St. John is in my opinion a much more exciting island to visit than St. Thomas. They have better beaches, food and hospitality. Having a car on St. John is key to exploring the island to the extent you want to. This ferry will help you to get to an amazing day vacation out there. For $50 (roundtrip) and a $3 ($4 for SUV/Trucks) port authority fee (cash only), as well as about 20-25 minute travel time it's totally worth the $$$ and trip. Check out the barge schedule here http://www.vinow.com/travel/virgin-islands-ferry-schedules/ Get there early at least a half an hour to 45 minutes before departing in St. Thomas and an hour to hour and a half before departing in St. John. There is only one car barge operating right now so if you don't make it onto the last barge departing St. John, you're screwed. You'll also have to back your car up a ramp so if you have one of those low rider cars you're also screwed. The boat, is well, a grungy, dirty looking boat for transporting cars but they have an upper deck that passengers can use if the don't want to spend the trip in their car. I hope they get that second barge working soon, it would make trips to St. John a lot easier! read more
