Everything will look the same and there's a lot twists and turns. It has happened to me and I'm pretty well versed in hiking and trails. My swissy loves it here. He's not really a runner, so trails and lots of stuff to sniff and check out are his thing. It's pretty busy in the on season and relatively desolate in the off season, but it's nice either way. If you don't mind bundling up, doing some off season walking and hiking might be for you. It's very beautiful and extremely quiet, almost too quiet. I have always felt safe here. As a lady, it can be off putting to be in a large place alone but I always see rangers here and there even if other people aren't around. Many people bring their dogs to run and hike- most are good but as with any public place there are always some bad eggs. I would deff check this one out if you haven't. I often find that we stop and just watch nature. It's a really great way to get out and do something that feels different each time you go. There are a high number of trailers that have not moved in a long time. The park trails need maintenance as there are overgrown trees, and laid over trees across paths. Some of the trail access have planks of wood for soft ground that is rotting away. Trails are not marked and website map is difficult to read. Some of the docks on the water are inaccessible from shore.

Moving out from the headquarters, we took the walk on the eastern side of the river. Only one good place there to see the water, but it was magnificent, as a cormorant posed for us on the tree and a great blue heron took flight right over our heads. This is now the only place on the island to buy Nation Parks passes. A marvelous resource.

It has pieces of the World Trade Center Memorialized with stories of heroic animals who saved lives during 911. The many trained rescue dogs worked tirelessly to find people trapped under the World Trade Center. This monument celebrates their efforts and the trainers who worked with them. This is such a beautiful well maintained park. My husband and came here for a barbecue. I'm so glad I decided to come. The park is very relaxing and manicured. The gazebo has lights so you can sit in it when it gets dark. It has functioning electrical outlets as well. I will definitely come to another event given here. Signs posted state you need to have park permit as well. If you're ever in the area this is the park to check out.

This park is supposedly renowned for its biking trails. That may be, but we were there for camping…read more It's a small county park that charges admission unless you have a green key. There's a large, open area with at least 3 restroom facilities that I could see and a shower. This open area is ringed by woods and inside the woods, kind of well-concealed, there are several numbered drive-in camping areas, suitable for about 30 people. The private camping areas are nice and flat, and there is open access to the woods behind. There is also a playground and several open fields to play kickball or other sports and a picnic pavilion with bbq setups. Cons: loads and loads of ticks. I mean, you need to prepare for ticks if you're going camping in the woods but the amount of ticks we encountered here was crazy. And they allow dogs! They really need to spray here, one kid in our group had 15 ticks on him and his sister had 13. Good news is there were no mosquitoes and very few ants and spiders. There are no outlets for electricity at the campsite nor individual water pumps/spigots, as there are at many other camping areas. Bring your remote charging blocks and be prepared to haul buckets from the bathrooms to your campsite. Also the bathrooms needed attention when we got there, however by day two they had cleaned them up. And even though it seems remote there, we heard neighbors (not inside the park) setting off firecrackers as well as a local fire department siren. Overall would probably return as it's a nice spot to let the kids play or hike. But they've got to do something about the ticks!!

I'm feeling hit hard in the nostalgia so we are making it a point to take a walk down every memory lane, and in this case, a literal walk. We discovered this little .7 mile loop long before we moved away when our first daughter was just a baby. I had thought about this place often because it is this humble little hike that first introduced me to the idea that hiking was even a thing I liked. Now, I've climbed mountains all over North Carolina and every amazing sight I've ever seen traces back to a glimmer of interest born right here. Pretty cool. If you want a quintessential immersion into the Long Island pine barrens experience, this is your place. A little slice of seclusion amidst the suburbs, the ground blanketed with soft copper colored pine needles, the view around you an oasis of symmetrical and stately white pine trees- ah, this is it. Long Island at its best.

The park signage is visible once you reach the right street- Old Church Av. Out tour guide was very knowledgeable. She knows details of the estate and the family. The free tour is being offered from Friday to Sunday only, every half hour schedule from 10 - 4 PM. The house size from outside was very deceiving, it looks small, when we went for a tour, we cant believe how many rooms were built inside. The house is on its original form, minor renovation was made. The grounds are maintained. We visited the family cemetery at the northwest end corner of the property. It was amazing to see the family of different generation's tombstomes. It was a privilege be on the estate of one of the Declaration of Independence signors.
