Today (Monday), we finalized a deal on our 5th vehicle we've purchased from CarMax. We've had multiple good experiences with them, that's why we come back. This time, the hunt started on Saturday. Before we even walked into the dealership, we went ahead and prequalified with external financing. We made an appointment to test drive a vehicle at 3 pm. I highly encourage appointments. We arrived and we were assigned a sales agent, Sydney Fox. The member of our party who would be driving the vehicle ran about 15 minutes late. Sydney went ahead and washed the vehicle and got it ready for the test drive. We told her we were interested in other vehicles. She got our next option ready and we went for our drive. We came back and saw the next vehicle. The interior was a bit of a wreck, so we passed on the test drive. We went back to the drawing board. Found another vehicle, and another test drive. We broadened our search and found another vehicle, yet another test drive. Then, we stumbled upon the vehicle we decided on. Test drive was awesome. We came back and told Sydney we wanted it. She had to leave at 6 pm, so she set us up with Evan to finish the process. I logged into my insurance app, got a quote, and then the next page showed a drastically different payment layout. We told Evan we needed to pump the brakes on the sale until we could get our insurance figured out. They put the vehicle on hold for us until Monday 6 pm. On Monday morning, I got a text from Sydney inquiring about our interest in the vehicle. I told her we got a hold of our insurance, it's good, and we want the vehicle. We would be in at 6 pm to finalize the deal. We filled out the CarMax prefinancing, but there rate wasn't as good as our external source. She later messaged me and said we could work the process from home and it would be express delivery when we showed up at 6. I was a little hesitant, but with some encouragement, I said I would try. I had a hiccup in my external loan application. I had to call the business to have them set up automated payments, and we just went ahead and finished the loan processing. I logged back into my app, signed the loan, and then asked my husband to do the same. I then added the vehicle to my insurance policy and sent them a photo copy. I did all of this from the comfort of my home. We showed up at 6, checked in, waited maybe 20 minutes, signed some paperwork, and we were lead out to the vehicle around 6:45. I have been looking for a truck for a couple months. I went by here on my way home after another dealer tried to cheat me on my trade in. Walked in Oscar greeted me at front, took me back to desk, explaining how CarMax works. Did an excellent job breaking down process. I explained what I was looking for. He pulled up some options. Oscar had an appraiser go evaluate my truck while we evaluated the 2 I liked. Appraisal was more than one , but lower than other dealers. KEY is they don't require you to sell it to them. Truck I liked would cost me $199 to have it delivered from UT for a test drive. I paid, 10 days later after inspected/prepped, I drove it. During the 10 days Oscar & system kept me updated of shipping status. Zero haggling or problems during the appraisal, search, shipping, test drive & final sale. Final paperwork takes a while, so be prepared to wait. Business office staff broke down the paperwork, easy explanation of cost. Thereby making you feel you are not being taken. I called two days later to confirm with Brittany (in business office) if everything was a go, because I will be going to TX soon. I am worried about my temporary plates expiring. She explained everything is great, but would personally watch out for them. THAT IS GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE, because I feel I no longer need to worry about this. Brittany is on top of it. There are many different sales persons in the building, young, older, male, female, of color, Spanish speaking, so absolutely no reason you can't find someone to feel comfortable with in your vehicle search. Service department is highly inefficient and did not seem to prioritize my car or even consider the fact that I had an engine issue come up within 2 weeks of buying my car and is still under their warranty. They were able to squeeze me in today because someone didn't show up but otherwise I would've had to wait 17 days to have my car serviced... also the service department NEVER answers their phone. I have not been given an update on the status of my car even though they promised that they would provide me with a loaner if needed. The department closes in 20 minutes, I should've heard back about 2-3 hours ago about what was generally going on, and they will not answer the phone. Does not honor tax exemptions in New Mexico. Had an appointment. Did not matter. Did not work with us on apr. sales manager was rude. Will not be back to this carmax. I've had better experiences at ones in phoenix. Travelled two hours with a hotel stay. If I could rate lower than one star I would. Only bought the car because it was the one we were looking for. I