Brought my 2010 Mercedes E350 in for a thermostat replacement. Maria at the front desk is the best! Super friendly and accommodating. Had to bring the car in twice as the thermostat I supplied on the initial repair turned out to be defective (stuck closed). Maria only charged me for labor and didn't charge for the new thermostat on the follow-up repair. She felt bad that I had to bring it back. Will definitely go back for any future car repairs. In my 40+ years of driving I've never been stranded on the highway and I finally got to experience what it feels like to be parked on the shoulder and not being able to get home. SO since I've never been stranded, I finally got to exercise my AAA roadside service that I've been paying for all these years but I didn't have a place to have my truck towed to because my "To Go" repair facility told me they were too busy. My "To Go" garage was kind enough to recommend Carson Automotive. When I called, Matt answered and said they were available and to have the tow truck driver drop my vehicle at his shop. Matt asked a few questions on what happened and he knew exactly what the problem was before my car arrived. Matt was able to get my 17 year old truck back on the road within a couple of days at a very reasonable charge. It so nice to find another honest garage to add into my contact list. I just worry about what will happen to Carson Automotive and all of the other honest garages once our totalitarian/authoritarian slick haired governor's rule of killing ICE vehicles become reality in 2035. He will not only kill gas/diesel vehicles but also the livelihood of thousands of automotive repair experts like Matt. I had taken our 2001 Toyota Sequoia in to have some diagnostics checked due to some 'check lights' coming on. Carson Automotive is located on the south east corner of Blair Avenue and Belleau Wood Lane, next to Ohana Dance Group, in south Sacramento. They recently moved from the South Hills 76 gas station which is just west of their present location on 43rd Ave. I was recommended by a good friend that they could take care of any automotive needs that I had. I recently developed a leak in my right rear tire and didn't know the cause so I dropped by the shop. Matt, the owner, greeted me as I entered and asked if he could help me. I explained that my tire was losing air and that I had added more air so I could drive over to his shop but now the air was still leaking and needed him to repair it. He stated that he was eating lunch and he would get right on it after he finished. Next thing I knew he came back to me and told me that he finished repairing it already. Could not have been more than 15 minutes. NOW THAT IS WHAT I CALL "SERVICE"!!!!!! I blew the motor in my 09 Pilot thinking it was done. The previous owner changed the timing belt but not the tensioning pulley go figure. So I was stuck with an 8thousand dollar paperweight. A very special thumbs up to Matt at Carson Automotive. Last week, I noticed that the engine on my Prius was running rough. Shortly afterward, my check engine light came on. I ran an OBD2 scan on the car and got a "Cylinder Misfire" message. After doing a little Googling, I was convinced that I had a bad head gasket. After doing some deep-breathing exercises and preparing myself for a costly repair, I called Carson Automotive and spoke with Matt. Matt quickly diagnosed my problem over the phone and "bet his money" that the problem was bad spark plugs, not a bad head gasket. He was pretty booked up, but he told me that if I had figured out how to do an OBD2 scan, that I could probably change them myself. He sent me a YouTube video on how to change them, and, armed with my newly purchased torque wrench (and the courage instilled by Matt), I tackled the job myself in about 2 hours. As predicted by Matt, the spark plugs fixed the problem. The engine now purrs like it once did, and the "knocks" are but a distant memory. I know I'm going to have to clean the EGR Cooler and Feed Pipe at some point (something I lack the courage to try), and I very much look forward to taking it to Matt at Carson Automotive when the time comes! read more

He also gets your car in and out pretty fast in my opinion, meaning he does quality work in a fraction of the time as dealers who would let your car sit before working on it. I also like how he is local and started from humble beginnings, from sharing his business with a gas station to now having a full size professional shop. I love the automotive decor inside too. This review is not only for my most recent experience but also for my parents (who are not so tech savvy) as they have all their vehicles serviced here. He takes care of their older Lexii (is that the plural of Lexus?) and their even older Ford Excursion. He is honest, efficient, and competitively priced. In addition, he's friendly and is great at explaining options for needed repairs. I called Matt at Carson Auto to see if he had time to do a used vehicle inspection on a used Lexus RX350 I was interested in buying in Roseville. He was able to fit me in quickly and tell me about the car over the phone as I don't live in Sacramento anymore. He was thorough and his green light is all I needed to know the car was solid. PREVIOUS REVIEW (at South