I had a great experience selling my 2008 Toyota Rav4 and buying a new 2014 Nissan Rogue SV from CarMax. I saw the car I wanted on their website and requested a "hold" on the Rogue so I could come in and test drive the vehicle. Before the end of the same day, a sales consultant contacted me (Steve Fogle) to confirm my appointment and to contact him if I had any questions in the meantime. I arrived that Friday morning and was punctually greeted by Steve who was waiting for me by the front desk. I informed him that in addition to test driving the Rogue, I also wanted my Rav4 appraised for a potential trade-in. He input my information in the computer so the Appraiser could look over my vehicle while we were out test driving the Rogue. By the time we came back (15 minutes or so), the appraisal was already completed. The appraisal came out $2K more than what I expected based on online research. I think it helped that I had detailed records (to include receipts) of all of the maintenance that was performed on the Rav4. Steve was such a pleasure to work with. He was professional, courteous, and knowledgeable. He took the time to answer all of my questions (and I had plenty) explaining the entire process in detail to make sure I understood everything. If I could give negative stars I would. I purchased a car in 2018. And since purchasing I've told this location on multiple occasions there's An issue going on with my TRANSMISSION.. a few weeks after it was back in the shop for a period of time and I was led to believe the issue was "fixed"...called back Atleast 60 times from then to 2020 about my lights coming on and the codes I had. They assured me it wasn't anything to worry about and maybe it was from the cold and I had to let my car warm up... in 2020 finally before Covid happened they scheduled me to bring in my vehicle for tapping, awd and check engine light on and transmission check. 2 hours I waited for them to even service my apt, 30 minutes maybe went by and they said I was finished and the problem was fixed. Didn't get a physical copy of what they even did. They told me that I'll be emailed with a copy and never was. Called back asking about it and they said it was notated in their systems so I wouldn't have any issues in the future. Today after being flipped around from person to person the woman at the store tells me that I was brought into their shop in 2020 under false pretenses for my transmission being checked and in fact they checked my muffler when that wasn't the issue. Gary in the service department so cavalier, smug and unprofessional tells me oh well it's not his problem, corporate will have to fix THEIR stores negligence. And hung up. I spoke with corporate in reference and I'm still awaiting a resolution. Bc my mileage now in 2023 is past the warranty, despite me buying an extended warranty,they are trying to say I will have to pay for a transmission.. WHEN THEY NEGLECTED FOR OVER 3 years to fix this ongoing issue. AND THEY REFUSE TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR NEGLECT!! Proceed with caution when it comes to servicing here at this location and watch what they give you, tell you and have you sign. All they've given us were lies, the inability to do their jobs properly and to take ownership that their employees dropped the ball big time. I have had to return my car 4 different times now for an issues they created! My car was there for cosmetic issues and they patched a hole in my tire. When I picked my car up the entire thing shook uncontrollably. I took my car back a second time, they decided to replace both front tires. Long story short after they finally decided to listen to my concerns, I was told my tires were originally put back on incorrectly which caused the shaking!! My actual wheel and Rotars needed to be replaced! They had me driving an unsafe vehicle with my children because they are lazy and incompetent. When I would leave messages they would almost never return my call, I am always the one calling for an update. The people who answer the phones in the service department are rude and complain about customers very openly. This has been the absolute WORST experience of my life! I found a car of interest, and requested that it be delivered to my local CARMAX. I received an email confirmation, and the next day I got a text asking me what would be a good time for them to call. I said anytime. I never heard from them after that, so I called several times and was on hold for 40 minutes. I emailed and got no response. I finally reached someone 6 days later, and was told the car is no longer available. I had submitted pictures to trade in a car and got a response in several minutes, so that part was good, but we were very disappointed that the car we expressed interest in was not reserved for us as promised. In the past, I've purchased two vehicles from CarMax with no issues. Yesterday, I had a terrible experience. The salesman was wonderful. The sales manager was terrible. I requested that a car be moved from Harrisburg to their Baltimore dealership. This