Absolutely outstanding! I picked up 70 good sized brand-new surplus boxes, 15 pounds of packing paper, two rolls of tape, and four mattress bags, all for less than a quarter of what I could get this anywhere else for. I obtained a quote for all of this on their web site (just like any other shopping site, but you get a quote from them after you fill your "quote cart"). I received a very prompt, courteous reply, and the staff put all of my items together and had them ready for me to pick up at will call. It honestly couldn't have been any easier! All of the staff were superbly helpful and friendly, professional, and helpful! I especially appreciated the gentleman at the pick-up area who loaded all of my items into my car for me in a very fast and caring manner. He very slowly and cautiously closed my trunk lid to make sure there was plenty of clearance and nothing would get damaged. He was one of the most enthusiastic and friendly people I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. The establishment has a minimum $45 purchase, and keeps limited hours, but these are very small (I hate to say "inconveniences") items that are MORE than made up for by the rest of of the fantastic shopping experience. Carton Service sells defective products. They don't care about their customers. I purchased a $19.00 box and it was apparently so old the glue had dried and when I attempted to use it, the glue failed - it was brittle! I emailed the company with pictures and my receipt and they didn't even respond. Carton Service can't be trusted. This was a good company many years ago - not any more! Boxes make the world go. For small boxes your standard mailing and shipping outlet, the postal service, FedEx, and UPS, shippers have expensive and convenient boxes. Same for UHaul. Expensive and convenient. Then every store is getting rid of them continually and many are reusable. Free and not so convenient. But if you need specialized boxes, moving boxes, custom boxes, Carton Service is the place in Portland. Recently they quoted some custom size double wall boxes for a ridiculously reasonable price. They have even more specialized items like drums, plant trays, berry flats and mountains of recycled styro peanuts. If you are moving, it's a great source for unusual boxes, like wardrobes and mattress boxes, often available used. Their warehouse is cavernous with pallets of flattened boxes stacked to the ceiling in every size. Family owned in Portland, and the same family rents artist warehouse spaces at artist-friendly rates in the coolest buildings in town to many friends. They have even let artist friends put on a performance in their warehouse! The best source in Portland for specialized boxes, or large quantities if you are a business that needs that. Carton Service has them, however (yay!), and the first time I ordered a batch of them was in 2016. I'm running low, so yesterday (August 12, 2020) I called to see if they still had them so that I could re-order. The friendly employee who answered the phone RECOGNIZED MY NAME and found my order history instantly. The next day (today) we got the text that they are already ready for pick-up (they could have sent the order UPS but it would have cost more, so we chose the pick-up option to save $). Please, think twice before you read the crap reviews for this place. I went today to find some boxes to ship my art. I needed some pretty odd sizes and they had them, and more. The reviews that said that customer service is crap are wrong, too. The guys at he front counter were super nice, found me weird boxes in the warehouse, picked from the floor, and even carried boxes to my car. I get that the $45 minimum is daunting, but really buy some dang bubble wrap, save it for the holidays, and get over it. Better yet, go buy some local art and ship it to your relatives. An amazing one-stop shop for moving supplies. I made a visit to carton service today to pick up the necessary moving materials to move a one-bedroom apartment. I would recommend this place to anyone that is moving or has a need for boxes or shipping material. I got everything I needed for my one bedroom apartment move for about $50, including 25 small/medium boxes, 3 large boxes, a roll of stretchy film, 10lbs of packing paper, and two queen size mattress bags. The moving company I am using requires the stretchy film and mattress bags and charges $80 for those items alone. They have every size/shape moving box you can think of, some for as low as $.60 each (there might have even been some for less that I didn't see). They have a great selection of used/surplus boxes which help to keep costs low. I wasn't in need of this, but noticed huge bags of packing peanuts and surplus/used packing foam. They also have various foam sleeves for dishes and of course tape, box cutters, packing paper, etc. Everything you could ever need. If you are moving, check this place out before you pay too much somewhere else. And for goodness sake, spend $5 on a mattress bag before putting the thing on which you sleep through the torture of being drug on the dirty ground or thrown in the back of a dirty truck. read more

