation that have your needs and wants at heart. read more

Held my wedding here in Aug 2022. The worst wedding venue experience of my life. Whenever I think about our wedding, I get pissed off. In a nutshell, the coordinator was a complete bitch and didn't even bother to look at the 20 PAGE DOCUMENT THEY MAKE YOU FILL OUT WITH THE MOST MINOR DETAILS THAT ARE ARE SUPPOSED TO USE TO NOT FUCKING BOTHER YOU...ya know...the one getting married. The same coordinator spoke ill of me (the bride) near the bridal party whenever I walked away because I had to direct her dumb ass due to her lack of actually doing what we paid an arm and a leg to do. She was barely knew her job. I had to set the music up and play it on my phone AS MY BRIDAL PARTY WAS WALKING DOWN. Her assistant was no better....had been working there only 3 days and the main coordinator LEFT HER TO RUN THE REST OF THE WEDDING. This girl acted like she could barely speak English, didn't move the cake out for us to cut it, didn't move the cake for our first dance....the list goes on. I had to DIRECT EVERYTHING, THE FOOD, THE MUSIC FOR THE PARTY, THE BAR....It was absolutely awful. We paid for them to clean it up after the party (which was not cheap) but they threatened my bridal party that extra charges would be applied if THEY didn't clean up....EXCEPT THEY STILL HAD PRIOR WEDDING SHIT AROUND THE ROOM THEMSELVES. You can take a self-guided tour and experience it at your own pace, or you can take a guided tour and learn more about the castle's history. It even has a fun scavenger hunt for your children! They opened a new pub, the Castle Pub. Wonderful place for a cocktail. This is located at Castle Farms in Charlevoix, Michigan.

This event venue is a sight to behold. The grounds looked pretty nice but it was too cold to wander around much. There's a gift shop here, cute gnomes, fairy and unicorn stuffs. My mom and I visited yesterday for an arts and crafts show. She didn't buy anything cause nothing called to her. I bought a candle holder which resembled a birch tree on the outside. Prices kinda high, but I'm no artist so I respect when people are talented. Some stuff may not be for everybody, but there's something for everyone. This place holds many weddings and was an infamous concert venue in the past, you can read about it in one of the hallways by the restrooms. Interesting place. read more

After reading the reviews & really wanting to go somewhere different, I decided to go to Castle Farms. So glad I did! I think it's a little overpriced for admission to a place where you walk around on your own (although you get $1 off with AAA), but still, it was so interesting. I spent 3 hours wandering around! They take a lot of pride in their trains, and while the actual trains are cool, the toys on wheels are kind of silly. But I did like how you could walk through the whole area; it kind of reminded me of the trains on MisterRogers' Neighborhood from when I was little. The duck pond was rather entertaining; those ducks are definitely used to being fed, as they followed me wherever I went -- until a worker drove up and they all immediately swam to the end of the pond & got out! It was rather amusing. The woman in the office/gift shop area was very nice, and I felt like I was having an actual conversation with her -- until I heard her say the exact same thing, word for word, to other people as they walked in. But, at least she has it down well enough to not sound rehearsed. It really did feel like a castle, although it never really was. But they play up that aspect of it with the Enchanted Forest, which is just a little wooded area where they've scattered little gnomes and so forth. And if you have a fairy garden & are looking to add to it, their gift shop has a pretty good selection of accessories at decent prices. read more

Our visit was on Friday, 10/9 at 2pm. It was four of us ladies and it was the first stop on our girlfriend's 40th birthday weekend. The grounds are stunning! It's so peaceful and the landscaping is so well manicured. I can only imagine the special events that take place here. It makes me want to get married all over again lol We arrived early for our lunch reservation so we did a self guided tour of the castle grounds and sat for a bit in the gazebo near the water. We could've stayed there all day had it been a tad bit warmer or less of a breeze. It was so calming. The castle was easy to find via GPS. The parking is plentiful. We didn't get to tour the inside of the castle as we ran out of time after lunch and wine tasting at the bistro on the grounds. I would love to return for a full tour. We thoroughly enjoyed our early afternoon lunch and wine tasting at 1918 Cellars there on location. We loved the atmosphere, service, food and the wine of course The flights were reasonably priced and being able to make your selections offered variety. read more

