I wanted to get bio-identical hormones for menopause because I was suffering from horrible insomnia and anxiety that had set in during the transition from peri-menopause to menopause proper. I had tried at Kaiser but they will only do that under special circumstances that I didn't qualify for. She was extremely knowledgeable about the connection between the hormone changes of menopause and peri-menopause and insomnia and anxiety. She had me do extensive (but all at once so therefore not burdensome) testing for my levels of all potentially related things to determine the best doses of hormones for me specifically and make sure my overall health was good. I had been told by Kaiser that it was not possible to determine my exact levels of hormones yet the tests she called for did just that and went through a medical facility that was excellent. And throughout she was empathic and understanding so I felt comfortable telling her I'd been through a recent trauma that may have been exacerbating some of the symptoms and she then talked to me about the changes in the daily timing of the release of cortisol in the body from PTSD that none of my prior MD specialists had ever mentioned and included some further tests and natural treatment for this as well. Her non-judgemental attitude and understanding did not change when I shared this as it sadly often does if you mention anything mental health related to a practitioner and that she would be so knowledgeable about something that wasn't even an advertised specialty of hers made me feel that she keeps herself so up to date on the latest information and treatment with a very wide net because of her integrated perspective and clear commitment to best practices so that you could bring her just about any issue and she would have helpful treatment suggestions for you. She saw me often enough to get the correct course of treatment and then once I was stabilized with consistently good sleep and lowered anxiety did not need extensive follow up visits so I got proper care without unnecessary expense. She is a gem that I would recommend to anyone.

I saw Dr. Teray when she was still at Berkley Naturopathic Medical group. she was quite helpful…read more i had to come to here after a severe viral in early 2014 and she was one of a few doctors I had been seeing. She spent the first part of the session hearing me out and listening to everything I had to say, doing her best to get a whole picture of who I was. She then prescribed some supplements and vitamins. While some of what she prescribed got push back from the other doctors, I can say I felt measurably better within a day or two of seeing her. Even some of the supplements other doctors warned me against still had a measurably positive side effect, and for that I was grateful. Keep in mind, it wasn't an overnight cure. Both Dr. Teray and the other doctors said it would be at least six months before I would begin to feel normal again. She did however help measurably and for that I am very thankful.

Dr. Teray's office, to me, is the definition of a safe space. I've dealt with issues of depression…read moreand anxiety for as far back as I can remember. I've been on medication, I've seen general practitioners, I've seen my fair share of psychiatrists and therapists, I've read plenty of self-help books--you get the idea. But these things never worked out for me. A couple years ago, seemingly by magic, I was in a great place, had things under control, and was very happy with my life. And for some reason, that stopped, and I was no longer happy, and I couldn't for the life of me figure out what I was doing differently. Things started to get really bad, and my life felt like it was falling apart--my job and my relationship began to suffer because of this and I knew I had to do something. I decided to give Berkeley Naturopathic Medical Group a call, without a specific doctor in mind. When I told the receptionist that I was looking for help with anxiety and depression, she stopped me mid-sentence and said "You should see Dr. Teray. She's amazing. She just left our group to start her own practice. Here is her contact information." Dr. Teray and I started with a phone consultation, where she asked me some questions about my goals and so forth, what I was looking for and why it was important to me, to see if we would even be a good fit. I liked this, because the truth is that N.D. care can be expensive, and I appreciated the opportunity to feel out the connection before making a commitment. I was really struck by the way she worded some of her questions--for example, "Why is being happy important to you?"--which really required me to think about my answers. I decided to sign up with her for 12 sessions, which we completed over about 8 months. The original idea was 6 months--a session every other week--but as we neared the end we decided to push some appointments out based on my progress. It's amazing to me to think back on where I was when I started with her, and how far I've come with her help. We did a blood panel and she prescribed me some supplements and vitamins which I still take today. I cannot believe how much they help me. Our sessions felt similar to therapy, but more proactive, and with a more holistic approach to mind, body, and spiritual well being. I am so, so, so grateful to Dr. Teray for helping me remember how to be happy again. I definitely benefited from all 12 sessions. I wasn't expecting an overnight miracle cure; these are issues I've battled for well over a decade, and they needed to be handled with tact and some delicacy. Dr. Teray did just that. She did not expect me to upturn my life and make immediate radical changes; our pace was perfect, gave me time to incorporate and practice new strategies into my day-to-day, and I now feel well equipped to handle what comes my way. And, if it happens that I find myself needing a little extra help, I know exactly who I'll call.