generally had a good experience purchasing my Lexus several years ago. I am now looking for another Lexus TX500h. One came into Albuquerque recently and was quickly snagged. The car is in demand and frankly I am not interested in stalking the CarMax app. My point is It is time to modernize the car purchasing process. Example: set up a buyer profile with my desired vehicle(s) that will proactively notify me of the car available in my area or in neighboring cities or states. Every problem listed is on the claimed 125-point inspection. Here is a list: 1. Seven unsafe cars 2. Car #1-bad suspension 3. Car #2-bad suspension. I got a call from an elderly man who bought the car a week later and found my number on the paperwork left in the car. He took it to his mechanic and the suspension had to be replaced. Carmax was aware of the problems and they sold it again anyway. 4. Car #3- Bad brakes, bad suspension, electrical malfunctions, bad turbo assembly, bad wipers, no fluid, dirty cabin filter, dirty air filter, coolant not serviced. It was taken to Carmax and they pad-slapped the brakes and used substandard turbo parts. I contacted them immediately but I was ignored. The car has sat in the driveway for over a month and taken to a different mechanic today. 5. Car #4- owned 3 months. Taken in for grease leaking from both front wheels. Carmax only replaced the boots, knowing that the joints were compromised. They even wrote on the invoice that the axles needed to be replaced, but they put me behind the wheel anyway. I took it to a mechanic. The brakes, struts, shocks, and cv joints were all bad. 6. Car #5-the loaner they put me in had a low tire. I asked them to check it and they sent me on my way. I had a blowout the next day. 7. Car #6-the second loaner they put me in had a low tire. They checked it and sent me on my way. I had to put air in the tire every single time I drove it. It lost 36lbs of air between uses. Car #4: I was in the process of returning it due to so many issues. Another driver ran a red light and totaled the car. Although I had GAP insurance, the car is worth $6000 less than what I paid for it 3 months ago, leaving me with paying for a car that was never safe to drive in the first place, which had bad struts, bad brakes, bad shocks, and bad cv joints. Carmax claims that the problem was resolved. The car being totaled does not erase the fact that they failed to inspect the car, failed to repair the car, and knowingly let me drive away in a comprised vehicle. Additionally, Carmax disclosed one recall on this car. Following the incomplete repairs, the invoice stated that there were two recalls, They claim that the issue is resolved. On the contrary. Both cars have sat in the driveway or have been in for repairs longer than they have been driven. My experiences have proven that Carmax does not inspect vehicles, putting drivers in unsafe situations. If it happens to one person 7 times, it happens to others. These cars were financed through Carmax. After replacing the first car, Carmax raised my interest rate for the second car. I have not been compensated for the costs of a ride service I was forced to use due to interoperability of newly purchased cars. It has been a nightmare. Finances aside, the concern lies within the safety of customers who purchase from this business. read more

Made an appt for 5:30 today to see a car. Upon checking in I was told I was first on the waitlist. Waited til 6 and still hadn't been helped. There wasn't even anyone at the desk majority of the time. Employees kind of just standing around. I ended up leaving. Just picked up a 2019 Genesis G70 Advanced from CarMax yesterday. The place was cool, not the used car sales vibe. I had already picked out a vehicle and done all the preliminary stuff online. Was actually looking at getting into an entirely different vehicle. The salesman was great. Got me through the whole process, and luckily, right before I signed papers and paid my down payment he asked "and you're alright with it being a standard right?" I was not. Lol the listing said automatic. That could have been a problem, but it wasn't. The sales guy saved the day for sure. He was cool throughout the entire process getting me all set, and then at the very end when we had to cancel all the work he put in for me to get the initial car..he was still super cool and patient with me. Went through the inventory and ended up finding something even better than I absolutely love in my price range. I bought a car last year and they didn't register my vehicle for 6months. There were circumstances on our end. I was in the hospital, myself the parent. Carmax's excuse was they emailed my 19 year old son once. Since, they had it him as the main borrower. They said we needed to register the vehicle on our own if we didn't respond to the email. Doesn't make sense since we paid them to do this. Other excuse, we didn't provide insurance. I know, I provided this information. Because state farm emailed me the information, the day of the purchase. I am very disappointed about Carmax's, business practices. They