was done. I went on Saturday to test drive it and agreed to buy it. An appraisal was done of my present car and the trade in amount was determined. Yesterday, I spent much of my day gathering the financing, insurance, which included two trips to the bank (extended lunch period, short day at work) so I could make the appointment at Carmax at 5:30 p.m. When I got there, they informed me that they would be taking my car for a drive. When they came back, they said they had found something wrong and they lowered the trade in amount - clearly a BAIT & SWITCH. All the paperwork was completed and signed and the check was cut - based on their original appraisal. The hours of effort my insurance agent, my banking rep and I put toward getting the paperwork ready for this car was a complete waste of time, let alone the fact that the very nice sales person lost his commission. The sales manager said it's a corporate rule that they wait until the sale is almost finished to do the drive. Insane. I want to start by saying that the car buying process was relatively painless. Every other part of the process was agonizing. I went to CarMax specifically because of the titling and registration system available on-site. They failed to title or register my new car which was paid in full, and never gave me the proper paperwork in order to do so through the DMV. Over a month later, I had to call and complain about receiving the paperwork. A week longer and I would've been trapped into disobeying the laws of legal vehicle registration. Shortly after purchasing the vehicle, I realized one of the speakers was blown out. I told them when purchasing that audio was very important to me, for both bluetooth and music. Nobody alerted me about the faulty speaker. Voices through bluetooth are distorted and extremely quiet, and I can only play music out of the left side speakers. So I drove 75 miles back during the remaining warranty period to get it repaired. They messed up my appointment times, had no technicians available, made me wait for an excessive amount of hours every time and ultimately fixed nothing. They actually broke my USB port in the process. One of the employees obviously took advantage of my frustration and consistant contact with the business in an attempt to be flirtatious and ultimately came off quite predatory. So I returned 3 times, 150 miles round-trip again and again, forced to work with a different employee every time to try and fix it all. I lost tons of time and money for gas, and was forced into utilizing unpaid sick days to spend hours on end waiting for pointless "inspections." I never thought I'd buy a car from CarMax. I always assumed they did not offer competitive deals, were over-priced, and besides, I am not a fan of no-negotiation. I actually like to deal with car sales-people to see what I can get. It helps me judge what kind of dealership they are by discovering what they will say to make a sale. There is nothing better than walking out of a shady dealership when you catch them in a big, fat lie, which happens all-too-frequently. SO we looked at a few models at several dealerships and were kind of at a loss as to what we were going to buy. That's not a good way to be. On the way home, we stopped by the White Marsh CarMax just to see what they had with little to no intention of buying a car.... just wanted to see what they had. We were introduced to Yong He, explained what we were looking for, and he said, "I'm going to get you into a vehicle today." Doubtful. Looking around the local area, the vehicle brand and model with low mileage that we wanted was too expensive, the ones that fit our price range did not have the features we required or had too many miles. Yong suggested several vehicles that he had on the lot, and we found a 2017 model we liked with 7000 miles on it that fit our budget. CarMax was very competitive with our trade-in. We told him we would let him know the next day. He was disappointed at not making the sale that day, but we felt the need to do the research and homework on the deal before we pulled the trigger. He placed a 7-day hold on the vehicle and thanked us for our business. I promised him I'd let him know one way or another. We bought the car the next day. I'm impressed with the way the sale went and Yong was an excellent salesman. In all fairness, the only flaw in the whole deal was that we had asked for an oil change before we took delivery. Yong checked with management and he told us that they changed the oil on every vehicle they received before it was sold. However, the CarFax showed that the oil had not been changed in 4700 miles. OK, maybe there was a communication problem somewhere. No matter, I'd rather make sure the oil change was done correctly, so I changed the oil myself the next day. It definitely needed to be changed. Mechanically the car clearly wasn't checked out although it had the CarMax quality check sticker Broken tag light lens and bulb is out front brakes have horrible high spots in the rotors There is something loose in the passenger side