We stayed in the newer Boathouse, in the Castaway Room on the right end, ground floor. The privacy and quiet were fantastic! The couples shower feels amazing and overlooks the river. We saw lots of birds and a gorgeous sunset and sunrise colors. Nature sounds enveloped us, as well as the sage fragrance of the garden. The bed was super comfortable, good support, and new. The center room looked like it had slightly more view and the bed was lower to the floor. Being on the end gave us more privacy and zero noises from other rooms. We liked being higher off the ground because we could see a little farther from there. The caretakers came on site to take care of the gardens and kitchen and checked in with us to make sure our stay was flawless. The main building is an old historic building and garden so expect quaint and period details. The nautical artifacts were amazing. There is a fantastic coffee shop called The Power Plant 5 minutes away for coffee, smoothies, avocado toast, beer and snacks, so we didn't mind having just the basic coffee and tea in the room. For us, the quiet, the views, the energy and location were perfect! If you stay at Captain's Inn, you can walk to the coffee shop, visit the shops in town, eat at the fantastic marina fresh seafood restaurants, and walk to the two touring places that take you to see the otters on kayak. We used Kayak Connect with was great, very easy and great guides. This is the closest and best place to stay to see the otters.

I will say the only VERY small downsides are : 1) the upstairs and downstairs do not link from the inside making it a bit awkward to intermingle easily in either space (or wrangle up supplies!) without going outside first (but I suppose that's for renting out of both spaces to separate parties simultaneously?) 2) the driveway is a tiny bit difficult to discern given the placement of the mailbox but the pictures would really have helped me find it (lucky for me I recognized a friend's car!) 3) truly, there are nice views but I didn't see any super-close walkable path down to the beach which I assumed a "beach cabin" would have, but it seems like it would be a super quick drive, so there is definitely proximity! I knew that going in. It was still starker than I expected. Start with the property. When that is the view off your deck, why go anywhere else? Stunning doesn't cover it. We hiked much of the grounds and every turn delivered something new. The kind of place that makes you slow down without even trying. Then the restaurant. Everything was perfect -- service, quality, execution. Much of the food sourced on property or from the surrounding community. My wife declared the salad the best she'd ever had. High praise for a salad. High praise, full stop. Special shout out to our server Yasmany and bartender Thomas -- both exceptional. What struck me most was how effortless the entire staff made it look. These are people who deal with guests from around the world, all arriving with high expectations of a high-end experience. And yet nothing felt forced. Nobody appeared to be trying to impress us. It was just perfect service, perfectly delivered. That's the rarest thing in hospitality. Highlight of the trip. Hands down. And I suspect, never to be repeated.

PLEASE READ THIS REVIEW BEFORE MAKING A RESERVATION -- IT MAY SAVE YOU THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS…read more If you are considering booking an ocean-view room at Post Ranch Inn between May, June, July, or August, I strongly encourage you to do extensive research about Big Sur's seasonal coastal fog before spending your money. Based on our experience, I would never book an ocean-view room during these months again. We paid nearly $10,000 for two nights in one of the resort's premium ocean-view accommodations because the breathtaking ocean views shown throughout their website were the main reason we chose this property. Unfortunately, during our entire stay, the ocean view was completely hidden by dense fog. We never saw the spectacular view that was advertised and pictured online. What disappointed us most was the lack of transparency. The website showcases beautiful, clear ocean views but does not adequately prepare guests for the possibility that the view may be completely obstructed for an entire stay during certain times of the year. If guests are paying thousands of dollars specifically for an ocean-view room, they deserve clear information about the seasonal risk of persistent coastal fog so they can make an informed decision. Throughout our stay, we repeatedly asked staff whether the fog would clear. We were consistently told that it would likely clear within a few hours. Unfortunately, that never happened. The fog remained throughout our stay, and we never got to enjoy the ocean view we paid a premium for. What made this even more frustrating was that, after repeatedly being told by multiple staff members that the fog would clear soon, one employee later told us that they were not supposed to tell guests that the weather was expected to remain the same for several days and that these foggy conditions are common during this time of year. According to that employee, this type of weather often persists throughout much of the summer season. I cannot independently verify that statement, but if that information was accurate, it raises serious concerns about transparency. Guests spending thousands of dollars for an ocean-view room deserve honest information about the likelihood of actually seeing the ocean during their stay. The room itself also had maintenance issues. The bar sink was clogged, and the shower valve/faucet was loose and repeatedly fell while being used. We reported both problems, but neither was repaired during our stay. Staff apologized, but no one came to address the issues. For a property charging close to $5,000 per night, I expected much better communication, transparency, maintenance, and overall value. I fully understand that the weather is beyond the hotel's control. However, what is within their control is how honestly they communicate the risk of seasonal fog to potential guests. Had we known there was a realistic possibility of spending our entire stay looking at a wall of fog instead of the Pacific Ocean, we would have chosen different travel dates, a different room category, or a different destination altogether. The property itself is beautiful, but based on our experience, the value did not come close to justifying the cost. If an ocean view is important to you, think very carefully before booking an ocean-view room during the late spring and summer months.

