Local Bay Area Getaway! I recently found out about this spot during my friend's bachelor party. It's a very secluded neighborhood with a security gate for entrance. The unit they rented was had 4 spacious room. Upon entering, the first thing I noticed were these huge windows overlooking the Salinas River State Beach. I could not believe the view. The window view literally felt like I was staring at a Computer Screen Saver off a 8 feet x 4 feet monitor. It was amazing. It was September, so the weather was a good 55 at the lowest and 77 at the highest with a constant sea breeze air hitting my face. The best part of this place is getting up to the sounds of the waves gently crashing to the shore. I definitely have to come back and share this place with the fam. I know they'll love they'll love this little escape as much as I did. read more

A group of us rented a house this weekend for the New Year's eve weekend. Well worth it, and much needed. No better place to celebrate the ending of a year celebrating a divorce, and newly found love with great friends. The relaxing sounds of the waves, and the peacefulness of the surrounding community was much needed. The house was a little out dated, but we didn't care. As long as we had the gorgeous view, hot water, and heat we were good. read more

I just wanted to amend my original review. My father passed away a few weeks ago not long after I wrote my original review. Sadly, I'm not certain that we'll be coming back to Monterey Dunes (it might be a little hard to come without him)- but I'll never forget the family memories we built here on our family vacation every year. Blown away by our recent to short of a stay here. This is secluded CA coast paradise at its best! And, if you live anywhere else in the country, a fantastic way to escape the heat during the summer. Bring a book, sit on your deck, enjoy the view. Walk on your little pathway through the dunes overgrown with plants and bright flowers and suddenly you are on the beach. A pretty secluded little beach at that. Our condo was a 3 bedroom/3 bath fully equipped with anything we may need including a washer and dryer, blow dryer, soap and shampoo, dishes, kindling for a fire, and most importantly a plunger. The unit was recently carpeted and nicely decorated. However, appliances and furnishings were a little dated, but completely comfortable and useable. There is a BBQ and lovely private entrance way and garden area with a table as well. The view from the upstairs master bedroom is breathtaking. Other on-site amenities: pool, hot tub, sauna, tennis courts. I wish we were there long enough to really enjoy the retreat here. Be sure to hit up the grocery store on the way in though...it would probably take you 20 min or so to get to one. The management over the phone said one thing while when our party arrived we were told another thing--that payment had to be by check only. So, make sure to have your checkbook with you upon getting your keys down the road in Moss Landing. If you are looking for a quick authentic meal and don't want to cook then head to Phil's Fish Market and Restaurant! It's delicious and rather close! Already trying to figure out when we can rent one of these again for a nice little getaway! read more

Monterey Dunes Colony is a secluded beach community in Moss Landing, the heart of Monterey Bay. It features 120 townhouses strung along the stunning coastline of the inimitable Salinas River State Beach. It's a surreally silent place, with the only discernible noise being the calming roar of the vast Pacific ocean. Walk One of my favorite things about Monterey Dunes is the Clubhouse. It features volleyball, basketball, tennis, bocce ball, shuffleboard, a swimming pool, and a jacuzzi. In addition, it's entirely powered by a solar array set up in an unused tennis court. Another bonus is its central location relative to Monterey and Santa Cruz; it's only about a 30-40 minute drive either way. It's also a couple miles away from the restaurants, wildlife, and harbor of Moss Landing. Castroville, the artichoke capital of the world, is a bit farther. The night sky is simply beautiful. On clear nights, the stars are numerous. I highly recommend Monterey Dunes Colony to anyone looking for a coastal vacation rental. Fun Facts: It was formerly located in Castroville, but several owners petitioned to change the mailing address to Moss Landing. It was built in 1975, just before the California Coastal Act of 1976, which preserved vast swaths of coastline for public access; effectively placing a moratorium on much of the coast. This means that Monterey Dunes is very unique, as it is now one of the few private communities on the California Coast. Almost all of the houses are utilized either as vacation homes or rentals; there are only a few permanent residents. read more

Monterey Dunes is my favorite place! Has a beautiful beach, very easy to get to, just take a stroll along your private pathway surronded by beautiful flowers and over grown grasses. There is also a heated pool (Opens around Easter) and hot tub that never dissapoints. Ive been coming here since I was a baby and not once have I been unhappy with my visit. There are many resurants from Mexican food to seafood only very few minutes away. read more

I really wanted to stay here for my mother's 80th birthday celebration and I was going to book two units. I looked up the price on their website, but when I called to book, I was given a higher price for both units!!!!! The woman I spoke with said that their website was not "advertising" prices, that she was the only one with the prices. This is CLASSIC BAIT AND SWITCH and it is illegal!! No matter how nice this place is - there is no way I am spending any money with this place. read more

Take a second look at Monterey Dunes, we were given the keys to a home (#194) when I went to the Moss Landing building to pick up my keys. (this was instructed by the papers sent to me via mail). The lady passed the keys over to me and then took them back and put a sticky note on the papers that said to dial 500 at the gate and it would be opened by her. All went as planned but getting into the room early evening and looking around it struck me that this was a "bait and switch" home. The one I ordered on line was much more clean and modern. I left a message Friday night but no one called me back. I called two more times on Saturday morning long after opening hours. I then received a call back about 10:30 that morning in which I was told to get out of the 194 place because another family was moving in that afternoon. That was a surprise, i was then told to move to #260 where the keys were on the table and the place was unlocked. I was never told to go to this address, much less told that the keys were on the table and the place was unlocked. I had even mentions that I only needed two car passes for parking, as there were 3 given to me. She said that was OK, keep all of them for now. We proceeded to Monterey Dunes and after entering the gate, I said to my daugher driving that the lady had never told me the number of the house we were to occupy. My daughter told me the number was on the car hanger for parking, which was #194. Ok, I thought everything was fine until I noticed the home was not the same I saw in the pictures. It was dirty, had ants in the kitchen, the funiture was old, ripped, stained and the high ceilings were full of cobwebs and spiders, which made the first night miserable. When I was told to move the next morning, our plans were shot, it was my daughters bachorlette party and we were planning to have breakfast in Carmel but spent the the whole morning moving, I had my neice with me from Norway with her 5 month old son. Do you know how hard it is to move a baby and 5 adults to a new place?????? It took us all morning. The lady offered to give us the money back from the first night, I have not have any confirmation on this except she told me over the phone and also told my neice from Norway the same thing. That was Sunday morning, I have yet to hear from her, the office manager about anything. Beware of this company, if I do not get my money back from the fiasco, I will post this on every site I can, no one should have to go through this for 1,248 dollars for two nights. Mary B read more

Great secluded place to spend some quiet time with your "own" expansive beach and views of Monterey (left) and Santa Cruz (right). Had no administrative hassles. The place is tomb-quiet and has just enough infrastructure if one needs "to do" something...like nice tennis courts, jacuzzi, etc. Just a short drive to Monterey. Wonderful place to stay. read more
