I purchased a car from Carmax and drove it for three weeks. During that time, I had it checked out by a reputable car mechanic, and it had very serious problems, including engine/oil leaks, etc. I took it back to the store to let them fix it. We are going on a month, the car is still there. Why in the world am I in this situation because Carmax should never have sold a car in this condition to a customer (Lexus RX350)? I have been without my car now for longer than I had it. I can return it, but I am moving out of State in two weeks and now I have to find another car? Why was this car allowed to be sold at Carmax with these issues? That is my question. I will follow up with legal counsel. An absolute nightmare from start to (legal action) finish! We came back to Carmax as previous happy Carmax customers and to our dismay, we have never been screwed so hard as we have been on our recent purchase. We were sold a car that had 8 issues that we brought back to their service department to fix. By brought back I mean had the car towed back because it wouldn't even start (2015 car with 25,000 miles on it). Service had bs answers for why they wouldn't fix 4 of them and then took a week "fixing" the other 4, only for us to then take the car to a gm dealer for inspection (carmax's idea) and two of the four "fixed" issues were still present. Car wouldn't start there either. After a week of gm doing repairs, we then returned to Carmax to cash in on the 30 day "repair or replace" warranty and just kidding! What they mean by that is you can sell us the POS car we sold you for less than you paid. Then you can buy a new car from us at a horrible financing rate bc you have bought two cars in one month and your first car ate any available down payment. "We have done everything we can, we can't control the financing department." Bottom line is if you ever buy a car from here you must first drive it directly to a trusted mechanic and if that person finds even one issue, return the car immediately during the first five days for a refund. There will for sure be more issues hiding and Carmax will be chomping at the bit to screw you. They claim to do a 120 point inspection, but for them to have missed such major safety concerns on the car they sold us is highly actionable. I look forward to filing complaints in every place I can find. read more

This was our first time buying a car from Carmax. We usually buy new but this time we were in the market for a used car. We lucked into Adam Duncan as our salesman. He was polite, friendly, knowledgeable and professional. The first car we asked about was at the far end of the lot so he went and brought it up to the showroom door so we wouldn't have to walk. That car was too big. I asked if he had a Toyota Corolla with a power seat. He went and checked his inventory. He did have one. My wife fell in love with the interior. We bought the car after a short test drive. There were some dings in the dash that Adam said they would take care of. A couple of days later we went in to pick up the car. Scott Harrington from the service department had called us to let us know how the dash repairs were going. He called us again when the car was ready. The dash looks great. After we picked up the car we noticed the rear license plate was loose. The screws couldn't be tightened because sheet metal screws had been forced into a machine screw thread. We called Scott to make an appointment to get it fixed. We took it in today and the repair was made in a timely manner. Bottom line: Carmax in Naperville was the most painless car buying experience we have ever had in decades of car buying. Kudos to Adam Duncan in Sales and Scott Harrington in the Service department. Went to purchase a Buick Encore I had transferred from another location. When they pulled it up it was the wrong color. I was told there must have been a typo in the listing. Asked how to use remote start - salesman told me there was no remote start. Looked on the window sticker and it was listed as an option, among many others. Was supposed to be a Buick Encore Preferred II package. They told me they would add it if I brought the vehicle in. Thought it was weird but I went ahead with the purchase, Within an hour of getting it home, found it was missing a lot of other items listed on the window sticker. Ran the VIN and found it was not a Preferred II package but a base model package! I took the vehicle back and explained they sold me the wrong vehicle. They searched and found another vehicle to transfer in, but it had some extra features and was not an even trade. I agreed to pay $500 more for the upgraded vehicle. Waited 2 weeks and I got a call the vehicle was in but that there was a title issue and it would be several weeks before it was cleared up. HUH? How do you advertise a vehicle for sale if you don't own it? Salesman told me he had worked there for 2 years and there were a lot of title issues lately! Salesman found another vehicle very similar to the first vehicle but wanted to sell it to me at $1,000 higher than the original vehicle price. NO WAY! Then I was told I had to wait 2 weeks to get my original down payment back. Entire ordeal went on for almost a month and I still don't have a car or my down payment Thanks for NOTHING Carmax! read more

