The car i scheduled to test drive had to be jumped before I could drive it. I was told you only get a 30 minute test drive which seems a little sketchy to me, I pulled over to a parking lot to check all the bells and whistles when the sunroof got stuck. My experience with Carmax was less than favorable. Here were my primary issues. (1) Carmax ran a hard credit check without my permission. They jumped from a "not impact to your credit" pre qualification to a hard credit inquiry. Had no idea until I got a notification from LIfelock. Who does this? I was already soured after this. (2) We had a car brought in to look at and, when it finally arrived, the tires on the car were literally dry rotted and cracking. This is after we were told the car was in like-new condition. (3) Carmax said they wanted to follow up and there has been zero effort on their end to follow up. I really like the idea of Carmax but they are clearly lacking on the personal touch with customers. My experience has turned me off completely...and we had money to spend with them. Sad. I hope your experience is better than ours. read more

More like 2.5 Stars. The process over all wasn't bad. I would not paid more the $99 for delivery because in retrospect I probably would not have accepted the car. Most of this was my fault because I assumed the car had been detailed as advertised and didn't look it over. I was told that once the car came in it would take up to three hours to clean up n be ready to go. After further examination there was a gray dust or residue here and there. When I drove back to the store to ask about the detailing/3 hour prep, they told me they vacuum them out and run them thru a car wash. I paid to have it detailed. When I called back to talk to the salesman about this, he didn't return my call. We were hesitant to buy an extended warranty we were assured it was bumper to bumper. I need to have a lawyer translate into layman terms. Plus I'll never buy something again that's buy it now or forget it. read more

To walk into one, you know that it's a great experience. But! There's a catch. They DON'T use Kelly Blue Book for the true resale value of their vehicles. With that being said, a car that should be resold at 13k, being listed at 16.9k or 17k. Though that includes tags, title, and registration, and that's clearly 3k+ more than what it should be. And that's just for a car I'm interested in and that's not all. Don't let them add on anything like a warranty. The one that was proposed to me took the final bill up from 16k to 24.5k... Who? What? My girlfriend bought a 2015 Kia Soul less than a year ago and had a death in the family recently that caused her to have to redo her insurance. Well no insurance companies will insure her car now because of how easy it is to steal so she went back to carmax to get a new car. Even though a brand new engine was installed during this year they appraised the once $16k car as $5k. So essentially she has to pay $8k more on a car that is fully worthless and now pay for an entire new car. Definitely be wary of criminal behavior when buying vehicles in the modern age. read more

As I wrote just last week, I was in need of purchasing a car. I chose CarMax because I bought my last car from them. I love the no haggling pricing. Everyone I encounter there are so nice and friendly. I never feel like they are swarming at me like a bunch of rabid car sales people. I had my chosen car transferred from another location to the Chattanooga location. I also put another car on hold to just compare the two very similar vehicles to decide which one I wanted to purchase. My sales person, Pam Meade, was busy with another customer when I came in on Friday. She had another sales guy, John, help me out. John had assisted me in test driving a couple of cars the week before. I checked out both vehicles and decided to go with the one with less miles on it, even though it didn't have all the bells and whistles the other vehicle had. The vehicle I chose, is not lacking in anyway, it just doesn't have a lot of add-ons. Hey, I've lived my whole life without a backup camera, I think I can still do without. - LOL. The pricing and loan agreement was explained to me very clearly and again, with great customer service and helpfulness. There were a couple of things that needed to be fixed on the vehicle, so a service request was put in and I spoke with the service manager who assured me that they would be able to deal with the issues. I have every confidence that they will. I really feel so much more comfortable dealing with CarMax and their business model as opposed to a traditional car dealership. CarMax really makes you feel welcomed there, like you're a part of the family. I appreciate that this helps take away some of the stress of a major purchase. read more

