In the summer this place is rammed tightly with day-trippers, language students and everyone else just wanting an Ice cream, and wanting it at that moment. However coming by in the middle of a vertical rain sodden winters evening, business is not exactly booming (well there was no one their) and suddenly the expensive prices are magnified, without the summer rays affecting your decision making process. A pretty tasteless hot dog for £2.70 is not very good really is it? and don't even get me started on Candy Floss for £2.90. If though you've got a spare pound and you get an urge for a stick of rock, you can buy it right here, without even needing to cross the road. Job done.

Its a family run business and the the owners are friendly and always happy to chat. It's a great place to sit and read the papers with a coffee or hot chocolate and watch the world go by. They have a good selection of home made cakes, fresh food, and they are fully licensed if you fancy a slightly stronger tipple. Wednesdays is student night, Thursdays is over 30's night and they have a number of events planned for the up and coming future, including wine tasting, a psychic night and speed dating. She fussed over all of her customers. It struck me watching the staff just how different this place is to Starbucks. Much more friendly and no extra charge for a glass of iced water (see my review of rip off Starbucks Portsmouth). Costa also sells Coke Zero which the other lot don't - ice cold coke is great when the temperature is steaming. We were delighted that the place had effective air conditioning as it was 34c - hotter than Barcelona. Costa now advertises that it has linked up with Marks & Spencer for food so it's a touch of real class in their sandwiches, wraps and sausage rolls. They had free WiFi, the seating was comfortable and their toilet facilities were clean with paper towels provided to dry hands. Go Costa.

The people that grind the beans and man the coffee machine seem more interested in the art of coffee making than the folks at Costa Coffee but I've still never had a cup I've enjoyed. Maybe it's my personal taste but I've yet to meet anyone else that rates their coffee either! With regular lattes and americanas priced around £1.80 upwards, I'd rather make myself a good cup of Union Coffee or Monmouth at home than be disappointed again.

The wifi signal is amazing! I've never had any troubles with it at all, which is a rare find. Yes, this is a chain, but it actually does things very well. The food is tasty and the coffee is delicious (to my standards). The space itself is also really great and it never gets seriously busy like other cafes in the centre of town. I've been back here many times since and have left as satisfied as the first time. It was fairly quiet, I always get the impression from when I've walked past before that most of the customers work at Amex as it's literally across the road from their office. I asked for a coffee to have in and was given a take away cup which was annoying as I'm a glass snob and if I'm sitting in then I would like a 'sit in' mug please the same as everyone else that was seated. It took me ages to get served at the till point whilst the lady had a long chat across the counter with a customer that was sat down at a table. How nice. After a little loud huff I got served and to be fair the lady was super friendly from then on, complimenting me on my jacket and haircut etc. Yes, flattery usually gets you everywhere but sadly will only get you 2 stars this time. 1 star for the friendly service (eventually) although could have been much quicker! and 2 because...erm...you are a 5 minute walk from my house!? The interior is nice: airy, clean, nice exposed wood and stuff. The coffee wasn't very hot, which was a shame, but it had reasonably good flavour. (I am spoilt by the Red Roaster and Coffee @ 33 so have reasonably high expectations from a independent coffee shop in Brighton). It wasn't amazing, but it was definitely OK. The cool thing is that Frankie's Grinder is clearly related to the Frankie's sandwich place next door, so there's a selection of very nice freshly made sandwiches that you can grab with your latte. We were using the coffeeshop as an informal meeting stop, and I think we might have overstayed our welcome a little bit, having been there for over an hour, but it was hardly busting at the seams so hey ho. That said, the stools and bar that runs around the edge were comfortable enough for the time we were there, but this isn't a loungey big comfortable chairs space - I think it has been designed to be more of a quick chat or grab 'n' go joint for the massed AmEx people just up the road. I love love love Frankie's sandwiches from their packed, bustling shop next door, so I hope this works out for them. On my first visit, I think it will but not without a bit of time and experience to bump up the quality.
