The Castle Blood purports themselves as "classic American haunts" And that's fine. It's not like most of the haunts I've visited, then again, every haunt has it's own particular twist. They are in a 100 yr old Funeral Parlor that has been converted into the haunt, A new location for them so I'm told. The decor is frankly quite lovely in the half light. The makeup.. is .. overly theatrical, as in, not blended and still.. ok. The costumes, In the past - I've seen pictures, were amazing, I think the newer ones aren't up to the same standard, but they're still lovely and functional, but are lacking what the old ones had. The concept of finding something and interacting with the actors is not new to me, it is similar to what we do at MY haunt, but they way they go about it is indeed a bit different. Often I felt like I was being talked down to. Perhaps it was aged for younger players, however it was fun, interesting - IF it hadn't been for one of the players in our party who'd been there three times previous and wanted to be the center of attention. *eye roll* that gets old really quickly. My favorite scenes of the house would be the Collectors room - the Small man who'd just come back from a journey far away. There was a lot of work put into his room, lots of neat bits and bobs in there. One portrait truly caught my attention. I was told she was still there.. Somewhere. I loved the murderous bride too. She was a lot of fun too. Her puzzle was awful hard. Someone kept standing in my light so I couldn't get the pieces figured out. And I can't forget the bard up front singing to us, He was excellent and charming. He gets major Props. We did get all three things to make it out alive, and we did earn our fangs.

Sure, there aren't many startles or scares throughout the attraction, but that's not the end all be all for Haunted Houses.

We only do the hayride and the actors are amazing they give you a scare and then high five the younger kids some will even take their mask off to show it's all pretend. It's a great introduction to scares and haunts for young children. With that said this year it was very bland. The kids even said it was "lame" and not because they are growing out of it but there were barely any actors there. Last year there were about 7 actors climbing on the hayride at one time. This year there were never more than two with a few sections abandoned all together. No where near as many screams and laughs as years previous. We still paid $25 a person and still waited in over a two hour line. Usually we don't mind at all but they really dropped the ball this year. We even went on a Saturday one of their busiest nights with hundreds of customers. Not sure why it was so barren this year of actors but I feel if that's the case they should drop the price if only for $5. They are a great family and everyone is nice and friendly but this is the first year I feel like I wasted my money. I think next year we will venture elsewhere. It may have just been a fluke on this ONE NIGHT but I dunno. Still a great introduction for young kids

Allen's Haunted Hayrides is right along Route 51. In addition to hayrides, which last about 30 minutes, there is a haunted house, food vendors and other activities. Our group reserved a bonfire, which was $30 for a 2-hour window. You can bring your own food and drinks: we brought supplies for s'mores and some other snacks, but we saw others with hot dogs and other items. Tickets for the hayride or haunted house are $15 each, while a ticket for both is $25. Our hayride driver was hilarious and we really enjoyed our time. A tip: everything is cash and there is no ATM on site.

Since it's over an…read morehour away from Pittsburgh, we planned a weekend getaway to Somerset with two of our friends and came on the last Saturday of the season. We had trouble finding it at first... My gps took us to a barn and said "you have arrived at your destination "... To me, there are few things that are scarier than being lost on a dark country road. I called Huston's and the woman I spoke to was very helpful and gave us the appropriate directions from our location. For $18 a person, it's not a cheap haunted attraction. Although, the house, hayride and corn maze are all included in the price, making it not too bad of a deal. It was super cold when we arrived. So, to warm up I ordered a hot chocolate and my boyfriend got a coffee. It was only $2.25 for both . Unfortunately, you cannot take drinks in to the house, so we kind of had to chug them before going in. The house was awesome- my favorite parts were the clown house where you wore 3D glasses and the walk over the swamp was pretty cool as well. Next, you take a hayride over to a haunted area in the woods. After you walk through there you go back onto the tractor and are taken to a haunted maze. I was disappointed in the maze this year.. It wasn't hard to navigate and there wasn't anyone scaring you in the maze, making it kind of pointless. Our favorite guy of the night was beetle juice! Not sure if he owns the place or what, but he was extremely welcoming when we arrived and asked us how we liked it when we were done with the house, hayride and maze. He was super friendly and his costume was awesome- he even sounded exactly like beetle juice. Overall, it's a great haunted attraction, but not worth it if you are coming from Pittsburgh just for the house and not staying over night. As a weekend getaway, I really enjoyed it and plan to return in the future!

When it was time to exit the hayride, I lost a gemstone ring as I was brushing off hay. The staff pitched in with flashlights and helped search. The hardest part was actually finding your way out, and we did this during the day, I have a hunch that the real fun is at night. They have flashlights for rent, and on top of finding the stamps, I think it gets pretty spooky in there. The kids were loving the haunted hayrides during the daylight though, so they seemed to have found a good balance between frightening and fun. They had little fair games, pumpkins for carving and your typical concessions-the corn sling shot was the best...and we were lucky enough to be there for a zombie flash mob done by what must have been an all ages dance class, very cute. Not a lot for the adults to do/look at while the kids are running around except sit by the fire pit and sip cider, but there are worse things!

We found this course because we were checking out the West Virginia Paranormal Trail and when we arrived it was raining and they were closed but we decided to wait a while outside until they opened and I am SO glad we did. It's $12 per person but you can go through again for only $5 if you want. We probably would have done another round ourselves but time wasn't on our side. They give you a "lore card" and a score card so you get to learn all about the cryptids they feature while you play through and it is just so much fun. My favorites were the Flatwoods Monster and of course the Moth Man but it was cool to learn about some I had never heard of before as well and honestly we were tickled and smiling the whole time we were inside. It is small and does get warm inside and we were lucky that there were only a few other people when we went because they started getting busy as we were leaving and it was pretty cramped. If anything I hope that encourages them to open a larger spot and add even more holes. The owners were lovely too. They were warm and friendly and they had a super eclectic and well curated gift shop at the end of the course. We ended up getting a candle and some snacks but believe me, I wanted everything. I even asked about buying a display stand they were using for merch because it was so adorable and they made a joke about everything having a price. Then, as we were walking out, I saw a mask on the wall that I knew my hubby would love so I walked back and asked if they would sell me that. It turns out they had one in the back that they had had forever and were happy to sell it to me. The price was reasonable too so it was just a cherry on an already incredible experience. I beat my husband by a WHOPPING 11 strokes btw but that tidbit is really just for me. I hope the rest of the review was helpful and entices you to head over and support this fantastic establishment. You won't regret it.

Spooooooky!) but the theming and elaborate props make it a worthwhile experience. The holes are fun, and each one is based on a local or semi-local spooky story. The staff was excellent, and had a wealth of knowledge and information about West Virginia cryptids, and general spookiness and mysteries well beyond what's covered in the course. The gift shop was very impressive -- small, and packed with cool things. We spent more money there than I was intending, but I also wouldn't mind returning to play another round and make a few more purchases. My kids could have also spent hours having their questions answered by the staff. I highly recommend this course
