I had so much fun here with my family. The decorations and atmosphere were spectacular, decked out from top to bottom. Although I wouldn't say it was a haunted house, there were definitely a few times the actors scared me enough to scream! I definitely recommend visiting here, it's 100% worth it. read more

Not what I expected, more of an escape room than a Haunted House. Endless rooms with socially awkward situations into unexpected groups to solve puzzles. Not my cup of tea. You get a false plastic teeth at the end. read more

The Castle Blood purports themselves as "classic American haunts" And that's fine. It's not like most of the haunts I've visited, then again, every haunt has it's own particular twist. They are in a 100 yr old Funeral Parlor that has been converted into the haunt, A new location for them so I'm told. The decor is frankly quite lovely in the half light. The makeup.. is .. overly theatrical, as in, not blended and still.. ok. The costumes, In the past - I've seen pictures, were amazing, I think the newer ones aren't up to the same standard, but they're still lovely and functional, but are lacking what the old ones had. The concept of finding something and interacting with the actors is not new to me, it is similar to what we do at MY haunt, but they way they go about it is indeed a bit different. Often I felt like I was being talked down to. Perhaps it was aged for younger players, however it was fun, interesting - IF it hadn't been for one of the players in our party who'd been there three times previous and wanted to be the center of attention. *eye roll* that gets old really quickly. My favorite scenes of the house would be the Collectors room - the Small man who'd just come back from a journey far away. There was a lot of work put into his room, lots of neat bits and bobs in there. One portrait truly caught my attention. I was told she was still there.. Somewhere. I loved the murderous bride too. She was a lot of fun too. Her puzzle was awful hard. Someone kept standing in my light so I couldn't get the pieces figured out. And I can't forget the bard up front singing to us, He was excellent and charming. He gets major Props. We did get all three things to make it out alive, and we did earn our fangs. read more

Fun haunted house--mostly family friendly; a combination of jump scares mixed with escape room. Why it's 3 stars: 1) It was very long. We arrived around 10:30 and left at 12:45. Most of this was due to some backup in other groups, but because of that we were stuck in a room with a motion-senor cued loud noise for around 10 minutes... 2) In one area, a member of our party--chosen by an employee, *not* volunteered-- was put into a coffin to solve a puzzle. The party member, even after solving the puzzle, was not allowed out of the coffin for a couple minutes; I understand that haunted houses walk the line between phobias and fun scares, but it clearly crossed it here. Overall, a fun experience with a couple of drawbacks that seemed situational. read more

Let me start by saying that I am the ABSOLUTE WORSE person to take to a haunted house. I am more busy seeing how the props are made then caring about a guy yelling at me from behind a drop wall.... But I must say this place held my attention. Well done Castle Blood, well done. It is a super big, old, foreboding funeral home in downtown Monessen. There is a parking lot next to the building but we decided to parked on the street. The tour starts out pretty norm. You get the low down " you don't touch the creatures , the creatures won't touch you" spill. A short "history" of the place. And then off you go into the horrors that the walls hold. It's more like a choose your own adventure then a haunted house. They give you clues and riddles to solve. Small Tokens or as they call them talisman. To help you get ahead and get your fangs. There are jump factors. The spider queen was pretty neat. A few simple magic tricks. The whole place was pretty fantastic. The props where spot on. It takes about 45 minutes to get through the while structure. There are steps and I didn't see any wheelchair accessible places. But that doesn't mean there wasn't any. I kinda wish the characters where a little more into the character they where playing. It seemed like they where bored playing their part. But I won't hold that against them cause I would be bored saying the same thing over and over and over again. I didn't think there needed to be a character in every single room. I would have liked to explore a little more on our own. I think this was a entertaining place. A great place for young teens to adults who don't really like being scared. Not super expensive. There is a gift shop at the end to pick up your Castle Blood shirt. (I did) the story changes every year so next year will be different. And that is a cool idea. no public bathrooms. port a John's outside (I didn't like that.) See you next year Castle Blood! read more

