I learned so much about Maine's lobster industry including how lobsters are caught, which ones are kept for restaurants, and why certain lobsters are returned to the water. It was fascinating to learn about the process and get a behind-the-scenes look at such an important part of Maine's culture. One of my favorite parts was getting to choose my own lobster. It was only $12 to keep the lobster I caught, and then I took it over to Portland Lobster Co. (just about a one-minute walk away) where they cooked it for an additional $15. The meal came with corn on the cob and a baked potato, and I was able to enjoy it right on the waterfront with plenty of seating, additional menu options, and live music. The boat ride itself was about 1 hour and 45 minutes and included beautiful views of Portland's coastline, seals, and other famous landmarks. The crew was wonderful, friendly, knowledgeable, and they made sure everyone had a chance to participate. Even with 17 people onboard, no one was overlooked. They also took photos of everyone, which was a thoughtful touch. A few tips for future visitors: the boat has limited restroom availability, so I recommend using the restroom before boarding. Also, if you have time, definitely plan to enjoy your lobster afterward at Portland Lobster Co. it completes the experience. This was such a memorable way to experience Portland and a must-do for anyone visiting Maine.

There are water taxis available as well-those are significantly more expensive. These are ocean going ferries in Maine. Yes, that means you will be cold if you are outside at nearly any time. Once on the water, we put our music on and had a great time. We brought all our food on and enjoyed brunch, mimosas, and beautiful weather. The boat ride itself was smooth despite some choppy waters. My spouse searched online (I was driving) and found Fogg's Water Taxi and we called to see if we could schedule a taxi. It was so easy and they were so professional. We determined our arrival time and set it up. We were greeted by the most friendlies people and they offered to sit in the lounge area (A/C) and they had fun beverages for purchase, while you waited. The captain of the taxi vessel was fantastic and professional We arrived just a few minutes late for the reservation and still surprised the birthday boy. Oh, you pay the captain of the vessel when you arrive to your destination and they take cash or card. So easy and really not that expensive. Thank you.

Crew and Captain were well-versed in the history of the area. If you had questions they were open to answering or at times making a fun anecdote. So much history of the schooner, Bagheera, and the islands around Portland mainland. They handled the schooner with incredible poise and care. Some folks brought their own snacks and beverages on-board which wasn't advertised, but such a great idea. Definitely colder than I expected when the sun started setting and the winds picked up. My 85 yr old mother booked a cruise out of Portland on the Wendameen. Since I couldn't get out of…read morework, I walked her down to the pier and checked in with the woman working in the booth. I asked if someone would be able to escort her onto the boat and from there she would be all set (she is fiercely independent). I was assured she would be well looked after. And she was! She was immediately seated in the shade while waiting to board and she said everyone was so helpful. It was a wonderful experience for her and I was so relieved to leave her in great company. Just had my second OTR cocktail cruise (I went last year with a Yelp group), and I'm so glad to…read morehave gone out on the Kismet again! This time two friends and I joined the sunset cruise, and we had only two other people with us on the boat. On the Rocks isn't fancy; it's a laid-back local vibe and a great alternative to a giant party boat. Before boarding you have a choice of beverages you can take along, both alcoholic and non; they put them in a cooler, and off you go! You can bring your own snacks on board if you want to. Tours are an hour and a half and that feels leisurely. The route might vary: last summer we cruised over toward Cape Elizabeth, but this time we wound our way through the islands scattered around the bay: Peaks, Cushing, Long Island, Cliff, and the Diamonds. I loved this route for the the glimpses at the back-island views--and then we sailed back toward the port with a gorgeous sunset lighting the way, lights twinkling on all around. Practicalities: it's a bit hard to find the launch point; there wasn't a sign for OTR and they've moved from where I'd caught it last time. Fortunately the first mate eventually wandered down the pier and found me looking around. If you're driving, give yourself plenty of time to park and walk--Old Port is crazy busy in the summer. Money: any drinks you buy and consume will be charged to the card of whoever made the reservations, so no need to fuss with Venmo on board (I recommend bringing some cash to tip afterward, though). And that's really all you'll need to navigate: once you're on board just relax, settle in, and enjoy being out on the Casco Bay!

Usually, there is only one tour guide and it was supposed to be Anne only but Ross joined in as well. The Old Port Culinary Walking Tour is a foodie tour with a mix of history and culture. Our group consisted of 13 people. The tour starts at Andy's Old Port Pub with an introduction from our tour guides. At Andy's Old Port Pub, we were seated in the backroom and had a seasoned, grilled fresh haddock with house-made pickled vegetables, pico de gallo and lime crema in a corn tortilla and Andy's house Lager. Ross talked about the suspicious happenings and history at Andy's Old Port Pub. They both talked about Harbor Fish Market which was right across the street and how the seafood never see the back of a truck. I thought the fish taco was okay and was probably my least favorite food item from the whole tour. Andy's house Lager was very smooth and I really enjoyed it. Then, we walked next door to Gilberts Chowder House where we had a choice of Clam Chowder, Haddock Chowder, Corn & Chicken Chowder, Seafood Chowder, or Seafood Chili. I chose the Clam Chowder. The Clam Chowder was thick and not as creamy as I usually like my clam chowders. Here, Anne was showing us pictures of lobster abnormalities. After having our chowder, we walked to the historic U.S. Custom House and old fishing docks. We even got a postcard of the old fishing docks which was a nice souvenir. Next, we stopped at Rigby Yard and were seated in a small private room. We were offered several drink options; I chose a glass of prosecco. We had the Fresh Maine Lobster Roll with fresh Maine lobster meat Maine-style, tossed lightly in mayo, lemon, and sea salt served on a brioche roll with chips. The lobster was definitely fresh and good. The last two stops were dessert spots: Dean's Sweets and The Gelato Fiasco. We had a needham which is a confectionery dessert bar made from sugar, chocolate, coconut, and potato and we had the option to choose another truffle. I chose a blueberry one. At The Gelato Fiasco, we were able to choose 2 different flavors. Funny enough, I had went to The Gelato Fiasco the night before and it really is delicious gelato. I was glad to try different flavors. The tour finished about 1:45pm. The tour guides thanked us for spending our time together. The Portland: Old Port Culinary Walking Tour was fun and I enjoyed meeting the other people in our group. Anne and Ross were very knowledgeable with Portland's history and food scene. They had good recommendations for other things to do in Portland. The food we had on the tour was okay according to my opinion, but it was definitely a good variety of Maine dishes.