front end. The car clearly was not MD inspected or checked. I have now called the CarMax service department 3 times with no return call. RIPE OFF! So disappointed... White Marsh CarMax has given the brand an unfortunate stain. We purchased a Fiat with the warranty. Had an issue made an appointment through the Carmax App. Carmax uses third party vendors.. which is great... supporting local businesses. However... when you arrive for your CARMAX scheduled appointment... the local shop is unable to get in touch with a Carmax to verify your warranty and fix your vehicle. Therefore... my daughter took off work on a Saturday... she had a scheduled appointment through the CARMAX app for two weeks. Dropped her car off timely. the shop was unable to fix her car because the shop could not get in touch with CARMAX. After three hours of trying to get this corrected... we were told WHITE MARSH is a high volume store and no one could get this corrected until Monday. Therefore... you are only a concern when you purchase, however after that the promise of efficient effective service is no more. I find the behavior we experienced equates to a con. Being sold a vehicle with guarantees for which you purchase yet backed by emptiness and avoidance. Very disappointed! read more

I requested vehicle to be transferred to this location which arrived in a timely manner. I received a call from Carlton Farrington stating the car had arrived. I went in to look at car which for the most part appeared to be in good condition with the exception of a few minor details. I had previously paid for a CARFAX report as CarMax provides limited details. This is an investment so I didn't mind. I knew exactly what to look for as it related to inspecting the car. I informed Carlton I had concerns and he immediately said " I can tell you their not going to fix it". He then proceeded to ask if I wanted to test drive the car. In addition he couldn't answer basic questions pertaining to the car. As a salesman you should know what your selling. Simple things like last the lug but key in the vehicle. Not " I mean I don't work for Mercedes". What an idiot. First and foremost what kind of salesman doesn't immediately try and address your concerns. I've purchased a vehicle previously in Ellicott city and quite a different experience as there were issues and the salesman immediately addressed my concerns. He talked to the manager right away and he got the deal done. After I told him I wasn't interested he then said "well I can try and talk to management". He then proceeded to drive the vehicle back where he got it from on the lot. I was left standing in the cold for at least 10 minutes. I most certainly wasn't going to give my business to this guy. I proceeded to leave. Shortly after I received a text asking if I was still on the premises. Then a phone call in which I didn't answer. I should have gone back to Ellicott City. This was my first purchase from Carmax. I went on line found the car I wanted and with the help of Felix (salesperson) the vehicle was transferred to the Whitemarsh location inspected and ready for me in about a week and a half which is what I was told up front. I came down to Carmax knocked out all the paperwork test drive etc in about an hour and 20 min. Thanks to Carmax I have a great new looking vehicle with less than 10,000 miles at a great price. Two words: Joe Jourdan. He is awesome! I went to CarMax to make my first car purchase and I could not be happier. After filling out a credit application online about a month ago, Joe called as soon as the office opened that Monday to tell me that I was approved for financing. Unfortunately, I had a situation come up that cost me the money that I had set aside for a down payment. Joe was super understanding of that and made sure to keep in touch without being pushy. Fast-forward to four weeks later and I finally had the money for a down payment so I scheduled a Saturday morning appointment with Joe. I came with my mother and my grandmother and Joe was accommodating to each of us. He sat with me to discuss car options (CR-V, RAV4, or Cherokee) that I was interested in. He was very knowledgeable of each vehicle and after conversing with him, I decided to focus on just the CR-V and RAV4. In a short while, we were outside looking at cars on the lot. Joe had to do an appraisal so he took care of another customer for about 10 minutes which was okay with me. Once he was back, he showed us all of the CR-V and RAV4 options on the lot. I settled on two cars and we took them off the lot. Both were smooth, but I loved the CR-V more than the RAV4. I chose the CR-V and we went back inside to do the paperwork. Joe was very personable and patient the entire time. He even gave away a customer to another rep. so that he could continue to help me finish the buying process. I was in and out in 2.5 hours. I owned a 2007 Suzuki XL7 with less than 60,000 miles. On Friday, November 10, 2017 my car suddenly starts making a horrible noise. I took it to Auto Stream Car Care Center on Smith Avenue the next