This isn't the type of haunted house that pushes you through with 20 other people like you're cattle - you get to linger in every room and talk to each inhabitant, collecting talisman along the way. The decor is so Victorian macabre and detailed, it's like walking through a movie set; you'll kind of wish you lived there, but the denizens will make you be glad you DON'T - they take their roles seriously and provide effective scares without resorting to chainsaws. Even standing in line is entertaining! Not your typical barfing animatronic and screaming teenager haunt - this one's got character and heart. I've made Castle Blood an October must-visit since the 90s, and now my 6-year-old son is a fan too! read more

This is seriously one of the best interactive and story driven haunts that I've had the pleasure to attend in the past 20 years working in and around the Haunted Attraction industry. This is what happens if the Addams Family opened their home for tours...it's deliciously devious and a quick wit will serve you well indeed. That said, this is not your typical "in your face/gory" haunted house. As many have pointed out, this is an experience that's borderline interactive theater. Sure, there aren't many startles or scares throughout the attraction, but that's not the end all be all for Haunted Houses. Every show is different and if you can just let go and let yourself be immersed in the experience presented, you'll have a great time here! If you're looking for fun trip into the macabre world they've created and truly entertaining Halloween experience, then this may be exactly the right kind of thing for you. It is not for everyone and if you're stuck on the idea that haunted houses have to all be "scream machines" then you're missing out on this truly great experience. read more

The people were really nice so I feel bad that I hated it. It was insanely lame. And $20 and a 45 min drive for a house made for 5 year olds was a bummer. Just go to Demon House 10 min away from Castle Blood.. We were really excited to try something new. Cool idea to solve puzzles while going through a haunted house. Good concept, horrid execution. Problems: 1. We were a group of 5 and for some reason they decided to group us with 3 other strangers. We thought it was normal but the strangers were weird as hell and in EVERY single room, the actors were shocked that we were 8 people making it clear that was too many. And it WAS too many. We had so many We couldn't all participate in the "puzzles" and the other people were obnoxious and made our time even worse. Not castle bloods fault that the people sucked but it's their fault for making our group too large. The rooms are small, 5 should be a good amount alone. 2. The puzzles were to be solved by a 5 year old. Match this color to this color, and the like. Not every room had a puzzle, some were just some lame ass 3rd grade magic trick. Literally 1 trick then ok on to the next sad room. 3. No one tried to scare us most of the trip through. We got jump scared 1 time. Most of our trip was just walking in silence. 4. two in our group were there before and said there were rooms missing. so I guess it could have been longer, but maybe that's due to lack of employees from Rona or something. 5. The concept itself was "labyrinth" and the theme and things they were talking about made no sense. It was just like "we all die some day...oooh spooky" so dumb. 6. The actors seemed like cool people and most tried to make it as fun as they could with this lame ass house and material they were given. The guy out front by the lines, the guy that first greets you, and the guy in the cemetery area were the best part of the trip for sure. Not that the others were bad but they were just giving us their puzzle or magic trick and they couldn't really make it cool I guess. I don't want to blame the actors. 7.its a historical building supposedly haunted with no emphasis on that cool fact. it's just a background bit of info that has no barring on the attraction. Honestly touring it as it originally was (or close to) would have been far more interesting. If you go, go with kids because that's who will enjoy it. I think it would be great for them and the puzzles will be cute. Advertising this to adults is just highway robbery, you know this isn't for us. So, don't waste our money and time. If I had known it was lame, I would have brought my son and given it 5 stars for sure. read more

I literally just got home from my first visit to Castle Blood. I went with my 12 year old daughter and a friend of mine (both of us are in our 30s). Every year we try to hit all the "local" haunts. This is our fourth one for the year, and by far the best yet! Sadly we missed what was going on outdoors due to our late arrival, but still got let in even though it was 11pm. We ended up being the last group to go through and I was apprehensive since often that means the actors are tired and just want to get things over with. To my delight, this was NOT the case with CB. From the ticket seller to those in the gift shop, everyone remained in character and in top form. The ticket seller took the time to explain the Nightmare Pass (which we bought), the roaming minstrel took the time to play our small group a very creative song (seriously, how many songs use the word exsanguinate?), and our guide (sebastian i believe?) was wonderful and quite the helping hand The entire set was superbly done with top notch decorations, props, etc. Unlike many other haunts, we actually got to look at the various features in the rooms as well as interact with the costumed characters, not just have them scream at us like many many other places. Even better was that the storyline followed though from beginning to end, not simply changing for each room. No, CB does not have the blood and gore of other haunts. They do not have chainsaw wielding clowns. What they do have is a truly unique experience that is fun for all ages. read more

