No pressure sales tactics, answering all of our stupid questions, and above all, being patient while we worked through getting a loan through our bank. Let me first say, this poor review is in no ways a reflection of my PHENOMENAL sales rep, Soth. It's due to the condescending, curt, rude, deceptive, power trip actions of Tom Haines the sale manager. Even after my Lien holder confirmed my loan had been approved Tom maintained a very condescending demeanor. It's like he was so mad I got approved for the loan. I saw him sitting at his desk with three other men just COMBING through my application looking for any reason to say I couldn't leave with my car. I even had gotten to paper work with the car pulled up when he called over my rep and asked about some additional income.....when I walked over(keep in mind it was almost 9pm and I got there at 430) he said in the snarkiest tone "I was TRYING to give *insert lien holder* what they needed before YOU came over" keep in mind the man was not on the phone. I wouldn't be surprised if he made it up and was calling them trying to make up some unfounded excuse to have them revoke the loan. When I asked him for his name he got a snarky tone and said "it's Tom Haines I'll even give you my business cards, so go wait over there *points to another desk* this is my third car I've bought from Carmax and never have I had anyone in sales tell me I could not be a part of the conversation concerning my finances so it leads me to believe he was trying to say something from his own personal perspective because he was clearly having a power trip. I didn't argue with him I went And sat at the desk as he so rudely requested or demanded I should say. Less than 10 minutes later he comes over and says there was a mistake it wasn't my fault it wasn't Carmax fault but there is no issue with the loan and I'm good to leave with the car..... so why was his face red and why did he look oh so stressed out? I'll tell you why. It's because NOW he had to save face. when I tell you he tried to stare me down. His body language reeked of someone trying to cause intimidation. I stared at him right back. Calmly, composed, and firm. I did not break eye contact. I may be a woman, but I am a business woman, first and foremost. I know a Power trip when I see one. Tom was clearly having a major power trip and it's very obvious he's also not an enjoyable person to work with. Why do I say that? If he spoke to a paying customer that way how do you think he treats the people underneath him? Not to mention a young woman of color buying an upscale vehicle. His tone with reprehensible, and if the CEO of Carmax was there I 100% put my life on it he would never show that side to anyone who had control over his paycheck. I will never recommend this Carmax to anyone as long as he is there as his presence radiates, harassment, discrimination,prejudice,and a high horse God complex. So I have bought and sold many cars to dealerships and I have to say this is the worst possible location to due so at . Be prepared for mass disorganization and more then 7 people from different departments to be involved for a simple trade in . They refuse to do any part other then the paperwork of verifying a car. I waiting an unusually long time to get assistance for basic help (even for covid ) . Their health procedures are good but employees were Sighing with any little question of help. Worst customer service I have ever experienced at a carmax . Take your money and good business else where. Very dissatisfied and let down compared to service I have gotten at other carmax. Purchased a truck for personal and business use in Janurary of 2007. Put down $10,000 cash and opted for the extended warranty. Truck has been in the shop just about every single month. Returned to Carmax repair on several ocassions for the same problems. Each and every time Carmax mechanics do anything to my truck there is something new wrong with it when I get it back. They refuse to return phone calls, remedy the situation, or anything. All I ever hear from them is that they're contacting their Sales Manager or their District Manager - but no one calls back. They tell me to go ahead and bring the truck in (hour drive from where I live) with an attitude like this isn't any type of burden - well I guess not for them as they get their payments on time monthly and they already got my $10k in cash! read more