I had an amazing experience here. Every sales associate has been so polite and well mannered. The cars and building are in pristine condition and the complicated process of getting a car was lessened significantly with the help of the sales associate. They have thought of everything and take excellent care of you. They do not haggle, but because of that they are more willing to hold vehicles while you figure out your financing. Going vehicle shopping during the COVID-19 pandemic was a different experience, but all in all it was easy, fast, and professional experience through CarMax. I have been looking for a very specific car for a while now and happened to come across it on the CarMax website in GA. I submitted my finance request that same day and was approved by the end of the day. I had driven to GA to pick up my "new" car that same week. CarMax had the car waiting for me in the parking lot (I got there early and got to watch an employee wipe down the interior of the car with disinfectant after he moved it) I parked and called a number listed on the sign and a rep came out with the keys and paperwork for a test drive. Ended up deciding to buy the car and completed all of the paperwork in the parking lot. The only time I had to go inside was to swipe my card for the down payment. Once everything was completed, I headed back to TN and when I got here the vehicle service light came on. Rather than driving ALL the way to GA, I came to the CarMax in Chattanooga to see if they can resolve the issue. CarMax Chattanooga was able to work with me and ultimately I requested to get another vehicle. Since I was looking for a specific vehicle, at the moment, CarMax Chattanooga did not have the vehicle I was looking for in their inventory. They were going to bring the vehicle to Chattanooga. On that day, since I didn't have a vehicle, CarMax provided me with transportation to go home. Once my new vehicle arrived, they informed me and we checked for everything. I have been pleased with my new vehicle. I am appreciative of the excellent service received and the communications between CarMax's. My car broke down on me one day so I decided it was time for a new one, found out that I can shop online and have my new car brought to me, great convenience and needed badly since I have no time to go car shopping or to pick one up. I recently bought a truck from Carmax of Chattanooga and the experience was bad all throughout except for one person. Only one person followed through with their word to me and didn't lie to me and when they didn't know company policy they took the effort to find it out and get back with me on the answer to my question. All other 11 employees that I encountered lied to me repeatedly, and when I brought this up to each one I was consistently given the attitude and body language of "that is too bad for you, but I am not going to do anything about it because I just don't care" with words out of their mouths of "I'm sorry". The employees consistently demonstrated that they didn't care if they knew company policy or not, they would make up an answer to my questions just so they could make a sale and move on to someone else. One gave me a business card with a phone number and email that he never used and weren't working. Another example (I can't list them all here as there would be no room) is that the walk around where they can answer up to 5 questions before transporting it to your location for a fee, they completely lied and said there was zero rust under the truck and when the truck arrived there was moderate rust underneath the entire vehicle I was considering. MODERATE! not just minimal on a couple of small spots. The unprofessionalism at this location is large spread and deep. When one employee said they would fix and correct the lies and errors they and their company had told me and caused for me during this process he did the bare minimum to fix the issues. I wasn't asking for special privileges or treatment, I was just expecting and asking to be treated with respect and told the truth. The fact that there are so many employees that work with this same location who demonstrated repeated unprofessionalism and repeated lying would tend to show that this is more of a management issue where management is training and managing their people poorly. If it was just one or two employees that did this to me I would tend to think it was more them individually. In truth, it is probably a combination of both being the source of the problem. I can't say if the entire Carmac company is run like this, but the Chattanooga branch deserves less than one star and if I could have given it zero stars I would have. I recommend going to another branch if you decide you still prefer to buy from Carmax at all. read more

Previously, I had a long battle with corporate about needing help with a Jeep that was sold to me and I kept hitting wall after wall. This led to a lot of frustration and a bitter taste in my mouth with CarMax. I wasn't satisfied with my experience dealing with corporate until I brought our Jeep to Chattanooga CarMax for an inspection to give CarMax one more try to hopefully make things right. That's when I was greeted by Steve, Bobby and Zach. They completely changed my view of CarMax towards the better in just one visit! They helped in more ways than Corporate even thought about. Used Edmunds to get an online offer for my car. Carmax popped up at the end as wanting to buy my car for certain amount which was somewhat low but not terrible. My car needed a fuel pump so I had it towed which they said was fine. Got there and they offered me $2,200 LESS THAN THEIR ONLINE OFFER. I would have rather known that BEFORE I had it towed there. I had heard they were bad. Now I believe it. Would never buy a car from them now. Too many reputable places to need to bother with them. I loved my buying experience experience with Gus as my salesman. He found me exactly what I asked for. He was awesome. As far as sales goes, that gets a high mark from me. It's no haggle, and easy. BUT HUGE ADVISE HERE!!!!! In those 7 days that you have to change your mind, no questions asked, GET THE CAR INSPECTED BY SOMEONE YOU TRUST ALL OVER!!!!! They sold me a car that needed 4 tires, but I found out about it several months later. I was told by 2 other sources that the tires that I had on the car were ok around town but NOT to take a trip with them since the tread was low, and in the rain my car could be unsafe on a freeway where water tends to puddle. When I spoke with carmax manager and service manager, they said my car was safe to take on the trips I have planned. I hate being lied to, and putting my family in jeopardy. I would rather them say its after the 30 day warranty than to act like they were doing me a favor by lying to me. I may or may not buy a car from them again, but I WILL HAVE A HEAD TO TOE CHECK WITHIN FIRST 7 DAYS IF I choose to buy here again. I purchased a 2014 Chevy Malibu in July 13th. The staff was very helpful in getting me financed. When I purchased the car I noticed there was a large chip out of the windshield. I brought it to the salesman's attention. He told me to bring the car back on Monday and have someone look at it. Over the next few days I had stopped to clean the car and as I was wiping off the windshield I noticed more and more chips. The windshield looked as though someone had dumped a load of rocks on to it. I'm not a mechanic or glass expert but I'm naturally concerned about the windshield being weaken by a previous blow that it may not take much to shatter it. They offered a "patch job" on the larger chips but refuses to replace the windshield. He called it peppering....In hindsight I wish I would have examined it a little more or I would not have purchased the car in that condition. I feel like this is a safety issue but Carmax is more concerned of it being a cost issue. If you purchase a car from Carmax make sure you examine every inch of the car. This has now become my first choice and go-to place to buy a car. We are Mercedes Benz owners however the local dealership here can't even come close to matching the level of service offered here. I can't say that I've ever found working with a car lot pleasurable but Pam spent so much time with us, and her genuine interest in helping us made our buying experience incredible. We exchanged hugs on several occasions (and still do when we see her in the dealership when we have to go back for something. Our car has experienced some challenges, and Zack in the service department is absolutely incredible. I've had several appraisals on my 2017 Mustang over the past 2 weeks: $30k at local Ford dealer, $28k at another dealer, $28k at yet another dealer, and $27,927 through Carvana. Carmax offered me $25k. This is KBB trade value, fair condition. The car is in great condition, not their lowest rating of fair. Unbelievable.