day because it was close and I didn't want to drive my car any long distances. I was told that the power steering hose leaked and there were metal shavings throughout the system and the repair would be $2100.00. After some research I learned that my car was known for having power steering issues. I told this to Gary from Auto Stream and he assured me that my car had no other issues and that he recommended me having the repair done. On Monday, November 13, 2017 I called my regular mechanic Kenny from Adams Auto Company. Kenny's estimate was $600 cheaper but he recommended that I not get the car fixed because Suzukis are no longer being made in the US so parts are hard to come by and expensive. When I picked my car up from Auto Stream the estimate had an additional $3700 worth of work that was recommended to be done immediately. I checked the Carmax website for a vehicle that was comparable to what I had. I requested the shipment of a Chevy Traverse. It was available for me to test drive on Wednesday, November 15th, which I did while my car was being appraised. The car drove fine but I was hesitant to buy a Chevrolet because of the problems my son and a co-worker had with theirs. I explained this to Eddy Lingue, my sales associate, and he suggested I test drive a Toyota Highlander and a Nissan Pathfinder, which I did. I still couldn't decide so Eddy emailed me a link to all of the cars I was interested in and told me to let him know what I had decided. I went home and looked over all of the cars several times then decided on the Nissan Pathfinder. It was newer with fewer miles for about the same cost. I went to the Carmax website and put the pathfinder on hold and scheduled an appointment with Eddy for Saturday, November 18th. I sold my car, got the Pathfinder and I could not be happier. This is not the first car I purchased with Carmax and will probably not be the last. read more

Bought a Lexus IS 250. I was set on the exact car I wanted knowing it was difficult to find. Salesman knew nothing about the car and pretty much smiled and nodded at every question and comment we tossed his way. Salesman said that according to company policy, all prices are non-negotiable. Which is a lie, because not our first purchase at Carmax. He snuck extended warranty to our bill when we did not want it. I noticed it was added as I was signing papers and asked that it be removed. He also claimed the selling price was final including all the extra fees. False. Drove home with the car. Airbag light turned on. Window made cranking noise. And no sound from the speakers. Taking it to service was hell in its own. Too nearly 2 hours to simply drop off car at service. They tried to give us a giant boat sized old Chevy Malibu to drive in the city with. Had to wait days for Lexus to show up and check it out because of the untouchable oem parts. Carmax not certified in this area. After getting the car back, service man was almost dead in the ears, and claimed he couldn't hear anything from the windows. When other service people finally heard the noise they claimed that how the Lexus window sounds. (Just the "one" window) After admitting that it sounded broken, a few days passed to order parts and reinstall. Had to once again drive out to wait for a service claimed to take no more than an hour. Not true. (Bring a book) Finally the car is home. And I love it. Almost 3 months later, the sound is yet again silent. Just called Carmaxx to get an appointment to "have it looked at". Receptionist can't answer any question but send customers to voicemails of people that can answer questions. And that is where I stand today. To be continued read more

I went here today to get an appraisal on my car because I have been thinking about selling it to buy something else. I did research beforehand looking at comparable cars on the market and kelly bluebook. My car is in awesome condition with tons of upgrades and very recent brakes/rotors/tires. They have the same exact vehicle as mine for sale at their Virginia location for $16,900- same color, trim, mileage, everything! Also, they only have a few in their inventory so I knew they weren't flooded with my make/model. So, I was pretty confident it would be a reasonable offer. They came back with a flat $12,000. They base their offer on what they pay for the cars at auction. I wonder if the offer would have been better if I had shown interest in buying a car there. Waste of time overall. read more