Nothing but problems with my car since the day I bought it that never get resolved. And the icing on the cake today was when they tried to charge me $119 just to LOOK at my car! (tire leak). I'm a person who can't haggle to save her life. Neither is my husband. So Carmax was the answer when I needed a new car. I avoided car shopping as long as possible, but when my 14-year-old Honda Accord threatened to conk out for good, I knew it was time. What's great is that you can look at the Carmax website and pick different parameters (price, style...), and view what they currently have in stock. The salesman we talked to treated us respectfully. He didn't talk down to us, listened to what we wanted and suggested options. I test drove four cars that day and wound up with the perfect one for me: a '02 Saturn L300 previously owned by a little old lady (I presume) in Barrington Hills. She must have kept it in great condition; and Carmax does thoroughly recondition all of the cars they sell. The price for what I got was fair. No heavy pressure or wheeling-dealing! They also will buy your old car. But note that they sometimes lowball it. They offered $700 for my old Honda. But we felt we could get more selling it elsewhere, and wound up with $1400 for it. All of these reviewers are sorely misguided, confused, or completely ignorant to buying and trading cars. Carmax will lowball you terribly on your trade in. This is how they reap profit. 'Sales friendly, low pressure' means that they can lure people in for a 'no negotiation, best deal' price. I was looking to trade in my 2 yr old FJ Cruiser to buy something more practical, as I was starting a family. Mind you, the FJ has best resale value of ANY vehicle on the market, at the moment. Not only was Carmax the lowest offer of all the book values (NADA, KBB, etc). But they were several thousand lower than the Acura dealer that I traded the truck in for...to the tune of $4,000 lower. See...you can negotiate your trade-in price at a normal dealership. In essence, you are selling your traded in vehicle to the dealer. Do no be fooled or roped into a CarMax 'deal'. 'hassle free' usually = ripoff. Last example is that Autotrader.com offered me $1k over what CarMax did. And that's an offer for a vehicle they haven't seen. Three weeks after getting the car I wanted shipped from Texas, I finally drove it off the lot... with ripped tint, which they said I would have to drive it back and they would have to outsource it to their "tint guy." Two days later I brought it back for the tint... also with screaming brakes and the headlights unaligned. Well a week after that was fixed I finally got to drive the car. For another two days until the clutch went out. Now I'm waiting for the clutch to get fixed, which by the way was a huge hassle because they claimed I was driving it to hard since it is a "sportier vehicle." The guy told me it was a 10 hour job to replace the clutch, so who knows when it will be done. Really? I've replaced an entire clutch in 5 hours and I'm a total amateur. Can't wait to find out what else is wrong with it. I expressed to the service manager that I wanted to see documentation on the so called "125 point inspection." I mean honestly what do they check if they sold me a car with a bad clutch and screaming brakes. Obviously nothing was provided. Thinking of contacting my lawyer. I'm just glad I went with financing through my bank, which their finance guy scoffed at claiming they have the lowest financing ever. I got to full points lower from my bank, I also got the extended warranty through my bank as well. I could have leased a brand new audi A4 for this headache. read more

We bought a 2008 Jeep Commander here last month. Great purchase experience. Our salesman, Ryan, was patient and made a great pitch, without having it feel like the "hard sell". Dang, he sold my wife on the ride. I haven't been able to sell her on anything in 3 years. Next time she has a "headache", I'm going to get Ryan on the phone. The whole process of buying a car from Carmax is effortless, or at least it was for me. You get approved for credit on the spot in about 10 minutes. They appraise your trade-in while you wait. Clean bright show room and so many used cars to choose from. They also give you a detailed service plan for the foreseeable life of your car with upfront pricing. Their warranties are good as well. Also, when I took my car into the dealership, they found all types of things wrong with the car. The saving grace was another CarMax. They serviced my car and said let us make it right. So after someone put a note on my car asking if I wanted to sell it, I decided to see what Carmax would give me for my beloved R32. Don't really need two cars right now with my wife not working and not going to school for another 6 months. I brought it in to be appraised yesterday and waited about a half hour before someone could take it out for a spin and do the whole 142 point inspection dealio...(Just kidding about the 142 points. I have no idea how many points there are exactly, I just liked the number) Eva, who started the whole process with me,calls me back to the office to explain the ins and outs, and what details were considered in determining my cars value..we're going through the different screens and the anticipation is building up until.... DRUMROLL PLEASE! (brrrrrbrrrrbrrrrrrrrrrr) Just kidding, I'm not going to tell you exactly what my ca was worth, but it was a hell of a lot more than I was expecting! Considering all the minor dings and crap that were wrong with my car? Mirror caps cracked(Previously stolen.) Lower passenger side bumper grille missing(Pretty sure someone stole it.) Busted driver's side taillight(Drunk driver. Not me, the guy that hit my car. And my sister's. And then let his car "come to a rest" against a light pole. And of course, even if I knew the car and where he lived, I could not pin the damage to my or my sister's car on him, because I did not physically see him in the car hitting mine.) Driver's side visor missing (Long story about VW's poor seat design. I also cracked my own windshield due to the design) Glovebox handle broken(Still usable) Dent on hatch. Water/sun damage on drivers seat(I left my roof open so it got wet and then after it rained, the blistering sun came out and baked my seat weird. The Drivers side seatback release lever broken. Oh, and the icing on the cake? The morning before I brought it to Carmax, the e-brake cable snapped when I was pulling it up. So I decided then that I would be selling my car the next day. I cleaned it out and brought it to Carmax, removed my plates and allowed my car it's freedom. The whole drop-off process took about 20 minutes. Seamless and quick, it's literally 4 signatures, and giving up your keys. Just don't forget your title! read more

