Found this Basque steakhouse via reviews and decided to try it to see if it lived up to its hype. Rated as World's 101 Best steak restaurant in 2023. You can book a reservation online to secure a spot. We did this about a month in advance and received confirmation. Established in 1954 by Matías Gorrotxategi and was mentioned as the best steak in the world by Forbes magazine. Xabi Gorrotxategi, following in his father's footsteps, is in charge of grilling meat and peppers. Hours are 1300-1800 Tuesday to Sunday and 2030-2400 Fridays and Saturdays. Tolosa is a gorgeous city to visit, so you can definitely make it into a daytrip. We hiked up the Elosegi Parkea for a gorgeous view of Tolosa after our meal and later came back to a parking ticket for parking past 1900 in the lot with lots of trees and no parking demarcations 2 mins walking distance to the restaurant, so make sure to read / translate all signs. We ordered their tomato salad, leeks, beef tartare, piquillo peppers and beef txuleta. We finished off with the cheesecake, custard, and tiles and cigarettes. They forgot to bring out our piquillo peppers so we ended up trying it right before dessert when we were pretty much wrapped up. Our server said that the beef is aged for 28-30 days and they choose 6-8 yo cows. Usually the cows are from Germany, however once in a while they have local cown instead. The time we visited, she said our beef was from local cows. The server sees how many people are present and gauges how much beef to order. They can either pre slice it or give you a whole piece to slice on your own. The steak is beautiful and delicious. Melts in your mouth. You can feel the meat is high quality. It was not fatty, but tasted amazing and delicious. Definitely worth trying and the hype. The decoration is nice but low key. Not a lot of seats so it fills up quickly. As you walk in, you'll see the display of meat hanging and another by the kitchen ready to be sliced. The leek, tomatoes and beef tartare were top notch. The peppers were ok, not sure if it was due to the fact that we received them late and we were full by then but definitely worth trying.

Amazing meal here, one of our favorites on a trip full of Michelins. It's simple, but done very, very well. Service is great. Wine list is great and well priced. We ate and drank like kings for a wonderful price. Ulysse Collin paired perfectly with our food. The meal starts with aperitifs and sausages. We ordered a handful of sides/apps in addition to our txuleton (they had the option of basque or I believe german cow that day - we opted for basque). The jamon iberico was magical. The grilled leeks were amazing. The meatball with pepper ice cream had us in tears, so delicious. The white asparagus are amazing and huge, priced by the spear - I wish I had ordered more. The steak was huge (we didn't finish), and so flavorful. The fat was so delicious, the steak perfectly seasoned and cooked, just one of the best meat experiences in the world. We skipped dessert as we were super full, but this will be a guaranteed restaurant stop on every trip to San Sebastian going forward.

If you love steak then you should give this restaurant a try when you're in this area. The appetizers (grilled peppers, tomatoes, asparagus) were all tasty too.

We opted for a few pintxos for lunch while we were visiting town. We also had a couple of drinks my husband got whiskey with coke and I asked for a local cocktail since I'm not much of a wine drinker. I was handed a cup of pacharán which was a bit strong but was nice to try something different. The pintxos came out one at a time which was nice we were able to fully enjoy each on their own. The bao was the only one I didn't really like mostly the bun part. It didn't taste like it was cooked all the way and was a bit gummy and there was not a lot of meat filling. Next was the lamb which was really tender and flavorful. The couscous was ok nothing special and not much seasoning to it. Then the beef cheek and mashed potatoes came out which was the star of the pintxos that we had. It was also very tender and the mash was also cooked perfectly. All of this was shared between the two of us and was very filling. The waiter let us know that some of the pinxtos could also be ordered in a full size if we wanted. We enjoyed sampling the pinxtos and would definitely recommend coming here to get a taste of local cuisine.

We were pressed for time, but the beef cheek here fell apart in our mouths and was married with a perfect red wine sauce over pillowy smooth mashed potatoes, and the shrimp were unbelievably delicate and cooked perfectly, with just the right amount of gremolata to compliment but not overwhelm. Delicious.

The wine list is long - the sommelier unfortunately wasn't there (on a Saturday night?), so we ended up having to choose without guidance which was unfortunate. The service was very lovely, although they did seem to be understaffed which led to issues later on in the meal...will get to those. For the food, we opted for the tasting menu with a supplement from the a la carte. Perfect amount of food, maybe a touch more than we needed and we didn't stay for dessert. The preparations are so simple, you get to experience the purity of the fresh caught ingredients. I loved learning about everything we were eating as we progressed. The turbot really is special, but other standouts were tuna dishes, lobster, grilled squid, red mullet - ok basically all of it. We were looking forward to dessert as we'd heard so much about it, but service really slowed up during the savory courses (understandably, as they spent so much time preparing the turbot at the table). We were seated in the back of the restaurant in the upstairs area, and it was very very warm to the point where myself and other diners were fanning ourselves with the menus. We ran out of water which didn't help. After an extended period of time without water, we just asked for the desserts to go (which they couldn't accommodate as they both had ice cream), but they didn't charge us for everything on the bill so we were ok with it. Even with this unfortunate ending to our meal, we left very full and happy, and look forward to returning (and requesting to sit somewhere where they have air circulation).

I received a confirmation email and a phone call the evening before the reservation to confirm. Pasaia is a lovely village and well worth a visit while staying in San Sebastian and is just a 15 minute bus ride away plus the 1 minute ferry ride. The staff at Casa Camara are amazing. They are the picture of efficiency. Everyone knows their roles and they all get the job done well. Service was really good and they have no problem answering questions in English. From the long specials list, we chose the grilled cigala. It's like a langostine. It was perfectly grilled and salted. They were so delicious. The monk fish was firm, flaky, and sweet. Our table was next to the lobster tank below the restaurant floor. As lobsters were ordered, staff would hoist the cages up to choose lobsters for the clients to confirm that it's what they want. For dessert, we shared a cheesecake. It was fluffy and light with berries inside. It was a wonderful lunch at a lovely place. Make a reservation so you don't miss out on the experience.
