Probably important for me to mention that I am American where for us the day spas I patronize you pay for a day pass to the spa versus your paid entry here only including 2 hours. For myself and my partner personally two hours is just not enough time to relax, to stay on schedule with the ability to experience all floors and rooms I had to continue exploring every 10-15 minutes which left no time to relax. Soon as I would get comfortable and start snoozing it was time to move on to the next room or level. I am not quite sure the reason for the two hour time limit but would love to know. Also, as you migrate between the floors with the one towel and bath robe they give you constantly taking off and putting back on at some point thy become drenched and no longer serve the purpose of keeping you warm in-between floors and dry. Also, they accept reservations; however everything was extremely small here from the multi bodies in the pools to the point you could not find a spot along the wall to the crammed bodies within the treatment rooms; this facility needs to be badly renovated to accommodate the reservations they are receiving or they need to decrease the number of reservations allotted within a given time frame. Lastly, for each pool there is only one massage water pressure device so there are literally lines to access it. For a pool I am used to having ample (8-10) per pool. Will i return; not if I can locate a more cozy and accommodating day spa. Sorry one more thing they make you lock up your phones here and the showers, and locker rooms are co-ed. So you are literally showering with a bathing suit on; I could not wait to get back to my partners sisters place to take a proper shower.

There's plenty of saunas and steam rooms to try, and two large heated pools. Only complaint is the noise. They have no noise policy, and it was not relaxing as it could have been. A friend of mine was a member there and so suggested I come and try it out for the day. Of course we bypassed the gym and went straight for the equally taxing pool/steam room/jacuzzi. The pool area is an oasis of calm in the middle of a very busy city. The walls are tranquil blue and it's has the feeling of being pure indulgence. The water is treated with a combination of UV and chlorine which means you don't get that OTT feeling of dry horrible skin that you get in other pools that just use chlorine. People watching is great here, for some reason the most beautiful men in Cardiff chose to swim at this establishment. Great if you're a bit of a perve like me but it's advisable to keep your wits about you to avoid drowning.

In this area of the city centre there are at least three good gyms all competing for membership:…read morethis, the Laguna Health & Spa at the Park Plaza Hotel; Vitality, around the corner, which is based upstairs above Henry's Bar on Park Place and doesn't have a pool; and the Hilton's small LivingWell gym, which can get busy during peak times. This cluster of gyms in close proximity has created plenty of competition between them to attract membership, so there are usually some promotions on at each of them to try to lure you in. The Laguna is good for those into swimming, and its pool is filtered using UV rather than just chlorine (unlike the Hilton's LivingWell pool), which makes for a less chemical swimming experience. They have a relaxing jacuzzi and a steam room next to the pool, and the changing rooms are very smartly done out. Here you definitely get the feeling you can indulge rather than just exercise hard, and it's a relaxing space to spend some time after work or at the weekend. If you want a real treat, the spa also has a range of beauty and relaxation treatments, most of them fairly expensive (as is the case with most spas). They also have a proper gym, of course, and about 35 exercise classes a week (unlike the Hilton LivingWell, which has no space to hold group classes). The gym has cardio vascular stations including treadmills, rowers, cross-trainers, steppers and walking machines, plus fixed resistance stations, a free weight area, a warm up and stretching area, a Power-Plate® Machine, and screens showing sport, news and music while you work out.

The Beauty Within Medi Spa, situated neatly on the high street of a lovely little village called Cowbridge, offers a range of beauty treatments, as well the latest in aesthetic laser therapy, skin rejuvenation and hair removal techniques. I've been the joyous recipient of an Exotic Steam Rasul experience, where you spend 45 minutes in a darkened Arabic temple applying different coloured medicinal chakra muds to specific areas of the body. The idea is to gently inhale the steam infused by pure herbs, which, according to the spa's website, apparently helps cleanse your respiratory system, smooth the skin and detoxify the body, while revitalising your chi energy. Not bad for a Saturday afternoon. The best part is the warm shower that pours down from the ceiling, rinsing your skin, and making you feel like kids caught out in the rain after an afternoon of making mud pies. The Exotic Steam Rasul is a creative gift for the difficult-to-buy-for couple - trust me, it's way better than a John Lewis voucher! The Beauty Within website offers a full price list, and once in a while they even have a 10% off treatments voucher which you can print out and bring along. There's no train station in Cowbridge, unfortunately (the closest is Llantwit Major and it's not really in walking distance), but you can take a bus out here, although your best bet is probably just to drive.

Once you've had a really deep Thai massage, with all the Yoga-like stretching and manipulation that's also involved in this technique, most other types of massage may seem a bit too lightweight in comparison. If you're not used to the Thai technique, however, they will moderate it to suit your personal preference so you can enjoy a gentler version if you find it too brutal! It costs £40 for an hour, which I don't think is too bad considering how great you feel after being kneaded and stretched for all that time, and the amount of effort the masseur has to put in. They also do head, hand, back and shoulder and aromatherapy massages - but it's definitely the traditional Thai ones I'll be going back there for!
