You need to call ahead to reserve your place on a tour ride, but be forewarned, there may still be issues. We called for reservations, & booked an 1.5 hr riding tour (sale price of $65 each), at 4pm...
* Try not to arrive early, as this seems to really upset the proprietor. If you're taking the public bus from Cruz Bay (as we did), it takes approx. 1/2 hr or so to get there, but believe me, it is better to be late then early, as she will most likely be running late anyway. We thought we could walk to some of the local businesses if we were early, but the businesses were a bit far from the corrals.
* The proprietor also works alone, without help, but whether you have experience with horses or not, she does Not want your help (as a few of us found out). It's best to just stay out of the way until she is ready.
* You may consider reserving the morning ride, for photo quality. We were quickly losing sunlight (making it hard to take any good photos), by the time the proprietor was finally ready for the 6 of us who were waiting (after 5pm). We returned well after dark.
* Bring your own water & mosquito repellant, as she does not have any, & if you ask, she just says, once you get on the horses & are moving, the mosquitos would go away.
* It is best to wear clothing covering your skin (for mosquitos & for dirt), as the horses were incredibly dirty & smelly, despite being brushed. The proprietor told us that she could not use the water to bathe them, as they use cisterns, & have to use water sparingly. The thing is, we were told by several people that it had been raining every single day for 2 months before we arrived, & it even rained on our 1st day there, so it just felt like she should have taken advantage of the water while it was there. Although the horses also all seemed to have issues with chipped, cracked, & splintered hooves... Where our skin was exposed, we were covered with mosquito bites, our legs were filthy, & we were all quite smelly at the end of our ride.
* The white horse, named Drake (who is very old - at least 25, if not older - & struggles to even walk), was used last minute, as the proprietor said she was not expecting as many of us as were there (though she verified we had all made reservations). Though, all of the horses are very gentle, know their path, follow each other well, they all seem very worn out.
* Be prepared to ride way up a hill at a slightly steep angle & then back down (which I'd NOT Recommend for anyone with any back or chronic pain issues). However, you will be taken to a look-out, & have a wonderful view of Hurricane Hole at the top. You will then be taken to a soccer type field & told you can canter (sort of gallop) the horses around the field, if you want to (though it seemed most of the horses were too tired). Then you will be taken down to a small marina in Coral Bay, & taken through the edge of the water, but there is one part where you cross a cement boat dock, & then suddenly plummet about 3 or 4 feet into the water (so keep your feet up).
** I wish someone had given us all of this info, but we looked online & didn't find any reviews. I hope it helps others to be more prepared.
*** On a positive note, we were told all of the animals there, were rescue animals. There was a sweet goat, a shy 3-legged sheep, a cute lil donkey, a beautiful duck, 3 very friendly, lovable dogs, some chickens & roosters, & of course the horses. read more