I always been fascinated with Castles and Castle Farms is one of the most amazing castles that I've seen. I rode on the tram with G (driver), really considerate type of guy. I liked how he sanitized the whole tram before the ride, and he drove at a good pace so we could take pics on the tour. Castle Farms welcome center was ran by two fine women who were very helpful and courteous. I found out today that they host weddings too. What I enjoyed the most was photographing all of the hot spots! read more

We had a very in depth guided tour of this unique attraction during our August Michigan trip. It is always uplifting when personal fortune is used to preserve an interesting architectural work. Mrs. Mueller is to be commended for the extensive and accurate renovation she undertook here. Now this is a venue that all of us can enjoy and use, and ..hopefully..the revenues from events will support the site in years to come. We enjoyed learning the history here, and the art and statuary, but the gardens were the most striking. These careful and well kept plantings grace and uplift the starkness of the stone. There were only a few rooms to go through and most of the rooms were filled with random/weird toys/exhibits that have nothing to do with the property at all except that maybe the owner likes them. None of the furniture/furnishings have anything to do with a "castle" or the property's origin as a barn. Complete waste of time and money. Definition not worth the $80 I spent to take my kids. Nothing of any historic value pert to the property. If you like dragons and train sets with cartoon characters it might be interesting to you. read more

Castle Farms is a dreamy venue straight out of a fairy tale. Ideal for a wedding and/or reception, Castle Farms is nestled between Lake Michigan and Lake Charlevoix. In nearby downtown Charlevoix, there are plenty of quaint hotels and bed and breakfasts for guests making the trek from out of town. For my friend's wedding reception, they held a cocktail hour in the main courtyard. There is easy access right off the main courtyard to the women's bathroom which also has a cozy little powder room attached to it-perfect for a quick breather or touch-ups for the bride and her bridal party! It seems they offer quite a few spaces for events-I caught some glimpses of gorgeous indoor space, with lofted, wood beam ceilings and cobblestone walls. My friend's reception was held under a tent on the property. Apparently there was another wedding reception going on, although I never heard any competing noise or noticed foreign guests where our reception was being held-it felt like our party was the only one on the property. A stunning venue, Castle Farms was the perfect foundation for a night of unbridled joy and celebration with great friends. read more

No, you do not need to be a fan of Medieval Times to have a great party/wedding here. Although the place looks like a giant castle, all types of events could be held here. Some friends of mine just held their wedding here and it's a great place. The ceremony was in a great hall lined with windows. I was told there is also an upstairs room for ceremonies as well, not much natural light in their though. Behind the ceremony was a giant chess set you could play with. There were giant thrones for photos and outside a miniature train set up as well. The room where the reception was held was great. It's almost barn-like in it's appearance with a huge ceiling and wide space. It was great for the wedding as there was room for the dance floor, hors d'ouvres, and the bar. In my experience, the people here go the extra mile. My husband, daughter and I were all in a wedding held here over the weekend, and as far as I could see, everything went off without a hitch - other than the bride and groom getting hitched! The wedding coordinator, Alex, was awesome. Our bride had a few fun, non-traditional aspects that she wanted to incorporate into the ceremony that could have thrown a coordinator off, but I never heard Alex tell her she couldn't do something or make fun of her ideas, she simply figured out how to make it work. I loved that! But there was an added personal touch that inspired this review. I bought a necklace in the gift shop to wear for the wedding, but when I tried to take the tag off, the chain broke right in the middle and was unusable. I wasn't too flustered about not wearing it for the wedding, but I definitely wanted to get a replacement. Unfortunately the gift shop had closed by the time I could do anything about it. We told one of the other coordinators, and without any hesitation, she took down my information and said they would ship me a replacement necklace as we were heading out of town early the next morning. The necklace I had picked out had a Petoskey stone heart on it, and I took time looking through each necklace to pick out the stone I liked the look of best, so I was sad I probably wouldn't get the same one, but I didn't bother bringing that up. However, the next morning, I got a voicemail from Jessica in the gift shop saying she was just sending out my necklace, and because Petoskey stones are all very different, she just put the pendant I had chosen on a new chain. I was so thrilled! I thought that kind of service and attention to detail needed to be rewarded, so... I hope this review is reward enough! Thank you all for a wonderful weekend! read more

