Wow...I have a bit of a doozy story to share. The short version: we bought a car at Carmax Whitemarsh but after a few days, it wasn't working out for us. We returned it and ended up going with a different vehicle. Since I opted to use my own credit union financing for the first car, Carmax was quick to send a the refund check. What I didn't realize until weeks later was that my credit union dropped the ball and never deposited it?! As things came to light, Julian, one of the awesome store managers at Whitemarsh, suggested we have a three-way call with my credit union and Carmax to iron out the details and get everything letter perfect so that they could issue a 2nd refund check--which finaly got applied to my account last night! Sad to see so many poor reviews of the White Marsh Carmax. My experience was perfect from start to finish. I had the car I wanted shipped and it arrived right on time. I purchased the car without selling my old car because I had a better offer but that fell through and they redid all the paperwork for me so I could get the tax write off. My sales associate, Daniel Macias, could not have been kinder or more helpful. I appreciate that there was never any pressure or need for haggling. I love my new car! It wasn't cheap but is low mileage, well cared for and thousands less than new. My first used car but in this economy it is truly the way to go and Carmax is the best place to look! Also, if you aren't going to have time to thoroughly test a car even as it was getting towards closing, don't allow for appointments to be scheduled. I wouldn't have scheduled an 8:30 pm appointment if you wouldn't take me until 8:45 and allow me a less than 10 minutes test drive. Just ridiculous. 8:30 was the only appointment you had left in the afternoon of that day. I've been to other CarMax locations, and they bend over backward to help and assist. I am very satisfied with my experience at this Carmax location. I went in to get a quote on selling my car so I can buy a new SUV. While waiting I walked around the lot with a salesman and my husband looking at the SUV's they had in stock close to what I was looking for. They had some really nice used vehicles with low mileage and with all the bells and whistles. Only problem, they are the same price or higher than a new vehicles. Had they been closer in price I may have thought of buying a Lexus or Toyota I found. When we first walked in they had alot of people in the place for 2pm on a Monday. We gave our name and were immediately called over to an appraisal specialist. He was extremely helpful (Joe). He told me it would be about 30 min to get an official offer in writing. Thats when we walked around the lot looking at other vehicles. The written offer is good for 7 days only then it must be appraised again. Their offer was fair. I would have preferred a little more but in todays auto buying/selling climate it wasnt worth the discussion. Normally I would have negotiated for more since theyre going to sell it for double what I was paid for the car. I'm also so excited to get a newer hybrid SUV that it just didn't matter and Joe who assisted us was so helpful I wasn't going to ruin his day. Spread happiness to as many people as possible this year and see how many places I can pay it forward for people and show there are good people in the world and paying someones bill is just one way I'm spreading CHEER ALL YEAR! I hope my idea catches on with other people as I go around the USA doing this exciting adventure. I check my email every half hour for 8 days. When the car was available, I got an email stating it was ready. I was first to accept the offer for a test drive or transfer. Avoid! They breached our delivery date contract. We needed a car asap when we lost ours, and unfortunately ended up using CARMAX. My daughter is unfortunately going through some serious medical issues. We were promised to have the car we ordered on a Tuesday by that Sunday at the latest. My daughter has a critical appointment set for the following Monday. Thursday we received notice that the car had arrived at our pick up point the White Marsh MD., CarMax. It's Saturday, my husband who leaves to work out of the state tomorrow, called the White Marsh CarMax dealership to ask the car's status, and was told the windshield was cracked, and the car wont be ready until Tuesday now! We all know it takes less than 2 hours to replace a windshield on a car. A car that they've had since Thursday! My husband explained our daughter emergent medical needs and appointment on Monday only to be met with the asshole line of, well if you need a car sooner you can buy one that's ready from our lot today! Are you kidding me? Then they told him their service center is closed today, no chance of getting a new windshield installed, and furthermore, they are closed on Sunday's. Basically, too bad. NEVER, EVER AGAIN! I will NEVER buy from CarMax and will make sure no one I know will buy from CarMax and be put through having to deal with their incompetence, lack of professionalism, and misleading delivery term promises. Complete waste of time and money. I was told I was approved for a vehicle. I was so excited because I totaled my car a year ago I went through a lot of other things and now I'm just putting my life back together. I paid for shipping for the vehicle and I purchased car insurance because THEY TOLD ME I WAS APPROVED. I had all of my documents uploaded 2 WEEKS EARLY only for them to tell me (days before I am to pick up the vehicle) that I need to provide my personal bank statements. I was referred by a white colleague who makes the same money I make and has a worse credit score than me and she was not required to provide her personal bank statements. I believe I was racially profiled. I could not be more hurt by my experience. I would never recommend carmax to anyone. No money should have been taken from me if I wasn't fully approved. CarMax is not the greatest but it's also not the worst. The pros: No haggling on selling or buying. I found the salesperson very warm and kind. I think I got a great car. Goldenberg's Peanut Chews in the vending machine! Clean restrooms. The cons: Don't get financing through CarMax-- it is double the rate of your local bank or credit union. They low-balled my trade-in, while the car I bought had an inflated bluebook value. Car Max made money on both deals. I got into my new car only to find that I had 1/4 tank of gas. My trade-in had a full tank. It just didn't feel right. I have no idea when my car's oil was last changed. The interior of my car was not cleaned. It took hours to make the deal because of a lack of managers and/or staff. read more

