We walked straight through the front door and out the side into the lot to look at SUVs. We were able to get into most of them and even turn them on to check them out. We were out there walking around for over an hour. Not one salesperson approached us. I guess that's what they do there? You find what you like and you go find someone and tell them what you're interested in? I guess. We then walked back into the building and straight out the front door, back to our car and left. I do say this, we walked in. There is a host stand of sorts and a few people were there. They saw us, made eye contact, said nothing, and looked away. Did we not look like we were interested buyers or something? Not even a "hello" or a "good morning". I don't know. we purchased a car from carmax and were told at the very end when we were signing the papers that the car was stolen. didn't think much into it until we started seeing little things on the car. well life happened but eventually I contacted carmax and they sent email back and forth about the incident i had high hopes that they would fix some of the things and was told to take the car in just to be blamed of why it wasn't taken in sooner. Bought a 2019 BMW 540i xDrive 2/21/2025....had it inspected at Patrick BMS in Schaumburg shortly thereafter. This purchase was my 4th or 5th from Carmax, all were STELLAR in every step of the process.....this time around, things took a 180 degree turn. My inspection called for brake fluid flush, which the vehicles computer also showed that this was a needed service. Rear brakes were referred to as 'brake rotors excessively rusted/pitted'...actually heard them squeaking as I pulled out of the garage this AM. Inspection also showed that battery was aged...did a Google search for this issue, and it also confirms that the battersy should be replaced every 3 - 5 years. Carmax refused to fix any of these issues...which really soured my opinion of Carmax. Over the years, I've told NUMEROUS friends, family, colleagues about my process of buying from Carmax, taking it for an inspection, and then bringing the report back to Carmax...past purchases, Carmax always upheld their promised guarantee. I even told my service rep at both Perillo BMW & Patrick BMW...both liked the idea so much, they stated that they begin referring the process to their customer base. Wanted to go on the record, as it seems Carmax is avoiding meeting the promise when confronted with info from an inspection from a certified dealer for the brand (BMW) Consumers have choices...and unfortunately, I will be moving on from Carmax...it was a good run...but this experience, in my opinion, is a crystal clear sign of things to come. DO NOT USE CAR MAX OF SCHAMBURG!!!! I went to CarMax because I believed in their advertised philosophy of honesty, transparency, and integrity. That was a huge mistake. What I experienced at the Schaumburg location was the exact opposite: pure negligence and dishonesty wrapped in a polished corporate package. I bought a 2019 Toyota Corolla from them, expecting a vehicle in safe, roadworthy condition. Instead, I was handed a car with a tread depth of 4/32" on two tires barely clinging to legality and absolutely unsafe by any reasonable standard. Replacing those tires cost me $400 out of pocket. CarMax refused to take any responsibility, brushing me off with a claim that 4/32" is still "safe." Safe for who? Let's be clear: Uber, Lyft, DoorDash -- none of these companies would allow a car with that tread depth to operate on their platforms. According to Uber Eats, 4/32" is unsafe for delivering cheeseburgers. But CarMax Schaumburg believes it's just fine for hauling my four kids around Chicago in the middle of winter. That's not just insulting, it's reckless. CarMax has made it clear that its bottom line matters more than customer safety or decency. They've lost me as a returning customer forever, and I will go out of my way to warn others. This isn't just a bad experience it's a betrayal of trust. CarMax Schaumburg sold me an unsafe vehicle and refused to make it right. They've proven themselves to be precisely what they claim not to be: a stereotypical, dishonest used car dealership that cuts corners and gambles with their customers' lives all to save a buck. False advertising. The while "customer first" approach is all smoke and mirrors. Very long story short (I'll spare you) but they don't even know how to properly fix a muffler and their service team is incompetent in customer service or common sense in general. They had my car longer than I had and didn't offer me a loaner (total of 5 weeks for a muffler and heat shields lol) I had to escalate my 4 month long issue to the GM who immediately solved my problem. Which could have been solved months ago if they knew how to do minor fixes that they advertise for. I had to end up at a Subaru specialist to fix a muffler LOL. Even at that time, I had to unfortunately had to work with John, the service manager, who dragged out the process even longer and was unpleasant to work with for his attitude, lack of professionalism and zero common sense. Spare yourself and just go to a dealership so you don't have to deal with people who play pretend mechanics or businesspeople - if they even answer the phone. read more