Upon entry, I tried finding something myself since both reps were busy on the phone, couldn't find the exact item, and then needed direction. So after I waited for help, I was totally blown off when I asked a question about where to find a specific size of a box, walked to a general area of the store and left. Let me explain, when shopping, I don't need handholding, but to say "these are what we got and point to an ENTIRE WALL OF DIFFERENT SIZED BOXES with no direction toward the one I told you I was looking for, and call it customer service, would be a lie. I also am not in the habit of giving negative reviews unless it's over the top rude. Later during my purchase, the same person proceeded to tell me, after asking about their return policies, that if I didn't return unused boxes within 2 days and pay a restocking fee, they wouldn't return any that I didn't end up using. (Which is perfectly fine in my opinion.) But then he then asked me if that sounded reasonable, like it was a debatable issue, or possibly something I would object to? Not sure why he said that, but I replied "it's YOUR policy, I"m just asking what it is". What a totally weird, unnecessary way to act. There is absolutely no reason to act the way he did, especially in a retail atmosphere. It would exhaust me to act this rudely on a daily basis, yet from the reviews for this place, it seems that this may be the way this person acts all the time. read more

Selection: 5 stars Anything you would need for moving/boxes/packing at super reasonable prices. I liked that they had used and new boxes to choose from. Two guys up front: 2 stars Did not greet me, acted as if I was interrupting their personal playdate and when I asked a question they said 'see that little monitor over there, its over there' and I said 'umm, no I don't see it' to which he replied 'you can't miss it'...so I had to search around for quite a while. I'm not asking for much, but if anyone that works there is reading this, a little training for these two 'gentlemen' wouldn't hurt. I found this place about a year ago while I was searching high and low for the best price (like an unemployed guy should) on 5 gallon buckets with lids. Home Depot and those stores wanted around $4, someone on Craigslist wanted $2.50 but they were a state away in Vancouver. Carton Service, $1. Done. Since then I've been back about a hundred times, buying bags of packing peanuts, boxes, boxes, more boxes, and roll after roll of bubblewrap. I love Carton Services - If I ever need boxes or bubble wrap, this is where I come. Boxes are cheap and well-built, as long as you don't care what it says on the outside (A lot of the boxes are surplus or used). They have a huge selection of sizes and configurations. If you need boxes that are blank outside, they can help with that too. The used packing materials are what I love the best. You can get a giant bag of assorted bubble wrap bits, ranging from single sheets of small bubble to 6 feet of large bubbles and sometimes there are specialty types like pouches and such. The bag is about 4 feet tall and 3 feet in diameter and costs around $10. That is such a good price! The service is friendly and helpful and loading your car is easy. If you need boxes and supplies for shipping or moving or storage, I highly recommend Carton Services. read more

Do not shop here ever!! Weirdest and most annoying cashier experience. Looking at these reviews I'm not surprised to see Adam (cashier) has a lot of people calling him out for rudeness. He was awful. I've been buying boxes for my biz here for a handful of years. They have a wide selection of boxes and the specific sizes I need. They have a new $45 dollar minimum policy. I picked up three boxes that cost a few dollars each, which I have done many times. Went to the register and Adam says I can't sell these to up because they are not $45 dollars. I say oh, sorry is that a new policy I have always come in a picked up a few at at time when I need to ship things. He says yes it's a new policy. He clearly doesn't care. I ask if they can make a exception this time I need to ship things today and need this size box. I say in the future I'll buy bigger orders or go elsewhere but I'm in a time crunch today. He refuses. I ask can I just pay cash? Is it a computer issue. He says no it's the new policy and can't help me. I ask hey can we call the owner to get permission so you don't