Ever since I moved nearby, Juan Loco has always been in a weird category for me. Their food is…read moregood, I love Mexican and Tex-Mex, but their menu doesn't really pull me in. I'm really not a fan of the 5 mini tacos they offer, not because they taste bad, but more because I don't want to deal with 5 little tacos And they only sell their larger tacos in packs of 3, which is fine, but I'd actually order from here all the time if I could just order single tacos and build a custom order the way I want it (similar to Osito's or Tacos 4 Life). And their cheese dip isn't "pure" cheese dip, it has something else mixed in like a chipotle ranch or something, I really don't know, but it's not really what I'm looking for. To me the biggest issue I have is just not being able to customize my order the way I want it because the way they've designed their menu makes me not want to order anything because I don't want to commit to it. I like the a la carte style. So anyway I decided today would be my once-a-year order from Juan Loco just to see if I'm making a mistake by not ordering here more often since it's literally right down the street from me. The food was good. The menu was still a point of frustration. So it's getting 3 stars from me mainly because I'm just not compelled to order from here. I want to. I keep trying. The food is good. But it never draws me back.

Was it the best? No (that's Spanish for No). Was it the worst? No (I switched back to English). But it was good for what I needed that night. The margarita was big and strong so one was plenty. It was a little sour and fakey tasting, but it did the job. I ordered a combo meal with a bean enchilada with green sauce which really hit the spot like a dinner version of a bean and cheese. I also got a crunchy beef taco and a chicken chalupa. Both were good but both had a crispy shell. My only previous experience with a chalupa was Taco Bell's which is fried, but pillowy inside. This was downright hard... which was good, but made it difficult to eat as it was stuffed full of goodies. As with most Mexican places, I was served quickly! That meant I was back in my room sleeping in no time! I'd go here again if I was staying close, but I don't think I'd drive out of my way to go here.

If I were rating the quality of the food and pricing, we'd be looking at a solid 4-stars. That's hard to reconcile, but I'm settling on 2-stars. We were in the area for sports games and looked for a place for dinner, so of course turned to Yelp. The craving was for Mexican food and there are quite a few options in the area, but we landed on La Unica. Our group of 7 was seated within just a few minutes of arrival, and promptly brought chips and salsa. They served both a mild and a spicy salsa, and the spicy was very good. Unfortunately, the salsa was in very small bowls and we quickly ran out - No refills of salsa or chips ever happened during our visit. Looking over the menu, there is a decent selection, though we felt the prices were high for what you get (An ACP for $20 seems high compared to most places I've been.) That said, we all found something that looked good and placed our orders. Food came pretty quick, and was hot and fresh. Everyone in our group enjoyed the taste of the food ordered. Our challenges really revolve around service. From the start, our waitress was inattentive and rude. She repeatedly, and quite obviously, rolled her eyes while people asked questions and her responses were short and in a rude tone. Chips, salsa, and drinks were never refilled during the visit. After getting our food, the next time we saw her was when we got the check. When we received checks, one member pointed out that she was charged the wrong price for her Ceviche ($23 instead of the $19 listed on the menu.) The waitress told her she was wrong, then went to get a menu which.... confirmed the $19 price. The waitress then rolled her eyes again, forcefully snatched the receipt from their hand, and walked away. A few minutes later, she came back and dropped an updated receipt without saying anything. At the register, trouble continued because one of the group was charged double on her card compared to the receipt. They did correct this when pointed out, but it shouldn't be a mistake that happens in the first place. Finally, a few days after my visit I checked my bank statement and found that a tip had been added to the charge, and I certainly did not add a tip for rude service. This theft was the final straw to really seal my opinion. To the credit of management, they were prompt to refund the false tip when I reached out about it. The building itself is nice, the food is good, and while the prices are on the high end, this place really has potential to be a great restaurant. Based on other reviews, I hope our visit was a fluke with a bad service team.

Hummus is smooth and have a tahini forward flavor. My spouse and I both liked it. Tzatziki is exceptional. It is one of my favorite sauces in the world and this is great. Pita was a wonderful texture and taste wise. I ordered the chicken plate. It came out sizzling hot like fajitas traditionally do. The chicken was temperature right out of the oven, juicy and an excellent texture. Couscous on the side was beautifully cooked and had a nice touch of spice to it. The other metal bowl on my platter had a greek village style salad with diced cucumbers, diced red onions and cut in half mini tomatoes. Spouse had a Turkish pizza. The seasoning had a nice spice and kick to it. He enjoyed his meal. Spouse ordered 2 beers on draft. One of the beers was one he had before not on draft and was thrilled to try it on draft as he liked it way more. He was happy with their beer on draft selection.