People are nice but I tried to do the sale online including appraisal. Note complicated sale for me and carmax was good about handling it. The only thing I have complaints about is not being given proper notice that the appraisal has expired the day of me driving 6 hours to the site. This was a mistake on there part. First off you should know that Carmax is a dumping ground for cars the dealers don't want on their lots. I have had more than one dealer tell me to go to Carmax when my car was not the same make, or was older than 2 years. Second, I have sold more than one car to Carmax. This particular Carmax gave me 2 wildly different quotes on a perfect condition BMW only 3 months apart. While both quotes were lowball offers, when I questioned the worst one, they tried to tell me the car had been in an accident when it clearly had not! Some inspection. When I asked just where exactly was the supposed damage repaired, the guy just walked away! I ended up getting a 40% higher tradein from a stealer even when buying a new car at an employee discount price. Third, if you think that a shiny building and lot will give you a better used car value than some guy down the street or a stealer, you're kidding yourself. Carmax lowballs sellers and then charges the highest perfect condition price you'll find on the web. This is why they are still in business folks. We bought a Jeep from CarMax in Dec 2010, it had a clean carfax report and with the 126 point inspection we were confident that we had a good car. We would have NEVER HAVE BOUGHT IT if it had an accident attached to it. We sold it yesterday - it turns out it DID HAVE AN ACCIDENT before it was sold to us by CarMax, it just hadn't hit the carfax reports - even though the accident was in January 2010 - 9 months beforehand! Hmmm suspicious!!. After doing a bit of research - this is COMMON PRACTICE at places like this - the lag between when the insurance company settles and when it hits the carfax reports is how they get round this. Buyers beware. We had to take a much lower trade in value as we weren't able to sell the car easily with an accident attached to it. Sorry - but I will never buy from CARMAX every again because of this. read more

Bought a used car almost a year ago from CarMax. It was a little over $10K. I'd checked the internet while waiting and found the car on KBB.com retailed at $7K. Salesman convinced me it was due to their high standards that this car was priced higher. Paid for the extended warranty. Now just as the state tag remewal is due, the red check engine light comes on and the car won't pass iEPA inspection. Catalytic converter is considered a consumable and NOT COVERED on the bumper to bumper warranty. They also want $100 to read the diagnostic readout to check that it is the catalytic converter. And they'd only install an expensive OEM catalytic converter. Next time I buy from a GM dealer. read more

I've sold two cars here and bought two cars here personally and I've been with family members while purchasing cars here as well. I like it! The sales people are always very friendly and courteous. However, there have been a few times that the salesperson obviously didn't know what they were talking about, but they would look up the answer to be certain. I think you have to realize that they don't haggle here and be done with it. I love the no haggle pricing because, as a woman, I would statistically pay more than a man at another car dealership. I've had girlfriends go to other car dealers who wouldn't let them test drive a car because they weren't with their husbands! Ouch! You won't get that here. I feel I was treated fairly and the same way either with or without a man by my side for a purchase. With both trade-ins, I felt I got the same price or more than I would have if I were to try and sell it myself. I will definitely bring any future cars to them first to get an appraisal. Just don't let the 7 day waiting period end before you bring it back, as they will lower the appraisal the second time around. I think to sell my cars, I was there about an hour or so. It seems most of their used cars are old leased cars. Both my purchases were cars that were previously leased out. No problems with the first one and the second one we've owned for a couple months now. We ended up getting the extended Carmax warranty, mainly because it's an electric car. If something goes bust on it we want it covered. It was an extra $7 a month I think - totally doable for what you are getting. Overall, I would highly recommend! read more