get in trouble. I'm trying to give the store biz and I need these today. He pushes a few buttons on the phone and says the phones are broken or he would call the owner to ask. Hmmm ok weird. I say here call her from my phone. He refuses. Ok, can you call her from your cell? I'm still thinking that this is an easy thing to fix. I am trying to buy things from the store after all. No he won't call from any phone. So I guessed he was just lying to my face (I called the number after I left and sure enough they picked right up. No broken phones, Adam is just a liar). He then says that he would be happy to just charge me $45 for the boxes!?? Now I'm wondering if he is trying to price gouge or just on a petty tyrant casheers power trim. Looks like it's a bit of both. I bring other merchandise up that adds to more than 45 dollars. I ask if I can buy more and return stuff. He says yes I can return stuff according to the store policy but that he won't allow it and says he knows I'm just trying to hustle him! Wow, ok rude guy on a power trip. Hustle, yeah, buying boxes from the store for the normal price would be a hell of a hustle wouldn't it. Don't tell anyone about that awesome hustle! He seems unaware that he quoting an absolutely inflexible policy of $45 minimum but is willing to disregard the store policy on returns just to spite me or force more money out of me. I buy stuff I don't need to get the minimum. I have no choice at this point, I need to ship today. I ask to return stuff, point to the invoice he just handed me that clearly says that I can return new unused products. He refuses. I'm not surprised because he has been increasingly rude and ridiculous but still, wow. It must be illegal to refuse to honor a return policy. I'll be looking into that. I see there are some mixed reviews here, so I thought I would relate my experience today. We were greeted by two guys, and one (Markus) jumped right up to help us. We were looking for a box with an unusual dimension for a guitar we need to ship. Markus looked high and low and didn't give up, finally finding us the perfect box. I thought the service was outstanding. Not only that, we learned they have an amazing inventory of used (almost perfect condition) boxes for SUPER cheap. They have book-box bundles for less than .65 a box. Packing supplies and packing peanuts and other assorted filler in giant plastic bags that stand at least 4 ft tall, most priced at $15 a bag. Unbelievable. We came for a guitar box, we left knowing we'd drive from Washougal, WA to buy moving supplies next time we move. 5 stars! read more

Have shopped here many times in the past 15 years, never a problem. This time I had to exchange one single unused box I purchased from them three days ago, and got treated rudely. The fast taking cashier said "we have a 20% recycling fee", I responded that the box was new, he said "when did you buy it", I replied three days ago, he said " It doesn't matter, it's still a 20% recycling charge, it's right there on the wall". At that point I know this guy is a problem, I haven't asked for anything, I just need a box that is a different size and didn't really care if I had to pay extra.. I made it clear to him I thought he was rude, got the box I needed (which was smaller), and went back up front. He felt the need to force me to apologize to him before he would ring me up. This place is a ripoff. You can get everything cheaper and with better quality at a U-haul store, for example, the one on SE 50th Ave. and Powell. They will even give you free used boxes, often in excellent condition, the same ones the Carton Service overcharges you for! If I could give them zero stars I would. I have been coming here for almost 15 years and never had any issues. Today I run in to grab a few boxes and new roll of packing tape and the guy at the counter says "$45 minimum to make a purchase in the store". WTF, WTF, WFT!!!!???? Seriously?! I'm standing there with cash and you won't take it? There was literally no one there, it's not like they had a line. Then he offered to charge me a $7.50 service charge instead. In April 2017 they instituted a $45 minimum order. I see the store's response below to the 5/9/2017 review by "CLB P."; that they had to make this change "due to cost per sale" being too high. I understand the need to charge a minimum order to offset the service costs when people buy just one or two boxes but how they came up with $45 (they are selling surplus boxes valued, on average at $3 to $4 each) is hard to comprehend. EDIT: In Feb 2018 I actually needed a large number of boxes so I knew I would be able to reach their $45 minimum. When I was in the store I discovered that the $7.50 service charge alternative (for orders under $45) had been eliminated. When I asked why, I was told that too many people were choosing to pay it. No joke! SUMMARY: if you are able to satisfy their $45 minimum, it's an excellent place. read more