Bought a used car from here in Dec 2024...after owning it for just over 24 hours the check engine light came on for the torque converter. They had my car for over a month trying to get it fixed and eventually gave me a loaner car which was a 2020 Civic. I drove the loaner to work and got off that night to see that the starter had gone bad and engine wouldn't crank. I can not in good faith recommend you purchase a car from this dealer as I've had 2 bad experiences with the servicing of cars from here. Carmax may be a good place to buy a used car depending on the year, make and model. But selling your used car to them is an entirely different matter. I decided to test whether the appraisals performed by Carmax are fair or do they lowball you. The answer is that they lowball you; especially if they think you need to sell. I took a 2024 RAm 2500 Bighorn in good condition with 19,000 miles to several dealers to be appraised for trade- in. I did not promise I would buy a car from the dealer. Just a straight up sale. The appraisals came back $48,000-$50,000. I took the same truck to Carmax on the same day and they would only offer $36,000. I had the same thing happen to me years earlier with a Chrysler Pacific. Go to a reputable dealer or sell it privately. Do not sell to Carmax. Their in house appraisers are employed by Carmax and cannot be trusted to be fair. read more

This is a brief addendum to my review. While I still think 2 stars may still do, I deducting another star for the following reason. After being told to wait about an hour, 90-minutes later I realized what time it was and went to the desk. I asked about the car and they said it was ready for about 45-minutes. I was a bit sarcastic when I said it would have been nice if they called me. No apologies, but their answer was the person who left the packet at the desk didn't tell them and left. In these times of COVID, it is absolutely abhorrent that a business would keep anyone waiting that long in a crowded room for no reason. The preceding story is below. I will never do business with CarMax again. They have lost a repeat customer. We've bought several cars here over the years. The last ones were more than 5 years ago so I can no longer comment on their sales processes. This time, we came back to sell a car we bought in 2011. I tried to sell a car here a few years ago and was shocked they offered 1/2 of the wholesale value. We chose not to sell that one. This was different. We had a 2004 Honda CRV that was in great shape. But recently someone sawed off the catalytic converter. We evaluated our options and quickly realized replacing that part would cost more than the car was worth. We've put a lot of money into the upkeep so if they replace the part, I'm sure they. I'll easily sell it. The experience was fair. After having them evaluate the car, they offered a reasonable price. Once you get to the business office, the experience wasn't so great and we had to come back a second time. Last night, the pursing making the offer said we would be the last one they could handle that evening. At the business office they said we'd have to come back. We went back to the buyer who spoke with them. We had to listen to the person in the office chastise the buyer for several minutes before they agreed to continue. We waited about 45 minutes only to be told there was a problem with the title. Understandable - these things happen. They told us to call the state the next morning and it would be resolved in minutes. It was. When I returned, I was told there was another problem with the title and they would have to have a new one issued by the state at a cost of $50. While $50 isn't a huge sum, they could have told me the night before. I asked why and got a shrug - no explanation, no apology, just a simple take it or leave it. I need to sell it so what choice did I have. Then, they said it would take an hour to get the paperwork ready. You know, I've sold cars directly before and the paperwork takes minutes. Maybe there is more red tape at a dealership? I don't want to sound like simply a complainer. The price they offered was fair. The experience dealing with the business office was poor. I think I'm done with CarMax after this experience. While I was a seller and not a buyer, I've bought 5 cars from this CarMax over the years and may have bought another in the future. Not any longer. The offices were Covid-Safe and process was complete in a few clicks. Michael knew his stuff but the price was fair for both of us so no arguing or hidden charges. I found a car and paid $250 to have it shipped from North Carolina, but I received no updates and couldn't track the shipment. After nearly two weeks of waiting, I called and was told a manager would contact me. The manager eventually informed me that they had to apply for a new title, which would take up to two months. I was not informed about this delay initially, which is unacceptable. There seems to be a disconnect between the online transfer process and visiting the store. I demanded a refund for the transfer fee, which they thankfully provided. Despite these issues, I decided to at least test drive the car. Upon arrival, I was asked if I had an appointment, which surprised me because I've never needed an appointment to buy a car. The receptionist explained they were busy. While waiting, I requested my car be appraised. The receptionist said my salesman could help, but he refused to put my car in the queue to speed things up. After a 45-minute wait, I finally met a salesperson and explained the situation, asking to test drive the car. She returned 10 minutes later, saying the car was buried and unavailable due to the title situation. After waiting another 20 minutes, we finally test-drove the car, which was nice, but we couldn't wait the two months for the title. I then asked for my used car to be appraised. She handed the keys to the appraisers and returned with an insulting offer of $6,000 for a 2016 model with 60,000 miles on it. A friend had recently bought a 2017 model from their lot for $12,000. I refused their offer, realizing they planned to make nearly $6,000 on my trade. I ended up buying the same car at another dealer for $1,500 less, with a warranty, and received $8,000 for my trade. Let me start with 1st the car smelled like cigarettes, 2nd my wife n I did not notice until months later that the rear driver door color is off!! I came in to get my car diagnosed by CarMax so I can see what was wrong with the AC so it can be fixed asap , I told the employee multiple times that I wanted to get my car diagnosed so I can get it fixed and the employee that was helping me kept looking at appraisals for my vehicle when those weren't my intentions whatsoever. Within the first 2 weeks of having the car my tail light went out and later down the road other issues like a leak near the oil pan and by the side axil where the seal meets the transmission . This experience was very disappointing I hope after this there would be no reason to come back in the future. read more