Our 2001 Honda Accord, Ursula, was reaching the end of her life, and was about to fly off to that great auto yard in the sky any day. So with the helpful people here at Carmax, we put her down with dignity, and brought into our lives a 2012 Hyundai Elantra named Matilda. Car buying there was a painless, even enjoyable experience. We checked online two days before our visit, and put a hold on the car we were interested in, and made an appointment for a test drive. We received email confirmation, that our salesperson (Herman) would meet us at 10:00am. Truly, I have never encountered such a well run machine. We got there, immediately did our test drive, and decided to buy. The process took a long time, but that was to be expected. From beginning to end, our purchase was handled courteously, professionally, and overall exceptionally. Carmax will accept anything as a trade in, and we got $800 for our dying Honda, which was $500 more than we expected, which was a nice surprise. The other great thing about this place was little pressure to get all the bells and whistles. Everything under the sun was offered (theft protection, clear coat, XM radio, insurance, car care packages), but there was no pressure at all to purchase. We did sign up for the maintenance package since it was a very good deal. I will readily admit I probably would not go used car shopping elsewhere. Hopefully it will be a long time before I need their services again, but they do have a customer for life! read more

So this is from the perspective of selling my car, not buying one. I went in last night around 7:00pm to get my car appraised. When you walk in, you don't get bombarded by sales people drooling over the potential commission they can get out of you, which is a relief. I walked up to the counter and spoke with Ben. He asked what I was there for and told me that the wait is about 10-20 minutes because they were abnormally busy for appraisals. He said just to walk around or hangout in the waiting area and they'll find me. About 10 minutes later, still waiting, Ben came up to me to apologize for the wait, which wasn't a big deal. I appreciated him being on top of it and keeping me in the loop. Another 10 minutes passed and I was approached by Sarah. She was the nicest woman I have met. Very real. We went out to my car, she walked me through the process of what they were going to look for and how they determine pricing. We waited in her office as Luis appraised the car. We talked about life, her son, my family and had a really great conversation. It wasn't awkward or forced. After My car was done being evaluates she walked me through everything they looked at and what the conditions were. It was very transparent. I got a quote which was what I was expecting to get. The cool thing is I have 7 days to decide. After I left I realized the process took over an hour. That's a little longer than what I was expecting but no skin off my nose. All in all it was a great experience and broke the stigma of a dealership. I will absolutely come here to buy and sell my future cars. read more

I am within my 30 day return policy on the vehicle. Bought a 2016 Ram 1500 Bighorn with low mileage (15k miles). Took it back once because the backup camera immediately went bad. On Monday night, I had my engine light turn on. I dropped the car off on Tuesday before it opened. Service department is open until 6:00. Got a call back after 5 PM telling me that they haven't quite diagnosed the problem and that they would call me WEdnesday with a status update. I called twice Wednesday during the day and did not get a call back until 5:45 PM. This time I was told the same thing... they haven't diagnosed the problem yet. Took my DL and insurance information so that perhaps I could have a loaner car Thursday if my car wasn't done. It is now 4:10 PM on Thursday, and you guessed it: I've heard nothing and have left 3 messages as to status. 3 days without a vehicle and no news on a loaner. I have no transportation and no courtesy call to advise me as to what is going on. I'm ok if my car hasn't been looked at, but no excuse for not keeping me in the loop after 3 business days. I want to pick up a loaner, but my service rep has yet to call me back. Shit way to run a "service" especially when I am still within my 30 days of purchase and can still say: "Just keep it and give me money back". read more