Everything you would need for moving/storage/etc. Highly recommend it. I used to go here regularly for boxes and packing tape. They have a new policy that you have to spend $45 or over (or they tack on an extra 7.50). This is annoying, but if that's the policy, fine. We were there, so figured we should suck it up and buy the things we needed. The problem is that the quality of their items seems to have deteriorated. We bought some packing tape and it was unusable. The main reason we go here is for the packing tape - it was inexpensive and it was the best. My husband refused to use any other tape. This time we bought some, and it was impossible to get off the roll, then it wasn't sticking properly. After spending about 30 minutes playing with it, we cut our losses and just threw it in the trash. I've ordered new tape off amazon, which is where we'll be buying this stuff from now on. read more

I knew exactly what I needed and was in and out in less than 5 minutes. Walked in around 20 minutes before closing time, was asked how they could help me. Said I needed packing peanuts and was directed to their selection. Man, they have options! Regular, anti-static, recycled, compostable... I purchased a 14 cubic feet bag of new regular styrofoam peanuts for under $18 (I use them in the base of some planters so my pots aren't so heavy and to improve drainage). I searched everywhere for boxes - grocery stores, the recycle bin at work, U-Haul, even those reusable green alien box crates.... It was a nightmare! New boxes are ridiculously expensive and I couldn't collect enough secondhand boxes to make a dent in what I needed for my move. Enter Carton Service! This place is AMAZING! I got all the boxes I needed, and 4 huge rolls of packing tape, for about $60.00. The store is clean and so well organized- they even offer free coffee! The staff were friendly and helpful, even helped me figure out what I would need to pack up my 3-bedroom apartment and loaded my boxes into my car for me! Plus, the boxes were incredible! I got sturdy, awesome boxes that were mch stronger than the U-haul cardboard, for about $0.45 a box! I shopped in the used section, but they have a large selection of new boxes as well. I plan on reusing my (now twice used!) boxes for my company's upcoming move to a new office! I can't say enough good about this place! I don't know what I would have done without Carton Service. Completely disgruntled potential customer here. The service was hideous, the prices are far too high and the people there act as though they are the only ones in the "box" business that know anything at all even when confronted with the fact that other places sell just about all of their inventory at cheaper prices. I've used this store twice for shipping and moving materials. I'll never buy boxes at a chain shop like UPS store, etc again. Carton Services has everything. They have many used and surplus boxes. If that works for your needs, these are 1/3-1/2 the price of new boxes. I have also bought shipping supplies here for a large international shipments. Really good experience both times. i am strictly giving this one star review based on the behavior of the same man described in the other reviews. i don't know his name, but he is absolutely unbearable and my luck seems to be that i cannot avoid him. there are usually 2 fellows there. the one on the left seems much younger, has dark facial hair and is VERY kind and helpful. i get the feeling he would be more helpful if it weren't for the lazy tyrant to the right who seems to think customers come here for the Costco experience. in and out with zero customer service. oh, and a healthy dose of "i'm the big man in charge now follow my rules" i've been visiting CSW for approximately 10-12 years at least 6 times per year. about 50% of the time i needed bizarre sizes of boxes and the folks up front (from approx. 2005-20012) would bend over backwards by using this super complex machine known as a "computer". my mind was blown! they would even get off their chair and walk you to the proper box storage section to help customers. i think CSW has the same disease Cline Glass had before they got shut down. "we are the only game in town for this type of thing so suck it up and deal with this guy" i think he popped up sometime in the last 5 years and what a difference it has made. i still use the business because their inventory is top notch but i think i sometimes buy bigger boxes than i need due to the afore mentioned change in customer service. maybe this guy would be better working in the office and NOT with customers who he CLEARLY loathes. read more