Do not use this location. Use Gaithersburgh (trust me its worth the drive) We transfered a vehichle to the white marsh location and it failed inspection for a "rock chip". Then they didnt have the title? (it was a transfer from Potomac Village where it was ready for sale--- so how can they not have the title?) A week later they still havent replaced the windshield and have no available insights as to the delay... The departments do not share information. So I spent hours on hold, bouncing between departments and being given different information each time. While this is all happening the purchase of the vehichle I am trading in is about to hit my score which will drop my points so low ill be forced into a higher APR all because of a "window chip". Went to Carmax to get our car appraised this morning and when we walked in we were treated by a nice man who took us to a jerk of a salesman. The first guy said to Joe these people would like an appraisal, Joe said well are they buying and that was right in front of us. The first guy said I don't know, Joe responded with a loud huff. We sat down at Joes desk, gave him some info and he said it will be a half hour, you can look around out front while you wait. We sat back down at his desk after a quick look. He returned and put the appraisal down and I said that's about a 1000 off. He then without even making eye contact said thanks for coming in and walked away to another customer. I don't think this is Carmax in general because we heard many other nice individuals treating customers well. What a let down, you should be watching your employees Carmax. read more

Horrible experience. They sold me a vehicle that immediately needed repairs (took it to a mechanic for check over the next day) but CarMax did do these repairs. However, it needed the same repairs within 1.5 years (very expensive ones). After many phone calls CarMax did assign a person to help with warranty repairs and issues but the problem is they assigned 2 different people and the constant phone calls with both people on my case got very time consuming and caused a great deal of missed work. Then it needed a transmission which was a whole ordeal with the warranty company and the two different points of contact. Then I tried to trade in this vehicle and the next car they tried to sell me I took to a mechanic prior to buying it. The mechanic said the rotors were very rusted and the entire bottom of the car was rusted. And the radiator was cracked and needed to be replaced. I left and will never go back. The next place I went to (Honda) has Certified Preowned Vehicles which means it has been reconditioned to factory standards. Do not go to CarMax. read more

The pros- they have a huge selection of used cars, it's fast and really is hassle free. I've bought a few cars in my time new and used and dealerships are slow. The cons-the sales staff are like buying a tv at Best Buy, they are so not involved, test drive let's see if you can afford it, I guess some people like that. If there is anything wrong with it don't buy it or turn it in 7 days. The service appointments are so backed up you won't get an appointment within 30 days. If you love the car and want it fixed they are pretty stuck on just turn it in and find another. Overall a 5 out of 10 experience. Not good not bad. read more

