We loved that after a day of hiking their golf cart drivers took us down and back to the private beach for sunset. You can rent a bonfire they tend for you with s'mores. We did not buy one but looked nice. We enjoyed breakfast at their restaurant and also one evening had a cocktail at their bar and there was live music which was very nice. The room had a gorgeous view of the ocean with a fireplace, a large closet, comfortable bed, with stocked and full kitchen. The negative :( Our bathroom , sadly it was very tiny and the shower head was horrible. The connection between shower and toilet was one door that barely fit in the space. Bathroom needs a remodel! After finishing our drinks outside for about 30-40 minutes, we came back to our room and were met with a full-on ant infestation. They were everywhere -- counters, walls, corners. It was beyond disgusting. There is no sugarcoating this. The room was not habitable. We called the front desk immediately. The response? "We'll write it down." No empathy, no action, no urgency, and no offer to move us to another room. No manager contact. No help. Nothing. I have a phobia of ants, and this experience triggered a physical and psychological reaction. I could not stop feeling like ants were crawling on me. It got so bad that I slept in the car -- not because I wanted to, but because I felt unsafe, unheard, and unsupported. On New Year's Eve, no less. At sunrise, we checked out extremely early and left immediately due to the disgusting nature of what transpired. We still have not received a single follow-up from management. That alone speaks volumes.

Decided to stay here myself to see what's what. Wellstone Center in the Redwoods sounds like a…read morewriter's paradise, but buyer before - as others before have mentioned, it is assuredly not. (Check the filtered/hidden reviews.) Wellstone is marketed as a retreat center for aspiring writers, but it does indeed feel more like a shoddy youth hostel. The main house may have once been majestic, but it has fallen into a state of disrepair. The accommodations were poorly maintained and unsanitary, with ripped furniture, non-functioning lamps, and mildew in my bathroom. The grounds were in a sad state, with a filthy pool and unusable hot tub that had only a few inches of dirty water. The mattress was so old, uncomfortable, and sagging that I simply didn't sleep. The bedding had some unidentifiable stains that appeared to be fluids, which was quite concerning. When I brought it up with the hosts, they seemed completely unconcerned and dismissed me. The bath towels were old, scratchy, and smelled of mildew. As others have mentioned, the hosts request that you use cloth napkins - which is great, except that they do not wash theses napkins between meals. They instead instructed us to re-use other guests' napkins at subsequent meals, which is dangerously unhygienic. Reminder that I came here to write. It was a terrible place for me to write, in part because there's a loud family that lives in the house, and in part because there were no lights. That's right -- no lights bright enough to read by. A few mood lamps, nothing more. I am not a morning person and do most of my writing in the evenings. At sundown, I was forced to be done with all reading. It was too dark to read my book drafts, which I'd printed out; let alone any primary sources, books I was using for research. Unless you happen to bring a headlamp or a bevy of your favorite floor-lamps, you will also be out of luck. Make sure to read the other reviews that have been filtered out before you decide to apply for this "writing retreat." For me, it was neither a retreat nor a useful place to write. I wish I'd booked a hotel instead. You might want to consider the same.

This is rather simple. The property is average for a beach rental. Were minor issues like sheets…read morenot being changed and full of sand. But over all I decent stay. The issue and a big issue is. Paying a cleaning fee and a security deposit that the owner keeps at their discretion. In our case the house was left clean and good order. No damage or over the edge cleaning. In our case a $250 charge for the owners feeling a dog was at the house. There wasn't outside of a friends half day visit. Bottom line, after renting in Santa Cruz every year for the past 15, you can find better.

The 2-person soaking tub was every bit as amazing as it sounds. Sagar was warm and welcoming and truly attended to our every need. He showed us the property and gave us a thorough explanation of the room. They bring breakfast to the room each morning. The first morning was delicious and honestly the second morning probably was , too, for most guests, but the baked eggs just weren't our thing. Everything was prepared beautifully though, so absolutely no fault to the chef. Additionally, there are fresh baked cookies and wine available in evenings as well as games available to play in the main entry area. Overall, I loved everything about our stay and we will definitely be back next time we are in Capitola!

The grounds are beautiful, whether you just look out from the stately house, or if you wander on some of the trails -- maybe set for a spell on a bench. If you're looking to exhale and then breathe in amazing nature, you have found the place! The room is very comfortable, too. Our bathroom was plenty big and roomy. Loved the big bath (whirlpool, if you like). The 'full breakfast' is fantastic. Jen is a wonderful baker (a breakfast bread pudding one day; mini churros another day), and each morning we had a varied and hearty breakfast that was delicious and well-balanced. The house itself is big and inviting with hip old timey jazz pipedor more modern-day chanteuses gently piped in. Enclosed porch for reading or just relaxing. Our room had a private porch, too. So much here. So many ways to really unwind. Walking around the grounds is inspiring. I ran into Derek a time or two who was relaxed but busy on the many projects that keep him focused here. The whole place looks perfect for a wedding, or a family gathering, or even a business get-away. Or, of course, just a simple, lowkey retreat. Lovely hidden (but easy to find) gem. My newly married friends chose to rent this entire vacation home for a post-wedding "friendly…read moremoon". I visited just for dinner and the place was pretty fantastic. Very spacious, easy to have 5+ adults simultaneously preparing dinner for 10 and then eating together. Since yelpers love details and are all about full disclosure.... I will say the only VERY small downsides are : 1) the upstairs and downstairs do not link from the inside making it a bit awkward to intermingle easily in either space (or wrangle up supplies!) without going outside first (but I suppose that's for renting out of both spaces to separate parties simultaneously?) 2) the driveway is a tiny bit difficult to discern given the placement of the mailbox but the pictures would really have helped me find it (lucky for me I recognized a friend's car!) 3) truly, there are nice views but I didn't see any super-close walkable path down to the beach which I assumed a "beach cabin" would have, but it seems like it would be a super quick drive, so there is definitely proximity! Beautiful kitchen, fully equipped, 3 bedrm 3 full baths, and an upstairs patio to watch the beach along with the nightly sunset. It was super easy to book and the front office even left me a beautiful flower arrangement at the property when I arrived because I mentioned I was booking for my birthday. AWESOME! The first night it rained but we cozied up to the electric fireplace and pulled the blinds up to watch the ocean from the huge windows in the living room. I had friends that arrive on Saturday and were amazed on the views and the location of the property and asked for property info as they are going to book this particular home.
