I interviewed a few masonry companies for repairing spalling brick in my basement. Some wanted to…read moreparge the walls, which was not what I wanted. Some quoted me fairly high prices for the repair, but Martin Forde offered me the best, and most reasonable cost for the job. During our interview Martin struck me as a competent, and fair mason and he is responsive by email, which are valuable traits in a contractor. We scheduled the job, and he and his team showed up right on time. The first thing I learned is that Forde masonry may not have a full time staff. Martin definitely came out to my job periodically to deliver materials, but the masons who did the work were actually two latinos who seemed to be day laborers. They were competent, and very polite as I asked questions in my broken Spanish, but that makes accountability a little more difficult. That became a problem when I was in the basement with another contractor, and I saw one of the mason repairing a hole that was two withes thick. He was just repairing the outward face that I could see, but leaving a whole in the second layer. I asked him about it, so he dropped some mortar into the hole, a few bricks, and kept on with his repair. Yes, it visually looks fine and I would not have noticed if I were not watching as the hole was getting closed up, but that is not what I expect when I hire a professional mason to repair my walls. My job is done though, and I hopefully will not need masonry help for a while. Most of the issues I had are easily fixed with a little more attention to detail, and oversight, so I would encourage others to give Martin a chance if you need masonry help.

When I called the company to complain, the manager (Chris) basically told me to pound sand and said he was going to tell his guys to walk off the job. There are so many companies that can do this work well, so I would think twice before using these guys.

The product was defective, and despite repeated attempts to contact them, we've been met with silence. No response. No resolution. No accountability. A company that refuses to stand by its product and completely ignores its customers is unacceptable. We gave them more than enough time and opportunity to correct the issue, but it's clear they have no intention of honoring their warranty or doing the right thing. I wouldn't recommend this company to anyone. Be cautious--once they have your money, you might be on your own. --- P.S. We are now blocked from calling their business. We have never been rude, just simply asked for them to do the right thing.

Chris did a fine job redoing a brick walkway that was mired by dips, broken curbing and an…read moreunsecured border. I would not have believed what a difference it made! All the bricks were pulled up and the highest standards used to reset and set brick. A cement curbing under the brick not only secured brick but provided a means for directing run off water. The brick was also power washed. (Unfortunately, other remodeling elsewhere created dust and dirt on brick afterwards but that will be hosed off.)

Only discovered it when I had a fire and saw smoke coming from outside the fireplace. When a different contractor took out the fireplace, the beams in the walls were scotched and blackened. It's a wooden house, and I had my whole family inside the house that night. They always cemented the chimney cap to the top of the chimney so it could be cleaned.

Timeline of events: Sent an email to Ben with pictures and a description of the problem on a Friday at 3:12 PM. He called me at 5:15 PM that evening asking if he could visit to see the job and offer me an estimate, he came by at 5:44 PM, and after reviewing and carefully describing the work needed to repair, he offered his proposal which I accepted. AND the VERY NEXT DAY, a SATURDAY mind you, he and his son arrived at 8:00 AM and the job was completed by 3:00 PM. So literally WITHIN 24 HOURS Ben The Mason had responded to my request, came by to see the job, offered a quote, and did the repairs. The entire experience exceeded my expectations, and I am very impressed with the service and craftsmanship provided by Ben The Mason. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Next up, we have to discuss price. I've done only a handful of projects, so this is hard for me to judge. But, when I see the work and look at the amount of hours he puts in and the quality of the work, it seems extremely fair and I'm guess extremely competitive. If you think a price is too high, discuss it with him. He and you can work something out...or not. I've worked with him three times and will do so again. That leaves quality as next factor. No one is better. He built a patio from huge pavers that have not moved, shifted, cracked, or drained poorly. We get numerous positive comments. Ben is a polite, clean, professional man that gets to it. I do not believe you will find anyone around who is as fast, affordable, and adept. His sons are great too.

I'm writing this review several years mater because the freeze thaw cycle has shifted around all the patio and driveway installed by my builder, but the work CR Masonry did for me has remained perfectly level four seasons later. (see my review on 8/31/2020 for patio work he did at our previous home) Chris and his wife did most of the work, except one day when he brought another person to help. His finished the job within the timeframe we had given him, and the cost was reasonable. The job included: (1) replacing old pavers with new ones on two of our alleyways on two sides of our house, (2) fixing some large square pavers in an elevated portion of our backyard that a tree's roots had pushed up over the years, (3) constructing a white fence gate that matches our neighbors, (4) taking out old rotting wood fencing from one of our side alleys and constructing a new fence with pressure-treated wood, (5) constructing a gated enclosure / extension of our fenced alley to store trash bins and bicycles of our tenants, and (6) constructing two wooden planters in one of our side alleys next to our house for our herb garden. I am attaching a few pictures - that should speak for themselves. Chris did an excellent job, and I wouldn't hesitate recommending him strongly, and would certainly use him in the future.

Jonathan and his team did an excellent job transforming our wraparound driveway into a backyard…read morepatio space. It was not a straightforward job as the driveway was on a downward slope and needed to be leveled out pretty significantly. Jonathan and his team also put in fencing to surround the patio and cleared out some space (old stumps, lots of weeds) to make room. They got the job done on time and on budget, and Jonathan was highly communicative throughout the process. We could not be happier with the result. The attention to detail was very impressive, the process was smooth and the patio / fencing looks fantastic. Would highly recommend. 5 stars without a doubt.