My husband and I went there about a month ago and purchased a car. Our car salesman was GREAT. He was extremely patient and spoke with us very honestly about the costs and financing options. Everything was wonderful until we were passed off to the business office. They were busy and we waited 30 mins until our paperwork came out. We went through it all and asked about tags and registration and were told they couldn't process it as we lived in DC. A few days later, we got a call from their tags person asking if we wanted to add it to our order. We said yes and that we wished we had been told it was option while we were there so that we didn't have to drive another 2 hours to reprocess. We made the drive and were there for nearly 5 hours! I'm not exaggerating. We got there at 5pm and left a little after 9pm. They returned our car and redid our contract three times. The salesman who we originally had and was amazing had left by this point so we were passed off to the next person. They promised everything was sorted and we would receive the tags in the mail. Well, yesterday I got a call from the tags person AGAIN saying the needed me to go get the car inspected and show them that before they could process it. It's been a month and no one thought to call to tell me? Also, while I was there I asked if there was anything else we had to do and they said "nope". Between choosing the car, driving there twice, refiling paperwork, and sitting in the DC inspection line we've spent 12 hours for this car buying process. I don't think we'll come here to purchase our next car. They could greatly improve by ensuring everyone in the business office has the same information OR the integrity to say they don't know. read more

The absolute best place to go for a used car. I have owned eight cars in my life. I purchased the last two from Carmax. I got an Accord there last September and traded up to a nicer, newer version last week. I had used their website feature to track what I wanted and got an email when it came into the inventory. This is a clean, bright smooth operation. I think there are probably some caveats to throw in. This may not be the best place for you if you are wishy-washy, need a lot of hand holding or want to bargain. ( Why bother, you just get the illusion of beating the dealer anyway...ever...regardless of how many really scary loud blonds promise in her commercial that she will give you the best price- and then haunt your dreams as a spectral dead eyed ghost). Who am I kidding I'd date her---I'm so alone right now; and she might let me drive a corvette free--- But Carmax is a great place for the informed buyer, who has done their homework elsewhere and is not afraid of the "factory" atmosphere. They literally reserved our car and offered to transport it to a closer location for us and sent emails and texts confirming it was reserved and was on its way to the closer location. Well, on the day it was promised it would show up, it never showed. So after several calls to the closer location and to White Marsh they finally revealed they sold the car from under us On the same day it was reserved for us. 9/25/14 Wanted to get my car appraised to see what they would offer me if I decide to sell her. Mike was at the door when I arrived and greeted me immediately once I walked in. He asked if I was being helped and what I was coming in for. He immediately took care of getting the appraisal process started. Once I was entered into the computer he took me over to the waiting area. I sat and played on my ipad and phone in the interim. He came about 15 mins later to give me an update that they were wrapping things up and I should be done soon. 10 minutes later he came over with the offer and his business card and told me to give him a call once I decide what I want to do. If I could give negative stars I would. I purchased a car in 2018. And since purchasing I've told this location on multiple occasions there's An issue going on with my TRANSMISSION.. a few weeks after it was back in the shop for a period of time and I was led to believe the issue was "fixed"...called back Atleast 60 times from then to 2020 about my lights coming on and the codes I had. They assured me it wasn't anything to worry about and maybe it was from the cold and I had to let my car warm up... in 2020 finally before Covid happened they scheduled me to bring in my vehicle for tapping, awd and check engine light on and transmission check. 2 hours I waited for them to even service my apt, 30 minutes maybe went by and they said I was finished and the problem was fixed. Didn't get a physical copy of what they even did. They told me that I'll be emailed with a copy and never was. Called back asking about it and they said it was notated in their systems so I wouldn't have any issues in the future. Today after being flipped around from person to person the woman at the store tells me that I was brought into their shop in 2020 under false pretenses for my transmission being checked and in fact they checked my muffler when that wasn't the issue. Gary in the service department so cavalier, smug and unprofessional tells me oh well it's not his problem, corporate will have to fix THEIR stores negligence. And hung up. I spoke with corporate in reference and I'm still awaiting a resolution. Bc my mileage now in 2023 is past the warranty, despite me buying an extended warranty,they are trying to say I will have to pay for a transmission.. WHEN THEY NEGLECTED FOR OVER 3 years to fix this ongoing issue. AND THEY REFUSE TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR NEGLECT!! Proceed with caution when it comes to servicing here at this location and watch what they give you, tell you and have you sign.