I bought an SUV this last September 23rd and it might be the last time I refer someone here or buy again for a few reasons. First, it is not the first time I buy a vehicle at this CarMax, last time it was an awesome experience and I had my sister and my niece both came to buy their vehicles here as well. I was looking for an SUV in a specific color, make, model and year and I called in September 3rd since I found one that I really liked according to the pictures so I paid the transfer fee to bring it from another state. I was talking to someone that I thought it was from this store. On the phone Simon was nice and pleasant to talk to so I made the payment and he said to wait until the car arrived so I could go see it. On September 16th I got a call to let me know that the SUV arrived at the store so I made the appointment to see it on the 23rd. When I arrived at the Schaumburg CarMax I talked to the guy in front and asked for the guy I was talking to on the phone, Simon and I this is when Gerry Dibendetti said the guy did not work there and I was talking to someone in service but probably did not work there, he did not even check if there was someone with that name in the store. He proceeded to show me the SUV in the computer and soon brought it out for me to test drive. Immediately I say a dent on it and also it was very dirty outside and filthy inside, had hairs and make up on the middle console as well as the arm rest. We test drove it and I really liked it but I asked Gerry to get the dent fixed and the other touch up paint that looked very unprofessionally done to get it fixed and his answer was that it would get fixed once I signed for the documents, that I would come back to get it fixed and would probably take a couple of hours to get it out. I asked him to ask first then I signed the documents and he did not like that, he seemed upset and all this time he kept bringing down his mask to talk or to look at his computer, I even took a picture of him bringing his mask to his chin to look at the computer. He got close sometimes without his mask and I really had to try to stay calm. Gerry told me the service people were out to lunch so perhaps I could sign the documents and then he could ask so I told him I would come back in an hour to grab something to eat while the service group came back from lunch and have an answer for me. When I came back he said they were busy so I could sign and ( the car will get fixed, don't worry it's a minor dent they will get rid of it fast) I asked him to check again and he left upset to ask, perhaps, while Jay the Store Manager saw us so he introduced himself and I told him the car was dirty, he said do not worry it will get cleaned before you leave today and left. Gerry came back and said this time that the dent was so small that CarMax has a policy that lets one small dent get by, and the rest is just the way it is. I do not know if to believe him or not but at this time I needed a vehicle so I signed, the car was washed and half cleaned inside, I have to spend a couple of hundred dollars since I have to get the carpet shampooed since it looks extremely dirty, it is the first time I buy a car that is dirty and I asked Gerry why is the car so dirty, he said, (well if I was running the place the experience would be different but things have changed) At this point I just wanted to leave so we did. When I got home I noticed that the rubber mats, the cargo mat and the trunk cover were missing, I realized this because I remembered the pictures and immediately I called Gerry since he had to call my cellular phone to test drive the car, he said someone would call me about that but did agree that he did not see the items in the trunk since he opened the doors and the trunk when he first showed me the SUV. The next day Sept 24 John the Service Manager asked me what was missing and asked me more than once if I wanted the rubber mats and told him it is on the pictures, so yes. I am glad I noticed right away since it is not my first time with this make and model of SUV. On the 29th I got a call to let me know the items had arrived and the lady said to be there the same day or the next, no other options, so I went the next day and they gave me the boxes so I had to put the mats on myself. So I have a dirty car with a dent and poor touch up paint on it. I would not recommend this CarMax, since then Gerry or anyone else has reached out about the car except for this customer feedback survey on October the 8th, I guess after the nine days you have to return the vehicle. I will have to look elsewhere for my next vehicle and no referrals to this place. I now hope someone will get back to let me know if they can make things right. read more