I was a return customer, and wanted to trade in my car(that I had purchased at Carmax) for a brand new car. The appraisal came back more than 2,000 dollars under kelly blue book value. They refused to budge on the price of the new car I wanted to buy or my appraisal. I then went to Koons Chevy, who offered me above kelly blue book value for my car, and were willing to haggle on the price of the new car. Since 2011, I have purchased 3 vehicles from Carmax of White Marsh. I have watched their customer service decline dramatically, you can not schedule vehicle service in a timely manner (wait is always a month). They have change their policy pertaining to their warranty, to make it so that they do not cover a vehicle equal to that of the buyer )thus forcing you not only to pay your deductible but also paying out of your pocket to cover the extra expense for a vehicle equal to that of the one you drive)! I have a 2016 Acadia that I purchased in April of 2019 and it has been in one of their approved repair shops now 3 times and still isn't fixed correctly. Then every time I take it in to be repaired, the warrant company wants to ask questions about my mileage, frankly it's none of your darn business! I purchased the vehicle, I paid for an extended warranty, do your job, repair my vehicle and cover what's expected to be covered! Sold a vehicle here: We had decided to sell one of our vehicles that we were still making payments on (goal is to become debt free). Anyways, we told ourselves that our absolute last resort would be Carmax. We went the Craigslist route because we have sold a vehicle via that site with success a few years prior but it was a much cheaper vehicle -- easier to sell on a site like that one. We still owed on this new vehicle we were attempting to sell & we were really just trying to break even. After a few weeks, my brother had suggested to just give Carmax a try since their offer is good for an entire 7 days. Seemed reasonable enough. So we took our vehicle there & to be honest, I was quite nervous because I KNEW they would give us a low ball offer. I just knew they would & was ready for the confrontation. A young man approached us & took us back into an office to ask us a few general questions. After only 30 minutes of waiting while the appraiser looked over our truck, they came back with the offer. We were pleasantly surprised to hear that the offer was more than we were looking for. KBB & way above the amount we owed. I really wanted to jump up & down with excitement but was able to hold it in. We returned a few days later accepting their offer. They sent our bank a check to pay off the vehicle & cut us a check for the difference. It was so simple & stress free. I would definitely consider Carmax if I ever needed to sell a vehicle of that price range. There is no negotiation at Carmax -- it's just how they do things here. You can't negotiate the offer and you can't negotiate the price of a vehicle you're trying to purchase. And while we walked the lot waiting for the appraiser, it did seem like their vehicles were on the higher end of what they may have been worth. We knew right away that we wouldn't be purchasing a car through them but selling a vehicle to them was a great decision for our particular situation. Now, if you're trying to sell a vehicle that is worth $9000 or less, I would probably stick with selling it privately. If you're willing to filter through the bs & weirdos you are guaranteed to encounter via Craigslist or a similar site, then I would give that a try because there is a plethora of people looking to purchase a vehicle in that price range... cash read more

The process is easy, I find the prices reasonable, the selection is pretty vast and Reid is very helpful and knowledgeable and doesn't give off any of that "shady" feel that I've had at previous car dealerships (which is why I have purchased me last three cars from Carmax). I cannot say enough about how easy and straight forward the purchasing part of my experience has been. I can easily and without hesitation recommend purchasing a car here. The "Service" Department, however, has been anything but delightful. My experience with them has been 180 degrees different than my experience with the Sales Group. We purchased our third car from CarMax on 04/21/18. On 04/23/18, the first time it was driven other than home from the dealership, it was immediately evident that the car pulls to the left significantly and it was shimmying at highway speeds. Additionally, the tires were all below recommended pressure (by several PSI) and one was giving a low pressure warning and would not hold pressure when we filled it. We immediately called in to the Service Department on Monday. To my surprise, the one option was to leave a voicemail (this was during their business hours). I left one. I received no call back. On Tuesday, I called twice more and twice more left voicemail messages. Again, no call back. On Wednesday, already extremely irritated, I contacted the Sales Desk and let them know that while Carmax was very quick to sell me this car, I could not even get a return call from their so called Service Department. The woman I spoke to was great. In another testament to how good the Sales Group is, she apologized and let me know she was not going to transfer me but would put me on hold and walk over there to find someone in Service and send me directly to them. She transferred me to Adrial Osorio in Service. Adrial let me know that he could "fit me in" on Monday, 04/30/18. Since I'd been calling since two days after purchasing the car (started calling 04/23/18), I let him know this was not acceptable for