A few miles out of town on the way towards the picturesque mountains of Signal Peak, Avocado is somewhat hidden away, unless you're looking for it. And look for it you should. The selection of desert plants, trees and cactus is excellent, and you'll pick up plenty of ideas as you wander in and out of the winding sandy pathways. If you feel a little overwhelmed by the choice, grab one of the friendly and knowledgeable staff. They can quickly steer you in the right direction if you need advice on what you can plant where, which trees grow quickly, which shed a lot or a little, whether your buds are going to burn or how close together to plant your saguaro. They'll also deliver and even plant your purchases for you - doesn't get much better than that! There are several well-established trees on the grounds (great when you're looking at a sapling and wondering what it'll look like in 5 or 10 years' time), which provide some pleasant shade. The guy that takes care of our gardening, Juve, has a great relationship with the owners and Dan tagged all of our selections so that Juve could pick them up and deliver them to our home and transplant. One of Dan the owner's passions are rescuing exotic birds and he has created an awesome bird aviary on the grounds, it is very tranquil and they have seating throughout the farm so you can take a load off. I could just come and visit this place again, it is a sanctuary off the well beaten path in Maricopa. They are only open Friday thru Sunday, check website for hours, they vary for season. They do not charge sales tax and their pricing is very reasonable, but they only take cash or checks, so be prepared. The variety of plants are massive and they have a humongous variety of cacti as well. I highly recommend Leaf and Feather and am looking forward to my next visit.
