Castaway Park is tucked inside Newport Harbor. It's really more of walking trail than park. Nicely paved paths with a fence throughout so it's safe for kids and pets to roam freely. Although there aren't many spots for shade, I'd recommend lathering up on sunblock and bringing a hat for those warmer days. From this spot, you can clearly see an expansive view of Newport. East Coast Highway, Bay Island and lots of kayakers can be spotted making their way through the channels. For a total route of 1.5 miles, start at the Goodwill Donation parking lot, follow the path along the neighborhood, until you reach the intersection at Dover and Westcliff Dr. If you're looking to take a break, crossover to Westcliff and visit the cafes for a cup of coffee and a bite to eat. Once finished it's a straight path back to the parking lot!

One of my favorite places to walk! I usually go in the evening for the sunset and city light views. It's pretty safe walking at night. The walk itself is easy so you can walk your dogs, catch up with a friend, or take pictures also. Parking is easy to find and there is a nearby public restroom at the park across the street.

This is a great little area for walking on paved paths. Parking is easy if you google castaways park parking and restrooms are convenient as they are across the street. There is a very small incline to get to the park but once you're there, everything is flat. If you turn right, you get a great view of the back bay. There is a memorial and a few park benches if you want to sit and enjoy the view. Otherwise, if you want to be a little more active, you can take the path all the way into the residential area. There's no shade along the path so don't forget your sunscreen and hat on the hot days.

This is the location for the Field Of Honor held on Memorial Days. The site is setup beautifully and lovely to go for a walk amidst the fog lined pathway that leads to the Memorial monument. The actual park is great too for the kids to play. Sand out, soft flooring. Bucket swings. One large red and blue play structure with a canopy for shade. And a musical hut with drums and musical notes.

A definite 3.5 to 3.75 score. Mostly for walkers, joggers, and runners, and possibly for a few novice bikers. The main area is the park, which includes a war memorial. The upper and lower parks are the same, just parking preference. The memorial is located on either side. There is also a bike path that runs north along the bay . The total path is around 2.5 miles to around 3.5, with intermittent rest benches and wilderness trails. Great scenic pics can be taken, and the area has an appreciation for nature. It's a simple park, for walks and picnics and, of course, a salute to our armed forces.

I take my dog walking here all the time! It's a perfect 20-30 minute stroll and has amazing views of the Newport Bay. There is a free parking lot at the entrance, and convenient poop bags, trash cans and water fountains for us dog owners. There are a series of short, interconnecting paved trails that can be used to walk, run or bike. I highly recommend watching the sun rise here on a clear day - it's magical!

Randomly came by today to hike around this park, saw some nice views, and visited the soldier memorial & flag area. Panorama views of the back bay in Newport Beach along with lots of paddle boarders. A couple benches to Sit & relax, dogs allowed on paved paths.

Great local "park" but don't expect it to be like a standard, traditional park... 'More of an area with trails/walking paths than a park. However in all fairness, by Merriam-Webster's Definition: Park - http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/park (Castaways Park qualifies.) 'Was in the area and was initially going to check out the Bob Henry Park just across the street... 'But I noticed a sign on the right, "Castaways Park." So, a quick course adjustment, a right turn into the wrong parking lot, an illegal U-turn and we were @ Castaways Park. HAPA Boy & I walked up the main entrance path & followed it to the left. Open, airy, sits behind a row of beautiful Newport homes that over look the Lower Bay & Harbor. Great view! Photo - http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/castaways-park-newport-beach?select=3A5jd1P_FEg7JmFKHL1DCw#L1zziJoYjr6AZZhnmsDR2A I ran into an older local lady, walking her Golden Retriever, who she called "Henry." (Of all things, named after the Bob Henry Park just next door.) I took HAPA Boy off-leash for a brief moment in which Henry & him had a chance to say hello... 'And as usual, HAPA always wants to play. HAPA Boy & Henry - http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/castaways-park-newport-beach?select=3A5jd1P_FEg7JmFKHL1DCw#W83lHWpTqDpUtg8JB5MXTg The few people that we met on our visit were very friendly & personable. However, there were a few that were not so friendly. (It's Newport Beach, it's kinda expected.) The paths are shared by bikers, dog-walkers, joggers & just about anyone who enjoys a great view, fresh air and a nice walk - "Share the Path." I was told by the very nice, elderly lady that the cyclists can be "snobby." (Like I mentioned, Newport Beach... 'AND she was a local!) 8P There's a nice USMC Memorial: Photo - http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/castaways-park-newport-beach?select=3A5jd1P_FEg7JmFKHL1DCw#uVqP5yxIa_zLGIbgViMBaw Did I mention great view? Photo - http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/castaways-park-newport-beach?select=3A5jd1P_FEg7JmFKHL1DCw#6OhOjLht0v9XRzpwRIj-ag There is also a sitting area w/a couple of benches as well so that you can sit, relax & take in the view. Photo - http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/castaways-park-newport-beach?select=3A5jd1P_FEg7JmFKHL1DCw#1_p-4Nn7T8OVl7m50-CL4Q 'Another nice South OC "Park" - 'Great for a morning/evening walk & according to the lady I met this morning, approximately 1.3 miles all around. HAPA & I didn't have too much time to play/explore but will have to return at a later date to make the full walk. (HAPA & I have returned one time since starting this yelp*view but still have yet to make the full trip all around.) Overall, nice location! However, I think it would be better named as "Castaways Trail" since it mostly consists of walkways & paths. As Gertrude Stein is forever being quoted, "Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose." So, I say, "Park, sh'mark, sn'ark... It's still a guh'roovie place." - Big Aloha Food: n/a Ambiance: 5 Service: 5 Value: 5

