Casa Roberto is rated #1 for their paella. We were able to secure a reservation during our short visit to Valencia and pre-ordered our paella prior to arrival. Our hotel concierge assisted us in ordering our seafood paella which turned out to be their paella-cooked rice in fish stock with shrimp and fish, a more popular coastal dish. The paella was absolutely delicious! The rice was a bit salty from the fish stock, but was still tasty. Despite a slight bit of a language barrier, service was good. Our server was very helpful in picking a starter and an inexpensive but good local wine that went well with our paella. Overall, our dining experience was memorable and Casa Roberto is definitely the place to enjoy authentic Spanish paella. read more

Went for the paella Valencia. It had artichokes, beans, rabbit, snails and chicken. I feel there was no Safran. The portion was ok but taste wise I wouldn't come back. This place focuses on paella. TL;DR - Bit on the saltier end but good nonetheless. When you step into Casa Roberto, you can sense from the surrounding ambiance (including workers) that they know they're considered one of the best for Paella in Valencia. It's in the way that they talk and how they present themselves. I agree, although it was on the saltier end, paella was one of the best I've had and it was great. We were told that this was the best paella in Valencia so obviously I had to try it, duh. The place was nice and the service friendly but the room temperature was ridiculous. Everybody was sweating in an uncomfortable way. They have 2 paella, we had the seafood one. Totally uneventful. The cheese and ham for starters were also meh. They have Authentic paella Valenciana and after having tried several seafood and even a black paella in Madrid at a popular place and were dissatisfied--we absolutely loved every bit of Roberto's! People voting from The estados unidos don't have good taste, they live in Brooklyn and SantaFe so disregard; we have traveled and eaten all over Spain. And the prices were GREAT! Service was impeccable, the place was packed, the temperature nice and cool for a very hot day today. You know a place is good when you see herds of little old couples shuffle into the doorway consistently. Plus when we arrived for early lunch at around 11am (Spaniard lunch is usually around 2:30pm-4:30pm since dinner is at the ungodly hour of 11pm normally) they asked if we had reservations. That's how wonderful the food is!!! Fantastic, Yummy & LOCAL. These are the words I choose to use when speaking about this diamond in Valencia Spain. My friend lived here a few years ago and she said it was the best Paella she had ever had. Things we adored: 1. The Location: The restaurant is away from the city center which, like in most cities, means that you are most likely to mingle with the locals and not stare at the faces of poor tourists trying to decipher the words on the menu with their translation guides. I usually see the anger and confusion in a lot of traveler's faces & makes me imagine them saying to themselves "Damn you Rosetta Stone and your lack of Practicality!" Anyway the outdoor seating was quiet pleasant. 2. The Wine list: In Spain (little known fact), you can order half bottles. This is great if you are like me and have little tolerance or someone who likes to try multiple wines during dinner. They had some tasty reserves which we tried from a local winery in Valencia. The half bottles really were not expensive either. 3. The Tapas: Usually in Spain you get a cute little plate of food that goes with your alcoholic beverage at a bar or a restaurant. Here we had cooked peppers. A-MAZ-ING! We couldn't stop eating! 4. The Paella: Now there are a few ones that you can choose from. The traditional one from Valencia is of course the ....wait for it....."Paella de Valencia". This one has rabbit & other meat. Of course if you want some thing else you can also try the seafood one which has the word "Mariscos" in the title. IT WAS HUGE! The food is served in the pan where it is cooked specially for your tummy which is wonderful because it has all the yummy liquids underneath the rice (I'm totally making myself hungry now as I'm writing....) The portions were great for the price and we just kept picking at it all afternoon while enjoying the warm Spaniard sun and cool breeze from the nearby ocean. 5. Service: Excellent. The man who served us was wonderful, funny and friendly. He came to check on us and made a lot of jokes! Only 1 thing negative: **Note** Please read the following and try to keep the cultural differences in mind btwn Spain & the US. 1. Getting the Check: Asking for the check and receiving it took about 40 mins. Now in Spain no one is ever in a hurry..... life is nice and slow there so that's 1 point. The other is that by the time we stuffed ourselves the restaurant was in the throws of the busy lunch hour. People kept being turned away from lack of room in the restaurant (either indoor or outdoor tables). Eventually we paid and went on our merry way. All in all A-MAZ-ING place. This is the place for a 5 star meal. I visited for lunch. Now, in Spain, that is anytime after 1 pm usually. There was no rush when I came. I picked the perfect time! I got there and immediately got a table. This restaurant is amazing. The waitress was friendly, patient, and attentive. She told us that our paella will take a while to make. It took about half an hour, but how often am I in Valencia? I was in the paella mood. When it came, the paella was sitting in the pan, a height of an inch of rice filled with escargot, fried chicken(that's right), rabbit, and greens(peppers). It was just perfect! The right amount of salt, oil, and seasoning. I did not add any extra condiments. It was so good that I would fly back to Spain to try it again. I loved it! Would have given ZERO stars if I was able to. From the moment of entering the restaurant the atmosphere seemed forced and condescending. We weren't given a menu until we insisted upon one. Then we were told we can only choose from 3 dishes off the 15 paellas they "offered." We ordered the seafood paella which took almost an hour and smelled like raw fish, gone bad. Should I mention the spoon full amounts of oil that covered everything...At the end of this horrible meal we came to find out we had to pay for the 3 day old bread that was smothered in olive oil served to us as we waited an hour for our paella! Gotta agree re: tourist trap. Overpriced, but the real issue is the very pushy service which sinks to the level of outright deception. They won't show you a menu except under duress, and will try to rush you into ordering overpriced wine and also overpriced, poorly done first courses. I'm happy to pay for good food, and would order both these things, but here the quality/price ratio was at rip-off level and the hustle made it very obvious. Even worse, they pull the "add IVA to the total" scam, the first time I have experienced it. They even reprinted my receipt after I paid, but I didn't realize what was up until I left. Unless this was clearly stated on the menu they try to hide from you, this is an illegal fraud. Even if it's not, no quality restaurant in Spain would ever do this. Ever. All of that might have been forgivable if the paella was ambrosial. But it was not. Tasty enough, but super greasy, with poorly prepared snails and almost no rabbit. Also no socarrat. At least it was actually cooked for us in the pan it appeared in rather than microwaved, so I guess things could be worse. The hotel concierge seemed a bit hesitant when I asked her to reserve us a table here, and now I know why. This place has jumped a lot of sharks. read more

