Solo dinner, €98 tasting menu, one of the best bistro meals I've had in Paris…read more This kitchen makes simple things incredible. Mushroom mousse with cacao -- sounds weird, totally works. Great octopus. Then the surprise of the night: bolognese with carrots, and it was amazing -- deep slow-cooked sauce against sweet carrots. Salmon with tomatoes cutting the fat, then veal sweetbreads with mash that's basically butter. No complaints. The riz au lait -- I'd heard the hype for years and it still blew me away. One of the best desserts I've ever had, period. Worth coming for this alone. Wine list is small but sharp -- all French, small growers, glasses from €9. The Roussette de Savoie from Dupasquier (€11) was the discovery of the night: mineral, sharp, alpine. Then a Savigny-lès-Beaune with the bolognese -- perfect match. €133 all-in. In New York this would cost double. Loud, tight, zero pretension -- exactly what a Paris bistro should be.

Contrary to some of the other reviews, we were not surrounded by American tourists. Lots of French speaking diners with a few people from the UK and America. The restaurant is quite cozy with a large communal table in the center of the restaurant and tables close to each other on the sides. You will become friends with those around you because you are thatclose. There is also counter/high-top seating outside. Since it's a small dining room, you also get a view of the Chef and his team in action. We started with the roasted octopus and for les plats my mom had the roasted veal sweetbread and I had the duck breast. The duck was cooked to perfection - tender and flavorful with a hint of smokiness. The sweetbread was delicious! It was crispy on the outside but the inside was tender. A side of purée de pommes de terre comes with each dish. For dessert, I opted to satisfy my chocolate craving with the chocolat blanc et noir (white and dark chocolate mousse). My mom wanted fruit so she had the cremeux de citron, fraise ananas et passion. Our server was great as was the entire team. Definitely make a reservation as it fills up quickly, This is definitely on my list of places to return to on my next visit to Paris.

While traveling through Paris, believe it or not I was beginning to really crave a salad, as I was…read morea bit on overload with bread each meal. I happened across this place near my hotel and noticed a large salad being served in a silver bowl and decided to give it a try. When we got there it was about 9 pm on a Monday but the place was still packed. There was only one guy serving/cleaning the tables, and one female blonde bartender helping to serve as well. We were seated quickly (by European standards) and ordered the salads. My other half had one with prosciutto, fried egg and cancel cheese, while I went for the pork belly. Both salads were very savoury, and not a typical North American salad. In addition to the toppings, there was no croutons but in lieu of this there was fried potato medallions. Overall very tasty and recommended. On top of this, both the server and bartender were kind enough to apologize for the wait (first time in Paris!!) And the bartender was nice enough to give us two beers on the house (St Omer) - Very tasty bonus!

When the waiter noticed our confusion asked if we wanted the menu in English. We agreed so menus were changed. We ordered the cote de boeuf (steak) for two and I had an order of escargots (snails). The snails were cooked in butter and garlic sauce. They were tender and garlicky. I used the bread to soak up the sauce. The steak for two was huge! It also came with a salad and potatoes. For 54 euros it was a bargain. It was not the most tender cut of meat and some parts really gave your mouth a workout but there was a lot of food and it was filling.

Friday lunch was an absolute beauty…read more The food? Fantastic. The wait times? Let's just say we're in Paris, not a Formula 1 pit lane. We'll leave it at that. We headed to Chez Janou, a Paris institution. I hadn't been in years, but my son insisted we go back because, according to him, they have the best chocolate mousse in Paris. Judging by the lineup, half the city; and every tourist with an Instagram account showed up. Thankfully we had a 2pm reso. Here's the thing, though. Everyone talks about the mousse, but the food deserves just as much attention. I'd also forgotten how much I love the 3rd arrondissement. Wander a few minutes from the restaurant and you'll find beautiful art galleries, a gorgeous little park, and some of the best boutique shopping in Paris. It's one of those neighbourhoods where you accidentally walk 15,000 steps without realizing it. Now, here's your game plan. Start with the escargots or the gambas to share. For your main, order the farci provençal or the foie de veau. The farci is like a French version of a stuffed pepper: yummy comfort food with a southern coast twist. As for the foie de veau... I actually ordered it by mistake. I thought I was getting regular veal. Out came veal liver. Best mistake of the day. I love liver. My mom makes an incredible liver and onions, so I'm a tough judge. This was outstanding. Rich, buttery, perfectly cooked and perfectly salted. It was so good I immediately texted my mom and told her she's coming here the next time she's in Paris. Drum roll, please... The chocolate mousse. Was it worth all the hype? Yep. There are no fancy swirls or little artistic desserts here. A server simply walks over carrying what looks like a white industrial-sized bowl of chocolate mousse and casually drops a mountain of it onto your plate. Everyone grabs a spoon and starts digging in. It's wonderfully French. Simple. Unpretentious. Ridiculously good. So yes, Chez Janou lives up to the hype. But don't just come for the mousse. Come for the lunch, stay for the neighbourhood, and spend the afternoon getting happily lost in one of the best corners of Paris. That's a Friday well spent.
