Well I can definitely tell you it is as colorful and retro as the pictures reflect. There are a few restaurants/vendors inside and out for you to wine & dine. More of a tapas style. I went in for a late breakfast and had an espresso, milk shake and sugar free cake that we're all delicious. They allow you take pictures with the decor, if you're lodging there is a hotel in the back and the rooms are on the second floor away from the public. I definitely recommend stopping by for the atmosphere. Fun cute spot in the center of Ponce.

Rooms are worn, and they smell as there are no windows and no ventilation. On a Monday night, they held a Karaoke night, blasting music on the first floor (this is a 2 story building, opened in the center) until midnight without any mercy for the guests trying to sleep. When we called the front desk, they just told us that the music would be on only until midnight (what? On a Monday night?). I was staying there but not necessarily on vacation (family illness emergency stay), so not everyone comes here to party. You might think, buy why stay there? Originally, we booked the Melia hotel (a bit more quiet given the situation), but the room was so run down that we asked to be moved (both hotels are from the same chain). Not recommended, this hotel needs a major overhaul.

Although he'd reserved a studio, when we arrived, we found we had been upgraded to a one-bedroom unit, as the studio's door was being repaired. Late check in was very easy. The property's deck is large and has a gorgeous view of the beach directly below. You really cannot beat the location of Villa Tropical on Shacks. We enjoyed drinking our coffee on the deck whilst watching the sun rise in the mornings before grabbing our gear and walking down the short flight of steps to the sand. The gift shop within the office is a major time saver, too, when you need a drink or snack but don't want to drive. The Econo supermarket is only about an 8-minute drive away, though, when you do want to do a grocery run. It was awesome having a fully stocked kitchen and being able to cook and eat in most meals. We loved grilling on the deck at sunset! The Ola Lola restaurant is a cute spot a short walk away for food or drinks when one would rather skip cooking, too, and in each room, there is a very thorough guide compiled by the management with information on where to find all kinds of things in the area, from film development to entertainment. It was extremely convenient to be able to do laundry on the premises also. The staff are super helpful and maintain VT very well. Our unit (1B) was clean and comfortable, and by the end of our stay, we had fallen into a nice, homey routine. I was sad to leave and understand why Shacks is a place so many return to every year. The beach is clean, the big waves break far from the shore, there are interesting reefs for snorkeling, many days have adequate wind for kitesurfing, and there is a friendly surfer community among those who stay in the area both longer term and seasonally.

This is a beautiful resort. We were given a handicap room on the main floor (2nd) in the ocean…read moretower. It wasn't what we reserved, but the same rate. When booking, we were thinking the price wasn't too bad, forgetting it wasn't an all inclusive resort. There are three restaurants in the main side of the resort. We only ate at the buffet for breakfast. It was good, but not worth $27 per person. The pool bar had a small menu, that was pretty good. The pool was very large and the slide section was roped off, so it did not bother the rest of the pool area. The beach was not great. Only about 6 loungers, which were always full. The water is very rough and no lifeguards. What they don't tell you is that there is another side you can go with a very nice pool and much better beach. Go to the valet desk and ask for the shuttle to the golf course. This was pretty empty and we had it almost to ourselves. The downside to that is there was no open bar near the pool. If you go into the sushi restaurant they have a limited bar, but they did not speak English. I figured it out though!

They still rocked it out gorgeously without a seconds notice! Omar and I love this place and he's been coming here for like 20 years. This is the fantastic place. It's wonderful. You'll love it. It's quaint. It's in the middle of everything right in the middle of the square there's food there's drinks there's casinos. There's everything within walking distance, it is so wonderful and I hope that it just keeps growing and growing and more businesses go in there if you wanna place to have a business go to Ponce the people are wonderful. TV was not working so they move us to the 4th floor were the fridge was not working. You have to get naked outside in the room with no privacy in order to get inside the shower, very uncomfortable. Breakfast was good and they were friendly. At all the establishments, the waiters does not serve you at the same time. My plate was first and 10 minutes later the other person that was with me that order at the same time receive the food. Hard Rock inside has a promotion of a frier free of gluten and the waiter when we ask him said that they don't. Later on we discover that he was just lazy enough to not even ask another employee regarding this.

The first night I heard what I assumed was a curated "rainforest soundtrack" through speakers. It's not. Those are actual local frogs, and that small detail somehow sets the tone for the whole experience: it feels real, private, and almost unreal at the same time. The room is massive and thoughtfully designed. The outdoor shower is a standout, and the big tub makes it feel like you have your own spa built in. I didn't have a private pool since I'm on the second floor, but the view is so beautiful I stopped caring pretty quickly. What impressed me most was how effortless everything felt. Having an Embajador team plus a driver/golf cart makes the resort feel easy to navigate, and they're quick to respond when you need anything. The downside - it does NOT look like what is advertizied. The cushions on all the seats and lounge chairs are old and stained and were soaking wet so could barely use them, the pool was dirty and had to request it to be cleaned, the trash was overflowing when we arrived, the ice maker was not working, the in room massage was expensive for what we got, there is no safe passage to the beach, the outdoor furniture is not well maintained, no umbrellas, furniture old and outdated. I would not return unless they did a massive update.