Prices and menus are hidden and the sticker shock of paying double what you would pay anywhere else in the city is pretty unpleasant. Avoid if at all possible. A coworker's Spanish family recommended this restaurant for Paellas. Since Valencia is the birthplace of Paellas, I allowed myself to try one at a different restaurant everyday during my three-day visit in town. Since other yelpers have warned that it could be hard to get a table here, I organized my entire day's itinerary to make sure I can arrive right at the beginning of their lunch hour. When I arrived, it was clear that the restaurant had just opened and I was literally the first customer on site. The waiters sensed my hesitancy and waved me in. I was seated right in the very center of the restaurant... I felt strange being the only customer surrounded by a large group of waitstaff! None of them spoke much English, but all seemed friendly and wanting to make sure I was comfortable. Shortly after I was seated, a few other groups of customers showed up so the atmosphere was more relaxing when not all the attention was focused on me. As I was looking through the menu, the waiter came and pointed to the seafood paella, and said "this one, ok?" I wasn't sure if he was making a suggestion? telling me what i will get? or asking for my order? It was strangely hilarious. Luckily, it was the dish I had in mind, so I said ok. Bread and butter were brought to my table, which I did not eat given my anticipation of having to eat a big paella all by myself. It was a wise decision. The paella did not disappoint at all! The portion (even for one) was huge! It has tons of delicious fresh seafood, the flavor was great (strong but not too salty), and the texture of the rice was just perfect. It was definitely the best one I had in Valencia. After the meal, my waiter brought me a nice glass of limoncello, reassuring me that there was no alcohol in it. Casa Roberto has the reputation of being a nice, fancier restaurant to get good paella. I'd say that reputation is well deserved. The atmosphere is that of an upscale restaurant, including the manner of the service staff. Prices also reflect this; paella will be 18.00+ euro per person, and they'll serve you bread without asking and charge everyone 1.50 euro for it. Their paella is quite good. We got the Valencian style which has chicken, rabbit, and snails. There are other options to get seafood paella as well. About half the people in the restaurant were tourists, and the other half were speaking Spanish or Valencian, so you know it's somewhat popular amongst locals. The aspects preventing me from giving five stars are that I don't think the quality was reflected in the price, and I don't like being surprised charged for things. This is a good place to get paella, but know going in that it's a luxury experience and comes with that price tag. read more

Best Paella in town?!! Where the locals eat! It must be. Tasteful but expensive.

This was by far the best paella i have ever had. We started with the bacalao and smoked tuna appetizer which was amazing and fresh tasting. We then had an order of medium sized gambas/prawns which were so juicy and sweet. And then came the main event, a traditional paella valenciana which is rabbit, chicken, and snails. Highly recommend this amazing paella. This was not your yellow saffron paella you get around tourist areas. This was the real deal with a rustic look and amazing flavor. Nice restaurant, in a quiet neighbourhood. We arrived at 9.30PM which seemed the perfect time, because after just 5 minutes the place was half full. The staff came right to us and asked if we wanted "the paella". The waiting time was around 30-45min (it's prepared at the moment) so we ended up asking for some "gambas a la Guillo" to eat while we waited. We usually eat the seafood paella but, as we were in Valencia, we chose the Valencian paella (rice, chicken, a mixture of green stuff and snails). It was awesome.
