Concise Review A…read moregreat ride from the St. Thomas Airport to our hotel... our driver waited for our delayed flight to arrive 45 min late, and was a welcoming tour guide during the drive to our hotel. Thanks! ----- Driving vs. Taxi... St. Thomas is part of the US Virgin Islands... and yet they drive American cars on the opposite / "British" side of the road. This means that everyone drives US cars, with driver's side on the left (from inside the car), and they drive on the left side of the road... the drivers seats are to the outside of the outside of the lane (vs. inside State-side). Since many the roads are "twisty curvy hilly," (my term) you can't drive too quickly; max ~ 35-40 mph. So the American cars on the British side of the road may be less "threatening" than driving a British car in Britain. ALSO TO CONSIDER... We stayed on St. Thomas for 10 days, and did not have a rental; we got around via taxis/vans, which was great. Now that we know, we're glad we did not rent a vehicle.... ... because... ... We did talk with several people who did rent vehicles. All the stories noted long waits to get the vehicles, which were mostly smaller vehicles; there are some Dodge Caravans, but relatively few. To a couple, the couples we talked to, wished they hadn't rented, as they wished they had just ride in taxis / vans. So if you also choose to take taxis when visiting St. Thomas, you'll likely want to pick one for your arrival, and we recommend Dohm's. ----- We visited St. Thomas, USVI, for the first time in 2021, and had a great time. We intentionally did not plan too many activities before arriving, to make this a more relaxing trip. As our departure date drew closer, however, we did schedule a couple items, one of which was a ride from the airport to our hotel... and we reserved with Dohm's. Dohm's website shows both the boats they have, for water tours around St. Thomas, and the vans they provide for land taxis. I was initially intrigued by a possible water ride from the airport to our hotel (which has its own dock), but Dohm's confirmed that there are no water taxi departures from the St. Thomas Airport. You can only get between the airport and the rest of St. Thomas island via land/car/van. With seven of us traveling, we new we'd want a van and Dohm's has several. Dohm's provided us with a nice, tall van, with plenty of room for the seven of us and our bags. Our flight was delayed by almost an hour leaving Atlanta, and our driver was patiently still waiting for us when we arrived. He provided a good tour of places to visit on our drive to the hotel. ----- Thank you, Dohm's Water Taxi! ----- ----- -----

Duh.) Our trek took place from Red Hook to Cruz Bay aboard a clean, dry and covered pontoon that protected from the elements, while preserving the view. Captain and his mate loaded up the luggage and gave us a bit of history about the surrounding islands (accuracy: 65%) along the trip. Quick, comfortable and easy, friendly crew and no dramas. Boom!

April 2026 CASH…read moreONLY! Or Online Reservation pre-purchase. This review is purely for the actual dock, not the ferry providers. No one here is helpful. No one. Not one person. Front gate: $5/vehicle for port entry. Lady working the booth extremely rude and dismissive. Dock: Security guard lady was beyond rude and obnoxious. Obvious many of the people taking the ferry to St. John were 1st timers. I've read all the reviews on the ferry dock and the common theme from ST to ST J is that the security guards are the worse. Well...I lived it and it's true. The security guards are the worse employees ever. Did I mention rude and obnoxious? There's no signs or directions on where to park and where to wait....so you're at the whim of the security guard telling you where to go. Hint: do not purchase an online reservation. Bring cash to the ferry and pay round trip for the first boat that arrives. This way, you can hop on the earliest ferry. Just make sure you get back on the same ferry provider on the way back to ST T. Otherwise, you will have to pay full price for the return trip. When you get on the ferry, I person will come by and collect payment or check your car reservation. They will give you either a yellow or pink copy of the receipt. Do not lose this. Leave it in the glove box for the return home. You just show this or you will pay again. There are 2 providers. 1. Red Barge 2. Love City (black and white with VIC as part of the boat name). Make sure you return on the same company. Cruz Bay Ferry workers were awesome. It's the Red Hook crew that sucked.

The Quickest and Most Cost Effective Route from St. Thomas to St. John's…read more - - - - - - - - June, 2025 Visit Short Summary: This is the least expensive way to St. John's; we paid $12 apiece in June (possibly a little more at other time of the year); the ferry ride is the same duration as the Westin's Ferry, but you will need another 15-30 minutes from debarking to checking in, depending on the taxi... 3.5 miles, 20-minute ride. The ferry team gets your bags on and off the ferry (recommendation to be ready with tip money). Great views from the open-air top-deck and from the air conditioned indoor lower level. Great ride from STT to STJ. - - - Additional information My wonderful wife planned a relaxing trip for us to St. John's, US Virgin Islands (just east of Puerto Rico), in June, 2025; we had a great time... such a beautiful island! Our flights routed through Atlanta to St. Thomas; there are no flights to St. John, only the ferry from St. John (or St. Croix). Two Ferries from Red Hook... We stayed at the Westin St. John, and they do have a dedicated ferry; for part of the year it departs from Charlotte-Amalie and goes to the on-site dock at the Westin. For the other parts of the year, it departs Red Hook, immediately next door to this ferry. This ferry is from Red Hook on St. Thomas to Cruz Bay (Westin is on Grand Cruz Bay, on peninsula to the south), arriving right in "downtown" St. John / aka Love City. When you arrive there should be multiple taxis to get you to your final destination. The St. John taxis, at least the ones we saw, are all trucks, with the driver in the front, in the cab, and passengers sitting, open air, in the back... the trucks have extended-size truck beds, with benches and a roof over our heads. We visited in June; our tickets were $12 apiece; less than $25 round trip apiece. You need to get your bags to the dock; there is a ramp from the waiting area to the ferry; the team will get your bags on board - do be ready to tip them for their thankful services. The islands are about 3.5 miles apart... the ferry takes 20 minutes or so from dock-to-dock. You can ride on the top, open-air, and inside, with A/C. Thanks you, St. John Ferry! ----- ----- -----

The issue we faced was getting from St. John (USVI) to the marina on Tortola (BVI)... while there are ferrys running everywhere through the VIs, there are no direct ferry's from S. John to Tortola... go figure. The only viable option (we thought) was taking a ferry back to St. Thomas, and then catching another ferry from there to Tortola... a 1/2 day wasted, and we still needed to get through customs/immigration on Tortola, then a cab to the marina. Enter Seahorse Water Taxi! I'll say up front it's pricey... but, a boat picked us up at a dock on St. John, took us to the customs/immigration office in Soper's Hole on Tortola, then directly to the marina, where we were dropped off on the dock next to our charter boat. We didn't even get out of the boat at Soper's Hole, the captain took our passports and was in and out in 5 minutes. What could have taken 6-7 hours (with ferry transfers, etc.) took 1-1/2 hours instead. We were able to spend an extra 1/2 day on St. John! Seahorse Water Taxi was the perfect solution! They coordinate land-based transfers as well. Looking back, great price for such an excellent service! Highly recommend Seahorse!

We never had to get off the boat. We never had to wait at any point between our land taxi and the water taxi. It was a premium experience. In addition, the airline misplaced one of our parties bag. Once the airline had located the bag and it was on its way to St. Thomas, Seahorse arraigned to get the bag to us when it arrived the next day. Amy the general manager does a fantastic job. We are here customers for our future trips to the BVI.
