Not impressed. I was impressed with my sales person and how smooth my first interaction had gone. Now I'm just plain angry. I went in there to speak to someone and have a car transferred from CT. I ended up noticing a different car in MA that was the same thing with more options. That was Saturday, it's now Thursday night and the car is still not there. I was told it could take up to 7 days because it was from a different state. Right, whatever. There is no reason that car should not have been in Cranston on Tuesday and ready for me by Wednesday afternoon at the latest. I could have driven a hour and a half and had the car for 5 days. The waiting game is getting old. Again, the sales person I was working with was excellent. He was clearly new, but still was honest and clear with everything. I'm still baffled that it takes so long for a car to be transferred from Danvers, MA to Cranston, RI. You may have lost a sale. Update 12/24: 2 emails and 1 text to my sales person and not a peep. It's 2pm on Christmas Eve and they are already closed?! This is getting old. If I don't have the car in hand on Monday, I will make sure to update my review and Carmax to the BBB. read more

Worst car buying experience I've ever had!! Car is great, got a good deal and was happy there, it was everything after with the business office and management that ruined this place for me. They never registered my car, I got pulled over for expired temp tags, so I called back Carmax and they messed up the paperwork and forgot to tell me that I had to come back in to resign the registration. They did put me in a crappy rental at least, but then a few days later I had to come BACK in because they screwed up the paperwork AGAIN with the DMV!!! Then the third time I finally came to pick up my car and management had no idea what was going on. Management is clueless, and does not know how to run a business here. read more

I went to get a quote on an old car which admittedly was in very bad shape. I got a very low quote but that's not what put me off. Rather it were the reasons given for a low quote and how CarMax was being deceptive with facts on the vehicle report that upset me. They told me the car had 4 owners when in fact there were only 2. They were reporting 4 because I had lived in 3 states and had the car registered in each of these. I would expect CarMax to be able to distinguish between change of registration and change of ownership. Further, I was informed that the the odometer had been tampered with. When I pressed the sales person on how he made that determination, he gave me an explanation that I don't agree with at all. It seems the last state I lived in put odometer reading as 'exempt' ( I don't recollect the exact terminology). This simply means to issue a new title in that state (Utah), their DMV didn't check the odometer; it doesn't mean the odometer has been tampered with. Further, I relocated to Rhode Island subsequently and they were able to validate the odometer reading and the title said so. CarMax chose not to take into consideration what was said about the the odometer in the latest title I had. I managed to sell the car to a corner lot dealer (not a private party) for 3.5 times the amount. I would think twice about going to CarMax for anything in the future given my experience with being low balled for this sale. Other than that, their facilities were nice, clean and comfortable. Guess what I had to buy a tire because I bought it at night and didn't see it ... Once u drive it off the lot NOBODY THERE CARES!!!!! I got the bad tire and going to file a formal complaint with Kevin at the dealers commission..then going to the state safety emissions to have the vehicle checked DONT TRUST THEM.... Went in to see a Fiat that had just arrived at the Cranston CarMax and liked it. I was told it would be put on hold for one week. And it was: I saw the "reserved" tag they had placed on the Fiat's rearview mirror. Went back three days later for an appt. to take a test drive and was told my Fiat had been "transferred." None of the 4 different young guys (all guys) in my brief 3-day encounter with CarMax seemed to know much about the car, the hold, what happened to the hold, etc. Why no quick call to me before selling the car? Instead, I have to show up for my appointment to be told it's gone?? End of unhappy story, will never look into CarMax again. read more

Lexus from CarMax was terrific. From the first phone contact to two weeks after I had my vehicle, she was there every step of the way. I appreciated the "no haggle" policy. I had to order the car and pay to have it shipped -- but I didn't mind -- as it was the car I wanted. The car was clean and ready to go when I arrived to pick it up. I was expecting more for my car (I traded it in), but I understand they give you only what they expect to get at auction for your car (mine was a 2006 with high mileage). Literally the worst experience I have ever had with a car dealership. Avoid at all costs. I found the car that I wanted online, unfortunately for me it was for sale at the Carmax on Bald Hill Rd. I have to admit, the place looks nice, and I guess it's my fault for judging a book by its cover. I test drove the car that I wanted, a Cadillac CTS with my sales rep Drew. During the test drive there was a small rattle coming from the car. Drew said that he would have technicians look in to it when we returned. I was then told that the car needed a strut. That the repair would only take an hour and if I purchased the vehicle I could come in the next day to get the car repaired. Seemed simple enough. I loved the car so I went ahead and signed the paperwork and purchased the insurance and handed over a hefty cash deposit. I show up for the repairs and nobody knows that I was coming, I hear a whole song and a dance about being short staffed, etc. They take my car and what should be an hour turned in to an 8 day nightmare made worse by the terrible customer communication and service at this location. First they told me that they misdiagnosed the problem and it needed something else and that their technicians were not capable of fixing the car. At this point I spoke to a sales manager named Eric. Eric was pretty dismissive, I asked if I could have a comparable loaner car to what I purchased and I was told no, I asked if he could have the sales rep Drew call me so that I can discuss exchanging the car, he said he would and I never got a call. I cannot properly articulate how poorly Eric handled the situation but in my entire history of buying anything at a store level he was the least effective and helpful "manager" I have ever interacted with, at one point he actually said to me "You know how it is buying a car, sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't". Not something someone who just outlayed thousands of dollars wants to hear. I then inquired about returning the car, they said I wouldn't be able to get back the thousands I put down on the car until it was mailed to me, who knows how long that process takes. The car was then sent to a dealership and I was told that it would be ready when they get to it as carmax doesn't get priority. I asked for another call with a time frame, nothing. I called and asked for another call and nothing, etc... For a total of 13 call back promises that never happened. Finally I was told my car would be ready "Tuesday night, at the latest Wednesday morning" So I planned my schedule around that. Tuesday comes and goes and the car isn't ready, wednesday morning comes and goes and the car isn't ready, finally Wednesday night a full 8 days after I left them the car and 9 days after they sold it to me... the car is returned. When I asked about the poor service Eric tells me "I will give you and oil change coupon and extend your FIVE day return period." I want that in writing, obviously nothing. Not only will I never do business with carmax again but I will without a doubt make everyone I know aware of exactly how terrible every single level of service is at this place. How a company can dump so much money in to a building and then fail at the most basic functions is beyond me, if I ran my business the way that they run theirs I would not at all be surprised if my doors closed. read more

