Taco Tuesday! As soon as we walked in we were greeted and given the option to seat ourselves. We received chips and salsa (with refills)....mmmmm so GOOD! I lived in SoCal for a spell and experienced some genuine Mexican food and have been in search a comparable restaurant in this area. So I went by the high marks for CC I saw on Yelp, I decided to stop in tonight and to my pleasant surprise the puffy tacos were outstanding. The service was excellent, my waitress Stacy (without the E in her name) was very pleasant and helpful; Her recommendation was right on and I'm looking forward to my next visit to try another authentic Mexican meal. this was the worst dinning experience we have ever had. My husband ordered the fish and chips. the fish was cold and raw. He sent it back and they made a new plate that was hot and raw. The batter on the outside looked beautiful but the inside of it was uncooked batter and the fish was completely uncook. The second round they brought out a few fries but said they are out so they gave him rice instead. My son ordered taco and fries. He got taco and rice. I ordered street taco and rice. Both of us got nothing but shredded beef in a corn shell with a couple sprinkles of onion. that's all!!! Nothing but unseasoned beef, a couple peaces of onion and a shell. No sauce, no cheese, no tomato, no salsa, no sour cream NOTHING!!!! It was absolutely terrible. And they charged extra for the beef instead of I guess chicken or pork but the menu said you had an option at the same price. we went home and made frozen boxed pizza after and enjoyed it!!!! read more

This is a convenient and close by place to get authentic Mexican food in an area of North Macomb that is devoid of any places to eat that have any sort of character. The tacos are authentic served up with the traditional onions and cilantro. They could use a little more spice but they are catering to the American tongue. Portion size is ok the prices are cheap so I don't complain much. However if you order beans and rice they don't give you much. Also somewhat irritating is they are understaffed for lunch so the service is spotty. For example the overtaxed waitress will forget little things. But I understand the small business thing so I'm not going to fault them for trying to save some money. So go here for a quick convenient fix for Mexican food. read more

We stopped in for a quick dinner, it was our first time here. Not very busy in the restaurant, but did seem to have a few carry out orders. Staff was very friendly and welcoming. Wow! Pleasant surprise of the week. I ate here about 2 years ago when Carter's Cantina first opened but held off on my review because the start-up quirks were clear, so I gave them some time to get it together. Well it's together now and firing on all cylinders. The place is shined up a bit more, the hours are better and the food is fresh and great. The menu was not too deep and targeted the usual Tex-Mex choices. I prefer restaurants that offer fewer dishes but excel at what they do offer. It increases the odds of getting decent food. Carter's is spot-on here. Plus the prices are excellent. I love the street tacos, the tostadas, the enchilada's. It's the fresh lettuce, onions, tomato, and cilantro toppings that jump in the mouth. The beans and rice sides were not the usual generic sides served elsewhere. They stood out on their own. The chips, salsa and queso were excellent too. Many are touting the desserts, however, I found the deep fried churro and cream cheese nachos just average. The deep fried ice cream, below average. It was a small portion of half-melted ice cream unevenly rolled in a crunchy topping, with generic syrups, inflated in a pile of whipped cream. It was served in a cereal bowl. Some have complained about the service, however, I have never had any issues with the service. All the employees have been extremely friendly and courteous. BOTTOM LINE: Give it a try. Nice place, pretty good food. Had lunch here the other day, the staff was nice and attentive. The food was not spectacular but was above average, with good portion sizes. Stopped in for a carry out & was a bit disappointed. I ordered the chicken quesadillas & Flaming Cheese appetizer. The quesadillas were decent, good flavor, but felt they were lacking in the cheese department. The rice that came with it was dry, to me. The biggest disappointment was the Flaming Cheese. It definitely was a huge amount for the cost, but extremely greasy & zero cheese! Every time I order this at different Mexican restaurants, it's always similar. This time was furthest from what I expected (see posted pictures). Super friendly servers & efficient with preparing my meal. I wish I had more positive comments, but nothing comes to mind, unfortunately. It would have been nice to have a great Mexican restaurant in the area, since there are none. read more

