St. David's Rehabilitation

St. David's Rehabilitation

Mother daughter bonding never seemed so painful…read more In an ultimate nod to maternal codependence and karmic unity, mom and I both seriously damaged our rotator cuffs on the left shoulder recently. Hugging has been extremely awkward. Ever lose a limb? Life as you know it pretty much stops. After surgery, I chose St. David's Rehab because they have a warm pool. I love water. Once a week in water and once on land... Sounded like a good plan to me. Being in a pool made it possible to lift my arm and actually strengthen muscles that had not been used in a very long time. I had originally started at another physical therapy place, but i found their facilities disappointing and their therapists abysmal, always overlapping scheduling so i would basically get 15 mins with the therapist and then they sent me to another room to do my exercises. I thought it was normal as they would begin working with the next patient halfway through my appointment. Lots of PT places do this... Beware!* Christy led me through a series of exercises and stretches and I had 1 on 1 attention for the FULL time. She would touch my shoulder or back and make sure the right muscles were doing the work. She was encouraging but never cheerleadery. Her positive attitude and awesome sense of humor helped me work through the weakness in my arm and shoulder. With her professional guidance, I saw clearly the difference between my weakness and my pain. This office NEVER overlaps patients. Christy was prepared for every session and would take notes, recording changes in my strength and flexibility. When I need to distract myself, like when I went to get a Brazilian for the first time, I tend to talk and talk and talk. Get going on a good subject and I stop thinking about the excruciating pain when lifting an arm that hasn't been lifted in a year. Christy has a magical way to just flow with any conversation... She makes you feel comfortable whether you are a talker or just had a stroke. She can see into your humanity and she has compassion for you, but she never let me wimp out. Oh, and I tried. Last week she told me she was done, there is nothing more she can do for me and this Friday is my final therapy for this phase of rehab. I was not happy. She said rehabilitation of the injury is done and I can do my exercises without her. I respect someone who sees when their job is complete. She is not a personal trainer and doesn't want to waste my time or money. I am just feeling needy and really appreciating the attention. Jessica at the front desk was always welcoming and wonderful, making sure I had appointments scheduled. Amazing what a beautiful smile and some thoughtful words can do for someone who has suddenly become disabled. I could have only liked her more had she liked the Trans Siberian Orchestra less. ;) The other St. David's therapists seem equally as great as Christy and I am sure that each has their specialty. I am partial, however, and once you start with someone it is so so nice to not get shuffled around between 5 overworked therapists.* Sorry, i digress - that happened at the last place and is another cautionary tale. I had rockstar parking but that may have been due to choosing the 8am appointments. If you want to skip the horrid late afternoon parking lot called Bee Caves Road, sign up for the early morning time slots. I am committed to doing my exercises every day and improving my arm to the point that I am back in a month to begin strengthening my arm for swimming freestyle and playing tennis. I would even like to begin training for my second triathlon. There are many things that I can now do with my left arm. Waving goodbye to St. David's is not one of them. *Here is what I learned in the past 6 months about physical therapy clinics... There are several components to success: great therapists, great equipment, specific equipment for your injury, organized billing procedures, clear communication with health insurance, receiving 1-1 attention, therapist preparation, clarity of exercises, and patient actually doing their exercises on their own. Christy at St. David's far exceeded my expectations in all but this final component. ;)

I just read Kimberly's review of her experience with Christy Kananen at St. David's in West Lake…read moreHills. My overwhelmingly positive experience was identical to hers. I had my second hip replacement surgery in mid-April and had started at another PT place a bit closer to my home which had been recommended to me by a family member. After 3 sessions I realized I had made a mistake. I knew roughly what needed to be done because I had already had the surgery once before, so I drove over to St. David's in Westlake Hills (next to the Hills Fitness Center) for a brief meeting and liked what I saw and heard. The facility is spotless and very orderly. Jessica handled the Insurance approval and scheduling flawlessly. And then I had my first meeting with Christy. Christy did a thorough analysis of where I was (the previous PT person did not) and she definitely knew what to do for me: Building my strength but giving me exercises I could do on my own; Stretches and massages to improve my range of motion; exercises to improve my balance. Significantly, I was pretty happy with the PT I received from the first surgery (also through St. David's but at the main hospital.) However I ended up with painful calcification in the muscles and scar tissue around the new joint. I told Christy about this at the beginning of her work with me, so some of what she has done has been to prevent that problem. At my 2 month post surgery check -up...NO calcification! Today Christy told me we were going to be finished after my next 2 sessions, and I felt a bit sad...but my already enormous respect and gratitude for her increased. She has known what to do, always has had a specific plan for it (full 50-55 minute sessions, NOT 25 minute or overlapping and working with more than one person, or sending me off to do exercises with a PT tech. But she also knows when we are finished. I am exceedingly pleased about my experience here and especially with Christy.