We came to Castle Blood this Halloween season for the first time. The website is pretty clear on telling you what to expect so we knew it wasn't going to be the "typical" haunted house. I'm super into that, because in all my years of going to haunted houses, there's nothing that annoys me more than the overuse of strobe lighting and chainsaws. To me that's not scary, it's annoying. So I really appreciate the haunt because while it has some of the jump scare elements of a traditional haunted house, it's also something very unique. You get to interact with the actors, and your environment. Almost like a choose your own adventure, but in a Halloween setting. Not only that it's just super fun to walk through all the different sets and see how much craftsmanship and love they really put into it. Say what you want about it not being adrenaline scary, but it's extremely fun! It's also pretty cool that it's a possibly haunted place. That lends a cool element to the atmosphere. Oh and also it's got one of the lower price points around Pittsburgh which is fantastic, because I think you get a lot more bang for your buck here than you do at some of the other places. It takes a good little while to walk through this one, whereas other places are kind of 'wham bam, thank you ma'am' and you just spent a whole bunch of money. (There's a time and a place for that am I right? I kid, I kid) Anyway, to each their own, but I highly recommend it (it's great if you have kids around 11 and up even for the night time show). read more

DO NOT GO IF YOU'RE OVER THE AGE OF 12. Seriously. This was one of the biggest waste of times of my life. I went because I was given tickets through Living Social for my birthday. Immediately we were turned off because the person who bought me the tickets wasn't with me and they weren't going to allow us in. After explaining to the woman how they were a birthday gift, she reluctantly let us in. After getting in line, it took us well over an hour to get in. Mind you, the line wasn't long at all. The next huge turn off was the lack of respect and customer service by the staff. A few kids were leaning on the railing and a man (dressed in costume) kept yelling at the kids in a rude manner rather than just asking them to perhaps lean against the wall. It may sound silly, but that's no way to treat a customer. Before we even went in we should have known how bad it was just by the general reaction of people coming out saying how boring and non-scary it was. Now to the haunted house... This is not a haunted house. The best way I can describe it is an interactive game. A tour guide takes you into each room to help you solve a crime or something of the matter (I lost interest which is why I can't remember what was going on). There is maybe one or two people that jump out at you, no blood or gore and definitely not any type of scaring going on. The scenery was nothing to brag about either. Half it looked like it wasn't even done. And the actors... I'm sure they're just volunteers and doing it for fun, so I won't bother to comment. This is definitely a place to go with young kids who aren't yet old enough to visit a real haunted house. Not sure what other people are raving about on here, but my guess is they probably work for Castle Blood and are trying to create positive buzz. read more

My husband and I have been visiting the castle for ten years. Every year we look forward to being part of a story. Other haunted attractions bore us. It's always the same thing. Practically having to run through a place, while people are screaming. When we go to the castle, we get to take our time and really enjoy everything. We get to participate in a play. When it's all over, we wish it wasn't! The castle is spooky and entertaining. We really feel like we are home! read more

Always a good show. This is not your typical haunted house. This is more theatrical and you have to solve some simple puzzles and collect talismans in order to get your vampire fangs at the end. This is an amazing attraction. The makeup on the actors is beautifully done. It's got some jump scares but overall is more of an interactive theatrical experience. I took my younger cousin there this evening and we had an awesome time. It takes about 40 minutes to and hour to get through. The line wasn't terribly long and moved at a decent pace. They have actors that walk through the line and keep you entertained. They price of admission is more than reasonable. They offer VIP packages to reserve a time as well but we opted to wait in line to have the full experience. I highly suggest attending Castle Blood this fall season. I believe they have Christmas and St. Patrick's Day entertainment as well but I have yet to attend either of these events. We plan to do so this year and in March. Castle Blood has changed locations several times, I've attended each venue. This is by far my favorite house! read more

