I bought a scope for my AR and was told free sighting then had to get a raincheck for 3 people I paid for , lost paper don't have me in there system, wanna charge to sight the scope only reason for it was sighting for free, scam artist. Would not recommend buying anything there read more

I was very disappointed coming to this gun shop. I have purchased many long guns. I was immediately denied my purchase when I presented my NY ID. The firearm I wanted to purchase was NYS compliance. Not by any means anything questionable. I have passed background checks and purchased many firearms from this area. The salesman I dealt with claimed that because of the different state laws he couldn't sell. He was very rude and aggressive toward me. Very unprofessional . read more

I was having trouble locating ammo for my wife's carry 38. I decided to shop local and buy from Carters. Big mistake. I paid for the ammo and shipping but have never received my purchase. Have tried to call but always get an answer machine telling me to leave my number but they have never bothered to call. I will never purchase from carter country again. Did I forget to leave my cloak of invisibility at home? Wait, nope, sure didn't! It certainly seemed like I had it on while I was in Carter's Country. They have a great selection of weapons here. From Beretta to Glock. Smith and Wesson to Kimber. Springfield Armory to Ruger. There are plenty of guns to check out; if only the employees working behind the counter would let you. Not once was I acknowledged by any of the staff there. Even after making clear eye contact and giving them a nod, I hardly got more than a smug glare in return. Sure, I'm pretty sure I'm not in the typical demographic that this shop caters to, but I'm a Texan and a gun owner. I think that meets plenty of the criteria to be a legitimate customer at this store. Sure, answer that gentleman's question it's not like I was here a good 15 minutes before him. Clearly, I was looking at some specific handguns in the case and I'm sure I had a look on my face that screamed "Me! Me! I need help and I'd love to buy this from you right here and right now!" I really don't ever see myself making a purchase at this store. The only reason I'd return would be to compare prices with stores that actually acknowledge my existence. read more

Decided to give Carter another chance. The customer service was much better this time around and I was greeted as soon as I entered the store. The only gripe I have about my recent visit is I felt I was being rushed while trying to decide what I wanted. Large selection of rifles, some shotguns, and many handguns. A small selection of used hand- and long guns. Also sells all genres of accessories. The trick to Carter's Country is "wait until [it] goes on sale." Their sale prices on new iron tend to be pretty good, though not as cheap as a discount store without the selection, knowledge base, etc. The sale flyers get posted to their website weekly - no inventory search or anything, and they will run out of sale guns and don't give rainchecks. Overall, these factors make me willing to pay CC sale prices. I haven't seen the sales guys be too condescending, but they do get pushy and impatient if there are other customers waiting. Currently playing the waiting game for a couple items on my wish list.... read more

Unfortunately I have to agree with most of the negative posts about the customer service. They get a star for selection and accessories but what kills the experience everytime is the customer service. I have bought 2 shotguns and a rifle from them in the past but only once was that experience enjoyable. I am sorry I don't have the name of the one sales rep that really helped out my buying experience that one time. The rest of the reps I have had contact with are dismissive and unhelpful. To the store I say this: Listen, this is your expertise. Your customer seeks your help and guidance. When you make it a difficult process with unnecessary attitude you lose repeat business. Carter's Country on I-10 I have visited the Carter's Country on I-10 numerous time because they are next door to some of the best Bar-B-Que. I love their selection of guns, but the service behind the gun counter is horrible, very rude, condescending and arrogant. I have had a number of the employees at the gun counter talk down to me as if I were stupid when asking about a guns. I have witnessed this also happen to other customers when they are looking to buy a gun. It seems the older the employee is the more condescending and arrogant they are. I wish there were other gun stores with the same gun selection close by. I hate going into Carter's but they have the best selection and price. read more

Salesmen have gotten really bad since Obama's run on guns started. Arrogant, condescending, egotistical, self serving come to mind, when/if you can get someone's attention. "You just want to look at it or you gonna buy it?" Don't go on weekends and stay away from the guy with the white beard. If I want to buy a pink .380 and they have one, they should sell it to me, not tell me that pink is a bad color, Taurus doesn't make a reliable gun, that a .380 is a 9mm short and isn't a good self defense choice. The chances of it being use in a self defense situation is almost zero!!! It has a much higher chance of being used on a spouse or relative. A good salesman would pull out the pink Ruger, the Diamondback and the Purple Sig in addition to the pink Taurus. Used to be fun to shop here. Dunno what happened to this store. Selling all these assault rifles to stupid people, they've forgot how to sell to knowledgeable responsible hunters. Who needs a laser on a gun with a 2 inch barrel? Like everywhere else, poor selection of pistol and .223 ammo. Cheaper than Collector's but not Academy. read more

READ THIS REVIEW FIRST: This is Texas- you can take your pick on where to purchase firearms, but I suggest you come here. I've had only positive experience with this place. The staff is extraordinarily friendly...and not just for a gun shop! The sales people I've dealt with have all been quite knowledgable about the products and genuinely enthusiastic to help me. There's an excellent selection of inventory and plenty of bargains to be had. There was a sale during my last visit, and I walked out with two high quality firearms, accessories, and some gunsmithing services for far less than I'd expected to spend. It's as close to a one-stop shop for hunting/ sport shooting I've run across without having to wander around a mega-store. Most of the other reviews on this site are misleading, in my opinion. I was really impressed with the large selection of firearms here. This is probably the biggest selection of firearms in the city of Houston besides the Gun Show. This place mainly focuses on hunting gears and firearms versus camping or fishing. (Cut Rate is right next door for your fishing gear.) Large selection of gun safes too. Customer service is not their strongest point, The gunsmith is nice and will take a minute to answer a question even if you are not dropping off a gun for service. That was not my experience with the sales person I felt with (even though I did buy a gun) read more