I was really hoping this was going to be an awesome experience and had called ahead and explained to them everything. When I got there, everything we had talked about was not possible and they apologized for someone giving me bad information. Regardless, I went in to have my car appraised, I got exactly what I was hoping for. They have plenty of places to sit and relax, watch tv, get work done, grab a coffee or tea etc. they were extremely busy so from the time I arrived for an appraisal to the time I left it was 1.5 hours. It was simple, a bit more time consuming than I had hoped and left a bit upset that I was lied to. In the end, it looks like I will be car free within the next week!!! Whooo hoooo, I have much better ideas on how to spend that money each month!!! read more

I test drove a bunch of 3 row cars for a new family vehicle and the CarMax salesman sat in the back and acted out the part of 3 whiny children (including an infant) so I could "get a feel for what it would be like driving 3 kids around". So far, so good! I have poor credit (thanks to a divorce) and I had been to many other dealerships and could not get financed without $2K down on a $13,000 car (and I had a trade in valued at $1500). With Carmax, I did most of my application online (even picked out the car I wanted and had it transferred in from East Haven, CT.) They sent me an email with a link to my car page and I was able to read about the vehicle history before I went up for the test drive. (I thought that was pretty cool.) Went up on my birthday and drove off that day! (I added the vehicle to my insurance the day before I went up to CarMax.) Janet made it so easy that I almost didn't think it was going to happen. I remember thinking " ok when does the Finance Manager come out and tell me no" and that was with a PRE-approval in hand. I was there a total of 45 min from start to finish and left very happy. I am on day 4 and I love my car an love CarMax! So much so, that I sent my Sister-in-law to them and her experience was much the same. read more