At around 11/05, I was in the car market for a used Taurus that was about 1-3 years old so, I considered Carmax after striking out at a few dealerships. So I searched their car database online & found exactly what I was looking for at the Naperville location. Went inside, showed the salesman the printout of the car, forgo the test drive, and immediately moved to the paperwork phase. Carmax really makes the average car buying process a breeze and each of the salesmen take turns when each customer comes in so there's no typical car salesmen tactics when you're there. I didn't have any established credit but, Carmax owns about 7 different loan agencies so in about 20 minutes, you'll get an answer from each institution regarding loan approval and its term based on your credit, down payment amount and such. By the next day, I drove away in my new car. However, it almost didn't happen. If you're choosing to have a co-signer on the loan, the co-signer psychically must be there or else no dice. My co-signer couldn't make it so, the salesman was nice enough to drive all the way to my co-signer's place of work in Oak Lawn just to get the paper's signed. Be careful if you're planning to do a trade-in because you won't get the blue book amount for it. Also, I didn't like how after I bought the car, the driver's side speaker blew out and never got an answer from that salesman after numerous voice messages. Don't remember the salesman's name but, he looked like actor Martin Mull who played Roseanne's boss Leon on her t.v. show. With that aside, I always recommend this place to everyone. 9 days ago I transferred a 2015 Traverse in Silver from CarMax Tinley Park location to Naperville. Our sales representative called me to confirm they received it and we made an appointment for Saturday to look at it. An hour before our appointment he calls to tell me they sold it Friday night. Some how they screwed up and didn't keep the car on hold. Needless to say I was not pleased. My husband and I called around because I had my heart set on Silver. Searching on the internet we found a 2016 with 23K at Carmax in Tinley Park. I called the Tinley Park store and spoke to the manager and explained the situation and told him our price range we were looking to spend (which is what the 2015 cost that they sold on us). We inquired about them dropping the price $1K. We were told "no". We also called the Naperville store and asked our sales representative Jim if they could do anything with the price for his mistake, again we were told no. Jim did drive out to Hillside and picked up a 2014 with less miles for us to look at. We test drove it and ended up purchasing that vehicle on Monday, October 24th. The issue I'm frustrated about is this morning I received a pop up about the 2016 Traverse in Tinley Park and now they dropped the price a $1K. Only 5 days later the price was dropped!!!! I'm aggreviated that neither Carmax location would budge on the price for their mistakes and to turn around 5 days later and lower the price. It is a newer model with 4K more miles than the car we purchased and the color I originally wanted. Very disappointed this morning. On a good note...we ended up working with a different sales rep at the Naperville location Carrie which was wonderful and very patient with us because I had my mind set on the Silver. I had to go home on Saturday and think it through which we decided to purchase the 2014 Charcoal Gray Traverse. Stopped into the Naperville CarMax and honestly cannot say enough great things about them, everyone we encountered who worked there was extremely welcoming, nice, and willing to help. We came in looking to get our 2015 Kia Optima appraised, we had already gone to a dealership that left us less than happy with their offer, so we figured we would try CarMax and see what all the hype was about. We are so glad that we did! We walked in on Saturday 12/3/16, didn't make an appointment since we were stopping by after another errand and didn't know the exact time we'd be able to make it. Anyway, we were greeted and told we would be put on a waiting list, it would be about a 20 minute wait to get the process started and then about 40 minutes to get our appraisal. Only a few minutes later, we were introduced to Edwin Huerta to begin! SO QUICK!! Edwin was GREAT, he was able to clearly explain their process and answer our questions. While we were waiting we talked and told him about the car we were looking to buy, he explained their sales process, which seems very straight-forward and quite honestly, appealing! Not even 20 minutes had passed when he said our appraisal was ready, they came in at a VERY FAIR APPRAISAL, offered us $5,000 more than the dealership we had stopped in at. Plus, if we were to buy a car from them, they would give us a $1,400 credit toward our sales tax on the new car. Love that they offer a 7-day guarantee on their offer, we decided to wait to sell until we had our next car picked. We really wish CarMax had our dream car on a local lot, however, the closest ones we like are in North Carolina and Florida, being that we are in IL, we would have to pay a $500 transfer fee to see the car and make a decision - which is a risk we decided not to take, so ultimately we decided to buy our new car with a local dealership. We did stop in to CarMax in Schaumburg to sell them our car on 12/5/16 and we again were VERY IMPRESSED by the service we received, it was quick, easy and hassle-free. Unfortunately I don't remember the gentleman's name who we worked with, believe it started with an H, last name Acala. WE ARE ALREADY RECOMMENDING CARMAX TO OUR FAMILY, and will continue to do so. Went with a pal to check out vehicles. She had some specific requirements and we thought we'd have a quick check of what was available. WRONG. CarMax USED to be the place to go to buy a decent used vehicle. Unfortunately, their standards and practices have changed a lot over the years. The door 'greeter' was really a salesman - and whole the idea of coming here meant not having to deal with salesmen. He was friendly but... and I say BIG BUT.... he wouldn't back off. Despite answering politely 'just looking around' and walking past him, this guy wouldn't take the hint to leave us alone! I know how to work a mouse and a browser thank you very much, and don't need you hovering over us to 'help'. My friend, with far more patience than I, hangs with the salesman for FAR too long. She is originally from Detroit, her family worked for GM, and flat out tells him she isn't interested in a foreign vehicle. He then starts up an entire dialog about how every vehicle is made from parts manufactured all over the globe, and proceeds to explain that many foreign vehicles are made in the USA. Here's the rub - WHO CARES! She was clear and said it more than once: NOT INTERESTED. Did he take the hint again?? Nope. We eventually ran him off and browsed on by ourselves. As we began getting materials together to walk the lot, he returned again, this time with a printout in hand (business card attached, of course) for a HONDA. Yes, that's right. FOREIGN. The look on her face was priceless as he continued to spout his rhetoric about vehicles made all over the globe and then, without prompting, starts talking about how he makes a flat commission no matter what car she picks and...wait for it... adds that he has nothing to gain by 'steering' her to a vehicle that is over the price range she has selected! WHAT? Wow buddy, in case you missed it about 15 minutes ago, no matter what we do next, you aren't gonna see any commission from this trip. Guaranteed. We grabbed our papers and went to walk the lot... alone. Vehicle 1: Not in the slot. Vehicle 2: Not in the slot, found it in a different one, with a SOLD tag on it. Vehicle 3: Not in the slot. Vehicle 4: Locked! Despite finding some of them by pure chance, we were SHOCKED that they weren't clean inside. Why not?? One smelled like dead animal, another smelled like nasty smoke, one was very dirty inside. If this is how you 'showcase' your merchandise, I wonder how closely someone is following that 120 point mechanical inspection checklist! Seems that someone was rearranging all the cars on the lot, so what the computer had was NOT where the vehicles were located at. We found a car porter who told us he was moving things around and that a SOLD tag doesn't mean "sold". Yes well, that can only mean one thing....these vehicles came from AUCTION and those were the AUCTION SOLD tags! My friend is planning on taking her business elsewhere. I don't blame her one bit. In the meantime, being that I am not from Detroit, I'll be saving for the Tesla 3! :) read more

