I was a bit underwhelmed with my first German dining experience. Having some time between trains, I found my way here. This place is huge with seats everywhere. Service was a touch slow, but nothing to complain about. The food was where I was not impressed. I ordered a schnitzel with a side of fries. The schnitzel had not enough seasoning to it which rendered it good at best. The fries had zero flavor and the texture was off. The beer I had was good though. Came here on my last day in Stuttgart to meet up with extended family. We were a party of 7 and were seated right away (we RSVP, it seems like it could get pretty bust here). The server was really nice and spoke English perfectly and made us feel really welcomed. The food here was really delicious and I believe traditional, which I really miss since coming back home. ANYWAYS. What we got: - Maultaschen (Carls Tipp): Three types of Swabian ravioli with onions, potato salad and black beer gravy. This was really delicious and hearty. The potato salad balanced out the richness of the ravioli and the gravy. Even the next day it was still delicious. - Schwabenteller: Pork tenderloin and a small breaded veal chop with black beer gravy served with Swabian ravioli and cheese noodles. My mom ordered this and it was delicious as well! Love that it was a little bit of everything! We sat indoors, but there are plenty of outdoor seating available if you want to people watch and just take in the city. Overall, this spot was really good, and one of our family members mentioned that whenever his job has clientele in town, this was a spot that they take them to because of the variety and deliciousness of the food and beer. read more

My Stuttgart dwelling host said that since I was in Swabian land l must try Swabian food! So I asked my local friend to recommend a good Swabian eatery. At first she said all good Schwabian cooking can only be found outside the city, in the villages. Then she settled for Carls Brauhaus am Schlossplatz - yes right in the central plaza! Since we are both vegetarian, there were only two things we could order from their tome of a menu: Käsespätzle und Maultaschen. Which, according to my friend, reminded her of her childhood visits to her very Swabian grandparents. I thoroughly enjoyed that meal though, as they really knew how to make good alcohol free drinks, and the server was super pleasant and accommodating. I was also exposed to a classic German dessert: Heiße Liebe (hot love) - hot raspberry sauce over cold vanilla ice-cream. It was quite impressive! There are outdoor and indoor seating, but since it was a brutally hot day in Stuttgart, we opted for indoor seating, which was massive. Despite the large space and hordes of people, their service was always prompt and attentive. I had expected a large bill - to pay for its prime location and tourist attraction. Our service was just ok, but our dishes were prepared very well. I hade the roast Pork in a dark beer gravy and potato dumpling. Light cabbage coleslaw was served with my meal. Crispy shank as my husband would describe it was good, but really difficult for him to cut into. Sometimes he had to use his hand to steady the meat. We stopped in here for lunch while wandering around the city. It was a great stop from the cold and in the main area next to Schlossplatz. The inside is large and modern-rustic, with regular and large tables to meet new friends & a bar. We were greeted when we entered and seated quickly, the staff was friendly and was able to provide English menus to aid our choices. The prices are fair and especially for the location we were pleasantly surprised. The drink selection was large with a wide variety of beers and wine. We enjoyed their own Dinklacker pils & Sandwald hefe weizen, both went down easy. Since we were there for lunch we didn't order as many of the classics but enjoyed a lighter meal. We started out with the vesper-platte which had a mixture of meats & cheeses. It was a great way to try some meats you might not order individually and everything was tasty. Then we had the tomato soup (tomatencremesuppe), the local ravioli soup (maultaschensuppe) and some spätzle and of course a pretzel. All the dishes were good. The tomato soup was rich & almost buttery from the cheese on top. The ravioli soup had a solid both that we compared to wonton soup (though not the same but a way to describe it) & the spatzle was heavenly. Overall this was a great stop and a great value. This place is located right in the city center where all the shoppping stores are and its near the old castle and new palace. I came here with a group of friends after our study abroad advisor suggested this place to us. They have German food and Swabian food. They also have good beer options to choose from. You can eat inside or outside. Everyone either got the käsespätzle (which tastes like mac n cheese) or schnitzel (which is breaded and fried meat) which is practically what every foreigner orders when they are in Germany to be on the safe side lol. So, I ordered the käsespätzle but it tasted alright. I've had better at a different restaurant in Germany. But I tried the schnitzel and it was good. I regretted not getting that instead. I still think about how good the schnitzel was to this day lol. We received slow service but then again they were pretty busy. read more

NOT WORTH THE TRIP NOW!!!!! We stopped in as soon as the ban was lifted allowing restaurants to open with in door dinning. We each had the schweinshaxe. The meat was over cooked and not as good as I had there before. My wife had the schnitzel and that was dry too. Maybe the cooks were a little off because they were out of work but this is common traditional German food. How did they mess this up? I had the same order here way before the COVID hit and the food was good. Maybe I will wait a while until they get some cooks that can turn the place around I wont be going there anytime soon. read more