don't call customers to follow up or make more attempts to contact customers. The business department is a joke as well. I have bought cars from Carmax several times and have had no problems. However, THIS Carmax was terrible. My car was stolen a few weeks ago; I quickly found a car I wanted on Carmax and waited to get my insurance check and immediately ordered it to be delivered to my condo. On the day it was to be delivered, they called at the last minute and said they had "just realized" the passenger doors were a different color from the rest of the car. That was a Tuesday. On Friday, a woman called and said it also needed a new part for the heater. She said she would keep me apprised of their progress. No call on Monday. No call on Tuesday. On Tuesday I called and they said it would be another week before it was ready. Late Tuesday I left a message that if I didn't have my car by Wednesday (the next day), to forget the sale. Do not go here!!! The experience has been the worst I have ever had since the beginning of this process. When we entered the facility, we had to wait for hours, and while waiting, we noticed several, and I mean several employees just sitting at their desks on their phones, with no clients whatsoever. Then, when we wanted to test drive three vehicles, we were told that we could only test drive two cars in one day. So we chose two vehicles. Well, the first vehicle, we didn't even make it out of the parking lot because the steering column was so crooked that it was unsafe to drive. The sales rep already knew this but didn't bother to inform us. So now we were down to 1 test drive left. We ended up getting the second vehicle; the paperwork wasn't done right, so we had to redo it. Then, I got a call from the bank and had to redo the paperwork again a week later. Here we are 30 days later, and the temp tags are expiring. I tried calling them for two days straight, and I am not joking when I say the phone rang for 20 minutes or more at a time! The main carmax line couldn't get in touch with them; I couldn't get in touch with them, and it is IMPOSSIBLE to get someone on the phone! I live two hours away, and driving in is not an option. Well, I came to find out that they never even submitted the registration paperwork because they needed proof of residency. Well, they had 30 days to inform me of that; it was when I had my daughter physically go in to get another temp tag or find out where the tags were. Lastly, the sales rep sat there and lied about this being relayed to someone yesterday. However, no one ever called, emailed, or even sent a letter! The individuals who work here do not care about you as a customer; they are not competent and only care about getting the sale. I will never advise anyone to go here or ever purchase a vehicle from CarMax or any CarMax. STAY FAR AWAY from this store. If I could give zero stars, I would!!!! Worst experience ever at CarMax today. I received my offer online to sell my 2020 Toyota Tacoma SR for $24,400. I scheduled an appointment for 5:30pm to sell my vehicle. I showed up, and checked in. I let the lady know at the front desk that I had my 10 day loan payoff and insurance with me. She said in a rude tone "I don't need your insurance." I said okay what do you need? Then she asked for my payoff and key. I provided both and then she told me it would be a 30-40 minute wait. After an hour and a half of waiting and seeing multiple people who came in after me receive their offers, I decided to ask for an estimate of how much longer until my appraisal was complete. When I inquired at the desk how much longer it would be, they said that my appraisal failed to go through the system so my key was just sitting there in an awaiting basket. No one had even looked at my vehicle yet. They then ran my appraisal manually again and quoted me another 30-45 min. I asked politely if they could expedite the process since I had already been waiting an hour and a half. One of the managers- Valerie Pacheco-Gallegos was very apologetic and kind. About 25 minutes later they came out with my offer: $21,400. $3000 less than my offer that was given online. I asked why is this offer 3,000 less than my online offer? They looked at the notes and said the truck is missing the back seat. I then told them the SR does not have back seats. They looked puzzled and said let me ask the buyer. They went back to speak with them on the phone, and came back and said that is the offer because that is what we would make at auction... Unbelievable. I told Ms. Pacheco-Gallegos that she was very kind but I would never ever do business with CarMax again, even though I had great experiences with them in the past. This place really dropped the ball. I've never bought from CarMax but I've sold them 4 cars. How weird is it to say I've sold a dealership 4 cars? Haha! It's true! They will buy your car - in any condition! They have an appraisal department that will evaluate your vehicle (30 min - 1.5 hours depending on how many people are in front of you) and will write you a check on the spot if you accept the