I've wanted to try this place since it opened, but since moving to Auburn Hills, I've had no good reason to drive out... until I was asked to move some furniture. It turns out the food here is pretty good. The chips and salsa are above average. The mild salsa is super crazy mild but has good flavor. The hot salsa tastes similar, and looks the same too... so it'd be easy to confuse the two. I opted for a carnitas burrito while my trying-to-be-vegetarian girlfriend got a veggie burrito. She got "vegetarian" rice, but it looked identical to mine, so... I'm gonna go ahead and say they're the same. They tasted identical, too. The rice isn't bad or anything, but it tastes more like pilaf than Mexican rice. The beans are pretty good, too -- not dry, not runny. Me gusta. The queso is unlike any queso I've had. It's not very strong tasting, but it's cheese. Who doesn't like cheese? I mean probably people who are lactose intolerant, but... ehhh. The burrito was pretty great. $8 and huge -- Chipotle size plus one. The grill marks were a nice touch and keeps it all together. I also appreciated the use of fresh jalapenos over pickled ... they weren't spicy (damn!), but that's nothing a little salsa couldn't fix. Four containers of complimentary chips and salsa, sides of rice and beans, T H I C C queso, and one monstrous burrito later, I left uncomfortably full for the next hour. My mind wasn't blown away by Carter's, but it's the best Mexican place in the area by a long shot. It took 20min to get food in a nearly entirely empty restaurant, but the service otherwise was good, and I have no other complaints to make ... just that this isn't the *best* Mexican food I've had. Still, $8 for the burrito is an incredibly fair price, and I'd surely get it again. read more

Best Mexican place around!! Their pork carnitas are amazing and go very well with a Modelo. The staff is always friendly and if you sign up for their e-specials really make it worth it! My favorite is the nacho delux with extra cheeeeeeese!! read more

This place is AMAZING! The salsa is the best I've ever had. I ordered the cantina combo and was surprised how good the food was. The enchiladas are out of this world. Excellent ground beef. Everything was fresh and made from scratch. Even the refried beans. Even though we were full we ordered the churros and again was not disappointed. The only thing missing was the margarita (no liquor license). New Haven needs to expand their allowable liquor licenses soon! read more

Went for lunch today with my sister. I really enjoyed that everything tasted so fresh. Some Mexican restaurants feel they have to over spice everything that sits on steam tables. You won't find that here. Nothing seemed processed or pre-packaged; instead they seasoned with fresh herbs and spices. I had street tacos. One had carnitas-flavorful and super tender. The other was slow roasted beef. The avocado sauce was awesome. My sister had chicken tostados and she said they were great. I wish they sold quarts if salsa! Service was great. Was greeted as soon as we walked in. I was unsure about the avocado sauce so I was offered a sample to help me decide what to order. I will be back again! read more

Tried to hit up another local-ish Mexican place tonight and had to leave due to fighting and outbursts. I knew that Carter's had some updates to the seating and figured we'd give it another shot. Boy, we were not disappointed. The place looks SO much better and was much cleaner. Food was just as good as last time, they've added to their menu, as well. It comes to the table super fast, as well. I liked the salsa much better this time around, too. Service was good. The only thing was that since it's so fast she brought our bill well before we were done and didn't offer us dessert. Not that we would have ordered it at that time since we were about only 1/2 way thru our dinner. My husband was very impressed and left Carter a tip upon leaving. I came across this place on the way to a customer appointment and looked it up on yelp and the reviews were great but I kept my expectations low since it had small frontage in a small strip plaza. I was immediately impressed with the decor finding it above average and although I was the only customer, I didn't let it scare me off. I ordered the chicken fajitas and not only did they present better than most but they tasted very good and you cannot beat the price! The salsa that is served with the chips tasted very fresh. Great flavor! If ever in the area again, I will make it a point to stop by and try that tortilla soup another customer on here bragged about. Wait staff and cook were very friendly and accommodating.