We bought a 2009 HHR here a few years ago which we still have and has been very reliable, so no anxiety about returning. The salesman talked through a lot of different options for us and gave us stock numbers to search online before we even went to the location. This helped us hone down a price range as he was very helpful with approximating our monthly payment every step of the way to keep us in budget. We wound up finding a Toyota Rav 4 that was on a lot in Wisconsin, they transferred it here at no cost and it was instantly removed from their online catalog so that it was held for us. Much of our financing was done via phone, so when we went to purchase we were barely there for an hour before we left with our new car. Traded in my previous car (that was originally financed through Carmax auto finance) and Purchased a new car on October 11 (financed through my bank) at Carmax Naperville. It is now three weeks later and I'm being charged late fees on a car that I traded in and no longer own. I did everything on my part correct. When I called Carmax to ask about the situation, I was spoke to like it was my fault and given to explanation and told they sent a check and I need to call Carmax auto finance to figure it out. When I asked to speak to a supervisor, the gentleman hung up on me. Called back Carmax auto finance and waited an hour on the phone to speak to someone who could help me. They told me that Carmax Naperville sent the check to the wrong address, and now that check needed to be voided and resent. I was advised to make a payment (almost a $400 payment on a vehicle I DO NOT OWN) to prevent it affecting my credit. This whole situation is ridiculous and i will NEVER purchase from Carmax again, and I recommend that you avoid Carmax Naperville as well. read more

