I've dealt with CarMax over the years; however, this CarMax is completely low ball on purchase of vehicles. Not sure if it's intensional or lack of experience from their estimators. Second positive experience. I had totaled a car in the summer and quickly bought a replacement, which I was happy with. After having some more time to research exactly the car I wanted, I traded in my vehicle. I was given more than I expected for the appraisal. I ordered the new vehicle from CA and it arrived when expected and in the expected condition. As usual, I was in and out in about 2 hours. (I had made an appointment, of course.) Being able to select the exact vehicle I wanted was a plus; no having to settle on details like interior or exterior color, as people often do. Finally, I had the vehicle inspected during the 7 day return window at a Toyota dealership, just to be safe. They found no issues and so the sale will be final. So I paid to have a car transferred to south lo Lindbergh location waited an waited for it to come in, they said come in with your car and we will get the offer on your car going. So I get there the guy I was dealing with and scheduled the appointment wasn't there and would be there for 1-2 hrs after my the appointment that he set up. So as you can imagine I was not a happy camper having to deal with someone new and had no idea what I was there for, but the worst was to come when they low balled me so bad on my cars worth , when I had already had offer for 3-4 grand above theirs, I was fuming. The estimater said he found nothing wrong with my vehicle yet they weren't will to pay for it. So I walked out and still never heard from them about the car I had transferred. I finally called to see what was taking so long and they told me it had arrived, I asked why no one there could pickup the phone and let me know, but all I got were excuses. Then to top that off they had sent it out to have the windshield replaced and it wouldn't be back for another week. So really folks the moral of this story is if you're looking for a vehicle stay away from this car max location. I ended up not taking the vehicle over all this poor service. read more

Went to sell my car, wasted several hours of my day with driving there and back. Didn't take long to get an appraisal. I didn't want to mess with listing car on Social media. They offered me about 8% of Blue book value. No my car was not in perfect condition. I got home made one call and sold it for 3 times they offered me. This place is brand new! The CarMax company just broke into the St. Louis market this fall which is HUGE for them and St. Louis (they have this branch and the one in St. Peters). We went one night shortly after they opened to try to sell my old car since I got a new more awesome car and was having issues selling the old one on Craiglist. We were very impressed with building itself and the staff inside. Since the building is new it obviously looks very nice and has pretty good lighting. It is very spacious and open. We were greeted upon arrival and asked what we were interested in (selling a car or buying a new one). Obviously we wanted to get an appraisal to sell my old car. We checked in and sat in some chairs in a waiting area nearby. If you're hungry or thirsty they have a water fountain or some vending machines. It'd be cooler if they offered like a Keurig and some coffees or some fruit snacks like the Audi dealer or the Valvoline Oil Place did. But, at least they have a vending machine! :) We were finally greeted by our appraiser who went over how the process works, what they look for, what to expect, ect. Basically they take your car for 15 minutes or so and look over everything on the outside and inside of the car according to a checklist that they have. Then depending on the miles on your car they take it for a test drive. Since mine had 95,000 miles they had to test drive my car (which is about 1 mile or so). Then they come back and go over everything with you and give you an offer. This offer is good for 7 days. At that point you can either sell it before 7 days or if it's after get it reappraised. They come up with the number they offer you by comparing your car against their database of cars up for auction at their company and another large auction house company. It compares your cars condition, color, age, and miles on it. While the appraiser is looking at your car you can either wait around or go grab a bite to eat like we did. We came back the next night to sell my car (long story short my name technically wasn't on the title as my uncle had bought it but I paid the car loan!). After doing some paper work and one final look over you finish up the process. Then they give you a check that you have to deposit into the bank and you're good to go! All of the staff was very friendly. They made sure to do everything they could to make the entire process as seamless and easy as they could. They worked with us to provide the best experience possible. I would go back again! read more