offer. You can always take the appraisal with you and bring it back within 7 days to sell the vehicle if you are still looking around. It's an easy process. Upon occasion we have gotten an associate that is a little pushy to sell us another vehicle but we usually don't sell a vehicle until we have purchased one already. Today we sold to Amy Smith. She was AMAZING! Thorough, fast, and NOT PUSHY at all! She made me want to buy a car from her just because she was so easy to work with! Haha! Maybe reverse psychology? No I would not recommend CarMax. In June we had a trunk sent to NM from Colorado for $200. When the truck arrived we test drove it and the steering wheel was shaking at high speeds and the tires needed an alignment. CarMax wanted us to buy the truck how it is, and make an appointment to have issues fixed. We said no we will not buy until everything is fixed. Whoever inspected the vehicle in Colorado missed the issues, and whoever inspected the vehicle in NM also missed these issues... So about 2 weeks goes by and finally everything is fixed and ready to go, the manager offered to refund us the $200 transfer fee for the inconvenience of everything. We bought the truck July 21st and still have not received the refund. All they have told us is "it's being processed". I have bought from CarMax in the past, but I will definitely not buy from them again. read more

I have been looking at buying a car for some time now. Traditional sales. But I always had my eye on CarMax. I downloaded there app, and could search nationally, or by our local CarMax. I found a couple of cars I like, knew all of the details and specs. And, I ended up buying from CarMax. CarMax salesman, Steve, was good at his job and helped us find the two or three cars I had an interest in. I really had eye on a Taurus SHO and he hooked us up with a test drive. Soon he had us out the door. The experience was great. The worst part was waiting for our insurance company to add this new car, ugh. Steve was a little rushed at times. I think he was trying his best to juggle customers. I recommend either just browsing the lot for fun, or download the CarMax app, and know what looks good to you before you even go in. Very Disappointed. This was my first time buying a car online. I purchesed a six month old car. After 3 weeks the car had issues. I took it back for service and was told that there was nothing they could do because it was "within their sales standards". They could have easily fixed the issue for $400 (because that's what it cost me to have it fixed) , but instead they chose not to fix it and lost a lot more because I was going to buy my grandaughter a car from them for graduation in June. If you want to sell your vehicle with them you can only do it during bank/credit union business hours, according to Assistant Manager Valarie Pacheco-Gallegos at the Albuquerque Carmax. I received my appraisal offer on a Friday, went on Saturday to get a cashiers check for the payoff amount of what I owed to cover my loan balance after their offer and Valarie said that because they couldn't contact the CU the lien was with to confirm payoff since the credit union was closed I couldn't sell my car to them. She said people can't trade or sell cars to them unless they can contact the lien holders. This is absolutely bogus logic since people buy and sell vehicles all day everyday after business hours. I asked her how all the others in the building were doing it and she didn't know. NEVER DO BUSINESS WITH CARMAX! read more

We went to sell or jeep gladiator. 4 wheel drive. These people are ridiculous. We have a 2022 fully loaded. We even have extras we put on the jeep about 10k we put into the jeep. We realize we were not going to get our money back on that. Maybe some??? 2 years old 16k miles. Looking brand new, it is Willys , because it is brand new. They offered us nothing for the vehicle. They wanted to sell us a five year old truck with 26k miles, clean but no extras only a Tonto cover and they wanted us to pay 10k more than they offered for our vehicle. What a waste of our time!!! I have purchased at least 3 cars from CarMax - mostly fine. I did try the Service 2x at the Albuquerque location and wasted my time - horrible experience. My appointment was scheduled 2 weeks out and the services scheduled were 1) oil change; 2) balance and rotate tires; and 3) tire alignment. Although I made my schedule - driving 2 hours for the appointment, my service was 4 hours and no alignment reportedly could be completed. Clearly, the service team was unable to do the alignment and instead of being straight up about it right away - they let me sit there in the lobby for 4 hours. I took the car to another mechanic 3 days later and he confirmed the the balance and rotation of the tires was not done nor the alignment of course. For the oil change - the recorded date of the oil change was 3/4 which was not my service date at all. I did not even have confidence the oil was changed. Incredible. Please do yourself a favor and find another location to have your car serviced. read more
