Zum Becher restaurant was quite the gem! I stayed at a hotel nearby about 10 mins by walk, and came by for dinner. It's on a quiet residential street. It is definitely not a tourist site judging by how many locals were around us! It looked like this was their regular restaurant spot! The atmosphere was so welcoming. Several large tables had 8+ people groups who seemed like they were having a blast and were there when I arrived and looked nowhere close to being done when I left! The menus are all in German but luckily a staff member caught on to my incompetent German and gave me an English menu that was tucked away. There are about 8 main dishes plus several vegetarian options, and soups/sides/dessert. It may seem like it's not an extensive menu but rather, they focus on making homemade components to their dishes and they make them really well! I ate the fried Maultaschen with egg, it came with a lovely salad with some hidden tastiness! My husband ate the lentils with spätzle and two sausages. I came back two days later after my first visit and ordered a the "Terine Gainsburger marsch", which was a soup/stew with tender beef pieces, potatoes, carrots and spätzle in a flavourful beef broth. I loved it! I finished my meal off with a bread pudding which had a lovely mix of textures and flavourful cream sauce on top! Service was very friendly. Visited this place with my family to get some traditional German food. Seating is outside and it's a very urban environment, so if you're used to restaurants in a big city and can handle the humidity, then you'll appreciate this. Parked on the street and since I didn't have change, the server was good enough to let me borrow a parking permit so I didn't need to feed the meter. Server was great and willing to explain the various dishes. Ordered the tripe stew, German raviolis and schnitzel. While my kids didn't enjoy it as much, I thought it was great. Really liked their potato salad. While food and service was definitely a solid four, the ambiance/weather (especially when it's hot) and credit card is why I held out to 3.5. If the food is the same the next time, I'll bump up to a to a 4. read more

It was an excellent, homely and intimate restaurant. My close friend invited me while I was in town. No one spoke English so she translated for me. This is what we had, along with red wine and apple soda. I had the sauerbraten and she had the kasesplatzle. read more

Stayed at a nearby hotel and asked the concierge for recommendations that were off the beaten path, not touristy, and where I probably wouldn't see any other Americans. His first recommendation was Zum Becher and it was excellent! Very nice place, a couple of blocks up the hill in a residential area. I think I was the only English-speaking person in the restaurant. The owner/manager seemed a little annoyed with me when I asked for a table for one in English, and she told a waitress to take care of me who spoke some English. They did have an English menu. Good beer. Great food. Reasonable prices. I had the veal steak in horseradish sauce with potatoes and some sort of berry jelly (sort of like cranberry sauce), and it was top notch. I ate dinner pretty early around 6 p.m. on a Thursday, but by the time I left about 7:30 it was starting to get full, and they let me know they needed my table for a reservation at 8. I wasn't rushed by any means. You might want to make reservations though. Zum Becher was excellent and I would love to go back! read more

We loved the food. Home style cooking. Very tasty. Tried the beef soup and 2 beef dishes. No complaints whatsoever about the food. The service was bare bones - absent and oblivious. We also had to be "rude" in order to get another round of beers during the meal. We were then waiting to order desert and after dinner drinks for 15 minutes. We asked a waitress and she said "ok" but never returned. Then our waiter brings the bill not 5 minutes later. We alerted the hotel concierge who highly recommended this place. We sadly cannot recommend and suggest you try other highly rated local-flavor places. read more

My wife and I had a lovely meeting in their patio area. The food was very good. I had a schnitzel with salad and my wife had a vegetarian meal! We local beer and wine, both described by the waiter in detail about the subtleties of each. We met a local couple and discussed what to do in town and exchanged a few pleasantries of our respective countries. Service was excellent, food was very reasonably priced and the weather abided. What more can you ask for when you stumble on a quant place on a quiet residential street? read more