The salesman was great! He was kind and helpful! I believe he was more reserved and not pushy at all. However I did the research myself. And was duped by the "car may have these accessories" Had the car shipped to my location and was MAD when I realized it wasnt the car I thought it was! The whole process of buying the car and getting the title and license plate was very easy they did everything for me . The biggest problem I have is there cleaning department is terrible my car was not vacuumed properly or clean the outside had water spots covering the whole car. I asked for them to come to my work and pick it up and to get back to reclean it they refused I had to take it back there set an hour and a half with two small kids and when I got the car back it was still in the same dirty state. The team at the S. Lindbergh location are very hospitable and eager to help their customers (existing and new). They helped me through any challenges with selecting the right vehicle and offered a competitive financing option. I like the option to look at nearby locations and have vehicles transferred in - that worked great for me! Being new to the car shopping world I appreciated their guidance with titles, tags, plates and all off the paperwork involved. I also appreciate the option to sell any vehicle to them to use towards a trade in! The waiting room is pleasant enough and again the staff are very friendly. Note: S. I bought a toyota camry on 04/13/18 from lindbergh Blvd St.louis MO branch . they told me that the plate numbers will be there in 5 to 7 days therefore I made commitments concerning my job to be in Louisiana starting on the 23rd of the month for 3 weeks giving it 10 days to receive the plate numbers. every time I call they say they haven't got the plate numbers yet .....the finance company didn't send the check yet ..... your papers at the motor vehicle.... when I got tired from waiting I went over there on the 25th of April thats after I lost my chance with the job orientation in Louisiana. Guess what they told me ? they said that the check they sent to the motor vehicle was the wrong amount and they have to issue another check with the right amount sometime next week. read more

Following up on my last review. So CarMax Service Department had my car for 2 full weeks while I was out of town. Came to pick it up today and the engine sounded like it would fall out of the car when I started it. Smoke came out from under the hood because there was spilled oil on the engine. Check engine light was on. Technician came out and told me the guy who worked on it was on vacation but he would run diagnostics. Claimed everything checked out fine when work had been completed. Turned out the engine timing was off. After asking him to unconnect all his testing equipment I explained that if they couldn't fix the car correctly in 14 days I would prefer they didnt touch my car again. Appointment with Plaza BMW next monday. Hopefully Carmax didnt screw the car up so bad it doesn't make it through the week, I will NEVER take my car here for service again. read more

My experience with Carmax was great! The whole process was hassle-free.

My friend picked out the Car he wanted and test drove it then when he went to buy it they didn't have the title for the car. So in the week that they made him wait on the title they tried to up sell and refused to lower the price of the car or give any discounts whatsoever. He was strung along because you could completely tell they could care less about making a sale or satisfying the customer. They ran his credit so many times that it ran the APR up on the car and he ended up paying $1,000 more than was agreed and discussed prior to doing the paperwork. They tacked all of it into the payments hoping it wouldn't matter trying to be deceitful about it all then said there wass nothing they could do about it. At this point so much time was wasted and the customer was exhausted by these people who were screwing up constantly. He just took the car and is now NOT HAPPY WITH HIS BRAND NEW CAR. It could have been a great experience. Do not go here if you want a nice experience and happy afterwards! read more

This was the worst experience I've ever had buying a car, or should I say, TRYING to buy a car. We went with Carmax solely for the home delivery aspect. We went through pre-approval process for financing, was approved, and picked out a car. We submitted all the requested documentation the day before delivery. The day of the delivery we were called and told they were unable to deliver and had to do curbside pickup or reschedule. We chose to do curbside. We were told we would be emailed the final document to e-sign. We live 35 minutes away, so after leaving home we finally received an email. Much to our surprise, it was a request for a personal reference. They waited 30 minutes before our appointment to ask for this. I have NEVER had to provide a personal reference for any other vehicles we've purchased. Nor do I have permission to give out other people's information. The sales manger came out to talk with us and after explaining how this entire process had been unsatisfactory, he offered no solution other than to provide personal references. Apparently it is the Carmax way to ask for personal references so if you miss a payment, they can call these people to harass them. The financing company, assuming it is NOT Carmax, should be the ones to ask for this and again, I've never had to supply this in any other car sales. Needless to say, we told them no thank you and left. We could have gone anywhere and we chose Carmax. NEVER AGAIN! read more

As it turned out I was not happy and returned it on the 5th day. I then went to the St Peters location and found a Cadillac STX Luxury model. Guenter was the perfect salesperson for me. He was very patient, professional and polite from the first day we saw him and throughout the experience of buying both cars. His low pressure but concerned nature will always stand out in my mind. I loved the no stress way of looking at vehicles. I loved it being bothered by sales people. However I went to get approved on my own and couldn't I needed a consigner which was no big deal. I set up an appointment about a week later with my father to go in. My father decided two days later he was ready to go in so we did. The original sales person wasn't there and we had to work with someone else, again no big deal, until the original sales guy called me complaining about how I completely screwed him over and cut him out of the deal. I would say it's a great way to buy a car except that one guy. read more

