They sent a technician out to assess the problem. He told me the freon was leaking, it would cost me $500 to fill with freon and labor, and that I probably needed a new unit. They charge $100 per pound for freon. A friend of mine recommended a local heating and air conditioning company, with a great reputation and reviews, he had been using for years. Their technician told me it was low on freon and suggested I fill it up and see what happens. He charged me less than $200, not $500, and it's working fine for now. They charged me $75 per pound for freon. I had both companies give me estimates to replace my Mitsubishi unit if I need to replace it. Hickory Heating and Air gave me an estimate for $9800. The other company, for the same exact Mitsubishi unit, gave me an estimate of $7500. Same exact unit, same warranty, same everything. A difference in price of 5-10% is normal with getting estimates and can be expected. A difference of 30% is excessive and gouging the customer. Needless to say, I won't be using Hickory Heating and Air again. I would suggest getting several estimates before dealing with Hickory Heating and Air.

I called these guys up and immediately was given information in regards to the service and how they go about it. The gentleman kindly quoted me a price (no hidden charges later) over phone and confirmed a time frame. Well upon his EARLY arrival, he kindly put on his blue boot booties and asked where our unit was. As he moved through our home, he offered help suggestions and even answered questions my husband and I failed to ask. He allowed me to observe his process and he even explained what he was doing and why he was doing it. When he was done, (which by the way was no where near as long as he said it would be), he told my husband and I what he did and the things he foresaw. He created a history log of the work he had done, and even added the suggestions, so when the time approaches for further service, we're already good to go. My dad does HVAC work, so I was highly impressed and will definitely be using their service in the future.