Worst of the worst! If you want your time wasted and to be constantly told different things and policies every time you show up go to CarMax Schaumburg! Not only do they think that they're lawyers but they also have no idea how to read their own documents! The people that work in the back left (I believe that's the business department or whatever) are absolute trash! The woman with long black hair and terrible nails always has a terrible attitude and spent a solid 10 minutes reading paperwork that was NOTARIZED trying to find a problem with it. I was told because I signed my first and last name and not my middle name they couldn't accept the document that had been mailed out of state twice, after they agreed to accept it cause that's ridiculous they informed us my mom couldn't sign as a witness on her paperwork which is understandable but the thing is my moms name was what was put in the blank spot stating that the witness knows my mom (insert my mom name) and the witness signs their name at the bottom in front or the notary! When I explained to them my mom didn't sign as the witness and that they aren't looking at the right spot they went back to the office and found a different reason not to accept the paperwork! At this point my fiancé and I had enough and left. The next week I went to the location in Algonquin and had the best experience! I was asked zero questions about the paperwork and was able to sell my old car to them in less than a hour! I have bought two cars from this CarMax location. The first was in November 2019 and I had worked with Kenneth Corcelles and the second was yesterday and I had worked with Matthew Sample. Both times I have purchased a car it was such a painless easy experience. I inquired online and went in and was out in under 2 hours with my new car. Matt Sample helped me get approved for the car I wanted (2015 Jeep Cherokee) and let me know what I had to bring in to walk out that morning with the car. He even came in two hours earlier to accommodate my schedule which is great customer service. I had trouble picking between three different cars but as soon as I found the one I wanted, he put that on hold for me, let me test drive it and I was in love with the car. The greatest thing about my experience with CarMax both times is that the employees there are not pushy at all. They will work with what you want and help you get it. Everything is a seamless process here. In terms of the location itself, it's in Schaumburg and super convenient. It's also very clean and everyone is friendly there. After signing my car loan documents, the manager personally came up to congratulate me on purchasing a new vehicle and for picking them not once but twice. I seriously refuse to buy a car from anywhere but CarMax. I received my car clean inside and out and detailed. Everyone answered all my questions. Overall, I had a very satisfactory experience here and would highly recommend this CarMax location to anyone who wants to buy a new car. read more

I came in to check out a car I told my sales woman that I have an extremely bad back and I am disabled I cannot walk very far. She told me that the vehicle was all the way in the R section to give you an idea we were in the A section this lot is literally the size of a couple blocks I told her with there be any way she could drive the vehicle up to the door she told me No!! I was about ready to walk out because I knew she just did not want to do her job. So I walked which felt like forever to get to this car by this time my back was killing me and my legs were starting not to work I asked her could she drive the car with me in it to the front so I did not have to walk back again. She told me she cannot do this due to Covid. But this time I knew I was not going to buy anything at this dealership they have complete lack of any protocols for people with disabilities. And I left. But when it came time to sell I was told they give the best offers.....makes sense, right? But NO. Made an appointment to get my car appraised. They lost the appointment. They did then do their best to fit me in. (Why I gave 2 instead of one) Their offer was 30% less than the dealership offered!! And 40% less than Carvana. So for an extra 5k I went with Carvana. Over all the sales experience was pretty straight forward but lots of hiccups and lack of communication between the departments leaving us with a lot of repetition. Also, the car had a check engine light that went off literally 2 weeks after buying it, and it was a low mileage fairly new vehicle. We had brought the vehicle into a shop that was recommended by the dealer to have it looked at and they diagnosed the issue and it required immediate repair before being able to drive the car again. The dealer was hesitating to write off on having REQUIRED parts changed out that are done anytime this kind of work is done because they claimed it didn't need to be done so they wouldn't pay for it. Eventually got them to agreed on the repair. But the repair shop discovered that the vehicle had really old sludgy oil and the air filter was solid black as if it never was changed. Funny thing is that we were told that oil, oil filter and air filter get changed before the car is sold... I'm going to call BS on that as a former automotive worker because it is IMPOSSIBLE to get a brand new air filter in this climate to turn solid black in less than 400 miles of driving. What else is wrong with the car that they didn't address or disclose? The funny thing is that the oil change situation happen to us with the other car we had purchased from them last year, and I stupidly didn't bother to check before we left with the vehicle. Last night we bought our first car! We found what we liked on the website and made an appointment for later that day to come in and buy it. Todd was our Carmax guy and he was awesome! Super friendly and extremely educated on all the vehicles. He showed us all the bells and whistles and made everything seem really fast, easy and EXCITING! We got there about 4:15 for a 4:30 appointment. We were taken right away and because we went online and scheduled for a specific car, it was ready for us to test drive right away.