Others have reviewed Castle Farms as a wedding or corporate event venue, but this review is as a visitor attraction. We have been coming to Charlevoix for the past seven summers. We've always driven by Castle Farms and wondered what was within its gates. We put it on our list of things to do this year, and we ALMOST put it off until next summer, but thankfully we had a chance encounter with the owners husband, Richard Mueller at Juilerette's on the morning we were headed home. Richard happened to pass our table and struck up a conversation with our young son. He was wearing a "Castle Farms" shirt and we told him how we'd always wondered about Castle Farms. Richard mentioned that they have a collection of over 40 trains, and before you know it, we had two little boys ready for an adventure. So before the long drive home, we stopped off for the self guided tour of Castle Farms. I cannot say enough good things about this attraction. First of all, the Castle architecture itself is beautiful. The first stop on on the tour was a short movie describing the history and restoration of the property. From the film, it is evident that restoring Castle Farms is the true passion of owner Linda Mueller. She has given Charlevoix such a beautiful gift in lovingly restoring the property to it's original glory with all the modern conveniences one would want. It's a beautiful melding of old and new. The gardens are breathtaking. There are unlimited areas one could pause and reflect on life, and ample space for the little ones to run around. The possibilities for photos are endless. The self guided tour provides kids with a clip board that has scavenger hunt questions, which my 6 year old took charge of. You also get a short description of each of the stops on the tour, which are clearly marked. My 3 year old enjoyed feeding the fish in the ponds using the fish food dispensers, while my husband and I relaxed on the swings and gazebos. The boys really enjoyed the hedge maze and especially the trains which as promised by Richard, there were many. Some of them were even made out of familiar kids toys and characters. I am sure the trains are not meant for touching, but they are accessible and my son got such a kick out of helping one of the trains that fell of the track back on. The trains run above and below the hedge maze and are incorporated into a little castle play structure with a slide. In that same area is an alphabet herb garden with herbs and plants that correspond with each letter of the alphabet. If you have little ones, plan a good portion of your time in this part of the tour, as it was very hard to get my boys to move on. In some of the areas of the castle there are various museum displays. The collections are unrelated, but from the same general historical era. There is an extensive display of photography equipment, a display of china dishes and tea sets, memorabilia from the property as it was when it was first built to showcase the catalog from Sears in the early 1900s. There is military memerobila as well as toys and amusements from the last century. My husbands favorite museum items were the t-shirts and posters from the "Who Rocked the Castle?" display. In the1960's, Castle Farms was a concert venue which hosted big name music acts. It boggled his mind that the likes of Ozzy Osbourne and Metallica played Charlevoix in the height of their careers. My boys also enjoyed the giant chess set. They have no idea how to play but had a blast moving the chest pieces about. There were three weddings scheduled for later that day. We were told we could walk in those rooms but were not to disturb anything. There were several people setting up that did not seem to mind us passing through. Each banquet room was unique and each so beautiful, that my husband and I remarked that we wish we could re-do our wedding at Castle Farms. I highly recommend this destination for families that are visiting Charlevoix. Don't just pass it by on the way in and out of Downtown Charlevoix each year. You will have a great time and get great photos. I am so glad we met Richard and he invited us for a tour. We really enjoyed ourselves and will be back! Thank you, Richard! read more