Horrible. Spent months researching a vehicle and paid $199 to have it shipped from Kentucky. Due date arrives and there is title problems, pushing date back weeks. You would think these geniuses possibly would have investigated this BEFORE charging me $199 to have it shipped and putting a potential customer through this. Avoid this place. If the general public picks up on the Carmax policy (no pressure, no haggle, one person from beginning to end of the sales process), traditional Dealerships are in trouble. This was a fantastic experience, the reps are friendly and knowledgeable and the overall experience is very positive. If you need to buy a vehicle, go this route. First off, not sure why it say's I'm in Cali, but I am local. Very disappointed in my overall experience. Bought a car 2 years ago and service was great, but within the last 2 years, I have had to spend about 4k and counting in huge repairs. Withing those 2 years, I didn't drive for 8 months. At the rate I am going with repairs, which I feel shouldn't need to worry about after their inspection, I will be putting more money in repairs than what the car is worth. Very hesitant to refer anyone to CarMax of Naperville. As a family, we have bought 5 cars in the past from them and I am questioning if I will again. Certainly looking to replace what I thought was a car I'd have for the next 8 years, but after this, I'm not sure the trust is there anymore. read more

I've been meaning to post this for some time. I purchased a ranger rover sport from CarMax. Huge mistake. The car had black ants in the back seat! An army of ants! Took it back in and they claimed to have cleaned them out. They continued to come crawling all over my children!! They replaced the car with another model with fewer features. 6 months later the engine blew requiring me to spend over $6k to replace it and not at CarMax since they have little experience with even balancing tires on luxury vehicles. The windshield was also replaced by the previous owner and when i purchased it it leaked during a heavy rain storm. Stay away from buying luxury cars at CarMax!!!! read more

I was super close to buying a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze. We were so close to driving away. Then finally the salesman says, "Wait, your job is a delivery driver? That would make it commercial use, so the vehicle can't be financed." One of the VERY FIRST things we went over was my personal info, including the company I work for and my job title. I clearly told him my job was a delivery driver. The fact that I was a delivery driver was clearly stated to the salesman at least 5 times through the buying process, and not once did he mention that financing would no longer be an option. So why in the world did the salesman waste 3 hours of my time, then all of the sudden tell me it wouldn't work, when he knew the whole time? Look, I'm not mad that I can't finance a car as a delivery driver. I was going to run into that sooner or later. But I am ABSOLUTELY LIVID that the salesman waited 3 hours to tell me that, when it was stated to him multiple times I was a delivery driver. I'm now more than likely going to lose my job because I now don't have a car to drive. If you have any sense, do NOT waste your time here. Their sales staff clearly have no idea what they're doing. The only thing they're good at is getting your hopes up, wasting your time, and effectively letting you down. read more

This Car Max is the PITS. DON'T GO HERE!!! My son and husband went to sell my car and I was out of town. Car Max said they needed a POA BUT THE STUPID WOMAN NEVER GAVE THEM THE DOCUMENTS. So in the meantime I went online and downloaded one. I wasted the money buying the POA online and on the notary because when my son presented it to Car Max they would not accept it and said we needed their POA and another document. So my son traveled over 100 miles where I was staying just so I could fill out Car Max documents and pay ONCE AGAIN FOR A NOTARY. When my son took the documents back to Car Max Car Max said they would not accept them because I scratched out my signature and wrote it again. The notary told me I had to sign in her presence and that was the reason for the scratch outs. In the end CAR MAX IS UNREASONABLE AND DIFFICULT TO DEAL WITH. I am glad I am out of town because I would give the manager my piece of mind. I don't have time for this drama and pettiness!!! read more