me. I had a rental car through today (Saturday, 04/28/18) and that I could leave the car all day on Thursday (04/26) or Friday (04/27) but waiting until Monday (04/30) was not an option. Adrial then let me know he would do me the favor of "squeezing me in" on Thursday, 04/26. We dropped the car off on Wednesday evening. Thursday morning, I received a call saying they were taking my car back for service and would "contact me shortly" to let me know what they found. Imagine my surprise when I received no call back AGAIN. I had to drive to Carmax at 3pm on Thursday afternoon and check on the status of my car in person. The car was done but there was no reason given as to why they hadn't called me to let me know. They claim to have aligned the car to correct the leftward pull and to have balanced all four tires. (I received no alignment printout showing calculations which I've always gotten from every other mechanic I've used over the years), balanced the tires and replaced a valve stem on the tire that wouldn't hold pressure. The car still pulls left as hard as it did before service and this was noted when pulling off the lot with it on Friday morning when we picked it up. I called them on Friday when I got to work and, big surprise, got the voicemail vacuum again. I'm writing this review at 4:40pm on Saturday and have not received a call back in response to that voicemail message. On the upside, it doesn't shimmy at highway speed so they seem to have managed to balance the tires. I am beyond frustration at this point. I have emailed their "social care" customer service inbox for what that's worth. I am not optimistic. I am paying thirty grand for this car - I expect at a very minimum for it to drive in a straight line! It pulls to the left so hard that you have to counter steer to the right to keep it from drifting into oncoming traffic. This wasn't noticed during the test drive because, frankly, one does not take one's hands off the wheel or drive at top speed during a test drive. We also test drove on surface streets in heavy traffic so there would be no opportunity to allow drifting unless we wished to drift right into an accident. I have reached out to Customer Service at Carmax and emailed the person listed as the GM at that location. I won't be holding my breath to get a call but if this car is not fixed on Monday, I will file a complaint with the BBB and contact an attorney. I have a 30 day warranty and a car with a significant mechanical issue. I'm sure they will call me very promptly if I neglected to send that first car payment in but I can't even get a response to repeated calls to their SERVICE (not so much) Department. I am beyond disgusted. read more

Irritating! I bought a car on 11/15/17 and one week later the 'low tire light' displays and the 'need an oil change' light displays. Why couldn't CarMax have taken care of that before I bought the car. read more

I love Carmax! They offer a huge variety of cars and great prices. I went to a Honda dealership just to ask about how leasing works, three hours later I wrote a check to hold a car I was considering buying. By the time I got home I was so angry at myself for falling victim to high pressure sales, geeeeesh! I was so mad at myself. I hate high pressure sales, I hate knowing that I have to negotiate a price, especially since I am not a car person. I got that money back from the dealer the next day, I went to several Carmax stores, (all of which were impressive) and I played around on the Carmax website. I bought my car without having to negotiate or having to deal with any pressure from the salesman, I am very happy with the car and feel like I got a great deal! read more

Buyer beware! Purchase a car from CarMax, White Marsh on 4/16/14 with a written agreement for CarMax to reimburse me, the buyer, the amount of $215 for transmission service at a Mercedes dealership, which CarMax was unable to perform. CarMax has failed to reimburse the money even though written documentation exists and proof of performance was submitted on 4/16/14. Twelve weeks later, still waiting for reimbursement. Assistant Service Manager no longer answers emails or returns calls to me. This dealership will do anything to sell you a car, yet has no intention to back up their commitments with appropriate action. Please shop elsewhere, you can certainly do better. read more

I've sold around 10 cars to carmax in the past 15 years. They would always pay high prices, comparable to kbb prices. In the past 2 months I've taken 2 vehicles to carmax. Both appraisals were much lower than the kbb trade in value. One vehicle I took next door to Koons Chevrolet, they paid $3000 more than carmax on a $16000 vehicle. . I will not go back to carmax. They are no longer paying good prices. Definitely get another appraisal elsewhere, it will more than likely be higher. Carmax appraiser said they go by car auction prices even on perfect late model vehicles that they would definitely not auction. FYI, their used car prices are also very high compared to other dealers. read more
