Its March 2014 and I have just spent my first caravan weekend of 2014 in Binion Bay Caravan Park,…read moreClonmany, Co Donegal. It was a wet, damp, and windy weekend and there were very few people on the site. It was late on Friday evening when we arrived and were welcomed by the owner who kindly placed us just beside all the site facilities. Our purpose in going to Donegal was to attend a singing festival weekend in nearby Ballyliffin. On Sat morning, the site displayed its beautiful stunning surroundings. If you like to walk, cycle, climb hills, view beaches, then this is a site you cannot miss. The friendly owner will give a total overview of the area, detailing walks, festivals, history, restaurants and anything else you will want to know. He sat with us for half an hour just to impart tourist information that he thought we might benefit from. The site facilities were very clean and tidy with free electric showers, soap and hand wash in the bathrooms. The owner had also left a supply of books available for anyone to read during their stay. Nice thought. But he really came into his own when it was time for us to go home and we found that our car electrics had a fault and would not work our caravan lights, indicators etc. When he saw us with trouble, he took his own jeep to test our caravan lights and identified that our car was the difficulty. As it was Sunday, it was not possible to repair and we had to return home for work the next day. The owner took our caravan on his jeep, parked it at his own house and we went home, repaired our car and collected the caravan some days later. All our worries were eradicated by the owners kindness. When I collected my caravan, i tried to financially reward his for his kindness but he totally refused to accept anything and said, "maybe you will come back again sometime". I sure will. I cant say enough about my stay there. These are the ones that you will remember. Keep it up Binion Bay, a gem of a weekend probably made better by kindness of the site owner.

The warmth of the welcome, the service, the views and the quality of the food is just superb. The Boathouse is just minutes away from the ferry and has a perfect position facing over a small bay with incredible views back over to the peninsula. We arrived mid afternoon and had some ice cold Peroni out on the decking overlooking the white sand beach and turquoise water. We were camping at The Boathouse - which I can highly recommend. There's quite a few pitches doted around and it's an incredibly relaxed atmosphere. Campers mingle with locals who mingle with those who have just come over for the day to eat the amazing seafood on offer. The showers and washrooms are all clean and new, with piping hot water from very early in the morning. There are washing/drying facilities and it's a brilliant half way between wild camping and a formal site - just without any fuss. Everything we needed was here and nothing was too much trouble from anyone we spoke with. If you are planning on visiting, you need to book for dinner as the place was full. Luckily we already had. We started with some oysters and then quickly ordered some more. They were cold, creamy, soft and absolutely delicious. Perfect start. After much deliberation we opted for a lobster mac 'n' cheese to start and the 'Gigha plate'. We has seen the live lobsters being brought in only an hour before and a considerable amount of one was inside the mac 'n cheese. There is no scrimping on the good stuff here. The Gigha plate consisted of deep fried halibut, quails eggs, salmon, smoked halibut, Gigha bread, oyster and the star of the show - the chef's own beetroot smoked halibut. I'd waited a long time to eat the halibut here and the beetroot smoke was just superb. Main course was the monkfish and fish curry and the pan fried halibut. Everything is cooked to perfection and the chefs inventive use of Gighas own produce of potatoes, to beetroot to fish makes it a locally sourced, excellently executed dining experience. We just amount managed to cram in a deliciously light sponge of sticky toffee pudding and peanut butter icecream - and the wonderful pecan tart with red grape ice-cream. Perfect to end to a great meal. With around 30 whiskeys to choose from I went for a Talisker to round the meal off and take a coffee outside and admire the view until bed. Wherever you are, get your map out, work out how to get there and go eat some fish and check out that view. It's worth every mile.

Those were the good days! My family and I spent many a happy Autumn, Spring, Summer and occasional Winter in our caravan here. I don't think there were many Bank Holidays we didn't take the hour long trip up the coast to our favourite campsite. It has a beautiful beach only five minutes from the site, you can catch the train to Coleraine or to Derry from lovely wee platform (yes it is lovely, it's very well kept and has flowers blooming constantly) or you could nip round the corner to The Golf Hotel (which sadly is no more) or in to the quaint basement bar of Bertha's (owned by Lord Bob himself! The local entrepreneur businessman everyone jokingly called him this!) There was so much to do, so many places to go. It's a great site for a caravan park which is quietly popular yet not tourist infested. There's all the basic facilities you would expect; clean toilets, water supply, hard standing, electric, local chippy/Chinese. Set in a beautiful location yet sadly I've heard the area is less popular after The Golf Hotel closed. I hope business picks up again and kids these days can enjoy the same brilliant fun I did growing up.