Could not have had a better car buying experience! When i first got there i told the salesman exactly what i wanted to spend and what i was looking for.. we looked at cars and test drove them for a good 2-3 weeks. I ended up buying a truck. I loved it everything about it was amazing and it was exactly what i wanted! But unfortunately my commute to work was not the best due to the mileage. I called the salesman and thankfully he understood. It was within the 5 day return or exchange period. I brought it back with a heavy heart of course and we found the perfect vehicle for me! I would give them a 10 if I could. From the moment I walked in on Sunday, I was greeted immediately from a pleasant gentleman. We sat down at his desk and i said to my self "oh no here we go with the pressure and negotiations".......Actually it was just the opposite. He asked what brought me there and i told him , he said "Ok do you want to walk thru the lot and look around?" I said sure. We had pleasant conversation. I said oh I like that one over there. He said ok lets go look at it. I fell in love with it. Looked at the sticker. He read everything to me on the sticker. I took it for a drive. i told him i wanted it but only had $45.00 on me. He said "no problem, we will hold it for you" No money down, i asked. Nope. No signature? Nope. No negotiation? NOPE thats the price on the sticker. WOW. Buying a new car was, for my husband and I, something that we knew was going to have to happen in the very near future. Our Buick was on its last legs (wheels?) and dying quickly. Our mechanic did what he could, but he told us that the car wouldn't last the year. The repairs it needed cost beyond what we were willing to spend on the hunk of scrap, especially if we were hoping to have a decent down payment on a new car. I'd always been told that buying a car is a long, drawn-out, frustrating, exhausting process. I've read and heard about shady dealerships and shadier car salesmen and I'd read articles upon articles of shifty things dealerships did and how to be on the lookout for them. My husband and I assumed we'd have to do tons of research on each dealership on top of the research we were doing on car brands and models. Before we ever set foot into a dealership, we were already tired of the car-buying process. Truthfully, we didn't know CarMax was there until we drove past it one day on our way to Cranston. A few days later, we were in the area again and my husband suggested that we check out CarMax and see what their lot looked like. We walked in with zero expectations of buying a car that day. We thought it would be another month before we'd actually be buying a car. Immediately upon walking in, a kind-looking man named Noah approached us with a smile and asked how he could help us. We said we'd like to look at the lot (alone, preferably, so we could really get a look at the cars without being pressured by a salesman), and he showed us out to the lot and let us be. Within minutes, my husband and I had fallen in love with a car -- a 2014 Hyundai Elantra in deep blue. I even already knew what I would name the car. We went back inside to ask if we could test-drive it, and Noah got everything together for the test-drive, and he asked if we might be interested in getting our Buick appraised. He said it didn't come with an obligation to sell today, but that it might be a good idea to know what our car's trade-in value was worth. We agreed and took the Elantra for a spin. If we hadn't already loved the car, that cemented it. We returned to the dealership and went inside to start the paperwork. We got the Buick's appraisal back, agreed to sell the Buick to CarMax, and started the financing calculations. So that brought us to our first hiccup: we needed several documents that I didn't have with me, so we had to leave and get the documents and come back. We finished the financing calculator, and that lead us to our second hiccup: I'd gotten the title of the Buick renewed recently to match my married name, and I didn't have it with me. I know, I know, you should always keep it in the car, but that day was a stressful day for me, so it inadvertently got filed away at home. But you can't sell a car without the title, so it was off to our house a second time to find it. Finally, everything was all set. The financing was done, I handed the Buick over to them for good, and we were ready to pay the down payment and get the paperwork signed. And cue hiccup number three! The down payment was in my husband's bank account and it was more than his daily spending limit. No problem, right? Just call the bank and authorize it, right? Well, we'd spent so much time back and forth retrieving forgotten documents that the bank closed for the day, and it was a credit union so nobody was there to answer a phone call. So now what? I'd already given them the Buick. I'd driven it into their garage and handed the keys to Noah and he gave me the Buick's license plates and as far as I know, there are no take-backsies here. We couldn't take the new car from the lot, and we couldn't get the Buick back (nobody actually said we couldn't have the Buick back for the night, so I don't know if this was an option, honestly). How the heck were we supposed to get home now? Eventually I remembered that I was married to my husband and asked if we could take part of the down payment from my checking account instead and everybody breathed a sigh of relief. Paperwork got printed and signed, and six hours after we'd initially walked in, Noah led us to the garage to receive our new car. It even had a huge yellow bow on the hood! Now, at some point, one of the mechanics giving the car a last-looks noticed some damage to the passenger side rear door. I'd noticed it too, during the test drive when I got into the car, but honestly, I was willing to live with it. It wasn't a big deal to me. But the mechanic and one of the managers wrote up a work order on the car and said I could bring it back at any time to have the damage repaired, free of charge. Noah was extremely patient with us through the whole thing. He's a great guy and we're so glad we worked with him! Five stars. I'd write more, but I'm out of space! read more

Horrible experience. I purchased a 2015 Jeep Wrangler from car max with 24,000 miles on it. When I drove out of the lot I realized the car had not been cleaned on the inside at all and was filthy. I actually found frenchfries in the back from the previous owner from god knows how long ago. I was very excited so I decided to let it go and enjoy my new ride. A day later, while on the highway my Jeep began to drive funny and the check engine light came on. I took it to have the code checked and a transmission problem code was being displayed. I immediately called car max and they told me the Jeep was still under manufacturers warranty so I should call a dealership to have it checked out. I called a dealership and made an appointment to have it serviced. I then received a call from Carmax that I should bring in my Jeep to them and they would bring it to the dealer they use. I asked if I should cancel the appointment I had made on my own and was told that yes, I should. When I dropped it off I was treated very rudely by the girl who was there as if I was inconveniencing her. She never apologized for the situation, she actually never even looked at me the whole time. It was left there over the weekend and would be brought to the dealership for service Monday. I called Tuesday after not hearing back and was told I was supposed to have made an appointment and they never did. At that point I was beyond frustrated, and still under the 5 day money back garuntee so I returned the car. When I went to Carmax to do so and to retrieve my belongings from the car I was told by the manager the car wasn't there and that most people know better than to leave their things in a car being sent for service. I asked her to retrieve my things, and said that she was aware I was coming since early in the day. I had to wait an hour, and still not all of my things have been returned as of today. The good news is, I went to another dealership, got a 2017 Jeep Wrangler with only 52 miles on it, AND I'm actually paying $2k less than i was for 2015 with 24k miles. So thank you Carmax, your terrible service led me to a much better situation. read more

Today I went to carmax to sell my car in hopes of using the trade in as a downpayment for a new car. To my surprise, carmax not only offered me more money than expected, but they went above and beyond with their customer service (to the point where I felt a review was necessary and I never write reviews). I didn't buy a car at carmax but the manager offered to drive me home (45 minutes) after buying my car because I was unable to take home my new car today. I was honestly beyond impressed with everyone we encountered (Mike, Harley, Karen...the list goes on). They were friendly, accommodating, and made the process much easier (this was my first time buying and selling!). Thank you all! read more