Hills 76, Carson Auto's previous location) **This review is a long time in the making and I should have written it sooner. Last March my car began having difficulty starting. It would always start in the mornings or after a few hours of being turned off but if I stopped for a short period of time (like to get groceries or gas) it wouldn't start. On a recommendation from my parents friends, I brought my car to Matt Carson at South Hills 76. He was honest, fast, and reasonably priced. I was afraid my car was headed for the junkyard but it turned out to be just a sensor issue. Last month I had my oil changed at a local place in Napa where I live. They proceeded to tell me I needed a few thousand dollars worth of work from shocks and struts to tires. Never mentioned that I needed brakes so I imagine had I gone back to their shop for the "needed repairs" it would've been even more expensive than the original quote. I called Matt to see if he could look at the car on a Saturday and he said of course so I made the drive from Napa. Not only did he take a look at the car but he assessed that all I really needed were new brakes AND did the repairs all in a few hours. Worth the drive from Napa for an honest mechanic. I needed several items attended to on my Honda CRV at 85000 miles. We discussed my needs and I returned a couple days later. An earlier estimate from another shop for the same work was more than $1,000. The ASE certified technician at Carson did everything I needed and made a recommendation for future work I will take care of at a later date. We had just moved to Sacramento from the Bay Area when my wife's 525 BMW suddenly started misfiring badly and continuously. Checked on Yelp for a good mechanic and found Carson Automotive. Although I understand cars pretty well, Matt impressed me by finding two problems with inlet mixture. The crank case ventilation (CCV) valve was faulty (as was clear when I saw the old part) but even after it was repaired, the ignition was still faulty. Matt did another smoke test on the intake manifold and found that the runner valve was also bad. After he replaced that and topped off the fluids (for free), the car ran fine. The price was very reasonable. I highly recommend Matt and Carson Automotive. read more

All of the folks I've met there are about as friendly as you can get, and Matt is the absolute best. I have come to him with a variety of car issues and he is always honest and will give me options when he can. I was recommended to Carson Automotive through Nextdoor App. I was NOT disappointed. From the moment I arrived they were the nicest people you could ever imagine. They were very honest with me and took time to listen to my concerns. They took my car in at the appointment time. I waited no more than an hour and the job was done. Owner Physically Squared Off with me: First: I'm a 60 year old peaceful tired Baby Boomer. I had Matt work on our brakes and when they later "squeaked", he was wonderful and even replaced the pads again. So credit, where credit is due. Today, the counter lady, (Matt's wife), and I had a frustrating encounter. I should've just talked to Matt about the mechanical symptoms and solutions, but she asked me what my question was, so that's how the discussion started. I DID get irritated about the specific verbiage she was using, and by the end, she was more irritated by my tone than my actual volume. I humbly apologized and told her I'll ask Matt about the brakes. Matt arrived to work about fifteen minutes later. Wife obviously called Matt, before he arrived. I smiled and waved hello as he approached. Matt immediately (angrily) said, "Don't wave at me...Don't be yelling at my wife...You got something to say...Yell at me!" Matt approached me toe-to-toe and literally physically "Squared-Off" with me. I replied, "Okay let's talk." (I just wanted to talk about the brake squeaks). Matt definitely was trying to Bully me, and when I didn't back down, he angrily turned around, wouldn't talk to me at all, and said, "Just leave, I'm not working on your car! I've changed thousands of brakes...I don't need to deal with your brakes and your little squeak!" Matt DID refund us for the second brake pads, (again, credit where credit is due), but: #1: Matt's wife definitely embellished and raised the stakes exponentially for Matt to be so angry when he arrived. #2: As a business owner, it's TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE to physically "square-off" with a customer, without even first having a discussion and evaluating the situation. Many of Matt's customers have given him five stars; however, in this scenario, Matt's wife (obviously) figured she'd get the last word in and escalated the incident, and Matt felt like he was justified in defending his wife's honor. But again, as a business owner, come on guy! At least open a dialog! And DEFINITELY DO NOT SQUARE OFF with a non-combative old man customer that's trying to open a dialog. Extremely disappointed with his conduct...unnecessary...potentially violent...sarcastic...UNPROFESSIONAL. Matt and Wife: We customers aren't always perfect, and sometimes we get frustrated. It wasn't personal, and for goodness sakes, if the customer apologizes, take the high road please! read more