There's the pot at the end of the rainbow. You drive through the gate and along the vineyard roads to arrive at the Inn. Once you get there, the check-in was seamless and Jan and Jon were wonderful. The accommodations are luxurious and the scenery is second to none. Looking at Pinnacles National Park in one direction and the Santa Lucia mountains with the sunset in the other direction. Sitting on the patio, enjoying the hummingbirds at the feeder and then venturing down to the pool for a little wine and cheese social was the icing on the cake. This is a phenomenal location and is definitely a hidden gem in Monterey County. It would be perfect for visiting the national park or just for a nice getaway weekend. We will certainly be back in the near future.

We reached the gate around 8pm in complete darkness, with no network service and no easy way to get in. The winding dirt road lined with grapevines felt a little intimidating in the dark, and I have to admit, we were feeling a bit unsure at first. But once we sorted out the gate and settled in, everything changed. The next morning, we headed out for a hike in the forest, and with the sunrise lighting up the hills, we finally saw just how incredibly beautiful this location truly is. What felt a little scary the night before transformed into rolling countryside, peaceful vineyards, and breathtaking views. When we returned from our hike, I began to fully appreciate and fall in love with the entire property. In the daylight, The Pinnacle Inn feels warm, welcoming, and truly like home. See the pic of me sitting on the edge of the all memory foam bed, with no supported siding/edges, and NO SUPPORT at all unless you are light as a feather or young. If you have back or hip issues, neck issues, or sleep with two people who literally don't want to roll into each other in the middle of the bed...these beds are torture. I had to gather blankets from the car, extra towels from the bathroom, sheets & blankets from hallway linen closets to make a pile on the floor that was better to sleep on than the bed. I toss & turn at night and get up to go to the bathroom a few times, I couldn't even get to sleep due to the slope issues. Trying to turn over the mattress would bounce up to meet my body, making turning over a huge chore. While the floor was obviously too firm, it wax far better than the bed. When we told the owner, she literally didn't bat an eye and quickly recited how everyone loves the beds & they have a list of guests to send the bed info to...it was so quick a response, with NO "I'm so sorry you had to do that" that it felt like she has heard this before and this is her pat answer. For people in the hospitality business for years, this was not an adequate response. So many of my friends said how they could've sleep in a soft bed - - so, this review is for those of you who need a SUPPORTIVE or firm bed, you will need to go elsewhere as all the rooms have the same mattresses. If I had seen a review like mine, I would have chosen to stay elsewhere - even though the themed layout was right up my alley. Between my husband being a bigger guy and us in our 60s/70s with various normal aches & pains, this mattress was a huge detriment and you just need to take it into consideration before you book. We are retired and travel 4-5 months a year around the world and I have NEVER encountered a bed like this (and they are new!!). Just feedback about the bed as the Inn is pretty and breakfast good. Was just disappointed telling them about sleeping on the floor was taken so nonchalantly.