I wanted a replacement for our aging van, searched online a very long time. Found one myself, contacted the dealership, and paid the 250,00 transfer fee. I had to call them to see if it had gotten there and received no follow up call to let me know it had gotten there, which got my attention. --The vehicle was in good shape, and looked good and mileage was accurate, road tested good, although i noticed the rear tires had a noticeable saw tooth pattern on the outside edges, and during the paperwork stage i brought up to the sales man the problem and asked to have them replaced with a matching set just on the rear and rotate to the front. The sales man said he would create a service ticket for it to go in for repairs. I asked for them to furnish roof rack crossover bars, a second key fob, and an owners manual. Funny thing is, the KIA Dealership is within spitting distance, right next door. they valued my trade at 500.00, which was meticulously maintained albeit 12 years old and valued at trade 1000.00 minimum. I also asked to refund the transfer fee since I committed to buying the van. Here is how the purchase went: --I could not use my van as trade and get money off for the sales tax, which hurt. I ended up selling it myself 4 months later for 1750.00. --They said they would not furnish new tires, that they passed their rigorous inspection standards on the initial checkout, which i picked out on the lot (to be fair, i am an ex mechanic.) --They would not refund the transfer fee. --They would not get us a new fob, again the KIA dealer was next door and they had a week to do it. --They would not get the roof crossover bars, a 350.00 expense, again available next door. --They said to go on the website for a paper version for the owner's manual on Helminc.com, not avail. on KIA's website. They state that they will reimburse you if you have to buy it. --Long story short, I bought the manual, showed them the shipping receipt and credit card charges since KIA would not give me the receipt in the package or when i called them (KIA) showed the Lady at the counter at CARMAX my proof of purchase, said she could not get me a 25.00 refund since it was not actually a receipt. I gave up after that. This was the final punch in the stomach/ fart in the face I got from them. --I will never buy a car from them again, and not recommend them either. read more

It was supposed to take a few days mind you the car was only a hr and 15 min drive away at another carmax it took over a week and a half to come in. Then when the car arrived I was told that the title had no room on it for information and they would have to get another title so, Im still waiting almost 3 weeks sence I had it initially transfered. My husband and I were looking at Lincoln mkts. We found one on carmax we liked, as well as one at Dave Sinclair. The one on carmax was located in Washington and said it was a $899 fee to have it transferred to the St. Louis location. I preferred the red color of the one on carmax and even though it was higher priced than the local one, I thought I could call them to see if they would wave the transfer fee. I was told no. Not even hold on, let me see, just no. The phone call lasted less than one minute. LOL! His reasoning was they hire an independent shipping company that would be charging carmax to ship the car and that fee is actually half of what the shipping company charges and they only charge the customer half of what they actually pay which is the $899. I call BS. 1. My husband and I have paid an independent shipping company to ship us a car from an independent owner from California and the fee was only $400. 2. I can't believe that a company as large as carmax, with multiple locations nation wide would not have their own transporting trucks for this purpose. 3. They have to know their customers would be looking on the app and see cars in different states and weigh out paying $899 for shipping or just get the same car from a local dealer for a lesser price and not pay the fee. Sorry, but the color red is not worth the additional $899 for me. read more

I love the car I purchased. The problem was when the dealership came up with a 'bullshit' excuse to devalue my trade in by $2000.00, saying that the added on sunroof was not up to Carmax 'standards'. I checked with 2 other Carmax dealers in the St. Louis area & the Carmax dealer in Lou. Ky. where I purchased the trade-in (& they were the one who referred me to the shop that installed the sunroof in the 1st place!), and NONE of them knew of such a 'policy' & all agreed that a sunroof was a most desirable accessory and would certainly be considered an asset in all cases, & the 2grand discount ended up costing me an additional $120.00 in Ky. sales tax when I registered the new car!! In addition Carmax drilled 5 'unsightly' holes in the lower front bumper for their plastic Carmax advertising plate that will have to be repaired at a body shop to be made to look right-more expense. I call on Carmax at Lindbergh Blvd. to 'do the right thing' & refund me the $2,000.00 they 'shafted' me out of plus monies to repair the front bumper & the $120.00 in additional tax that occurred as a result of a purely fictitious & obviously 'made up' reason to intentionally defraud me out of an additional $2,000.00 that went as 'profit' for their dealership. And-oh the shop that installed the sunroof said that their products met all safety standards-or they wouldn't be able to stay in business. AND Carmax showed me NO-ZERO such sunroof standards policy in writing & the Carmax salesman who sold me the trade-in said he knew of no such poilcy either & he is a '5' star & very successful salesman. So that's my story-Carmax wouldn't be on my 'Chriistmas Card' list at this time!! read more