Castle Blood is a waste of time and money! My date and I commented several times to each other regarding the boring environment in line outside. No spooky music, no actors milling about, nothing to get you in the mood while you stand in line in a parking lot. We were grouped with a family of four to enter Castle Blood together as "new visitors". I don't know anyone what would visit a second time! We were given instructions to pay close attention to what the actors said. Basically, you're told there are three "talisman" that you have to acquire by interacting with the actors and trading items along the way. If you can't remember three things that start with the same letter as you're guided through this converted office building, then I guess it might be a little scary. They noted that the actors may heckle you. This might have been amusing, but there were two small children in our group. The boys, approximately 8 and 10 years old, didn't seem to understand it, but they did seem a tiny bit scared once or twice. The décor is decent, but the acting and story line are weak. If you are lucky, someone will startle you once by popping out of a wall. If you "survive" Castle Blood and find your three items, you'll receive a set of plastic vampire teeth. read more

Castle Blood is an absolute delight. I went in cold having no idea what I was about to experience. The thought and design that goes in to this show is so classic and brave. When most dark attractions are relying on gore or shock to attract visitors, Castle Blood goes for old school story telling which is such a lost art. I loved the uniform look of the make up and costumes. The detail of the sets was outstanding and how quickly each scenario forced strangers to work as a unit was great fun and refreshing. Castle Blood calls them selves "Classic American Halloween" and I agree. There is a romantic aspect to this Halloween experience I find in few attractions. Rich, detailed story lines and engaging, well played actors kept the pace going beautifully and before we knew it, our group of previously unknown patrons became a working unit. This is not your typical Halloween experience. It is smart, challenging, theatrical and one of the most unique story telling experiences I have ever visited. Can't wait to go back again! read more

I don't usually do reviews but I have to on "Castle Blood" in Monessen, Pa. We went last evening to see it for the first time. I have to say it was "amazing". The theme of the "haunt" was fantastic and there was a lot of interaction between the guests and the actors. It really was surreal. Everyone in our group had an amazing time and we definitely will return. We have already told a lot of friends and family that it is a must that they go visit you. They will not be sorry that's for sure. We were made to feel special. It was cool figuring out clues and making it to the end. We received "vampire" fangs at the end as we solved everything we were supposed to. All I can say if you have never been there you are in for a treat!!!! One word of caution, Look out for the werewolf!!!!!!!!!!!! read more

Waste of money! The people working laugh at you, give away some of the clues, and a couple were a little rude. There are only a handful of rooms you go to for gathering clues. One is a fortune teller of sorts who ask you to guess a number she is thinking about and then she just tells you the number.... One room there is a grave digger and he adds nothing to the puzzle. There is a very half hearted attempt to scare people with a couple noises and a couple windows opening and people screaming. The whole experience was confusing, they say it's a puzzle, but give you some of the answers, then they fail to scare you. In one room we were laughing a little and told we were rude and told our group basically to leave the room (not giving us the required piece of the puzzle to finish). Next we were pretty much told to exit. We end up in a gift shop where I couldn't imagine anybody buying anything after the boring stories, badly delivered lines, and irritating experience. The only nice thing about the place was the decoration. read more

Castle Blood was...interesting. Last year was my friends and I first time attending and we did go again this year because we got free tickets. However, we didnt and still do not like it and will likely never go back. It is true that this is not a scare the hell out of you, gory, crazy haunted house. It is an interactive experience mixed with theater. The lines are typically very long and quite a boring wait, no type of vibe outside aside from food and pay booth. I understand and can appreciate where they were going with this, but to my group and I it doesnt work. The story line is very weak and I was left throughout the entire time thinking how "stupid" it was. With that being said it is to note the set/scenery are done well and the actors makeup's are quite superb. I'm a little bias towards this haunt as I love the dark and bloody scarefest's and a good scare, but I did both times go into this with an open and mind and willing to "play along". This just doesnt seem to hit home with many people, especially the groups we were stuck with. It is a long wait, poor story, and not scary at all. We may have jumped twice but not much else.. most of the scares came from drop doors/windows and just people screaming their heads off, not scary. Haunted houses need to do more than that these days and better angles and attention grabbers which this place lacks. If in the area I can recommend The Scare House and Demon House, and on a Friday or Saturday Hundred Acres Manor (not on Thursdays/Sundays as there are legit 10 actors for 25$). Take what you will from this, I think it is worth one visit to "experience" something different and check it out, but I assure you that you wont be scared and probably want your money back. read more