When we visited Charlevoix, MI we decided to tour Castle Farms. It started out as a dairy farm for the head of Sears. He would buy farm machinery that he would sell in the catalog and could showcase how well they worked at his place. Built in the early 1900's, it was fashioned after what barns and castles in Normandy, France were like at the time. After the farm closed, it fell into disrepair, but re-emerged as an art gallery, and once as a music theatre and summer concert venue. Finally, it was purchased by the present owners and brought back to the estate you see today. All told, Linda Mueller poured $15 million into the project, but it is worth every penny. It seems to have become a renowned wedding/reception site. Who wouldn't want to get married in a castle? It has finally been able to make a profit now. The gardens are spectacular in scale and color; while the entire place inside and out is well-maintained. You can choose from self-guided tours or public guided tours. Be aware that the guided tours happen at 10 or 1, so plan accordingly. Visitors of all ages won't want to miss the largest working outdoor Model Railroad in Michigan over 70 G-scale trains operate on more than 2,500 feet of track. Also, know that the train exhibit is open from May to October if weather is good. They also have more than one giant chess set where you have to walk each piece to it's new position. There is a lot of history and beauty in this castle. You won't regret going. read more

My hubs and I recently had our wedding at CF and was happy overall with our experience. While we were living in Washtenaw County at the time, I researched quite a few wedding venues in the area and decided to look outside the area, because the venues around us were wayyy over our budget. Okay, I know you're thinking what the heck was it? $30,000 +? We decided to have a very small and intimate wedding, and decided to book this venue when we learned exactly what was going to be included. We were also given a small discount for booking on the day of the walk through, which was nice. Six months prior to our wedding, my husband accepting a job in California and off we were! Since we had put deposits on our venue, as well as our vendors, we decided to go ahead with the wedding. During this whole time, I can't say enough about how helpful the CF staff was! Our initial emails were with Sarah H. and then the closer we got to our date, Brittany B. was the venue coordinator. To be honest, I didn't really know what to ask, but definitely made sure to email her with any and all questions I had, whenever they came up and I never felt like I was a nuisance for asking all the questions I had. On the day of the wedding, they only thing that irked me was the self-guided tours going on. While I was setting up the room with my detail angels, there were quite a few people on the tours that went through the room. I probably should've closed one of the doors, but I was annoyed and worried that someone might take something. I kind of wish the coordinators had given us a heads up of this. The location itself is beautiful...I mean it's a freakin castle and a piece of history. Who wouldn't want to get married in a castle!? We got married in the Queens Courtyard and had our reception in the tavern. We were told there would be castle farm staff around to direct guest, however I didn't see any and even had a few wedding crashers. I would rate this place a 3.5 overall. read more

But at 15 dollars each and then 10 dollars each for her 3 toddlers we felt it was way too expensive. I have to say that it was the worst that I've ever had and this was disappointing because this place is kinda neat, However not as cool as it looks from the outside. The bartender on 11/11/11 upstairs was a major problem! Not only was she a half hour late, leaving a guest to bartend for the party, but she kept asking other guests to cover her for her multitude of breaks. All in all id have so say she actually worked for about an hour... Then she has the audacity to call me a CUNT! With Michigan state orders, we were prepared to entertain our guests in a TENT to abide my State restrictions. Only to find out that 5 days before the States restrictions were lifted... other guests could have their event INSIDE AND EXCEED THE GUEST LIMITS FOR INDOOR ENTERTAINING!! You want to use the bridal suite to get ready = EXTRA. You want a golf cart for handicapped guests to use a real bathroom versus their PORT A JOHN outside = EXTRA!! You want to share your venue day with rehearsals and the Castle's revenue generating 'tours' = good luck working around THEIR schedule. You want your signage that you bought for your guests left inside and not put out= GOT it! If you are looking for a stress free venue to have your event = LOOK ELSEWHERE!! I got married here on 10.03.17 and my wedding was literally a fairytale. First of all, the venue is GORGEOUS. Walking down the aisle and saying our vows with the views of the castle was the most amazing experience. My coordinator was Autumn. Autumn was seriously AMAZING! I planned this wedding from California by myself and she was always quick to respond or answer questions. She was so awesome at rehearsal and wedding day as well. She helped with soooo much and it was nice to just relax and enjoy my wedding day. The day was even better and more dreamy than I ever imagined it. I don't even have my professional photos back just iPhone photos and everyone tells me my wedding looked better than bridal magazine photos. I HIGHLY recommend this venue. read more