TLDR: don't even think twice, just come here and you'll walk out a new person!! Alexa, what is…read morepain? I was referred here after not one but TWO car accidents that completely left not only my car but also my body destroyed. I've been receiving treatments for 4 months now starting in March (basically beginning of the pandemic) and started on an acute treatment plan where I came in twice a week for a bit and then it became once a week. All I can say is that Sam is a miracle worker!! I went from being sore and constantly feeling discomfort in my hips, back, shoulders, with pain in my left arm and right leg, (I wasn't kidding when I said body was destroyed) to being able to sleep soundly through the night without waking up multiple times from pain or being uncomfortable. I LOVE coming to my appointments, they're the favorite part of my week because I know I'll be able to walk out feeling great. Sam really knows what he's doing; I was introduced to the dry needling technique -- LIFE SAVING! -- and adjusted in the same visits. He asks how you are feeling at the beginning of every appointment and addresses all of your concerns, answers every question you have, and makes you feel like you're a part of the Next Level family! Kelsey and Amy at the front desk are also super friendly and helpful, the exercises I learned for some physical therapy at home for "homework" have definitely aided in my recovery. They also work with you in scheduling and are as flexible as they can given their busy days! I'm now able to work out almost daily and am so glad that I was able to get treatment here! I highly recommend it to ANYONE who is in ANY kind of discomfort.

Over the past several months, the PTs at Three Lakes have fixed multiple issues with my abovementioned body parts with great success. Every PT at Three Lakes behaves in an incredibly kind and professional manner. Therapy visits start and end on time, and the exercises are effective and efficient. The facility possesses advanced equipment that the team uses in innovative ways; there are a lot of machines I have never seen before at any other facility, and the team is always brainstorming ways to improve the equipment / exercises. Billing is also very professional and accurate. Overall, Three Lakes has restored my faith in the quality of American healthcare. If you put in the effort with your exercise plan, you WILL get better with Three Lakes' guidance. They also offer personal training and running form appointments, which are also outstanding.

Leslie, Hunter & Tess are dedicated professionals who assess, design and execute your healing and strengthening program. I look forward to every session. They are patient, always encouraging, and dedicated to their craft. At the outset I fully expected another surgery procedure, but now I have largely regained much of my strength and movement range. There's more to go, but Three Lakes will take me to the finish line. I highly recommend them. Harvey S.

Very disappointed. This was my first time going to BSW. I went in to BSW for my regular yearly…read moreblood work recently (december 2025). I was very specific about what blood tests I wanted to do. I was given a zero estimate, meaning my insurance would cover all the tests and I would be billed $0.00. However, I was billed $323.58 after about a week. I called the office and spoke to Lamitra(rude cust serv) Veronica(rude cust serv) and ultimately I was routed to Katie(billing/escalations/coordinator). In the most simple way, I tried to explain, to all 3 individuals, that any medical office I have ever been to in my entire life, has always told me what I will be paying out of pocket and what my insurance covers. However, at BSW, they(lamitra, veronica, katie) all told me they don't have a clue what the insurance covers and I would have to call Blue Shield myself to find out. I was dumbfounded. It's very simple, either lamitra/veronica or kaitie simply need to check my specific plan with Blue shield, see what it covers, if there is still confusion, they(lamitra, veronica or katie) would need to get blue shield on the phone and ask them specifically. Problem solved. All 3 individuals said that they "don't do that, the client(me) would have to do that". You mean every single time I go into BSW I will also need to take time out of my day to Call Blue shield, hold for 15 minutes for a rep, and discuss what they cover and what they won't?? who has time for that?? IN A NUTSHELL: PLEASE BE AWARE THAT AT BSW, YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE PAYING OUT OF POCKET BEFORE DOING ANY PROCEDURE,BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO IDEA I paid the $323.58. It wasn't about the amount, it was about the principal. YOU DONT GIVE SOMEBODY A ZERO ESTIMATE AND THEN SAY "SURPRISE, YOU STILL NEED TO PAY OUT OF POCKET". Also messaged the specific Doctor I saw that day which was Doctor Pena-Delgado. She never even replied. Do yourself a favor and go to a professional primary care facility where professionals work. Wish I could give zero stars.