I've never done the Carmax thing, this whole 'no haggle' kinda bugged me, but when you need a car and regular dealerships are pricing them so high... you need to look at other options. So, we'd been on the net looking at cars, seen a bunch at Carmax, and this past Thursday finally decided to head out to Schaumburg and look at a few. Well, the sales guy, Paul, was fantastic. It was cold and rainy and he offered to bring cars to the doors for us, but that just seemed to be too much, we'd save time if we went out in the lot with him... so we ventured out to the no. 1 car on our list and checked it out and I liked it enough to test drive it. After a spin around on the frontage road, I was sold... though I didn't say that right away, not that it matters, it wouldn't have driven the price up or down. We went back in, I talked to my husband and we decided to buy it. Why didn't I give Carmax 5 stars, well, I can't because they are like most dealerships in that they take forever to close the deal. We got there at 7:30 PM, I test drove one car, looked at one car, and we were not signed, sealed and delivered until 9:45 PM, and we had our kids with us so that kind of sucked. Generally, however, I think Carmax represents what they say, and gives you the best deal. We didn't pay too much for our 2004 Trail Blazer, that had really low milage on it. When I compared the price to comparable vehicles at other dealerships, we saved in excess of $2,000 and there was no haggling involved. I would definitely recommend buying a used car here, and we might just be back in a year or so to buy another car for my husband. read more

Unfortunately, I couldn't buy the car until the title came in which took about two months and throughout the whole process he kept me updated weekly, and even put the car on hold for me as soon as the title came in!! They sold me hybrid car with the hybrid battery warranty only left for 5 month. They asked me to buy the extended warranty but now they tell me it does not cover the hybrid battery. New hybrid battery cost over $3500. and Installation about $700 at the dealer. They are not knowledgeable about the hybrid car so they did not warn me about this huge cost. It was extremely hot day and apparently Hybrid battery is weak during the hot day. I will never buy another car from carmax nor sell mine to them. read more

I would like to give 4.5 stars, but alas I cannot.... booo. After crashing my 1999 Nissan Altima with 120k miles (on my way to work, which i picked up a bonus shift because we were swamped with kids as usual), I was like wtf, thanks karma! My little old heart was set on buying an Audi A4, hell Im a nurse now, why not?! After much dismay from my p-units (regarding me wanting an Audi), I finally succumbed to my fathers idea of checking out carmax. (I was highly against the place, until I set foot in there). We immediately were approached by a friendly sales consultant, Bob T, whom I highly recommend! He was honest, respectful and straight up about everything. After asking what I was interested in (and setting up for an associate to appraise my crashed vehicle - which they wont be fixing and selling - they will put it out to a wholesaler) we ventured out to the car lot to look at cars. He asked what I was interested in and my price range and after not finding anything I was happy, with he took us into his office to look on carmax.com. He explained how the website worked and let me sit at his desk, use his computer and browse cars at other carmax dealerships! Now mind you it was 630pm and my pops is a big guy, he likes his dinner so he was getting a little pissy pants. So I quickly made a decision on a 2004 Honda Accord EX coupe with 25k miles on it. Bob has it transferred for free and it was there the next day - which was Friday. Today I went in, traded my car in for $750, hey I was happy just to get the piece of junk off my hands (sorry old car, you got me through many years, but it was just time to move on!) and 2.5 hours later I drove off with my freakin sweet new ride! Heated leather seats, sunroof, 6 disk cd player, side impact air bags .... im in love :) Yes, I did pay a bit more than black book said it was, but hey, it was easy as hell and I know I got a great car with low miles. What can I say about carmax First let me say that I had no intention of buying a car but my personal life has somewhat forced me into pursuing this option I went to carmax because I had NO idea what type of car I wanted. I have had the same car for 8 years but it was time to explore my options Carmax has all different types so I figured I could at least narrow down my decision My car rep/salesman was Brandon Lovejoy. He is a super nice guy. He was very patient with me and helped me to zero in on what type of car would suit me best. And let me say that he loves his job and it shows We went for 5 or 6 test drives in the 10 degree weather and he was smiling the whole time. I narrowed down my choice to 2 cars and Brandon worked out the cost details for me for both cars. I never ever felt pressured to buy or commit to a car. So this made me feel better. The price quotes came back and I made a decision Since I wasn't planning on buying a car that day, I didn't have everything needed. I didn't bring my title but they worked that out on the spot for me. All the paperwork was processed quickly, my new car was detailed for me and I was out the door with a new car before I new it. I will definitely be visiting carmax for my future car needs. The place is friendly, clean and best of all there is no sales pressure or cheesy sales person. Yeah for carmax. My husband and I had a fantastic experience at Carmax. We went in to "browse", but the process was so pain free that we walked away with a car that day and traded in our old car for a great price. Jerry was our salesman and he stressed that the salesmen make the same commission on each sale no matter what the price of the car. I did not feel like he was steering me towards the most expensive cars and he would give honest opinions like "don't every buy a ____, they are not reliable..." We walked away with a 2007 Honda Pilot that we love and like I said, got a fantastic offer on our used Hyundai which was appraised on the spot while we browsed for cars. I've bought cars at regular dealerships before, and I usually feel "dirty" by the end with all the haggling and worrying that you are getting screwed on the price. I wasn't worried here. The price is the best price and Jerry even sat down and showed us the Kelly blue book prices and our car came in significantly lower. I've never been to Carmax before this experience, but now I can't imagine doing it another way. read more