Update to my original review:…read more I was hoping to update my original review to add a positive twist. While I'm apologetically correcting how she referred to herself (see below), I can only add that Carolyn seems now to be practicing the fine art of "CYA". Backpedaling and claiming innocence. She has reached out to me via voicemail with a request to discuss supplement policy - NOT her profit making off of them. (GREED?) Overall, with her dismissive attitude, defensiveness regarding supplement profits, TREMENDOUS PUSHINESS to purchase supplements from her preferred provider (which would increase her bank account + lack of transparency) and questioning her associate's decisions in my presence, I would still 100%, encourage others to seek holistic healthcare elsewhere. ORIGINAL: I've read off a lot of great reviews regarding Carolyn's chiropractic care. But this is not that. Carolyn is a true business woman first; a functional medicine doctor on the side. Her bedside manner could use a good dose of polishing. She needs to keep in mind who is working for who and keep her ego in check. I sought a functional medicine doctor to address my gut and stress issues stemming from decades-old C-PTSD. From the moment we met, Carolyn went to work on treating these conditions. She provided me with supplement treatment and valuable suggestions, which I followed and began feeling better. Carolyn didn't stop there. She immediately showed interest in replacing specialists I've been working with for years, which was a red flag. I hadn't made these requests, and her interest was unnerving and aggressive. I told her not interested on a couple points yet she continued to push her agenda and added more unnecessary supplements to my treatment plan. Carolyn's website states an option to purchase supplements from other sources than those she prefers. That was appealing to me. What she does not disclose is that she receives a profit off her clients when they make purchases from her preferred supplement provider. Upon learning that Carolyn's preferred supplement provider allows practitioners to set their own price to charge clients, I questioned her about what percentage, if any, she profits. Her response, a DEFENSIVE; "I am not legally or ethically (clearly, MORALS don't count) required to provide a separate written disclosure regarding practitioner margins on supplements or lab tests. Because supplement purchases are optional and not tied to care, a commission disclosure is not mandated." Yet her website states: "Supplements prescribed by our practitioners as part of a personalized treatment plan are considered medical necessities." SO WHICH IS IT? OPTIONAL OR MEDICALLY NECESSARY? "I provide patients with a 10% discount through Fullscript, and the practitioner margin I receive is approximately 25%, which is well below the typical margin received by practitioners." (The other practitioners do use verbiage which disclose a profit.) "Recommendations are made based on clinical judgment and patient need, not financial incentive." So then WHY all the unnecessary additions, even after I told her NO? $$$ I did not purchase every supplement added to my plan In 3 months time, I did purchase $2,781.12 in supplements from which she unapologetically PROFITED. No transparency required. None provided. Icky. A huge turnoff, learning this from a third party. The last time I met with Carolyn, I reported several personal gains. Yay! The treatment was working! Each one of my gains was met by sadly dismissive remarks; followed by her admission of being "nitpicky". (Apologetically edited from original review.) During that same visit, she admonished the nutritionist she works with for recommending an OTC Collagen/Peptides for me. "I'll ask her; we we have a meeting tomorrow" and "you can buy that stuff anywhere". Followed by.....another supplement addition to my plan which she could profit from! The WHY is clearly because Carolyn wasn't making a profit on the OTC brand. By the way, the nutritionist, Magdalena, is lovely and down to earth. If you've read my review this far, I hope you will think very seriously about taking your health concerns to an honest, transparent naturopath with morals (they do exist).

I am incredibly grateful I made my way to Dr. Finnegan's office and will continue to sing her praises as an incredible tool to have in your tool belt if you are navigating any issues that are not acute.
