Extremely Disappointed -- 125-Point Inspection Is Misleading. I purchased a vehicle from CarMax based on their advertised 125-point inspection, and I am extremely disappointed. Less than two months after purchase, I took the car to Midas for a routine oil change and was told the vehicle had worn rear brakes, a potential oil leak, a cracked driveshaft, low fluids, and filthy cabin and engine filters. These issues clearly existed before I bought the car. When I returned to CarMax, they initially suggested it might be my fault, despite the short ownership period. Photos from Midas proved otherwise. CarMax did provide a loaner, which I appreciate, but their service department has had my car for over 24 hours without even running diagnostics. They have called to ask about the loaner and to say they are have not gotten to my car yet and cannot give a timeline for when my car will be checked or repaired because they are busy. This is especially frustrating during the holiday travel season, when I would much rather have my own vehicle. Overall, I am very disappointed with both the sales process and the service department. I would strongly recommend getting an independent inspection before purchasing from CarMax, regardless of their inspection claims. read more

The WORST service department in all of Naples. That is the plain truth. They never answer the phone. They dont follow up. The make you wait for appointments for weeks stating " we are too small to handle the volume of business we have" Then they say their warranty they sell you is a different company CNA even though they call it Carmax Extended care. Unfortunately my dad has dementia, so his driving privileges have been revoked. It's a stressful time, and the last thing we need is more stress, right? So we brought my dads vehicle in to see if they would purchase it from us. I know places like this salivate at people who are desperate. We weren't desperate, but we didn't have extra time to put the truck up for sale ourselves and deal with all the haggling and no shows. We've never dealt with CarMax before. From the moment we stepped foot inside- we were enthusiastically welcomed. They run a well-oiled machine. Every level was smooth and professional. It took maybe an hour for them to inspect the truck, get all of our information, run backgrounds and offer us a number. The amount offered was respectful- and we didn't feel taken advantage of one bit. They quickly cut a check and we were on our way. I put a hold on a vehicle yesterday. called today to complete the transfer. I completed the transfer, I spent $250and was called later by CarMax to say the vehicle was "being test driven". I told the sales rep that I had a hold on the vehicle and I asked when my hold expired. He could not give me a straight answer. But he did say that it somehow magically expired the moment the test driver got to the lot. He couldn't tell me if it expired in 24 hours, 36 hours a week or anything. Then I called again and tried to speak with another rep or a manager. The sales rep that I spoke to, could not give me definitive, quantifiable information. Her answers to my question kept changing. At first she told me that the hold expires after 5 to 7 business days and after I explain to her my situation and that I just placed the hold yesterday, less than 24 hours, she then explained that the length of the hold magically changed to less than 24 hours. With me having a verified hold on the vehicle, they sold it out from under me. First time I've ever attempted to use car max, and it absolutely will never, ever, ever happen again. I would not use them if I were you. They clearly do not honor, know or follow their own processes. I'm not sure if they offer any kind of warranty or any follow up service after the purchase, but I can guarantee you, they have difficulty holding up their end of the deal. If you can't be trusted to do the little things that don't matter, how can you convince anyone that you can do the things that really do matter? read more

I purchased a Lexus IS 300 and have had it for a couple years. I've had to do both sets of brakes and a few oil changes. I've serviced the transmission, put 50,000 miles on it and most of my service has been done at CarMax. The car's been a peach. I worked in the car business for 10 years and CarMax removes the headaches. I don't want to advertise my car and have God-knows-who showing up God-knows-when with a post dated check. That said, I was a bit disappointed with the lack of flexibility. I simply asked if they could review it or possibly match it, as I preferred to do business with CarMax. Unfortunately, the offer wasn't reviewed at all, and I was told very directly that the price was final and that I should go with Carvana if I wanted that deal. While I respect their no-negotiation model, the interaction felt somewhat dismissive and gave the impression that retaining my business wasn't a priority. The CarMax experience is anything but pleasant. Their customer service is awful! Purchased a one year-old vehicle and took it for an independent inspection. The inspection discovered the vehicle's rear axle beam was bent and the reason for the alignment. I immediately contacted CarMax to request that the issue be corrected as I was departing town in approximately two weeks with the vehicle. Complete chaos and unresponsiveness from CarMax and their service department. It seems their new slogan should be: SAY ONE THING BUT DO THE OPPOSITE." I am leaving town and it does not appear that I will have my car back in time. By the way, I thought CarMax performed an extensive inspection of every vehicle sold by them. I went to Carmax to get my parent's car appraised last Monday morning, on MLK Day. The supervisor on duty that morning greeted us immediately and was very polite and quick to assign us to Allen Prudhomme, the Sales Consultant that would be helping us in the transaction. In the first five mins of meeting him, i was kind of bummed that we wouldn't also buy a car with Carmax because I knew that Allen would've made a stressful process so much easier! Right out of the gate, he was exceptionally attentive. Especially warm with my retired parents, which I appreciated! He offered to show us cars but wasn't pushy or less helpful when we declined. We got an appraisal in under an hour and could've obtained our check right there and there had we decided to sell. Instead we sold the car to a friend, but the appraisal was very helpful! While the value is good at Car Max, I was extremely disappointed that I paid $99 to have a car shipped to the Naples Florida facility. When I took it out for a test drive the turbo was shot and making a screaming noise and the proprietary toolkit require to even change a tire was missing. Obviously the vehicle had not been checked out before shipping. In my opinion the shipping cost should have been refunded. If you do use Car Max, NEVER pay to have one shipped. We have bought a lot of cars in the past and our credit is EXCELLENT (750+) Not only the sales guy Chris, was inexperienced in the business, but also lacked of professionalism. My Mother, in her 80's, went to CarMax to buy a car as her deceased husband, my step-father was a fan of CarMax. She bought a beautiful Prius for $20,000. Unfortunately a week after she had the car it began to stink of cigarettes. The car's interior had been sprayed with some air freshener to mask the smell. It was not a smoke free car as described. This was the absolute worst car buying experience I have every had! Purchased a 2018 volvo with 12K miles on it Sunday. By the time I got home there was a warning light on. Called and was told by John in the service dept. to "take it to Volvo since it is under warranty." Volvo says they can't get it in for a week and I explain to John that I need to drive it to Miami on Friday. His response - the issue won't impact my driving to Miami. Fast forward to Tues and 2 more warning lights are on - parking break temporarily not available and tire pressure issue needs service. Call John all to be told - "take it to Volvo." Seriously it's been 48 hours since I bought it and that is all you offer me. So, went to Volvo and bought a Volvo from them and returned the Lemon to CarMax. Walk in and all they said was return the 2 keys and make sure it has a full tank of gas to which I said you can go fill the tank yourselves! Meanwhile another woman is sitting there and she says she bought a car 2 weeks ago and the check engine light is on. I hear John telling her the oil pump or something went bad and they don't fix that and they will have to have it sent to another shop for service - not sure when they can get it in or how fast it can be fixed. Steer clear - they clearly don't do a thorough inspection and if the car is in the shop your 30 day trial really isn't a 30 day trial. I missed work and the hassle was definitely not worth it! read more