We've had pretty good experiences here. We sold two cars to Carmax, bought one from them (which they shipped up from Florida), and I also got a quote from them to use as bargaining power at a dealership. Getting the quote was really quick and helped me immensely during my negotiations at another dealership. I didn't bring it up immediately, but after the dealer low-balled me, it was infinitely more powerful to be able to say "No, it's worth XYZ amount" and show the paper from Carmax rather than just say "I know it's worth ___." read more

I purchased a 2014 Honda Accord at CarMax in 2017. The paint on the hood of the car is now bubbling and cracking. on the hood of the car. It has only 27000 miles on it. I called Honda, they said to call CarMax. I called and they said their is nothing they could do. I have had Hondas with 200000 miles on them and the paint never peeled. This is not acceptable. I am absolutely in love with my car. They were so helpful. The purchase involved three people in three separate states and my salesman was patient and understanding. Long story short, my mother purchased the car and my father put me on his insurance until I am able to transfer the title. This made it easier for us to secure the car and spend less money in the long run. The problem was that my mother is in California and my father is in Minnesota. The car was in Schaumburg, IL. The entire sale took about a week because of this roundabout way, but there was no pressure and they made sure that the paperwork got out to Sacramento and over to Minneapolis for my parents to sign. As soon as the signatures reached IL, they called me up and let me pick up the car that very evening. It was a well orchestrated event. It's been about three weeks and the car is perfect. For a used car it is in amazing condition and they did a wonderful job of cleaning it up before turning it over to me. I look forward to many years with it. read more

Worked with Mark Graves at Schaumburg location and had a very positive experience. I found a car on line in Tinley Park and asked for transfer to Schaumburg. I was contacted immediately and Mark handled everything. He also kept in touch with me throughout the entire process. I test drove the car when it arrived in Schaumburg, which only took 2 days. Everything was explained to me and I feel like I got a great car for a fair price. I also sold my car to CarMax and, given it's condition and problems, was offered a fair price. Everything down to the license plates and paperwork was handled very quickly. I had one issue with the car within the first 30 days, out of alignment, and they took care of, no questions asked. My one complaint would be th service department. I had an appointment for alignment but when I got there, I was told they only have one machine and I would have to wait until it was free. This shouldn't have been an issue since I had the appointment. Ended up sitting for almost 2 hours in hard chair and with my back issues, I was very uncomfortable and in pain by the time I got my car back. The bottom line is I think CarMax is a very "well oiled machine" and make the car buying experience very simple and stress free. Ask for Mark Graves. read more

Sales people were really respectful. What you see is what you get. No one talks down to you, makes the switch and bait. If you are qualified for the loan, they show it to right in front of you(As opposed to buying in other stores, Where they behind cubicles and monitors). I like their straightforwardness, Yes I paid a little more. Atleast I know I can sleep with peace everyday, instead of having a hunch or pinprickin in the back of head thinking somehow I got ripped off for the vehicle I bought. I had never been inside one before but we needed to sell our car and all those relatives and friends who said, "Be sure to let me know when you are ready to sell" were full of hot air. A buddy suggested going to CarMax. First off, this place is huge! I've never been to a car dealer that had as many cars - Holy Cow! But...we weren't there to buy. The selling process is exactly as they describe in the ads. No haggle, no BS and all handled very professionally. We were in and out in an hour. The amount that we received was less than what we could have gotten via a private sale but I was happy to not have to deal with the BS. I'll probably be buying my next car from CarMax. read more

Those who know me know I hate haggling, so the Carmax business model, i.e., a store selling cars at a single-price point, is very appealing to me. I also do a lot of research before plunging into a car purchase decision, so the online inventory makes quick work of figuring out pricing, availability (at local or nearby stores), vehicle history, etc. The Schaumburg location is clean, expansive, and well-lit, both inside and outside. Our family has purchased three vehicles from there, with the always attentive Dimitri Atanasov at our side. While I'm sure all the folks at this Carmax location are friendly and helpful, Dimitri is my go-to person. A long-time veteran of Carmax, he's knowledgeable and accommodating - never is there a hint of pressure and he is always willing to let us drive various vehicles and inspect them to our heart's content. As an attestation to his level of customer service, Dimitri's office is full of well-deserved awards. In addition, the back office staff has always been attentive. We've used our own (credit union) financing in the past, and Carmax has a convenient process whereby they provide a five day window to give your institution time to deliver a check to them. Also, the last van we bought needed some touch-up work for a couple of scratches noticed during our inspection, and Dimitri ensured that the responsible Carmax team took care of it.