I walked all around the store down every aisle and along every counter, and not one person asked if I needed help in my 15 minutes there. They were caught up in their own conversations. I have several weapons. I always did my research and always ended up back at Carters for the sale. They are unindated by people who have never held a weapon let a lone shot one. MY advice is to research what your needs are and then go in, there is such choice caliber, stopping power, conceal and carry and looks. Most guns are good you can spend alot for a name and be very unhappy with what you bought. Do your research! Trust me you don't want to walk out with an expensive trinket. They are busy and buying a weapon requires as much thought as buying a car. read more

Went in to trade a pistol and get a gun for my wife to use. Could not be more pleased with the experience! Was assisted by Larry. He helped me choose a gun; choose some accessories; gave instructions on how to safely disassemble, clean and shoot the gun. And, then handled all the paperwork and walked me to checkout. Poor customer service was observed at my time of visit reason being the Hispanic Female operating the cash register , who would not give me her name, was very rude , lacks customer service , and people skills . I over heard a statement the Hispanic female stated when a customer called in stating "people are to ignorant to understand policies and procedures , people are just stupid". The visit left a very sour taste in my mouth . As a law enforcement officer I was flabbergasted by the treatment I received I will not be back and will advise my colleges who visit the store frequently and advise them there business should be taken else where. read more

Super cool store with a good selection, but good Lord are the older salesmen a crotchety, pissy old bunch. Nobody expects them to be bubbly restaurant waitresses or even chatty, but Jeez they act like you're wasting their time when you go in there. My advice; do your own research and know what you want to buy. The salesmen will help you but after a few minutes of their sad expressions you just want to leave. And you certainly don't want to reward them with any of your money. read more

Naturally got put on hold by the gunsmith and after a few minutes on ignore I called back only to be told I just missed the gunsmith as he just left for the day!!! This is the second place we went to this past weekend to find our first handgun and get a concealed license. They did not have classes and the prices were sky high! We asked to look at a Glock and the man behind the counter had the nerve to ask me before even reaching for it in the case "are you gonna buy it?" Came down for a visit on the way to the range. Worst experience ever. The young people there are really friendly and helpful but my god the old geezer there is rude as eff. I'm going to describe specifically who it is so you can avoid confrontation with this old bastard. His face is sagging, white hair, skin as red as his attitude. I was looking for some CCI .22 LR. They have a 22LR shelf there but none of them are CCI LR. Spotted that they have more behind the counter so I went up and asked the staff. So while this younger staff was trying to help me look for some, out of the blue this old bastard cut in and start POINTING at the 22 LR shelf saying " isn't that it right 'here sum' 22 LR. There's lik' dang' box full of 'em " I went on and explain that I want copper nose LR like CCI. Young staff guy had to cut him up and help me. Ask the young guy if they have any p238 magazines. Old geezer cut in again "What what? What you looking for??" Went to back of the store pulled out two mags. One 7 rounds and 6 rounders. I asked him how much for the 6 rounders. He said "they are both 54$". Me: "No thanks I'm not gonna buy it at that price." -went on the longest stare down. -lol wth? I walked in to Carter's Country wanting to purchase a Browning 725 over under shotgun that was in stock. The same exact gun was $250 cheaper 15 minutes down the road at Bass Pro Shop, but I still wanted to give Carter's a chance. After asking the salesman why I should buy from Carter's and not Bass Pro Shop, he didn't have an answer. Foolishly, I was even willing to still make the purchase if they would give me a discount on accessories, but they would not even offer that. So, I drove 15 minutes further down I-10 and saved $250 like anybody else would do. I really wanted to make a purchase from Carter's, but I'm not going to overpay to do so. I'm giving this two stars only because one of the employees was very helpful. The other cost them a sale. I went in today and was looking for a sight for my AR. I had narrowed it down to two different sights and asked to look through them. The batteries were dead in both. I told the sales person (I wish I knew his name) that I was ready to buy one, but I needed to see how they actually looked running. He reiterated that the batteries were dead and just stared at me. He then proceeded to gripe about working at this location. The second sales guy was more helpful. I was looking at a couple of youth .22s and he was more than happy to help even though I stated we couldn't buy them today. They are for a youth program. I used to go to this store a lot back in the 1990's. It used to be a really good place to go. Now, the employees just treat everyone like crap. It is really a shame. As other reviewers have said, they would rather go to a local store rather than a big chain. But, if the customer is treated like crap, I will just head on down the street. read more

If not for their broad selection of guns and accessories and close proximity to my home, I'd never buy from this place. Convenience is about the only thing this place has going for it. The service is a crap shoot every time. From my experience over the past few years you've got about a 25% chance of being helped by a salesperson who is helpful or at the very least friendly. And that's only after you spend 20 minutes waiting for somebody to even notice you, especially on weekends. Even the cashiers seem to have a chip on their shoulders. With that said, I have had a couple good experiences with people who really were helpful and polite, but like I said its a crap shoot and I don't go in unless I've done my research and just want to buy and go. I'm not really the type to shop around when it comes to firearms and ammo, but their prices seem to be in line with everybody else. I know that they do have deals on certain items but I've never really paid much attention to them. If you're new to shooting and need advice on a purchase, you can take your chances here. But there are better gun shops in Houston where the service and attitude is much better. read more