One of the best views in Orange County! It's so peaceful and beautiful that I would come here every weekend if I could. Get some coffee from Kean Coffee or a donut from Sidecar Donuts and go for a stroll here.

The weather was perfect the entire time we were there. It was really nice to get away from the heat. The beach and the water was clean. The waves were a bit high which was perfect for boogie boarding for the kids and some of us adults. (I am totally sore from boogie boarding and maybe broke something... but totally worth jt!) There was a bit of traffic around the beach area when we first arrived in the morning (9 am). Some streets were small so you have to be extra careful driving because pedestrians darted into the street whenever they wanted to... We were able to find parking in the parking lot and we got charged around 32 for the entire day. 6 hours was the max before having to add more money to our parking pass but easily done by using our phone, just remember your car license plate number and zone number. The area was very nice and got front row on the sand. We had 16 people in our group, we all got to have our space. But as people started coming they started crowing around so it was tent to tent next to each other around noon. So make sure you get there early if you want a nice view. There was a bathroom close by with washing stations and even swings and playground for the kids to enjoy. We were able to take a short walk (5-7 minutes toward the fun zone and ferry area). We left our stuff on the beach for a few hours and it everything was still there when we returned. We just love Newport and wish we weren't four hours away but we do not mind the drive. It truly is relaxing when we get there. We spent about 12 hours on the beach and enjoyed every moment. Can't wait to go back!

I feel a little bit bad not giving this beautiful park five stars, but I'll make my reasons clear…read morebelow. Still, compared to most parks of this size in the US, this is probably a five-star park. And yet. Wow. I just can't believe Newport Beach had the foresight and wisdom to allow this little plot of prime real estate to be a wonderful park for the entire community to use rather than some multimillionaire's hillside estate. When I came and took my photos, I only explored the southern side of the park, which is separated from the northern side by a steeper part of the hill and some shrubbery. It's easy enough to get from one side of the park to the other, but from the bottom, where I started, I couldn't tell there was another half of the park. Most of the southern side is on a hillside that steepens as you walk away from Carnation Avenue. In addition to small grass areas, there are a playground, some picnic tables, and only a few shade trees. Those trees are important, though, because when the weather is beautiful and there's not a cloud in the sky like when I came in August, you probably don't want to be totally exposed. I had walked here from where I parked about three-quarters-of-a-mile away. When I drove back, I noticed on my GPS that the park continued, so I turned left onto 1st Avenue, and who knew? Begonia Park is actually named after Begonia Avenue, which is its northern/western border. This northern part of the park comprises a much larger, flatter grassy area. However, the only trees up here are at the very eastern corner of the park, so again, if you're picnicking on the grass up here, bring something to shade yourself with. At the westernmost corner of the walkable part of the upper park, there are two benches that face the ocean. There was a man sitting at one, so I didn't get out of my car to try the benches, but I could tell that they have a lovely ocean view. These benches are definitely five stars. My quibbles with Begonia Park may be minor, but if the City of Newport Beach fixed them, I'd gladly re-review and bring this rating up to five stars. The first problem is a big one. Despite Bayside Drive being a fairly busy street and despite the fact that two separate concrete walkways go right up to Carnation Avenue right across from Begonia Park's own concrete path to the playground, there are no marked crosswalks at or near the corner of Bayside & Carnation. This just feels like feckless indifference on the part of city planners. In addition to crosswalks, there should be those blinking yellow lights that flash when people are in the crosswalks. The top half of the park has a lovely view, and I like all the open space, but there should be more shade trees and especially benches all around the edges of the park, not just right where the best view is.

Bit challenging to "hold it" if you're having a leisurely picnic, curled up with a good book, or catching up with a friend. Sometimes you just don't want to get up and leave the moment.
