We recently stayed at the Rainforest Inn during our trip to Puerto Rico, and I want to share our…read morehonest experience both the good and the bad. This is simply our experience, and I'm not interested in debating or defending how we felt. To start with the positives: before booking, I read many reviews and was excited about supporting what appeared to be a small business run by a husband and wife. The property itself is absolutely beautiful , truly breathtaking scenery. The rooms were clean, comfortable, and surprisingly cool despite there being no air conditioning. The cooling system on the beds was amazing. We also did the hike on the property, which was beautiful and definitely one of the highlights of our stay. The wife was incredibly pleasant, welcoming, and knowledgeable about hospitality. She made us feel comfortable from the beginning. Unfortunately, several interactions with the husband left us feeling uncomfortable throughout our stay. Each morning, coffee and tea were offered to guests. One morning, since we planned to hike, we politely declined coffee multiple times. Despite saying no several times, the offer continued in a way that felt oddly tense, as though our declining offended him. During conversation, he openly mentioned that his wife often tells him he comes across as rude. He also praised her hospitality skills, and honestly, I completely agreed with him on that point. What really unsettled me happened when we were signing waivers for the hike. He handed me the waiver with a pen attached. After I passed the paperwork to my husband, my husband reached for the pen, and instead of handing it to him directly, the pen was tossed toward him. Whether intentional or not, the interaction immediately rubbed me the wrong way and changed the energy for me completely. For context, we are a Black couple, and while I cannot say what anyone's intentions were, some of the interactions throughout our stay felt uncomfortable enough that it became hard not to notice. Especially in the way my husband was treated at times. Another example: he offered to send horseback riding information to me. Since I didn't have my phone nearby, I asked twice for the information to be sent to my husband instead. Despite that, the information was still sent to me. The final issue involved the laundry area. We were washing a small load of clothes and some towels during the allowed hours. A few minutes into drying, he opened the dryer himself, removed my personal clothing including bras and underwear -- and left them sitting on top of the washer. He later sent a text saying the dryer was overloaded and making noise, although the load was not packed tightly and was smaller than the load left behind by the previous guests. What bothered me most was not the concern about the machine, but the fact that my personal undergarments were handled instead of simply asking us to adjust the load ourselves. None of these incidents individually caused a confrontation because we chose to remain respectful and calm throughout our stay. However, taken together, they left a stain on what otherwise could have been an excellent experience. Afterward, I revisited some of the lower rated reviews and noticed that several other guests also mentioned discomfort with the husband's demeanor and communication style. I also noticed responses to criticism often seemed defensive. Again, this review is not written to argue with the owners or invite debate from strangers online. This was our experience, and no one gets to tell us how we should feel about the interactions we had during our stay.

This lovely little inn has true island charm--from the private, screened-in outside shower replete with tropical plants, sea glass mobiles, and walls bedecked with sea shells and corral, to the open-air common room with beautifully tiled mosaic floors of local sea life, and birds chirping all around. The location was perfect for us. It was a reasonable stroll to the beach bars and ferry (by way of the path along the pond). But the distance from those "lively" spots means that an evening spent on the veranda at the inn is restful, not like your third-story balcony over M Street in Georgetown. When we booked our trip in March, it was with Kathleen, but when we arrived it was the new owners, Eileen and John, who greeted us. Every thing had been handled so seamlessly that, if they had not told us of their new occupation as inn owners, we would not have known there had been a hand-off. From the helpful hospitality and excellent breakfasts, to the morning greeting of Fiona and Cooper (their dogs), we found this garden by the sea a genuine West Indies experience.

Bellavista Bed & Breakfast - Making mornings memorable with a very special breakfast overlooking the harbor

Bellavista Bed and Breakfast is the best place to stay on Saint Thomas and let me tell you why. Location: The bed and breakfast is halfway up a sizable hill, so you get a clear view of the cruise ship harbor, the ocean, and all of Charlotte Amelie, the second biggest town on the island. It's far enough away from downtown that you can't really hear it, but close enough that a quick 5 minute walk will get you where you want to go. Facilities: An amazing house with surprisingly strong security; if she didn't point it out to you, you wouldn't notice it at all. The house is very open during the day and locked up tight at night time. The house itself is gorgeous with a lovely open living room and a balcony off the kitchen where Wendy, the owner, serves her amazing breakfasts (more on that later). There is a private deck side pool for when you want to skip coki beach and just be somewhere quiet. The rooms are just what you need, and she keeps them immaculate. Breakfast: Prepared to be blown away. My wife and I are pretty used to hotel continental breakfasts: contrasted with Wendy's food the hotels are serving you rubbish. Wendy prepares beautiful meals with fresh fruit, everything made from scratch, and frequently with self made smoothies. Breakfast isn't something you'd ever expect to be this good; for us it was the best part of everyday, and we had some really good days. Wendy: Yeah she's an amenity all by herself. She's incredibly friendly, very funny, and gives you the most personal service you've ever had. She knows practically everything about the island and what to do, she knows exactly who and when to call for cabs, and on top of this runs the whole B&B almost single handedly. She's one of the nicest people you will ever meet. All in all you're going to be getting an experience better than some of the activities on the island you'll be booking. Wouldn't you rather have an amazing experience you can rely on everyday than just the regular old hotel trip? I would, and I am so glad I stayed here.

The views are spectacular and it's so pleasant sitting either on our private balcony, at the pool or at the restaurant looking out over the harbors watching all the activities. My husband and I just spent five incredible days there and can't recommend it enough. It's a stone's throw away from the airport, so super easy to get to. The hospitality is unmatched (Eileen is the BEST!), the rooms are large, clean and spacious, the beds are SO comfy and they've got this salt water pool where you can just relax and soak up the sun and some killer views of the ocean. And can we talk about breakfast?! Eggs, sausage, fresh fruit, toast, OJ, tea, coffee - all piping hot and made fresh for you every morning. Also, they've got this incredible on-site restaurant, Island View Steakhouse. Chef Marshall Bishop heads it up and trust me, the man's a genius. We unfortunately only dined there one night since we wanted to hit up all of the other "good" restaurants on the island and regret not having another dinner there. Every last thing about our meals, from appetizers to dessert, blew us away. Those meals were hands down the best we had on the island, and I think we knew it that night. I'm STILL dreaming about the perfectly prepared ribeye I had the pleasure of having. Honestly, it was the best I've ever had! Do yourself a huge favor and check out Island View Guest House and Steakhouse. I guarantee you won't regret it. And before anyone asks, no, I was not paid or asked to say any of this; i just wanted to give this little slice of heaven a shout out!