UPDATE 3/5/17: We did receive a new signed check. I would like to respond to the comment that Castle has now posted on all my reviews. The reason we did not notify Castle of our concerns was because we were on our honeymoon. I feel as though Castle may have forgotten that people do tend to take those after their wedding and that the last thing we wanted to do is express our "concerns" after an awful vendor experience. My reviews were also not negative, they were honest. And I don't know about any other bride out there, but I didn't want one of the most important events in my life to be a learning experience for their staff. Refunding our money doesn't undo the fact that my wedding day was ruined, but it's the only option available to us. UPDATE 2/27/17: We received an unsigned check from them so we cannot cash our refund. UPDATE: In addition to posting our review of Castle, we also contacted them directly (yesterday) through email with the full list of issues we had at the venue and with venue staff. Today, the events director there responded to us on behalf of herself and the general manager. They expressed how heartbroken they were to receive our email and sent their sincerest apologies to my husband and myself. They also will be issuing a full refund for our wedding due to the treatment we received and how poorly our wedding went. They also stated that they plan to counsel their team on maintaining professionalism with their clients. ORIGINAL: If I could give negative stars, I would. We contracted with Castle Farms to use their facility for our wedding. They provided and required we used their venue coordinator. On our wedding day, the facility was not setup correctly and the heat system was broken. They provided a turbine heater, but that also broke 3 hours before the wedding and almost lit my husband on fire. They provided no solution and this was a February wedding, so it was very cold. They also decided to the day before our wedding throw on some hidden fees regarding the bridal suite that was not previously mentioned in any paperwork or verbally. Watch out, they will nickel and dime you for everything. The coordinator, Autumn Tall, did not follow through on numerous items during the setup and wedding, most of which were even requested on email and agreed on prior to our arrival. She acted like she didn't care that we were there and would rather flirt with her assistant, which she did often, even ignoring us to do it. She also moved our décor because she didn't like how it looked and said it looked better her way, even after we said we liked it better the other way. During our rehearsal, she even made tasteless and offensive jokes about my husband and the pastor. It was mortifying and managed to offend everyone in the room... us, pastor, wedding party, and the parents. There were also children present. The level of unprofessionalism is astounding. The worst thing was Autumn destroyed the one moment my husband and I wanted to share, my walk down the aisle. Though we had already worked out our cues and how we wanted to stand, during rehearsal Autumn told us how it had to go, which was how she wanted. My husband had to stand outside the building - in the cold, in February - with the pastor, she would then cue them first, followed by the wedding party, the flower girls, then at last me. We rehearsed and it was that simple. On the day of the wedding, they put my husband and the pastor outside with Autumn's assistant. They waited for the cue. After hearing nothing for a long time, our pastor said are they going to start soon. My husband then saw the entire party in the room and me, just waiting for him. He was livid and just walked in, covering his anger with a smile. I was trying to hide tears as I just walked an aisle to meet him and he was nowhere to be found. On top of all this, they brought tours to my and the bridesmaids' changing room (bridal suite) throughout the day while we tried to get ready. What if we had been getting changed?? And random strangers were just popping their head in??? And as we were packing up one of their staff stole a cupcake from us... that was for guests and us... from a different vendor whom we paid for ourselves. All the while we were packing up they complained they wanted to leave. We felt we had to watch our stuff so they didn't steal it. We paid a large amount of money to make our day amazing at Castle Farms, yet we experienced the opposite because of Autumn. She managed to take from us a moment we will now never get to experience. She made us both have a lot of terrible emotions and disappointment on what should have been one of the best days of our lives. On the first day of our honeymoon, instead of feeling such excitement we ended up in tears realizing, that was it. My husband will never get to see me walk the aisle for our wedding and I will forever remember almost being in tears when I came down because he wasn't there. read more