Probably 3.5 stars, but I'm rounding up because the beer and location are excellent. It's a tourist-ish place right on the Schlossplatz, but the prices aren't unreasonable, the food is decent, the beer is great, and the vibe is nice. Carl's is in a great location in the heart of downtown, facing into the Schlossplatz and down the Königstraße, and on a nice day the outdoor seating would be fantastic. The interior is bigger than I'd expected, and love the wooden decor, it manages to keep the atmosphere brighter even though the lighting itself is a touch dim. Unlike most gasthäuser that I've been to, Carl's actually has a host/hostess stand, and they do take reservations as well. We were in fairly early (by German standards) on a Friday night and didn't have trouble getting a table for four, but if we'd come in an hour later or if the weather had been nicer we would have had some trouble. Service was standard German service; businesslike but not unfriendly, and our food all came out quickly. We were initially short one salad, but within a minute or two of pointing that out to our server she brought it out, so no harm no foul. If you're not familiar with service in Germany, expect to not see your server all that often, and be prepared to wait for your check. Trying to get in and out for a quick meal anywhere is unlikely to work, but that is balanced by there being absolutely no pressure to eat and go, you can stay as long as you want after you finish. The food was fine, if nothing incredible. My Ofenfrischer Schweinekrustenbraten (oven-roasted pork) was tender, and while it could have been a touch more juicy, the Schwarzbiersoße (Schwarze beer sauce) was tasty and certainly made up for it. I love that they left some of the crispy skin cracklin on the outside of the pork slices as well, that is some good stuff! The potato dumpling was unexceptional but fine, and the side of vinegary coleslaw was perfect to cut the richness of the pork and potato. Overall a good choice from the Classics portion of the menu (speaking of which, they do have English menus, just ask for one). Beers were nicely varied; they had about a half-dozen on tap, plus a lot more in bottles. On a chilly winter night the house Schwarzbier goes down smooth, and the Hefewiesen was a nice full-bodied hefe. Prices were decent; two small beers and an entree for less than €20, but I'm sure you can find cheaper meals. You're paying a premium for the location and the decor, but it's not unreasonable. Overall a good meal at a decent price, and the location is great. Carl's is a solid choice if you're in the area. read more

Food was good in the beginning and the quality went down drastically this was my go to place for German food unfortunately there is much better out there to top it off I was about to enjoy a cigar with my fiancé and we We're told we could not have a cigar this was all the while we were sitting between a sea of cigarette smokers. This was the first place I stopped at in Stuttgart per recommendaiton of the hotel front desk. Ok, inside is huge and welcoming but the outside seating is great. It's right next to the Schlossplatz and makes for prime people watching and socializing. The menu here is extensive and some options looked pretty fancy. Pricing was a bit on the higher end but the service didnt match it. My experience here was with less than stellar service and bit of a long wait for my beer. Food came out first. For a Brauhaus in such a touristy area, it was pretty good. Carls is a restaurant for the Dinkelacker brewery in Stuttgart, so they have an excellent beer selection and prices are great, about 3.80 for a half liter. I tried the Alpen maultaschen and enjoyed them immensely. The are a Swabian specialty of pasta filled with meat, veggies and cheese like an over-sized ravioli. We also tried the pork schnitzel, but it was a little dry and needed some sort of sauce. Service was good, but we thought our food came out a little too fast, like it was in a warming oven and just plated to order, so that may have been why the schnitzel was so dry. With the cold weather, convenience and comfort took over from finding a little Mom and Pop shop, but I really enjoyed my meal. I also have a few tips for American travelers in Germany that would have been good to know beforehand: 1) Tip 10% for good service, but you won't be able to do it if you charge it on a card, there is no tip line on the receipt, so have a few Euros set aside for it. 2) No hostess, just go in and sit down. 3) You'll have to ask for the bill, but you can sit there as long as you want as long as you keep ordering food or beers. 4) Don't expect to be doted over by the staff like in the US. They will only ask if you want another beer when they see an empty glass, but don't be afraid to flag them down if you want something. read more

I go to Stuttgart several times a year for work. Carls is a great place to go for a beer--either inside at the bar, or outside at one of the tables on the main square. The food is very good and the service is very friendly, attentive. This is my go-to place for German food and beer when I'm there...I make a point to visit every time I'm in town. Carla Tipp !! a flavorful delight of three maultaschen (Swabian Ravioli) with a topping of sautéed sweet onions, a thin sauce that's slightly tart to offset the very sweet onions. The three are all prepared the same way but have different fillings. A side of small salad and something that reminded me of a german potato salad accompanied the meal. Pick a wine or Swabian beer and it compliments the meal perfectly. We sat outside and enjoyed the sunny day, the Schlossplatz and views. Our waiter was attentive and provided both english and german menus and took the time to explain some of the meals and their sides. For a Saturday and many people, service was not hindered (keep in mind you will experience European service where they allow you to sit, talk, enjoy outside so you may have to flag them down). Plate removal was awesome for our small table so I didn't have to worry about mistakenly knocking it off or landing an elbow in it. Will definitely be returning to try a beer and dessert. *If you're not a smoker sit at either far end to avoid being trapped by a smoke cloud!! read more

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Carl's Brauhaus! Our server was great. As we were looking at the German menu and could only read a few words, she said, English menu? Yay! And she spoke English -- as in most places we have visited here on Stuttgart. The food was delicious! We had the ravioli soup and cheese plate as starters and Schwabenpfannle (pork tenderloin & veal chop with Swabian ravioli and cheese spatzle in a iron skillet) and the Brauhaus steak. I wanted a beer and our server recommended Dinkelacker Kellerbrier. Liked it enough to have 2. It is a bar, but we liked the casualness of it and all was good. We got there late- about 10pm and left as they were closing at 1130pm. Easy to find, next to the left Palace fountain. I find it funny that my husband's .33 liter Pepsi light is only .50€ less than my half liter beer. Love Germany! read more
